Introduction
Advantech’s Digital Video Solution Division has successfully applied its industrial design expertise
to an in-vehicle police computing and surveillance system. Advantech used its vehicle computing
know-how to deliver a full solution based on its compact and rugged open digital video
computing platform, sunlight readable LCD and control module, mobile UPS, cameras, and SDK.
The end-customer is a police department that has equipped patrol cars with an x86 open digital
video computing platform to help collect fines and resolve allegations made against officers. This
open platform has enabled police application software to be easily integrated with digital video
functions. Events such as unholstering a gun and notes typed by the officer are recorded with
digital video and then uploaded to a server at the end of the officer’s shift. These videos can then
be seen instantly by searching for the associated event or note.
Vehicle mounted computers must endure unstable power, tolerate dust and vibration, fit into
confined spaces, and withstand a wide range of temperatures, while being fast enough to
process multiple events and video inputs simultaneously. They also need excellent integration with the vehicle, and user
interfaces that are made for mobile use—qualities that industrial-grade open platforms deliver.
Solution
Our customer needed an open, compact, rock-solid, and fully integrated in-vehicle police computing and surveillance system.
Intel x86 mobile processors provide ample computing performance for existing customer applications, and dedicated codecs
provide MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video support. These devices have low thermal emissions to enable operation in a small, sealed
metal chassis that easily dissipates excess heat. A specially designed mobile UPS provides stable power. All components,
including the cameras, LCD, and control module are built to resist shock, and the whole system has an ergonomic mechanical
design. Dedicated and experienced engineers and project managers produced this integrated thermal, electrical, and mechanical
design for excellent system stability backed by Advantech global service and long-term support.

important. Public transportation surveillance not only helps to prevent terrorism, but is also a
very useful tool to record evidence from accidents or arguments, and to monitor the driver’s
behavior.

Video surveillance on moving vehicles has encountered various problems. Due to the vibration,
limited space, and dust on vehicles, traditional DVR cannot provide the right solutions. Also,
the ability to integrate and expand various functions within an open video system is important.
The limited functions of traditional DVRs cannot meet these challenges in such an
application. Furthermore, the integration between in-vehicle and back-end IT systems is also
a must for increasing operational efficiency. The general IPC encounters problems of size and
lack of resistance to power spikes, vibration, and dust. Also, we need an X86 based system
that can be integrated with back-end IT systems and other software applications.

The DVS-350 embedded/mobile digital video system was chosen as the perfect solution for the video computing center on
buses and trains. With four Conexant 878A chips to support 16 camera inputs and a special design for mobile environments,
the complete system was easily implemented. Besides, the X86 platform made it an easy job to implement other applications
such as e-maps, GPS tracking systems, or digital tachographs. The DVS-350 is compact, with a maximum mounting height of
only 69 mm. It can resist shock of up to 40G, and vibration of up to 1G.

Introduction
The security of public transportation systems is getting more and more attention. City buses,
railways, subways and other city transit systems are getting intelligent platforms for applications
like security or in-vehicle device control.
The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in Taiwan transports almost 1 million people every day, and
more and more security issues are becoming known. The Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC)
has installed a CCTV system for each station, but the MRT cars are still a blind spot for safety
issues. To improve service and increase public safety, the company used Advantech’s DVS-350
integrated video and computing platform for in-car monitoring, surveillance and integration
functions.
Solution
TRTC needed a solid system to fit into limited space while enduring the dust, shock, and vibration of harsh environments. The
Pentium M based DVS-350 was installed in car to enable the driver to perform real-time monitoring and control operations via
WLAN. The integrated WLAN of the DVS-350 was essential because cables were not allowed between each carriage. WLAN also
enabled the maintenance engineers to easily check each DVS-350 without physically connecting cables to each DVS-350. The
compact, fanless and shock-resistant design of the DVS-350 made it a reliable video computing device for this in-vehicle
application. Intelligent software functions combined with built-in DIO automatically detects potential threats, or objects on the
tracks to enhance emergency management and response. These intelligent functions also improve operational efficiency and
performance.
The x86 architecture of the DVS-350 makes it an open multi-function platform in vehicle environments. For example, the serial
ports can be connected to the station displays or announcement systems. The PCMCIA interface enables a CDMA card to be
used for real-time communication applications. Furthermore, the DVS-350 could be an ideal digital signage platform for public
information, entertainment or advertisements.

