at this placement.
Rocklane’s Betty emerged as the consensus winner of the 48th NGSPA National Futurity which

Sandcreek Travlin Bob, bred by Bill Anderson of

Breckenridge, Colorado, and handled by Tim Hidalgo of Hardesty, Oklahoma, annexed the second placement in this futurity. This dog, which
placed second in the NGSPA Quail Derby Classic
at Ardmore, Oklahoma, also ran a strong forward
all-age race. While not showing quite the reach
or drive of Rocklane’s Betty, it was still an impressive performance which bodes well for the
future of this young dog. John Vince and Bill
Anderson were both present for the running.

The NGSPA National Futurity started on the afternoon of March 1st in unseasonably warm
weather which continued to grow hotter reaching
a temperature of 85º, a state record. Since Arkansas had suffered through a year long drought
with rainfall falling short by 20 inches, the
grounds were extremely dry with little water present. It was a tough day on horses and dogs.
There was a light rain sprinkle on the night of
March 1st bringing the temperatures into the low
40’s that night. March 2nd and 3rd were cooler
with temperatures reaching the high 60’s each
day under sunny skies with little cloud cover.

Stubblefield of Paragould, Arkansas, and Wayne
Troutman of Strongsville, Ohio. Bill Stubblefield,
who field trials all-age pointers, is a well known
and respected judge who has judged major
pointer stakes throughout the south and on the
prairies. He has also given his time to judge
several major Shorthair and Brittany stakes as
well as NBHA trials. Wayne Troutman is a respected Shorthair enthusiast who has not only
judged past NGSPA Championships but also
championships in several other breeds. He has
successfully campaigned Shorthairs who have
annexed numerous NGSPA championship titles.
These individuals rode hard, carefully watched
and evaluated the performances, and rendered
well received decisions. They are to be commended for their efforts on behalf of this breed
futurity.
Purina is the official sponsor of the NGSPA National Futurity and, in addition to financial support, provided caps and product for the winning
dogs. Roy Pelton, one of the Purina representatives, was present at the trial. Roy has many
friends within the Shorthair breed and it was
good to have him with us. Jim Moorehouse, who
represents Tri-Tronics well, was also present and
rode some of the trial. Keith and Bobbi Richardson, who own and operate Sierra Trading Post, a
major national catalog company with retail outlets in Nevada and Wyoming, were present with
their string of Shorthairs.
Keith and Bobbi
brought a large supply of NGSPA embroidered
coats, shirts, and caps which were sold with the
proceeds going to the NGSPA. Keith, who serves
on the NGSPA Board of Trustees, was helpful to
all in attendance. Bobbi Richardson, not to be
outdone, worked with Jean Armbrust, and Jo
Rowekamp on hospitality at the trial.
Hank Lewis, owner of Hi N’s Dodge This the winner of the 47th NGSPA National Futurity, was the
sponsor of a social hour which preceded the well
attended NGSPA National Futurity banquet.
The report of this trial is based on observation of
the running, discussion with the judges, and input from George Culpepper and Tom Oswald.
George’s and Tom’s assistance in the running of
this futurity is deeply appreciated.
The Running
Uodibar’s Blue Gold (Rabidou) and Direct’s Timberland Jodee (Steger) both went away in good
fashion. Blue Gold was consistently forward and
ran a strong consistent race from start to finish
with Rabidou able to show the dog on several
nice casts. Jodee ran hard, became overheated,
and was picked up.
Rugerheim Smokin Morgan (Chandler) and Prairie Wind’s Queen of Jazz (Hongo) started strong.
Jazz was not entirely consistent in her application, had a nonproductive, and then a nice find
with the dog showing good manners at the flush.
These two dogs suffered from the heat and both
finished hot and tired.
Shake the Bank’s Encore (Hongo) went it alone
since her bracemate, MSR’s Mr. Ed was not on
the line. The heat took its toll on Encore who
was picked up prior to the end of the brace.
Hickory Acre’s Button Hook (Goegan) and Prairie
Wind Primo Infinity (Hongo) made some nice
moves early, shortened, and both handlers
elected to throw in the towel.
Prairie Wind Take A Shot (Hongo) and Royalruns
All Bets Are Off (King) started off with Bets making a big opening cast from which he did not return for 8 minutes. Take A Shot ran a consistent
and above average race but had only a nonproductive to show for his efforts. All Bets Are Off
also had a nonproductive and finished his heat
taking some easy footing.
Trapper Cactus Rambler (Steger) and General
Tug Lee (King) ran on the last brace of the afternoon. The temperature had cooled some and it
was late in the afternoon resulting in some established coveys coming out to feed. These two
dogs left the line and General Tug Lee took a
covey on the breakaway with Rambler joining in
the fun. These two dogs continued on with Tug
