We are Cov Cath:
A Message from Alumni Director Richard Dickmann
As much as the structure of Covington Catholic is made up
of thousands of bricks, its spirit is made up of thousands
of individuals. The “Colonel Culture” is a result of 82
graduating classes that have contributed to what makes
Covington Catholic special today.
leave their mark on the three classes under them. We
have all left bits and pieces of what make up the whole
that is Covington Catholic and Covington Catholic has
contributed to what make us who we are today, therefore
WE ARE COV CATH.
Each of our classes has experienced the growing pains of
an ever changing learning environment that continues to
strive for perfection. Through overflowing classrooms in
the 60’s, open campus in the early 70’s, the rough athletic
years of the 80’s, and adapting to a new school building
in the early 2000’s, we have all continued to develop that
“Colonel Culture.”
This coming school year will prove to be a very exciting
one. Academically and athletically, Covington Catholic
will be very strong. We will look back on our history
and celebrate many firsts in Covington Catholic history,
including the 50th anniversary of the school’s first state
champions. The campus will be further developed to the
north by adding two new practice fields. Most importantly
Covington Catholic will begin to strengthen its relationship
with its alumni.
We are leaders in the community; we are leaders in the
business world; we are leaders in our faith; we are great
fathers to our children. WE ARE COV CATH.
The Colonel culture strengthened our character while we
were students at CCH and continues to make us the men
that we are today. Covington Catholic brings together not
only young Christian men but the values that are instilled
in them by their parents.
The fabric of Covington Catholic is not made up of today,
but of the many years that its doors have been open. There
is no “end” when you leave Covington Catholic. As seniors,
we left our mark on the three classes that remained, as
did the seniors before us. Those classes would eventually
Blue out
at the Reds
On Friday May 15, CCH students, staff, families
and alums showed our Colonel spirit at Great American
Ballpark. The “Blue Out at the Reds” followed the Northern
Kentuckian of the Year luncheon where Bob Castellini,
majority owner in the Reds franchise, was honored. 450
people from CCH filled one section of the stadium, all clad
in Colonel blue. Several appearances on the jumbo cam
brought questions from the other attendees like, “Who are
these crazy people wearing blue?”
The success of the event, from the pre-game
tailgate at the Griffin Centre, to the fan support at the game,
mandates an encore. Check this publication and our website
next spring for “Blue Out at the Reds, part II.”
September 3rd is the first home football game as well
as the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Alumni
Center after the game. This event will mark the beginning
of many events that will celebrate the strengthening of our
alumni association. I would like to personally welcome and
invite all alumni back for this event.
I hope to see you on September 3rd. Go Colonels!

A Message From The Principal
Bob Rowe
As our seniors received their diplomas at the conclusion of another academic year,
I had an opportunity to watch them display a sense of fulfillment in having lived
as Covington Catholic Colonels for the past four years. During the entire day of
graduation ceremonies, the young men and their parents shared stories about their
CCH experiences, discussed who they have become and who they hope to be, and
contemplated how their time as Colonels will help them fulfill their future goals. It
is my hope that these graduates will always reflect favorably upon their experiences
and will utilize the gifts they have received at Covington Catholic in order to live humbly, with integrity and
faith, using Christ as their constant role model.
The Class of 2011 once again raised the bar, setting high expectations for those undergraduates who will
follow in their footsteps to maintain Covington Catholic’s tradition of excellence. The 118 graduates
garnered $9.94 million dollars in academic and athletic scholarships and will represent CCH at 30 different
colleges and universities in the fall. They also participated in the school’s first Academic Signing Day where
numerous colleges and universities were represented. In addition, they contributed over 16,581 hours of
service, leaving a positive impression and impact on our communities and making them better places as a
result of their efforts. This class truly exemplified living “with a Spirit that will not Die.”
We appreciate and solicit the continued support of you, our alumni, and request your involvement in
current happenings during the new school year in 2011-12. Covington Catholic is successful because it is a
team effort. Our administration understands that providing the total quality experience inside and outside
of the classroom requires that we work together to achieve these goals. A large component of this success
is contingent on school spirit and pride. These elements are present and can be experienced by simply
walking our halls, spending some time in the cafeteria, or attending a sporting event. School pride is not
only exemplified by our student body, but radiates among our faculty, staff, and administration. I fully
realize this is not something that occurred recently, but a tradition that originated and has been cultivated
by our alumni, a pride that has developed and been nurtured, handed down from class to class for many
decades.
Visit our campus this fall and show your support by proudly wearing blue and white. Take advantage of our
newly renovated Alumni Center slated to open this fall, view our additional practice fields in development,
as well as our new entrance on the north side of our campus. Attend a play, a concert, or a game and
experience, as we do, the positive momentum that exists here on our campus as we continue to strive for
excellence in all aspects of our mission statement - to educate young men spiritually, academically, socially,
and physically.
God’s Blessings,
Bob Rowe

