And Now for Something
Completely Different...
Sir Keith O’Nions steps
down as Rector!
We knew all along that his was only a temporary role as rector, but
we didn’t expect his departure to happen this soon! Word just in
confirms that Sir Keith has indeed stepped down, and it would
seem that the most likely person to take his place is in fact Grandmaster Flash! The Hip-Hop legend spoke as soon as the news
broke to our reporter in the field, Dudley Hesseltrump. After repeatedly asked whether he could confirm the rumours that he
would be taking the position, Grandmaster simply stated: “Don’t
push me cos I’m close to the edge, I’m trying not to lose my
head.” Dudley decided not to press the matter so we’re afraid we
can’t provide you with any more information at the moment.
More on this story as
it develops.

Film:
Jackass 3D
The boys are back in town, even more inappropriate than before,
and this time in stunning 3D! I can safely say that you haven’t experienced the full power of cinema until you have seen a close-up,
super-slowmo, explosive poo in three dimensions. Wow. The audience in the cinema all recoiled in disgust at this point, but at the
same time couldn’t fight back the hysterical laughter that came
with the scene.
The humour in this film is of the crudest form, but that is what
you go to watch this film for, and recognising this will keep you
laughing for the entire film. I would even go so far as to say that
this is a much better use of a 3D camera than Avatar, simply because it is really interesting to see someone get their tooth pulled
out by a Lamborghini in 3D, I never knew what it truly was like
before!
Don’t be put off by the price, you really get what you pay for, this
film will have you smiling for a long time after and your sides will
hurt from laughing. Just remember not to try any of the stunts you

Just take a look at these smooth
Fila f13s (left), you too could be
wearing these if you are just willing to take the plunge into the
metaphorical high-top pool. Do it.
You will never look back, this I
promise.
At the bottom of the previous page is an example of some awesome Nike Air-Force-One customisation. Being able to design
your own trainers has kept these fresh for a long time.
Inspired by the epic Star Wars saga, Adidas even went so far as to
create a range of AT-AT high tops in the same style of the monstrous imperial walkers (see below), they also released other Star
Wars wear, but these are definitely the coolest.

Wagwan wid dem freshmans ting?
If you, like me, are asking yourself this question, then perhaps it is
time you broadened your horizons and check out some new kicks
for Christmas. High-tops have been cool since the 80’s, but nowadays when I look around me I see very few people rocking this
look. Whatever happened to the Fresh Prince being the biggest
man in town?
Bredrens, I propose a revival of this movement,.I want to see the
majority of Civ Eng busting these sneakers around the airport
lounge. Not only are they exceptionally cool and good looking, but
they can also be worn with a huge variety of looks, from shorts
with ankle socks to straight-legged or skinny jeans. And then of
course you could wear them with a shell suit like a hip-hop legend.
High-tops should be an indispensable part of
your wardrobe, big shoes to match a
big attitude (and big other things).

The El Salvador Project:
Welcome to the jungle
This academic year I will be gathering a group of 10 - 13 students
from the Imperial Civil Engineering Department to work for The
El-Salvador Project. The project is a student lead expedition run
annually with the primary purpose of development work for poverty stricken communities in El-Salvador.
The trip is OPEN
TO ALL YEARS (Including postgraduate students)
This year the project will be based on seismic resistant housing
working with the project’s partner NGO in El-Salvador.

The actual in-country project lasts for six weeks during the summer holiday, starting around the end of June/ beginning of July
and lasting up until mid August. However the planning, fundraising, and post-project work represent over a year’s worth of effort
by the students involved.
For more information about the El-Salvador project, please visit:

There will be a presentation about the project on:
Tuesday the 23rd November from
1pm – 2pm in Room 208
Getting around, El-Sal style!
For those who are interested in participating this year, any questions you have can be answered then.

Music:
Madlib is a hiphop producer, you’ve probably come across some
of his production as he’s had several successful collaborations with
artists. He decided to start his rapping career through an alias
named MF DOOM (metal face doom) where he would always
wear a metal mask when he rapped. By now you’re probably thinking I’d rather not infect my ears with some goon wearing a mask
yelling into them…. But please read on. Critics labelled his voice
too low pitched and boring, so he decided to make another alias
(Quasimoto) where he would simply up the pitch and tempo on
his voice! Sounds like a joke and it seemed as if he intended it to
be considering he decided to only wear a bright yellow bear suit
when performing under the Quasimoto alias. However his production skills came into play and the sound is surprisingly good. The
latest album out is called “The Unseen”, the beats are low tempo
and Quasimoto comes out with a great flow occasionally using his
own voice to add a nice contrast. The main flaw in the album is
that some of the tracks are more experimental than necessary but
that adds a comedic effect.
Definitely worth a listen!

City and Guilds brought guns and glamour to the long awaited
grudge match against the Royal School of Mines. Arguably the
biggest challenge facing Captain Ed Labinski was enticing 17 players to the arse end of nowhere that is Harlington. The C&G team
consisted of 8 Civil Engineers, all fresh from England’s rout of
Australia the previous day. The game kicked off with C&G quickly
exerting their dominance and running in two tries within 10 minutes. The 2nd a kick and chase caught by a marginally ONside Tom
Beswetherick. By half time the engineers were comfortably in the
lead with scrum half Tom Evan’s sublime distribution and James
Allen’s courageous rucking keeping the (marmite) miners subdued.
Ed Labinski’s rousing team talk and impact subs Giles Mann and
Elliot Taylor ensured the glamour rugby continued despite the IC
football 6th team’s keeper apparent reluctance to catch the ball.
Niall Watson’s outrageous ball-carrying skills and nifty side-steps
further terrorised RSM before tries by Tom Gannon and Tom
Beswetherick sealed a 38- 24 win.

Sport:
If you would like to come to the presentation, please send me an
e-mail at [email protected] to register your interest. (Please note
you can still come to the talk even if you haven’t sent an e-mail,
this is just so I can estimate numbers!)
If you are unable to make the presentation, you can also email me
at [email protected] and I will be glad to talk to you about it
some other time and answer your questions.
The trip is a lot of fun and the experience of a life time, so if
you’re not too busy drilling for oil or working for a large corporation this summer, why not do something really good instead!
I will be looking to recruit members for the team in the next few
weeks.