Lee being more consistent in his application to
the course. King rode hard into some large fields
trying for a find only to have Tug Lee take out
another large spread out covey. King elected to
pick up his dog. Rambler continued on but finished without further game contact.
2006 48TH NGSPA NATIONAL FUTURITY
Foxgloves Fire and Ice (Pierce) was a snappy
animated little dog who ran a nice race. Her effort was impressive, but she failed to connect
with game. Royalrun Added Excitement (King)
started strong on a big cast, was gone for a period of time, shortened, and was picked up.
Tru Blu’s Chasing Shadows (Mason) and Arrieta
(Dohse) were both picked up when they failed to
meet the expectations of their handlers.
Sap’s Hurricane Charley (Armbrust) and Spekk’s
Cechh Me If You Can (Rowekamp) went away
with Charley hunting the course and Spekk
showing some heels. Spekk was always to the
front, making some big moves, but was lost at
22. Charley had one fine and finished his brace
hunting to the front.
O’Riley Boy (Henry) was braced with Sandcreek
Travlin Bob (Hidalgo) whose race has been detailed. O’Riley Boy also impressed with a strong
forward but birdless race. Henry was able to
show this dog favorably on several occasions and
the dog put down an honest effort.
Prairie Wind’s Rainbow Ridge Cora (Hongo) was
braced with Rocklane’s Betty, the futurity winner. Cora had a fair race where some lateral
moves to the side hurt her overall performance.
Dixieland’s Smoking Dancer (Jurergens) and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo (Hidalgo) both ran forward but
restricted races with Boo being the stronger of
the two dogs. These dogs finished without game
contacts.
Sunrise Wandering Ronin (Hongo) with Hi-Tailyn
Trooper Saddle (Dohse) started out with Ronin
making some large early casts but without consistency in his range. Saddle hunted the course
without contact. Ronin had at least two bird
contacts both of which he failed to handle. This
dog was on a big cast at the end of his brace and
handler had to ride hard to get control of his
charge.
Hi-N’s Shock’N Y’all (Goegan) and Ike’s Eshod
Delight (Dohse) started out with Y’all showing
some early heels and running a fairly impressive
shooting dog race. This dog had a point of
feathers with handler being unable to produce
birds in the area. Ike hunted the course at restricted range. Y’all still showed some jump at
the end of the brace.
JD’s General Rudder (Oswald) and Prairie Wind’s
King of Blues (Hongo) were both picked up when
their handlers did not feel these dogs efforts
were as strong of the dogs which had already
run.
Cruzandots Carl (Wilber) and Timberland Savannah Chip (Kidd). Cruzandots Carl was picked up
early. Chip hunted his way around the course,
had a find, but cut his own throat by wanting to
return to the area of the find taking some hard
riding to get him out of the area. Chip finished
in good fashion.
TJust Rock’n Knockn’ Billy (Hidalgo) and Sizzling
Matilda (Chandler) went away with Bill Root,
owner of Matilda, riding. Billy was picked up
early.
Matilda impressed as she was fast,
snappy, and forward.
This dog drove hard
throughout the heat and was considered a very
serious and strong contender for a placement.
Mighty Slick Doc Holliday (Paddock) and Rugerheim Smokin Liberty went away with Doc
Holliday showing some heels and Liberty being
more restricted in range. Unfortunately, Johnathon Paddock could not maintain contact with
Doc Hollliday, who was lost.
Liberty hunted
throughout the heat at a restricted range.
TruBlue Jedi Master (Biggs) with Dixieland Cowboy Up (Juergens) were a contrast with Jedi
Master running a nice shooting dog race while
Cowboy put down a gun dog effort. Jedi Master
had one find and finished in good fashion. Cowboy was forward, quite biddable, and was still
hunting at the end of the brace.
Preacher’s Seventh Son (Oswald) and SM Pockets of Gold (Gulledge) were both picked up when
their handlers did not feel they were making any
money.
Tru Blu’s N All That Jazz (Mason) went it alone.
This dog started out strong but unfortunately a
rider in the gallery was thrown. A runaway
horse took this dog off course and the scout had
to ride hard and long to return Jazz to the front.
2006 48TH NGSPA NATIONAL FUTURITY
Jazz then went away on a powerful cast and
made some big and impressive moves in some
big fields. This dog, showing some great potential, finally returned as a tired dog at the end of
the brace.
BDK’s Break the Bank (Hongo) and Wildfire’s Eye
Candy (King) were both in season. The race of
Wildfire’s Eye Candy, who finished third in this
futurity, has been detailed. Break The Bank ran
a consistent forward shooting dog race throughout the brace.
Stoney Hill’s Trixie (King) and Uodibar’s Gucci
(Richter) were also in season. Trixie went away
strong and was gone for several minutes on the
breakaway. When she was returned, she settled
into a forward shooting dog race. Gucci was
consistent, forward, and biddable with a shooting
dog effort.

