Thank you to everyone who volunteered this year by helping at registration, donating food, making phone calls, or attending meetings. Your volunteerism makes MHS a better place! Special thanks to Mrs. Daugherty who presented the Summer Reading Requirements and summer reading lists to parents and students. She spoke with eloquence, and shared her wealth of knowledge about literature with the attendees. Also, thank you to the English Department Staff for the many hours spent discussing and accessing the Indiana Academic Standards to ensure our student's college and career readiness upon graduation. Their efforts are commendable and the students and parents are very grateful! Many, many thanks to the numerous volunteers who helped make the Reality Store a rousing success. Reality Store would not be possible without the many people willing to give of their time. Everyone did a super job and the students learned real life lessons. We need extra hands to help prepare an end of the year dessert buffet for the teachers. The buffet will be on Tuesday, May 12th. Please contact Debby Flahaven if you want to help or donate a dessert. The last PTO meeting will be on May 6th at 7:00 pm in the LGI Room. Attendees will discuss and vote on a PTO Board for next year. REALITY STORE The 2015 Reality Store was another success. Students enrolled in second semester PE classes participated in this activity. They were assigned occupations with a monthly salary, and had to move from station to station, paying taxes and bills such as student loans, utilities, groceries, child care and insurance. They had the opportunity to donate to a charitable organization, and if they had any money left at the end of the month, they could consider going on vacation or buying tickets to a sporting event or concert. Each student received their check register to take home. Ask your child for their check register and see how they managed their finances! Students had a chance to evaluate their experience from the Reality Store. Here is what a few of them said: “I was able to experience what my parents experience every month and how it can be difficult.” “I want to have fun with my kid, but I want to keep my money too.” “I really liked it, but I was broke.” “It’s important to find a good paying job to live a good life.” “It was very fun interacting with the people.” “I learned that as an adult, you have to make big decisions.” “I realized I need to do better in school so I can enjoy the job I want.” The Reality Store takes place every April and volunteers are always welcome! The activity is a joint venture between the MHS Guidance Department, Munster parent Debby Flahaven and volunteer parents and community members. GUIDANCE NEWS PREPARING JUNIORS for COLLEGE During the month of April, the counselors worked with Junior students on a website called “Into Careers” (www.incis.intocareers.org). Students researched admission information such as necessary GPA and average standardized test scores for college admission. Students also completed an activity where they were asked to compare and contrast different colleges on a number of criteria, e.g. cost of attendance or programs of study. The students were encouraged to use this information when deciding which selecting colleges. We encourage you to ask your son or daughter about this activity. Also, this past month, juniors were required to register for Parchment.com. Munster High school partners with Parchment.com to provide secure online transcript ordering. Students will use their accounts when they need to order transcripts for self-view, to send to colleges, for scholarship applications, or any other program seeking academic information. This is the first year students were signed up for Parchment via email. Please encourage your students to register for Parchment MUNSTER EDUCATION FOUNDATION The Munster Education Foundation can help you show your appreciation to that someone special who is affiliated with the Munster school system. IU HONORS PROGRAM The MHS World Languages Department is pleased to announce the results of this year’s IU Honors Program in Foreign Study selection process. Candidates who elect to participate will spend seven weeks living and studying in a foreign country (Spain, France, Mexico or Chile) spending time with their host families, attending classes and traveling in their new “home” countries. This is a rigorous adventure that guarantees that students will attain a level of fluency that they never could have attained by simply studying in a U.S classroom. The students listed below have been delegated as either participants or alternates, or were accepted but could not participate. Regardless of their current status (or whether they elect to go) we wish to congratulate them for the honor of being selected from among the state’s top language students. For those that will go, we wish them all of the best in their adventures abroad this summer: Buen Viaje y Bon Chance ! Isabel Garcia (French) Claire LeMonnier (French) Abigail Pennanen (French) Michelle Weller (French) Serena Patel (Spanish) Anna Riggs (Spanish) Daniel Spencer III (Spanish) Jeffrey Stoll (Spanish) Anisha Vavilala (Spanish) Jordan Wright (Spanish) Emily Wierman (Spanish) Jacob Yalowitz (Spanish) MUSTANG CAFE This