Welcome Scott Ruthsatz
CCH Head Basketball Coach
We are pleased to welcome Scott Ruthsatz as the new
head basketball coach. Scott has a B.S. degree from Heidelberg
College; a B.S.B.A. degree in accounting from The Ohio State
University; and a M.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame.
His experiences
as a basketball
coach include
an assistant
coaching
position at the
college level at
Heidelberg, a
head coaching
tenure at St.
L to R Matt Stevens, Tony Bacigalupo,
Mary Central
Scott Ruthsatz, Matt Otte
Catholic High
School in Sandusky, Ohio, and most recently he was an
assistant coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New
Jersey. At St. Anthony he worked under the guidance of Hall
of Fame Coach Bob Hurley Sr. and this year was instrumental
in St. Anthony’s attaining a 33-0 record and the 2011 High
School National Championship.
Scott hopes to see significant growth and change in
the basketball program in the coming year. All of his assistant
coaches are also new to the program.
• Varsity Assistant- Tony Bacigalupo, former head
basketball coach at Silver Grove
• JV Coach- Matt Otte, former freshman coach at
Louisville St. Xavier
• Freshman Coach- Matt Stevens ’94, coach to several
freshman teams in the area before coming to CCH
• Steve Sorrell ’75, assisting with the team as needed
As many have heard, Coach Ruthsatz was eager to
return to the region, with family in Sandusky. He also serves
as president of “Polar Pure Carbonics” based out of Sandusky.
He reports, “Generally I am out of the day to day operations
but I am still involved with the finances and the overall
supervision of the company.” Upon making the decision to
relocate out of the New Jersey area, he found the job posting
on the OHSAA website; he confirmed information about the
school, its basketball program and the area with a friend, and
found that Covington Catholic could be a good fit for him and
the region a good fit for his family.
Coach Ruthsatz, like all CCH head coaches, will also
be teaching. In the coming year he will have classes of Social
Studies, World Geography and Current Issues. In his previous
position he served as Dean of Students.
Scott and his wife Jessica are parents to six children:
Nick will be a sophomore here at CCH, Aiden, Madelyn, and
Marina will be at St. Pius X, Nolan is 4 years old and Aaron is
1. Jessica is a full time mom. While the kids were sad to leave
friends in New Jersey, everyone was anxious to be closer to
family. The Ruthsatz family will be living in Edgewood and
attending St. Pius X Church.

Good Bye & Thank You
to Coach Lynn Ray
After 36 years, Coach Lynn Ray has
announced his retirement from teaching
at Covington Catholic. Coach Ray taught
science and social studies. He is best
remembered for his prolific football career
which compiled a record of 224-126,
including several years of 10-0. In his
tenure he made 20 trips to the state playoffs and won 5 state championships: 1987,
1988, 1993, 1994 and 1997. Coach Ray was
also a 4-time Cincinnati Enquirer Coach of
the Year and in 1998 was inducted into the
Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
He retired from coaching in 2005.
Coach Ray was a 1969 graduate of EKU
with a bachelor’s in science degree. In 1973
he came to Covington Catholic and in
1975 he was named head football coach at
CCH. For several years he coached without
a field, borrowing from surrounding
schools. Despite these obstacles, Coach
Ray took CCH to the top.
As a teacher, Coach Ray specialized in
freshman physical science for many