NGSPA 2006 Quail Championship
2006 NGSPA Quail Championship
by Andy Gerdes
After a couple of years on the road the annual running
of the NGSPA Quail Championship was back at the
field trial grounds at Lake Murray, Ardmore, Oklahoma, ran January 26 through February 1, 2006. The
event was blessed with mild weather, great friends,
superb competition and excellent judges. There cannot
be enough said for the grounds and the facilities that
are provided by the state of Oklahoma and the
grounds maintained with the help of the Oklahoma
Field Trial Association.
We want to start this writing by thanking all those that
came and helped to make this year’s Quail better than
ever. Thanks to Ronnie Sales for stepping up and taking on the management of the Quail, Gene Mason for
taking on the leadership role and Will Barbee for his
time and energy to help get everything done that
needed to be done. We can never leave out the
“Cook”, thanks to David Vogelsang for coming and
help making all of the food preparation for the Amateur weekend including the Purina sponsored Amateur
night get-together. Despite the rain and mud the first
part of the weekend, it was a comfortable setting and
all had an enjoyable time.
The Quail Association wants to give a special thanks to
our sponsors; Purina for all the support that they give
to the individual events, to the NGSPA and all sporting
dogs. Purina has generously provided products for the
winner as well as sponsoring our Amateur night gettogether. We also appreciate BassPro for their contribution of Judges gifts for each stake at this event.
great social gathering.
Jerry and Rob made the long trip from Wisconsin to
run in the Quail and they both helped run things and
stepped in to assist by relieving Tom Milam and Grant
Stanfill with judging the Derby Classic.
2006 NGSPA All Age Championship
The start of the All Age was Thursday morning, which
was the warmest and driest day of the competition.
While the field for this stake was small with only seven
dogs, it was powerful group, which included the reining AKC All Age National Champion and the All Age
National Runner-up. The dry, warm conditions made
bird finding a premium as well as putting an extra burden on endurance. James Messer and Tom Hudson
from Houston teamed up to examine this group of big
running dogs.
When the dust had settled and the evening cool had
set in, the judges’ decision was clear. Only one dog
met the standard and that was Trublu’s Hud’s Kick Up
Dust, (Hud) handled by Robbi Gullege and owned by
Rodger Barton. Hud’s run set the standard for bird
finding that no others could match and the dogs that
did find the elusive birds were plagued with lack of
range suitable to satisfy the judges’ expectations.
Congratulations to Robbi, Rodger and Hud for this grueling win.
We appreciate all the people who traveled so far to
make this a memorable event. Thanks to Keith and
Robbi Gullege for persevering their travel problems
and coming so far, Mark Wasserman for making the
trek from Kansas, Pat Warsek for taking the time to
come from Nebraska, Tim Hidalgo from Oklahoma,
Chris Gregon from Ohio, Randy and Nancy Coffelt, and
Brian Long who came in from Missouri.
James Messer came up from Houston to help with the
judging, as did Tom Hudson. Gene Mosley, who also
came up from Houston, is a welcome personality and
is always a contribution to any competition. Along
with Gene, Kirt and Terry Bomer also made it up from
Houston to add a little class to the event.
And a very special thanks to Jerry Paddock and his old
friend Rob Creany (now our new friend) both of which
helped to make the Quail a special dog event and a

