“Each of us has the
ability to put our
unique human potential
into action and to
acquire a desired result.
But the one thing that
determines the level of
our potential, that
produces the intensity
of our activity, and that
predicts the quality of
the result we receive is
our attitude.”

A Word from our Director
By Teresa De Leon
As we approach the end of the year,
we might reflect on the things we have
done and the those we haven’t done.
What were your new year’s resolutions
for 2012, and of those resolutions which have you
been able to accomplish? This might be a good
time to make a list of those things in your life that
are most important, those things that you value and
are dear to your heart: health, family, friends,
success? Do you have your priorities where they
belong? Do you tell and show your loved ones how
much you care for them? Do you make a real effort
to be a better person every day, for you, for the
ones you love, for humanity? Are you aware of the
impact that your words and actions make? Do you
smile enough?

All of us at NPTI wish you and your
family a Merry Christmas and a
prosperous and healthy New Year!
You all make a difference every day!
This Year
New Professions Technical Institute has had an exciting year: we
graduated our first group from the Accounting Technology and
Hospitality and Tourism programs, were granted a five year
accreditation from our accrediting body (ACCET), researched,
developed and sent the package for the Pharmacy Technician
program to de Department of education for approval. In addition,
we conducted several continuing education training workshops
for our faculty and staff in order to ensure that our team provides
the best education possible in seven months. Also, we started
giving the Phlebotomy and CPR certification for our graduates in
the medical field and participated in the Blood Drive campaigns.
We presented over thirty different events in our auditorium
ranging from poetry reading, to dancing, to information on
immigration and income tax preparation. We displayed different
exhibits in our lobby providing a space for the arts to our
community. Most importantly, over 400 students graduated from
our programs at NPTI.
We have also had the pleasure of incorporating 9 new members
between staff and faculty to our team giving us the possibility to
grow as a school and as a family and provide better service to our

Celebrating our Culture
by Elisa Todd
This has been a wonderful year for our gallery. We have seen an immense
display of talent in the form of Painting, Sculpture, Photography and Crafts.
We have also offered all kinds of presentations in our auditorium from poetry,
to theater, to meditation.
Hundreds of friends of the arts have come to join us at NPTI to admire the talent and vision of
the different artists that have shared their work with us.
Our Gallery has seen a tremendous increase in popularity during 2012 as we continue to
provide a space for the arts in our community. We are grateful to our loyal friends for their
support, year after year, and to all those who have made a contribution to our commitment to
be a part of the cultural scene in this great and diverse city.

Teachers’ Appreciation
December 2012
Being a school privileged by a group of wonderful
professors is more than we can ask for. That is why
the staff decided to thank them, and recognize their

The pleasure of helping others
by Elizabeth Gadea
The Career Services Department guides our
graduates through the arduous process of getting
jobs, which, nowadays, are hard to find. Working in
partnership with several employers of diverse
businesses has allowed NPTI’s graduates to make
this a reality. Our greatest satisfaction is to help
them transform their lives for the better.
Below are some of the companies that have
contributed with our department to make this
transformation possible.

Francisco Montes de Oca graduated in January,
2012 as a Business Office Specialist. He was hired
by a company who hired another graduated last year.
He began in February 2012 in the Documentation
Department. After working for less than a year, he
has been sent to Bangkok, Thailand to represent the
company.
His exact words were: “I went to Bangkok for meetings and to represent my firm as a company that
can handle any and all shipments to and from the
USA and Canada and to meet different companies
with the same attributes as my company so we can
work all over the world.”
We celebrate his success!
Congratulations Francisco!

December 2012
I started in NPTI with the idea of becoming a medical assistant. I had a great experience at NPTI i had great teachers who taught me a lot , which am grateful for .
Elizabeth, the Job Placement Director who with her team members Dora, Fatima, and May were great in helping me find a good
job. I was blessed to find a great job in my field at Doral Eye
Center starting salary $11 per hour, full time, and benefits. I
would definitely recommend the school to anyone, they offer a
great service to their students.

"Communication: A Bridge of Words"
By: Maydoll Morales
"Communication is everything and everything is
communication"
-Terry DonaldsonFrom the origins of his own existence, man has felt the
need to first understand the world around him, and
later on to express that perception as well as his
feelings, beliefs and emotions.
We travel to the mysterious prehistory where man
drew on cave walls simple children like symbols and
signs which, although rudimentary form, send a
message of a culture in a full training and
development. Then came the onomatopoeic sounds,
product of the biological evolution of the human body
followed by the development of language. When we
say “later”, we are talking about thousands of years
because the prehistory was the longest stage of human
existence and it has shaped not only the language but
also the individual and group consciousness. Since
then, man has realized that communication is not only
part of their innate ability, but also of his
self-preservation.
What happens when we are up against an English
environment?
It is because of the great importance of
communication for us that it is so frustrating when we
are faced with a reality in English. Our inherent need
to express ourselves is drowned in mandatory silence.
For us Latin Americans learning English as a second
language is an important goal that sometimes seems to
be ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. But more than
learning a new language, we are speaking of an
essential tool for our personal and professional
development.
Studying is a complex task made up by a set of
habits and practices through which we regularly
assimilate knowledge and learn techniques to
apply them in practical work and in life in general.
But it is not an impossible task; nothing is impossible when our desires are great. Just keep in mind
that there are two major aspects in the study:
Obtaining knowledge and applying it to reality
which results in a variety of experiences such as
solving problems and/or meeting our human needs
Many of us go out of the classroom and forget the
books in the back seat or in a corner of the house
until the next day. We see Spanish-language TV,
listen to music in Spanish, and continue to think in
Spanish. It's hard to beat the habit of so many
years, but we must open our minds and absorb the
new language. We are surrounded by music,
movies, adds, and people who speak English.
What we learn in school is everywhere so we can
take advantage and practice.
Learning is not only what we do in an organized
and systematic way, but is also something inherent
to our human nature since it allows us to grow and
develop within a give culture.
What should we reflect upon?
Nature gave us language which binds us as a
species. Thanks to language humans have been
able to hand down experiences and traditions to
generations to come.
It is of outmost important to accept the new
language as a form of interactive expression and a
way to face new challenges, adapt to a new
environment, and develop our intellect.
All or most of us came to this country in search of
dreams; those dreams are the most important tool
to change and transform reality and learning
English is the instrument that will help us make
those dreams come true.
December 2012
Page 13
We are in a phase of experimentation and testing, in an
interesting time open to the imagination, where we can
see the new language as an instrument for enriching
the traditional elements of our human relationships.
We must not give in to defeat, age, income, and the
fact that we are not longer accustomed to study. These
aspects of our daily lives are no justifications to accept
defeat, since man is bigger than that. We are far better
at learning and transforming our lives than we
sometimes think.
Is studying a difficult task?