There is a price war in the standalone DVR market. PC based video surveillance solutions are
developing some unique features that standalone architectures cannot provide. Intelligent video
analysis, object tracking and integration ability are the major advantages of PC based
architectures.
A software company that specializes in intelligent video surveillance wanted to make a hardware
“object tracking” solution based on their software.
For this application:
The traditional motherboard and video capture card solution wastes space and is difficult to
be integrated within one embedded box
The performance of standard Pentium based platforms is not high enough for video analysis
and object tracking.
PCI bandwidth is not power enough to support four channels of video capture at D1 resolution.
Standard motherboards are not rugged enough, and they have no roadmap for fully compatible replacements.
The software company needed a new platform to follow IVS and IP video surveillance trends. They needed an X86 platform
that combined intelligent video and standard video streaming functions.
Solution
The Mini-ITX form factor of the Advantech DVMB-554 motherboard with integrated PCIe video capture provides a small
footprint. The Intel Core Duo processor delivers low thermal emissions while providing high performance to enable
low-profile cooling solutions to be used while running processor-intensive video analysis and object tracking applications.
PCIe delivers enough bandwidth for four channels of integrated video capture at D1 resolution. A complete SDK with
demonstration programs helped the software company port its software to this new platform.

Over the past 20 years, CCTV has been widely used in banks for surveillance systems. Digital Video
Recorder (DVR) System performance has grown along with the fast growth of IT technology and
PC performance. Many banks plan to change their surveillance from analog CCTV systems to DVR
systems because they enable video to be stored in a high quality format, with smaller data size for
easy inspection and analysis. The user doesn’t need a big room for a DVR surveillance system.
The digitized recordings can be sent and checked via the Internet from anywhere in the world.
More than this; the EWF and HORM technology built in to the XP Embedded OS provides a more

PVS-640H series is a industrial grade H.264 DVR system that includes PowerView (Surveillance Application Software).
PowerView has the Backup Center (Remote Backup Management System), Power Center (Central Monitoring System) and client
DVR management software. PowerView supports H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10) and resolutions up to full D1. When an event comes
up, PowerView can inform users via e-mail, SMS or voice. Digital I/O and RS-232 ports on the high performance PVS-640 can be
used to connect card readers, fire & security systems, access control systems or other similar systems. Moreover, PowerView can
link to object tracking systems that enable cameras to track targets. With a complete and high-quality database of face images,

Each bus has a DVS-350Z installed with integrated card bus FCCnet 3G module. The DVS-350Z drives two displays: one large
VGA panel for digital signage, and a 7” LCD for the driver’s GIS and dispatch functions. USB or CF based GPS is optional. An
integrated WLAN is used to download video and audio signage content when the bus is in the station. The WCDMA module

Introduction
Advantech has developed sophisticated IT knowledge and accumulated know-how from dozensof
projects. Advantech has followed the growing use of surveillance software. Most access control
systems in the market are still analog recording systems that are not integrated with a DVR (Digital
Video Recording system). The traditional access control system can’t provide effective data storage
and data search functions because VHS systems need many tapes for recording and the video
quality is not stable. The integration ability and flexibility of surveillance applications has become
an important issue in the surveillance market.
Access control systems based on the PowerView add value for the customer, and provide the
customer a valuable solution to enhance security in offices and communities. PowerView 6000
surveillance software provides functions such as playback, remote control, and alarm notification.
The integration between PowerView 6000 and the access control system results in a more useful
system. Each person entering or leaving is recorded in the system as an event when the door is
opened. If someone tries to break into thebuilding, the security guard receives an alarm triggered
by preset sensors. Information about the person entering is printed on the main screen along with the entry time, gate number
and entry/exit history. The default alarm notification function enables security guards to react to any emergency or accident. For
example, the PowerView system delivers an alarm notification when the connection between system and controllers is
dysfunctional, or when the camera signal lost.
PowerView VIS is a flexible and powerful software platform that has the ability to integrate other functions such as access control.
PowerView 6000 Access Control is an integrated DVR and access control system that provides the customer an economical choice
and good video quality. A PC-based DVR can replace a numerous VHS tapes and enable users to browse live video from any
camera at anytime.
Solution
The PVS-640 series is an industrial grade DVR system integrated with PowerView surveillance application software. The PVS-640
DVR system can use H.264 hardware compression capture cards to provide stable video quality and full D1 display resolutions
without consuming too many system resources. PowerView software also has a CMS (Central Monitoring System) and Backup
Server.
A Local DVR with PowerView 6000 Access Control software notifies users via Email, SMS, or voice when an event is triggered.
The powerful motion detection function also enhances building safety and compensates for a shortage of human observers. The
system administrator can set up the motion detection function on the screen. The split screen frame flashes red to inform the
administrator to pay attention to a particular camera. CMS can control 16 DVRs and 512 cameras simultaneously. Its dual VGA
output function has one screen displaying 64 live videos and another screen showing eMap which enables users to watch
real-time camera feeds by double clicking the camera icon on the eMap.