given and two beautiful brass trophies to the winner
and runner up. Except for the mud for the dog
wagon, it was a great championship.
by Jerry Paddock
At the conclusion of the All Age stake on Thursday
afternoon, it was noted that the area was really dry
and in dire need of rain. On Friday night during the
wee hours of the morning, several thunderstorms
rolled through the area and gave a lot of rain. The
entire southern Oklahoma and North Texas area had
been really dry and the national news gave the accounts of all the grass fires that had occurred.
The rain made the conditions for the Amateur Championship much better. Except for the near impossible
task of getting the dog wagon down the muddy roads,
the moisture was very welcome.
Judging the amateur was the very capable pair of Mr.
Tom Milam and Mr. Grant Stanfill, both from the great
state of Texas. Eleven braces or 22 dogs were entered and it turned out to be a very good shooting dog
stake. James Messer with Annie’s Little Stinker is always a contender and ran early on the first morning.
Both dogs in Chloe’s brace had already had a covey
find and they were seen ahead near one of the fingers
of Lake Murray. Chloe was stopped and pointing while
her brace mate ran through a covey and did not get
stopped quickly enough and was picked up. Chloe
was very good and handled the situation well and was
sent on. Another very nice covey find, a total of
three, and she completed the hour in great fashion.
Now everyone had something to shoot at.
Vogelsang’s, Toby Von Blitzkrieg, handled by James
Messer and owned by James and Mr. David Vogelsang,
ran early Sunday, which turned out to be a beautiful
bright crisp morning. After the breakaway and a short
absence, Toby was found by the handler and seen
standing out on a limb with a great wild covey find.
All was good and on they went. Again, after a brief
absence, Toby was found on a second wild covey find
and everyone felt that Messer had something going. A
third and final covey find near where Chloe had her
third find and the hour was completed with great
power and style. He was just a little more powerful
than Chloe and now there were two good dogs in the
book.
The rest of the Saturday was completed and braces on
Sunday were run as well. A number of very nice performances were turned in but nothing matching what
Chloe had done on Saturday and Toby had done on
Sunday. Toby was the champion and Chloe was the
runner up. A new Christie Enterprises saddle was