years. When the freshman curriculum
transitioned to biology, Coach Ray added a
number of social studies courses including
world geography and current issues. Fond
memories of his teaching career include
his ubiquitous nick name for freshmen
“Freddie Frosh” and threats to non
performers that they would receive a “Big
Fat Zero.” From Jack Kaelin: “Mr. Ray was
more than a coach. He was a professional
teacher who demanded that students gave
their best. He was always there to help any
student that needed help.”
More from Mr. Kaelin: “Lynn is a very
compassionate, kind and gentle person. He
watches out for those that are suffering.
He remembers those that helped him. He
has such a warm heart but he doesn’t let
a lot of people know that. He also loves
chocolate and loves his wife. Covington
Catholic will really miss him.”
In his retired life he plans to continue
coaching the defensive line backers for
Covington Catholic and golfing avidly.
Alumni Spotlight:
Father Bob Dressman S.J.
Fr. Bob and Tony Kreutzjans, SJ ’58
1940 graduate and valedictorian Father
Bob Dressman S.J. writes, “I have
confessed to being in the initial stage of
diminishment but I’m not there yet.” At
the age of 89, Father Dressman celebrates
his 69th year since entering the Society of
Jesus. His life has taken him for theological
study to Germany, for language study to
Japan, and for work to New York City
and Italy. He has served as Professor of
Journalism and Missionary at Sophia
University in Tokyo, in the press office
of the Jesuit Curia in Rome, and toward
the end of his career, as University of
Cincinnati’s Hospital Chaplain and St.
Xavier’s parish priest, both close to home.
At present he serves in “Active
Retirement” at the Colombiere Center in
the Diocese of Detroit. While the center
is primarily an assisted living facility for
retired Jesuits, it also hosts retreats and
conferences. Until 2009 Father Dressman
was engaged in spiritual ministry on a
daily basis, including masses, confessions,
spiritual counseling, and one-on-one
retreats.
Father Dressman reports, “I am
happy and blessed. My primary thrill is
daily mass. I do not travel, but hope you
do. Please visit.” In this twilight of his
life, Father Dressman remembers fondly
his years at Covington Catholic and the
plays he participated in through the drama
In April of this year Mike Listerman
resigned from his position as Head
Basketball Coach and his teaching
position at CCH. During his 11 years as
head coach his teams won six district
titles, and two regional championships.
His 2004 squad advanced to the Final
Four in the State Tournament. His 230
victories place him second in career
wins behind the legendary Dan Tieman.
In addition to the success of his teams,
many of his players continued their
playing careers at the next level.
Coach Listerman was very active
in the Northern Kentucky Basketball
Coaches Association. He was the
recipient of several coaching honors,
including the Region 3 NHSACA Coach
of the Year in 2008, and was one of eight
finalists for the NHSACA National High
School Coach of the Year that same year.
In 2005 he was an Assistant Coach in
the Ohio/Kentucky All-Star game. In
2007 he was an Assistant Coach of the
McDonald’s All-American East Team. In
2009 he was an assistant coach of the Ky.
All-Stars, and last year served as Head
Coach of the Ky. All-Stars.
P rincipal Bob Rowe: “I am
grateful to Mike Listerman for his time,
commitment, dedication, and sacrifices
over the last eleven years. Covington
Catholic has achieved much success
during Coach Listerman’s tenure
and prior to that during the Tieman/
Listerman era.”
Mr. Listerman has accepted
positions as assistant basketball coach
and mathematics teacher at Holmes and
we all wish him the best in this new and
exciting venture.
department. His friend and Jesuit Brother
Tony Kreutzjans SJ (class of 1958) says
he lights up at the mention of Covington
Catholic and actually has kept photos from
his days in school. Brother Kreutzjans is
pleased to share life with Father Dressman,
as he resides at Colombiere as well, while
he recovers from brain cancer. He tells
us that Bob hopes to get back in touch
with any of his fellow alums. If you’d like