March marked the opening of the doors of the Mustang Café, a new venture with the goal of bringing together all students and adults at Munster High School to enjoy beverages and snacks before school, during lunch hours and (eventually) after school and during select after-school events. The model and inspiration for the café came from such places as Ada’s café, a coffeehouse in California that employees special needs employees and focuses on locally-sourced, organic products as well as other Indiana schools that have built coffee houses within their schools to bring coffee community, fundraising, voluntarism and fundraising opportunities into their schools. Mustang Café’s driving forces are Mrs. Needles, her classroom aides, students, and peer buddies who staff the café during lunch time and sell slushies, gatoraide, water and granola bars. Currently, morning coffee house hours are being beta tested by faculty, admin and student volunteers who plan to move towards a set schedule by the end of the year; current offerings include hot coffees & teas as well as hot chocolate and will expand to include iced coffees, chai and iced tea. Mustang Café was funded by a campaign launched on GoFundMe and was generously supported by the community, school board, staff and even students. $1,400 was raised in weeks and then the Munster Booster Club supplied an anonymous donor who provided the remaining funds necessary to open the doors of the café. We welcome donations of K-cups and look forward to being able to serve the public at future events. The Café is located between the Athletic Office and the field house. We would like to thank everyone for their generous support for this venture and we are excited to move forward with this exciting new feature of Munster High School. SPRING MUSICAL BEAUTY AND THE BEAST The Munster Theatre Company (the Performing Arts Department of Munster High School) is pleased to present the musical Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, with book Linda Woolverton, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The Artistic Staff includes: Larry A Brechner; Producer/Director; Carol Lynn Brechner Producer/Director; William Woods; Music/Orchestra Pit Director; and Lane Terry as Student Choreographer. The Munster Theatre Company production will feature a cast of 60 in the production plus over 40 on production staff and musicians. The classic story of Belle (Allison Hemingway), a young woman whose interest in her books makes her not quite fit in this provincial town. Gaston (Casey Terry), the town’s selfappointed big shot, has his sights set on Belle for his wife aided by his sidekick Lefou (Elliott Fus). Belle’s inventor father, Maurice (Ethan Courney), gets lost in the woods seeking refuge from a pack of wolves, and appears at a castle of the Beast (Thomas Speranza). The Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress, imprisons Maurice for trespassing, and Belle upon finding him there offers to stay forever if the Beast releases Maurice. Belle discovers the whole household has fallen under the curse with the castle’s staff transformed into enchanted objects: Cogworth (Drew Adams) a clock, Lumiere (Rohan Chatterjee) a candelabra, Mrs Potts (Rachel Jamrose) a teapot, Chip (Chloe Jancosek) a tea cup, Babette (Anna Bilse) a feather duster, and De La Grande Bouche (Peyton Tinder) a Wardrobe. They all try to make Belle comfortable in her new surroundings, and she discovers that the curse will end and they all will be restored to their former selves if the Beast can learn to love and be loved before the last petal of the rose falls, otherwise they will be doomed for all eternity. Meanwhile Gaston paints Maurice as a lunatic and schemes with the local proprietor of the local insane asylum, D’Arque (Billy McDunn) in order to blackmail Belle into marriage, which has returned to the village and confirms that the Beast is real. Based on the classic fairytale and Disney’s 1991 animated feature film, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST premiered on Broadway at the Palace Theatre on April 25, 1991, running for over 5000 performances through July 2007 staring Terrance Mann as The Beast and Susan Egan as Belle. It was Disney’s first venture adapting one of their animated features films onto a Broadway musical. Now an established practice, Dinsey brought The Lion King (1997), Tarzan (2006), Mary Poppins (2006), The Little Mermaid (2008), Newsies-the Musical (2012), and Aladdin (2014). Disney is also adapting Broadway musicals into live-action films most recently with Into the Woods, and in 2017 Beauty and the Beast featuring Emma Thompson (Harry Potter) as Belle, Luke Evens (The Hobbit, Dracula Untold) as Gaston, and Dan Stevens (Downton Abby) as the Beast. An ironic coincidence that on April 16, Susan Egan, the original Belle in Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast appeared in concert as part of the Northwest Indiana Concert Association series. Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will run Thursday, April 30; Friday, May 1; Saturday, May 2 at 7pm, and Sunday, May 3 at 2pm in Munster Auditorium. Tickets are $7 at the door (senior and student tickets $5). Tickets are available at the Auditorium Box Office on performance nights.
