It was therefore one of the most feared battlefields of the whole Western Front. More than 50 nationalities were involved in the four year long Ypres trench war. ! ! ! ! ! The last witness ! One hundred years after the great Armageddon, the war landscape is the last witness of the conflict. The In Flanders Fields Museum therefore gives special attention to the landscape of the Ypres Salient. From now on, visitors will see the wide panorama from the Belfry tower too. After the historical information in the Museum, and the visual stimulus on the tower, the visitors are invited to visit the front curve itself. The Ypres Salient today 1 Visitors’ Centre, 3 entry points with various walking routes, 2 cycling routes, 1 car route. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! A film based on historic material (films, aerial photos, documents and witnesses) in each of the three entry point introduces the historic facts starting from the temporary landscape. From there the visitors are invited to discover different eye-catchers by foot, cycle,… ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Entry point South ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Where? Central in the provincial domain De Palingbeek ! WWI It leads the visitors to the atmosphere of the main war sites of The Buff, the Molenbos and further on to the Caterpillar and Hill 60. ! ! ! ! ! ! Themes The formation and development of the Southern Salient Subterranean war: numerous relics of the mine war fought there from 1915 to 1917 between Bellewaerde and Sint-Elooi, in the sites of Sint-Elooi, The Buff, The Caterpillar, Hill 60, Sanctuary Wood, Hooge and Bellewaerde. ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! !! ! ! ! ! ! Themes The formation of the front and the events in the Centre of the Salient The castle parks of the Ypres Salient: before the war, the outskirts of Ypres were dotted with dozens of summer villas, small and big castles, often surrounded by magnificent parks. Almost all were destroyed in the war. The traces still visible today are explained with interactive multitouch displays about the castle parks, before the war, during the devastation and today. ! !! ! ! Where? WWI The farm Klein Zwaanhof is located approximately in the centre of the northern part of the front curve. It is the rebuilt version of the Groot Zwaanhof (which was located 200 m further west). From 22 April 1915 this was the centre of the Zwaanhof sector, one of the fiercest battlefields in the Second Battle of Ypres. Themes The formation and development of the Northern Salient The poets of the Salient: portraits of the writers who were here (e.g. Ernst Junger (D), Francis Ledwidge (IRE), Edmund Blunden (GB), John Mc Crae (CAN)...) with a few short biographical details. We hear the endless stream of their words read in various languages. Finally, after 100 years, they are permanently present.