2006 NGSPA Quail Championship –
Open Shooting Dog
by Jerry Paddock
The entry for the Open Shooting dog stake was pretty
nice as well. There were 26 dogs and 14 braces, as
we had a bitch in season. Mr. Tom Milam and Mr.
Grant Stanfill were again the judges for the shooting
dog stake.
Each day the mud on the back roads got better and
easier to get the dog wagon to where it needed to be
made the task at hand much better. On the first day
Annie’s little Stinker, owned and handled by James
Messer, ran early in the stake. Her bird work was super however James did not like her as well in the
Amateur Shooting dog stake. She was just not as
“kindly” as she normally is but did a great job. As
much winning as she has accomplished, she sets the
standard more than she doesn’t. She was named the
runner up in the championship.
The first day’s running of three braces in the morning
and three braces in the afternoon pretty much followed what everyone wanted to do, it looked like it
might take more than two days to complete the championship. On the second morning things kind of took
care of themselves as five braces were ran before
lunch so it was evident we would be able to get the
NGSPA 2006 Quail Championship
work done in two days. The dogs just took care of the
situation and relocated themselves to the dog wagon.
Richard’s Heidi ran the last brace of the stake as a
declared bitch in season. She did a good job with the
course. Handled by Keith Gullege of Blue Dawn Kennels, she navigated the course very well with one find
to the front. She made a very nice move around the
“airport” area of the course and was very nice on her
game. Congratulations to the owner and the Gullege’s
for a nice job. At the awards ceremony the judges
mentioned an “atta boy” to Dunfur’s Hoosier LB for a

and was at 12:00 o’clock. As we covered the last bit
of ground, the dog was out of sight at time and the
handler was told we need to “see the dog”, another 30
seconds and the dog was seen standing to flush in a
far tree line.
Second Place—Sandcreek Traveling Bob was handled
by Tim Hildago and was in the first brace of the morning. Strong all age race forward and he was seen
hunting to the front a number of times during the 30
minutes. Great potential for this young dog that just
went forward and needed little, if any, scouting. He
was really rolling and only the great “find” separated
him from his brace mate.
Third Place— Trublu’s Jedi Master, Yoda was handled
by Blake Biggs and was a pleasure to watch. He was
forward with a strong approach to the objectives and
was never out of pocket. He handled well and did not
require any scouting and was always to the front,
hunting and going with his handler. Blake did a real
nice job with his dog and the dog rewarded him with a
great performance.
All of the dogs and handlers were good and it was a
lot of fun getting the opportunity to watch them.

Derby Classic
By Jerry Paddock
The Derby started at 8:00 AM on Wednesday morning
and all sixteen dogs were in the truck and dog trailer
ready to run the Derby Stake continuously over the
Ardmore grounds. Rob Creaney and Jerry Paddock
were asked to judge the derby as Grant Stanfill and
Tom Milan had been riding for 5 days watching the
shooting dogs.
This was a great derby with at least seven of the sixteen dogs showing great potential for the future.
Those dogs of note that were not placed were Hoss,
handled by Ronnie Sales, Pockets, handled by Keith
Gullege, Chip, handled by Don Kidd and Benny, who
was handled by Grant Stanfill. All of these dogs were
very good and had minor spots that separated them
from the three that were placed.

Duval Ranch
Freer, TX
February 13, 2006 to conclusion
The start of the Amateur was cool and crisp to what
would be a hot dry day that would test dog, horse,
and rider. The grounds at the Duvall County Ranch
are wild and tough, a place to show off a good sturdy
dog and there were plenty of them. Twelve strong
hardy dogs made it to line that day and it is unfortunate that only two will be remembered out side of this
writing. Judging the event was Eldon Hongo, down
from Wyoming and Tom Hudson in from Houston, both

birds and finished her brace with power and style.
The third brace matched Duchess Cassidy’s Sundance
Kid, (Dance) and Annies Little Stinker, (Chloe)owned
by James Messer and handled by David Vogelsang.
Chloe started with a medium forward run that expanded greatly as she move through the rugged terrain producing 2 stylish finds but hampered with 2 non
productives along the way. She finished strong, with
stylish flair as she always does even after covering
more ground than most other braces. Dance made a
big move along the brush line to the north early showing to front moments later. He made several bold
moves throughout the race searching intently finally
being satisfied at about 50 minutes with a nice find in
the brushy mott. Both Chloe and Dance finished well
beyond the normal course demonstrating plenty of range and run but
not having enough solid bird work.

