What is the University of Scouting?
The University of Scouting is a fun filled day for parents and leaders in Scouting. It
is an action-packed supplemental training where you choose the sessions that you
wish to take. Sessions are led by experienced volunteers who will help you enhance
your ability to deliver a fun and exciting program to your scouts. Care was taken to make sure that
sessions do not duplicate training found in basic leader training courses. Sessions are focused on
ways to improve Scouting directly in your Pack or Troop.
The University of Scouting is divided into four separate “colleges”.
General Studies College are sessions that relate to all Scouting programs.
Cub Scout College are sessions that focus on the Cub Scout program.
Boy Scout College are session that focus on the Boy Scout program.
College of Commissioner Science: Commissioner Basic Training and Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate programs.
You can choose any session in any college, however if you want to earn a Commissioner’s Degree
you will need to register for either Basic Training, Bachelors, Master’s, or Doctorate program which
takes up all six sessions.

Tuition (Cost)
$20.00 by November 1st $30 after November 1st and $40 walk in registration on November 9th

Location
Columbus State University is Proud to host the University of Scouting at the Elizabeth
Bradley Turner Continuing Education Center in Columbus, GA. Map and directions are
on page 6.
Students
Who should attend? Everyone! Parents and leaders who are involved in Scouting. Sessions have
been designed to cover all levels from the new parent who just joined at school night to the most
experienced Scoutmasters. We guarantee you will walk away with information you can take back to
make your Scouting experience better in your Pack or Troop.
Faculty
Staff for the University of Scouting were selected because of their experience in the subject matter.
Students will learn from those who have a proven track record of success in the subject matter they
are teaching.
School Supplies
Bring a notebook and pencil so you can write down plenty of good ideas to bring back to your Pack or
Troop. Most sessions are indoors in a formal classroom. If you are a Scout leader wear your uniform, if you are a parent or committee member wear your Pack or Troop T-shirt or other Scout shirt.
Registration for Classes
Your can register by filling out the registration form on the last page of this course catalog and submit
it to the Chattahoochee Council via mail or fax with your tuition payment or you can register on-line
at the council web site www.chattahoochee-bsa.org. On-line registration requires payment by credit
card.
Make sure that you choose only one class per session. You may have to make a choice between
two classes you have an interest in if they are only offered once during the same time. If you couldn’t
take all the classes you have an interest in we want you to come again next year to take those classes you were not able to attend this year. Each year we will evaluate each class from student surveys
to decide if the class should be repeated the next year. We also expect that new classes will be suggested and added to the course catalog each year.
Life on campus
In the morning you will have the chance to visit different booths from council volunteer committees
who are here to help support your Pack or Troop along with local attractions that offer Scout friendly
programs. Check in to pick up your course schedule and patch. The morning general session will
begin at 8:45 a.m. in the Founder’s Hall with a general welcome and overview of the day. Then
students will attend the three morning classes they pre-registered for. Lunch will then begin at 12:00
noon in the Founder’s Hall. During lunch we will have our guest speaker Georgia State Senator Josh
McKoon discuss the importance of volunteer and civic involvement. After lunch students will attend
the three afternoon sessions they pre-registered for.

josh mcKoon - Georgia State Senator
Josh McKoon is a native of Columbus, GA. He earned his undergraduate degree from Furman University and recieved his law degree from the University of Alabama. He is a member of the State Bar
of Georgia and the Alabama State Bar. He serves as Senator in the Georgia State Senate for District
29. He is chairman of the Judiciary Committee and serves on the Ethics, Higher Education, Insurance and Labor, Judiciary Non-Civil, and Regluated Inducstries and Utlities Committees.
Senator McKoon has been a long time supporter of Scouting and values the Scout Oath and Scout
Law. He is extremely active in the community including Rotary, United Way of the Chattahoochee
Valley, Urban League of Greater Columbus, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, and is an active parishioner at
St. Annes Church. When he is not at the state captial or volunteering his time he is an attorney with
McKoon & Associates.
We look forward to hearing from Senator McKoon to learn about the importance of volunteering in the
community and spending time developing youth.
General Studies College
General Studies are topics that effect all Scouting programs. Parents and leaders in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing will find the classes in this college helpful. Classes will address
general guidelines, best methods, and procedures.

111 - Chartered Organization Representative Training - This course will train
Chartered Organization Representatives in the important role they play in Scouting.
112 - Unit Finances and Budget Planning - Even the best planned Scout programs
can not work without the proper funding. Learn how to develop checks and balances for your unit finances and have a financial plan.
113 - Internet Advancement - Get hands on training using a computer lab on how
the internet advancement system works. Feel free to bring a current advancement
report and be able to log it on-line during the class.

111 - Chartered Organization Representative Training Continued.
122 - Funding your Scouting Program - Once you have a financial plan in place
how do you generate the money to provide a great program?
123 - Flag Etiquette and Ceremonies - Citizenship is a key part of the aims and
methods to Scouting. Make sure that you know the facts about flag etiquette and
learn ceremonies that you can bring back to the boys in your unit.
Session 3 11:00 a.m.
131 - Unit Rechartering - Hands on training in a computer lab will walk you
through how to re-charter your unit on-line. If you bring your current unit roster
and recharter packet you just might be able to finish your re-charter.
132 - New Membership Policy - The new youth membership policy goes into effect January 1st. Learn the myths from the facts and how to handle this change and
how to communicate it to parents.
133 - Social Media and Scouting - Our Scouts are growing up in a social media
world. Learn how Scouting can use this medium to connect more boys to Scouting
and keep the ones you have involved. Also learn the rules and regulations concerning social media and Scouting.