Giving Back
We are pleased to announce the
creation of the school’s newest
endowed scholarship in the name of
the Stanley and Ellen Meihaus. The
Meihaus Family scholarship, like the
other endowed scholarships that came
before it, was established specifically
for financial aid; only the interest will
be used for tuition expenses and the
principle will never be touched. Bob Meihaus (’68) created the
scholarship in memory of his parents.
Mr. & Mrs. Meihaus were firm
believers in Catholic education. All
Left to right: Principal Bob Rowe,
Bob Meihaus, Carol Rasp
seven of their children attended and
graduated from Catholic elementary
and high schools, and are graduates
of Catholic colleges/ universities,
representing well over 100 years of
Catholic education. In addition to
Bob, graduates of CCH include their
son Don Meihaus (’72) and grandsons,
Don Haskell (’95), John Rasp (’00) and
Dan Rasp (’04). Daughter Carol Rasp
is a Spanish teacher at Covington
Catholic High School in her 18th year.
Covington Catholic High School
seeks to make financial aid available to
any needy student. This scholarship,
combined with Covington Catholic’s
unique “work study” program, will
continue to make this initiative
possible. All need-based aid requires
students to work for the school,
as both an additional subsidy and
to teach a strong work ethic to
scholarship recipients. This year 65
students qualified for over $245,000
in financial aid. 2010/2011 was the
highest need year in the history of
Covington Catholic. $50,000 received for Technology Upgrades
In January of 2010, CCH announced the launch of “A Drive for Technical Excellence,” a
campaign to provide the school with the latest in technological upgrades. To date, the
school has raised nearly $200,000. While the campaign has an overall goal of $300,000,
immediate improvements are being made incrementally.
Diane Kohlhepp heard about a pressing
need to upgrade the network servers in
the school, create a “wireless” campus,
and provide the faculty with new
laptops. In the spring of 2011, Covington
Catholic’s principal was speechless and
grateful when Diane and her husband
Jerry Kohlhepp contributed $50,000.00
to the campaign.
The Kohlhepp family has two sons, Allen
(’94) and Aaron (’99) and a daughter
Courtney. Diane has worked for CCH
for 17 years in various positions in the
development department, the guidance
office and presently in the main office as
an administrative assistant.
Dan Tieman Scholarship
Reaches $60,000 with a
Challenge Grant
Shortly after the completion of the
initial Dan Tieman scholarship
drive, we were approached by
Dennis Doyle, a dear friend of
Covington Catholic. While he had
no relationship with Coach Tieman,
he was inspired by his story and the
outpouring of gifts that had already
come. Mr. Doyle established a
challenge grant to push the Tieman
Scholarship from the initial $10,000
to $60,000. He asked alums to
contribute another $20,000 and he
would match it with $30,000. CCH
alums responded enthusiastically
and by mid May we had risen to the
challenge!
Unexpected
Surprise
In June Covington Catholic received
an unexpected surprise: A check
for over $19,000! A parent of an
alumnus graciously left a percentage
of his trust to Covington Catholic
and other institutions. This gift was
unrestricted. It will be used to help
pay for the Schmidt property that
was recently purchased through a
loan from the Diocese.
Did you know that the most common
form of a planned gift is through
a bequest or will? It can be for a
specific amount, a percentage of your
estate or as the residual/remaining
beneficiary after specific bequests
are met. It can be an unrestricted
or restricted gift and may reduce or
eliminate federal estate taxes. You
can help generations to come by
putting CCH in your will or by talking
to a financial expert about a planned
gift. By doing this you will ensure
Covington Catholic’s continuity in
our mission to educate young men
academically, spiritually, socially, and
physically. If you would like to speak
with us about making a planned gift,
please contact Development Director
Sue Finke at 859-448-2247 x 1.