REGION SEVEN
OPEN SHOOTING DOG CHAMPIONSHIP
Brace one:
A. Lehmschlog’s Mega Ditto
Handler: Eldon Hongo
Ditto had three nicely spaced fines with a good
run.
B. Mike
Handler: G.F. Henry
Mike had a non-productive at 17 but recovered
with a find a nice relocation at 32. He finished
strong.
Brace two:
A. Oaks’ Opal Von Grewie
Handler: Steve Pasas
Opal set the standard early. She laid down
the most consistent, to the front race of this
Championship. Her application was superb
with minimum handling. She looked good from
break-a-way to finish. She added two stylish
finds.
B. WVK Max
Handler: G.F. Henry
Max went missing for 10, had a find at 30 but
had a tendency to want to create birds.
Brace three:
A. WVK Jazz
Handler: G.F. Henry
Jazz had three finds but his application was
not consistent.
B. Uodibars’ Lady Bird
Handler: John Rabidou
This was the bird finder of the Championship.
Bird finished strong with five stylish finds under trying circumstances.
Brace four:
A. O’ Rowdy Boy
Handler: G.F. Henry
Rowdy went birdless.
B. Cibolo Creeks Cummings ( Trucker)
Handler: Bonniesue Castillo
Trucker was not up to his usual rambunctious
self. he had two finds, however, on other
occasions birds were seen departing the area
Trucker had been inspecting.
Brace Five:
A. Sparetimes’ Kandoit
Handler: Stanfill
Kandy had a very nice finish, as good as any
in this Championship. She had two finds.
With a little “jump start” things could have
been difeerent.
B. Annies’ little Stinker “Chloe”
Handler: James Messer
What is there to say about this fine animal
that has not already been said. This has got
to be one of the all time most consistent
Championship caliber dogs to warrant an entry
fee. She is always to the front at the limits of
shooting dog range. A superb bird finder with
excellent style of which she had three today.
Brace six:
A. Matts’ Prairie Chucker
Handler: G.F. Henry
Chucks application was a little short today. He
finished with one find.
B. Ace’s Sin City Redemption (Demi)
Handler; Eldon Hongo
Demi did not make the first turn. She could
not be scouted due to a fence separating her
from us.
Brace seven:
A. Prairie Winds’ just a Flirt
Handler: Hongo
At this point in the game, knowing what was
already in the books, Eldon was not going to
unnecessarily over stress his dogs. If he felt
they were not contenders he picked them up.
Flirt was in this category.
B. Vogelslangs’ Toby Von Blitz
Handler; James Messer
At 5 , Toby wander off from a stop-to-flush.
Handler elected to pick him up.
Brace eight:
A. Slick Dixies’ Tarkus
Handler: EldonHongo
Same as 7A above
B. Uodibars’ Chocolate Thunder “Hank”
Handler: John Rabidou
Hank made some nice moves but not enough
on this today. He finished with two finds.