Prisons need high security and highly reliable surveillance systems. The traditional VHS
surveillance system usually has video quality problems because the analog signal is directly
sent to the monitor without processing. A DVR system uses a codec to process video images
and provide good quality, 4 CIF (704 x 480) resolution video to security guards. Additionally,
high quality speed dome cameras enable prison correctional officers to monitor any situation
easily.
Correctional officers can monitor the aisles or cells of buildings. The surveillance software
application can also integrate with access control systems to strictly implement a high level of
security. The bookmark function helps officers highlight any specific event that could cause
damage to the jail. The correctional officers can recall and watch previous video or retrieve
video data on suspects. The smart search and playback functions play important roles in such
environments. The motion detection function and additional digital I/O devices are able to
prevent prisoners from escaping. For example, the beeper sounds when the motion detector is
triggered by an escape attempt. The frame of the camera feed window becomes red, the surveillance system logs the event
and video is pre-recorded for 10 seconds before and post-recorded for 300 seconds after the event.
The CMS system supports dual video outputs. One screen displays the main DVR/Camera window, and another displays
eMap. When an event is triggered, the corresponding eMap camera icon flashes red. The correctional officer can
double-click the icon to watch real-time video and inform other officers to respond to the emergency.
Solution

(Backup Server) comprise a standard surveillance solution. The PVS-640 series DVR with PV-2100 hardware compression
capture cards is a stable IPC-based DVR that has high quality (H.264 format) recording and playback abilities. PowerView
software plays another important role in the solution. Scheduled recording, motion detection, event logging, etc., satisfy
most customer needs; more than this, CMS and Backup Server enable whole-situation-control and efficient data storage
management. All video data is transported via the Internet. The remote control function enables administrators to reboot the
client DVR if the system is dysfunctional.

Introduction
The DVP-7421BE is a high-end video capture board with a hardware codec engine. It supports 4-channel live preview, video/audio compression and
playback at D1 resolution and 120/100 fps. Up to four DVP-7421BE boards can be installed in one PC for concurrent live viewing, compression and
playback of up to 16 channels at D1 resolution and 480 fps. The programmer can use the comprehensive SDK to load protection code or system parameters into the on-board 128 byte EEPROM. The SDK comes with sample code for reference. The hardware codec engine makes the DVP-7421BE
the ideal platform for applications like network video servers, video conferencing, and high-end digital video recorders.

DVMB-554 is the first digital video main board to be built with the Intel Core 2 Duo platform, PCIe technology and four channel video input driven
by the onboard video capture chip. Intel Duo core technology offers great performance for video analysis or video compression. The new PCIe
interface for four Video chips relieves the usual limitations on PCI bandwidth. The practical result is that the DVMB-554 can capture four channels of
video data (D1) at full motion frame rates. The small MINI-ITX form factor and its low power CPU combine to establish the DVMB-554 as the ideal

The DVS-350Z is an industrial grade PC-based vehicle computer. It is designed for installation in mission-critical environments with its fanless, antivibration, anti-shock design. A wide power range of 9 to 30V DC and optional vehicle power management module can protect the system from
power surges while used on vehicles. The cardbus, Mini PCI and IDE CF make the DVS-350Z the ideal platform to integrate with communication

Introduction
PVS-650 series is the advanced Hot-Swap digital video surveillance system designed to meet the requirements of modern security markets.
PVS-650 series come with high-end H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10) hardware compression capture cards and can provide up to 4CIF recording
resolution at 30/25 fps (NTSC/PAL). The system supports Raid 5 data storage format and can use 8/12/14 mobile rack hot-swappable hard disk

Introduction
PVS-950 series is a remote backup and data management solution with storage flexibility and high expansion capability. The system is used
when the local DVR does not have enough space for long term video data storage or when the user has remote backup requirements.
Depending on the bandwidth, up to 16 DVRs can be connected to this backup system via public or private networks. Backup schedules can
be configured to limit bandwidth use. Built-in Web server design, strong data archive functions and multiple back-end storage device support
make the PVS-950 an excellent solution for the integrity of video surveillance data storage. The system supports Raid 5 data storage format