CCH
expansion progress
and field upgrades
The green house by the lake, known as
the Beard property, is only a memory
now. Demolition of the house was
needed to finish off the clearing of the
land, which now yields almost five acres.
The planning committee has decided to
use this land for much needed practice
fields for multiple sports including
football, baseball, and soccer. Where the
green house once stood there will soon
be a shelter with restrooms. The plan is
to have additional parking added by the
Griffin Centre in order to accommodate
alumni crowds and students using the
fields. The planning committee is also
working on a sprinkler system and
landscaping around the fields. The
timeline for completion of these projects
is fall of 2012.
Another big improvement coming our
way will be a new entrance connecting
the campus to St. Joseph Lane. This
will be a fully functioning light that will
allow traffic to turn right or left out of
the premises. Hopefully this will help
with the flow of traffic during busy
times! Thanks to Traci Kautzman, Don
Stegman, Carlo Wessels, Jim Berling, Jay
Bayer and the City of Park Hills for all
the work and planning to make this new
entrance a reality.
Finally, we are pleased beyond measure
with the work done to resurface our
track. After completing the building of
the Schott Sports Center it was the next
needed improvement. It is unbelievable
how nice the track looks and it screams
Colonel Pride as it is painted BLUE. You
really have to see it to believe it so come
on down and take a look. Thanks to Fred
McCoy, CCH past parent, for his help.

Service Shapes CCH
Students in Nicaragua
Thirty-nine CCH students, faculty,
and parents returned from Nicaragua
where they worked with the
international organization “Amigos
for Christ” digging water lines and
building a school cafeteria for the rural
poor. “Amigos for Christ” states as its
mission “to serve the Lord by serving
His poor.”
Joe Mangan, CCH Director of
Maintenance, Nick Hovan, PE teacher/
Football coach and Rich Andolina,
Religion teacher, chaperoned the
trip along with a number of parents.
Upon returning, Joe reflected that he
was amazed at the limited access to
resources that those they served had.
One woman they encountered spent
several hours daily carrying water
to her family from a contaminated
stream. Through work like that done
by the Covington Catholic team, those
served will gain access to clean and
reliable water sources. CCH volunteers
also helped set the stage for a school
feeding program that has hopes of
both attracting and maintaining
students in the elementary school.
Mangan said that many students drop
out as early as the third grade, as their
agrarian families require their labor at
home.
CCH students were exposed to

CCH Juniors
Retreat into the Mountains
On July 3, 2011, 28 juniors from Covington Catholic and 6 chaperones left
Northern Kentucky for the majestic mountains of Dubois, Wyoming for a once in a
lifetime weeklong spiritual retreat experience.
The trip was organized by Religion Department Chair, Al Hertsenberg, who
was joined by religion teachers Andy Zerhusen and Bill Snyder. The group stayed
at beautiful Ring Lake Ranch, and experienced activities such as hiking, horseback
riding and sightseeing, as well as nightly retreat activities that challenged the
students to deepen their faith and strengthen their personal relationships.
The group also had the opportunity to spend a day inside Yellowstone National
Park, where they witnessed an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty. This was
the 7th year for the retreat, and many of the students have commented on what an
amazing journey of faith and discovery it was for them.
Looking back on the retreat, religion teacher Andy Zerhusen commented “It
was an honor to take part in this retreat, and I certainly thank the students and
their families for making it a success. What a wonderful tradition for the CCH
Religion Department.”
blackouts to out-house bathroom
facilities. In their free time, the group
explored Nicaragua by climbing two
volcanoes and making a day trip to
the coast. Looking back on their time,
Mangan reflected “This trip actually
changes our kids. It challenges them
physically, emotionally, mentally and
spiritually.”

school by Traci, Tony and Toby
Griffin. The building, now known
as the Griffin Centre, will be home
to a variety of facilities including
the Alumni Center on the lower
level. This portion of the property is
being remodeled with the sweat, inkind gifts, and monetary donations
of alumni. It is quite a team effort!
When completed, it will include the
administrative offices of Development,
Alumni, Athletic Boosters and a
reception hall for alumni activities.
Working gas fireplace is a welcoming feature to the congregation area.
Removed temporary wall to make more space in the main congregating area.
The Alumni Center will become the
meeting place for Colonels before and
after athletic events as well as a home
base for our Alumni Association.
This space will include display cases
for Covington Catholic memorabilia,
a fireplace, game area and a large
gathering area complete with kitchen
and service counter.
On Saturday, September 3rd,
Covington Catholic will host LaSalle
for its first home football game of
the season. All Covington Catholic
Alumni in our database will receive
a voucher for free admittance to the
game, or you can use the voucher
from the back of this publication.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will
follow the football game and include
a reception with food and drinks. All
alumni and their families are welcome.