Brace nine:
A. Rockey-By-Blues

REGION 7 ALL AGE CHAMPIONSHIP
By John Rabidou
Willows on the Spot – a 3 year old male owned by
John Lunseth and handled by Eldon Hongo stared his
brace with a big booming break away to the front until
he disappeared from view. Six minutes later as scout
Dave Vogelsang called point, Hongo charged hard to
flush the covey in mesquite and cactus cover. Spot
being high and tight and no let down was credited with
this magnificent limb find.
Spot went on to three more finds with manners intact,
but slowed down some at 57 minutes. This was worthy of runner-up to judges Tom Hudson and Ron
Schaitel.
This was Spot’s first championship placement. Considering the 90 degree plus heat, his future seems
bright indeed.
Strike’s Flash of Gold, owned by Doug Stocks and also
handled by Eldon Hongo started with a big limb find to
the front. Style and manners were intact as Hongo
handled the veteran to two more finds. Flash scouted
by field trial icon, John Rabidou.
Flash went on to win the Region 7 All Age Championship.
All other dogs either went birdless, failed to handle
birds correctly or were gone too long.
The Region 7 NGSPA Championship Series has a long
and storied history. However, recently it has fallen on
hard times with organizational and ground problems.
The 2005 edition was not held, but a small group of
devotees were determined to begin the effort to revive
Region 7 to its rightful place in the Shorthair mainstream. Tom Hudson, Gene and Sherrie Moseley,
James and Sarah Messer, Andy Gerdes, Jim Wortman,
Ron Schaitel and myself among others pulled together
to “make it happen.”
A major boost was the offering of the use of the Duval
County Ranch at Freer, Texas by David and Hayley
Killiam. To them we all owe a large debt of gratitude.
The committee is appreciative of the support of professionals Eldon Hongo and G.F. Henry.
Tom Millam, our scheduled judge, was injured in a
horse accident. Ron Schaitel graciously stepped in at
the last moment to team with Tom Hudson to judge.
The event attracted ten entries, nine of which were
handled by Eldon Hongo.