Learn the same system that is used by corporations to develop their long range
plans.

151 - Funding your Scouting Program - Once you have a financial plan in place
how do you generate the money to provide a great program?
152 - Camp Use and Reservations - There is a lot of changes that have happend
at Camp Pine Mountain and Camp FGL. Learn about these changes and how
these facilities are available to your unit throughout the year.
153 - Bullying - Scouting is designed to be a safe place for both youth and adults.
Prevent bullying in your unit by learning how to identify it, things you can do to
keep it from happening, and what to do if it does happen.
Session 6 - 3:00 p.m.
161 - Unit Rechartering - Hands on training in a computer lab will walk you

162 - How to handle challenging Scouts and Parents - Conflict in units happen.
Learn how to handle conflicts in your unit and most importantly a key item that
will help prevent future conflicts.
163 - Mentoring and Coaching - Learn the essintial skills behind how to properly mentor and coach your Scouts and even other adult leaders.

The Cub Scout College features classes to help make your Cub Scout Pack program the best it
can be. Parents and leaders will learn best methods from those who have experience.

213 - Safe Cub Scouting - Using the Guide to Safe Scouting learn how to provide
a safe and fun Cub Scouting program. Learn what you can do in Scouting and why
you may not be able to do some activities.

221 - Amazing Tiger Den Meetings - Hands on activities, games, and learn about
great Go and See It’s that are fun and easy to do. Learn how to get the most from
your Tiger Parents.
222 - Amazing Wolf and Bear Den Meetings - How to make being a Cub Scout a
great time with hands on demonstrations of challenging crafts and activities perfect
for Wolf and Bear Scouts.
223 - Pack Journey to Excellence Score Card - Is your Pack a Gold, Silver, or
Bronze program? Walk through the different performance standards to understand
why each are important to providing a great Scouting program.

231 - Cub Scout Crafts - Have fund building and letting your creativity flow.Hands
on crafts that are perfect to do with your Scouts.
232 - Amazing Webelos Den Meetings - Learn about great activities you can do
with your Webelos to keep them challenged and excited about Scouting as they
prepare to cross over.
233 - Cub Scout Adult Leader Training - Learn about the different Cub Scout
training opportunities offered throughout the year and what training is required to
conduct different activities.

252 - Webelos to Scout Cross Over - Did you know that over 80% of Boy Scouts
come from Webelos who Cross Over and that only about half our Webelos cross
over into Boy Scouts. Learn the role the Pack plays in preparing Scouts and
parents to cross over.
253 - Cub Scout Camping - Learn about the different type of camping that is
allowed in Cub Scouting. Family Camping, Pack Over nighters, Cub Day Camp,
Resident Camp, and Webelos Over nighters will be discussed.

261 - Building a Pack Committee - Learn how to get parents involved and working towards building a quality program. The most important part of a Pack is the

322 - Running Productive Patrol Leaders Councils - At the heart of every Troop
should be the Patrol Leaders Council. Learn how to make these meetings productive, fun, and something that every boy will want to be a part of.
323 - Boy Scout Youth Leader Training - The focus of this class will to learn how
to put on a INYLT in your Troop and what NYLT and NYLTE works to achieve and
how you can prepare your boys for leadership.

the Boy Scouts of America and how Scouting is working to make more exciting

362 - Coaching Life Scouts to Eagle Scouts - Learn the new advancement guidelines for Life to Eagle and the role that the Eagle Scout Coach plays.
363 - Cooking without Pots and Pans - Clean up is easy when you didn’t use
dishes in the first place. Learn some fun ways to prepare food that your Scouts
will love to do.

411 - Commissioner Basic Training - For all new Unit Commissioners this training will
walk you through how the role of the Unit Commissioner with a focus on unit visits and
the re-charting process.

Associates Degree - To earn your Associates in Scouting Degree
complete six hours of training at the University of Scouting. So if
you attend all day you will earn your Associates Degree.
Associates and Bachelor Degrees
are identified with a pin that can
be attached to the University of
Scouting Patch.
Bachelors Degree - To earn your Bachelors in Scouting Degree
you must first earn your Associate’s Degree and complete onther
six hours of training at the University of Scouting.
Master’s Degree - To earn your Masters in Scouting Degree you
must first earn your Bachelor’s in Scouting and serve as an instructor or serve on staff in another capacity for the University of
Scouting Committee.
Doctoral Degree - To earn your Doctoral Degree you must have
earned your Master’s Degree, serve as an instructor and work with
the President of the University of Scouting towards the completion of a special project.

Yes! This the largest annual training event for the Chattahoochee Council.
The event will be held annually on the Second Saturday of November.

If you would like to serve as an instructor for the University of Scouting please contact the President
of the University of Scouting Mrs. Helmi Leffler at [email protected]. Instructors need to
have a track record of success in the area that they are instructing. Classes are designed to not only
be instructional but also facilitated to allow for input and sharing of ideas among students.

Great! We would love to hear your ideas of classes to include for next year. Remember that classes
should meet three criteria; 1-It does not duplicate something already in Position Specific Training, it
may however take a subject further in detail, 2-It should directly benefit the unit program, 3-Must be
kept to 50 minutes. Ideas for classes will be asked for on the student survey so make sure to complete the student survey.