A NEWCOMER’S GUIDE TO THE NAVHDA NATURAL ABILITY TEST
By Steve Graham
Pacific Northwest Chapter
This brief overview is intended to supplement, not replace, NAVHDA’s Aims, Programs and Test Rules,
which you hopefully have read. Better still, you might
have attended a NAVHDA Handler’s Clinic, which I
consider invaluable.
First of all, WELCOME! We, the chapter members, who
put on NAVHDA tests, go to all that trouble - not for
themselves, but for the breeders, owners and handlers
of versatile hunting dogs whatever the breed.
Most of the time, we enjoy the challenge, the camaraderie and watching the dogs work but most important,
we want the test to be enjoyable and successful for
both you and your dog.
Rare is the chapter that makes money from a test.
Usually, the costs of the test exceed the revenue
(judges’ travel takes a big bite out of the local bank
account) and chapters have to come up with funds
from other sources. NAVHDA sets strict limits on the
number of dogs that may be tested on a given day to
ensure that each dog is carefully evaluated by the
judges. In the relatively simple Natural Ability Test, a
maximum of 10 dogs may be tested on a single day.
When the Utility and Utility Preparatory tests are included, fewer dogs may be tested based upon the mix
of dogs entered.
Every dog runs by itself (except in the biennial Invitational Test) and is evaluated by all three judges who
must then agree on the dog’s score at each step of the
test. If you’ve tested in the AKC system, you might
have received radically different scores from each of
two judges. That can’t happen in NAVHDA.
The judges are very special people. They give freely of
their time to come and judge. They receive no pay
and get only their expenses reimbursed. NAVHDA
testing is not competition. The judges are happiest
when they are able to award good scores to all the
dogs.
cence is not in order if you have a question about the
way the test works, JUST ASK. Not only won’t the
judges bite your head off, but they will be pleased to
help.
Before we get into the test itself, let’s consider a few
more points.
Relax! That’s not always easy, especially when you
feel that you and your dog are on display. Everybody
wants a good score, of course, but the dog is going to
do whatever it’s going to do regardless of how nervous
you might be. The worst case is when the handler’s
nerves are passed on to the dog.
Dogs (as well as their handlers) can have bad days.
When that happens, just make the best of it. Perhaps
you can enter another test close by. Every dog that
passes deserves congratulations.
Many people, when they are not the active handler,
like to walk with the dogs during the search phase.
This is allowed provided the handler and the judges
agree. If you want to walk along with a dog during the
Utility and Utility Preparatory Tests, you MUST wear
blaze orange because live ammunition is used. Safety
ALWAYS is the primary consideration.
The Natural Ability Test consists of:
Search and Pointing
Swimming
Pheasant track
Physical examination
Additionally, the dog will be evaluated on Use of Nose,
Desire to Work and Cooperation, based upon performance in the other phases. Also, two blank shots will be
fired at the beginning of the search to test for any
gun-shyness.
The physical examination is part of the dog’s permanent NAVHDA record and is important if the dog is to
be used for breeding. Besides the physical attributes,
temperament also is noted.
Normally, the judges will ascertain whether the handler is a novice and offer assistance accordingly.
Becoming a NAVHDA judge is not a simple matter.
Judges must first attend seminars and serve apprenticeships (all at their own expense) before they are
approved. Additionally, each test must have a senior
judge who has even more experience.
The portions of the test can be run in any order at the
discretion of the senior judge. Moreover, all the dogs
to be tested on a given day might complete the water
portion first. That might mean that Utility Test dogs
and Natural Ability dogs might all complete the water
portion before any of the dogs move on to the search,
etc.
Remember: They WANT you and your dog to do well.
They probably will offer suggestions from time to time
(which a wise handler will heed), but always, ALWAYS
they are there to answer your questions as well. Reti-
Additionally, the running order published by the test
secretary is just a suggestion to the senior judge who
can and probably will modify the order, particularly if
one or more bitches in season are entered. (They run
A NEWCOMER’S GUIDE TO THE NAVHDA NATURAL ABILITY TEST
last for obvious reasons - be SURE to notify the senior
judge if you have a female in heat).
The important thing to remember is that one should
plan to spend the entire day at the test REGARDLESS
of the published running order. After the test, the
judges hold their final conference and the scores are
announced.
Now for the test. Remember: Relax!
In the Natural Ability search phase, the dog is expected to search diligently for game for at least 20
minutes and point what it finds. The judges will ensure
that the dog is in an area where it can pick up the
scent of a bird.
Wait for a cue from the judges before rushing in to
flush the bird. (hint). The handler does no shooting of
live or blank ammunition in the Natural Ability Test.
Don’t yell “Whoa” or anything else at the dog to make
it point. The judges want to see if the dog will point
and not just stop on command. (This IS a natural ability test, after all). The dog doesn’t have to be absolutely steady, but must be convincing that it actually is
pointing the bird.
In general, the less said, the better. Let the dog do its
stuff.
At the water, the handler throws a retrieving dummy
out far enough for the dog to have plenty of swimming
depth. The dog doesn’t actually have to retrieve the
dummy, but it does have to swim. If the dog won’t
swim for a dummy, a bird is thrown out. The dog can
pass if it retrieves the bird, but the score suffers.
Normally, the physical attributes are checked while the
dog is wet from the swim. (Hopefully wet, that is).
For the pheasant track, the flight feathers are pulled
on a cock pheasant, which is then shooed to run off
into some cover out of sight of the dog. The dog is
expected to track the running bird a reasonable distance. It is not necessary for the dog to catch the bird
and retrieve it (or even extra credit) but it’s always
satisfying for the handler.
Again, the judges will help the beginner. They will ask
whether the handler wants the dog to see the bird before it is released. Some dogs get fired up if they see
the bird first, but others might become overly excited
and want to run and search rather than methodically
following the track.
That’s all there is until it’s time for the judges to read
the scores.
Finally, the judges will be available immediately after
the scores are read to explain the scores given your
dog. Remember: All three judges agreed on the score
you received. Everybody wants to do well, but if you
don’t get a perfect score that means all three judges
agreed that something was lacking.
Ask immediately while the day’s events are still fresh
in the judge’s minds. Otherwise, the judge (who are
just as human as the rest of us) probably won’t remember the details that they wrote on the judge’s
cards that were sent to NAVHDA headquarters.
Good luck.
Many thanks to Phil Swain, a very senior
NAVHDA judge for his contributions to the above

It was a great day with Mother Nature really cooperating! No clouds and temperatures in the
70’s, which for Florida is wonderful. Thanks to
all of our participants and workers. It made for a
wonderful event. We had two dogs finish their
Senior Hunter titles.
