Locally Grown and Family Owned for 40 Years!
Sun Nurseries, Inc. has been
growing plants for home owners
since 1973. The original 20 acre
parcel was purchased in 1971 and
has grown into the facility pictured
on the back cover. In the 70’s, Erik
Rosenbaum opened the nursery for
sales part time while he worked full
time as an electrical engineer for
Bendix Corporation. By 1981 the
nursery was open full time. You can
shop here seven days a week from
March till Christmas Eve.
The nursery has since added 94
more acres a few miles away in
Carroll County in order to produce
the tens of thousands of plants
we offer for sale. During the past
40 years we have committed to
producing quality plants for our
customers.

The Sun Nurseries Advantage
Real Soil in Planting Mix & Locally Grown = A Winning Combination
Buying from a local grower is a
huge advantage over garden
centers or big box stores.
As a grower we strive to produce
the best quality plants for sale. To
accomplish this we use real soil in
our potting mixes and grow over
2,500 varieties of plants (including
trees) that are acclimated to local
conditions.
The soil advantage:
Did you know that soil is very
important in the development of
roots and contributes towards healthy
plants? Roots push through the
soil as they grow. Plants grown with
real soil have stronger roots than
plants grown in artificial soil. Real
soil also has better water retention
than artificial soil, which dries out
more quickly. Another advantage to
plants grown in real soil is there is a
better interface in the ground. Soil is
meeting soil rather than artificial soil
meeting soil. Our plants are grown
right here in real soil mix. This means
less shock and more survivability
when planted in your yard.
The locally grown advantage:
Plants transported on trucks are
often coming from out of state and
grown under very different weather
conditions. They will need special
care and attention while adjusting to a
new location. With the plants we grow,
there is much less shock and stress.
This means more success for you.
We believe our plants are the best
quality you can purchase.

Our Landscape Design Services
Our talented designers and experienced installation crews consistently
receive outstanding reviews from satisfied customers. They handle small
projects and consultations, large-scale designs and installations, and
everything in between.
Enjoy a Beautifully Landscaped Yard
One of our designers will meet you at your home to discuss your wants
and needs. The designer will take measurements and other pertinent
information, which he or she will use to create your plan. You will be called
when your plan is finished and your designer will discuss plant selections
with you at the nursery.
At the time of your appointment, the designer collects a deposit based on
the scope of your project. The deposit is refunded to you as a 10% discount
as you purchase materials, until you have received the full amount back.
Ultimately, the plan costs you nothing. You may choose to install the plan
yourself or have our landscaping crews install the plan for you.
Deposit Amounts:

Sketch Service
Do it yourself (DIY) gardeners can use the CAD design service
described above to plan their garden. We also offer a sketch service
intended for customers who want plant and layout suggestions for a
weekend do-it-yourself project. If you have a small area and need a
quick idea of what to do, a fast hand sketch can be helpful. You can
have the sketch and bring home the plants in the same day. The rest
is up to you.

Reading the Signs at Sun Nurseries
Tips For Interpretation
All the plants that we carry in the
nursery have signs in front of them
that give certain specifications for
each plant type; how tall will it get?
when does it bloom? how long is
the bloom time? does it have fall/
winter interest? The one bit that
causes the most confusion is “10 year
maintained size”.
The “10 year maintained size“ is
the size of a ten year old plant.
If the plant is cared for and
watered, fertilized, and pruned as
recommended, it is our experience
that plant growth will closely align
with our information. It does not
mean the plant will stop growing in
ten years and stay that size.
If you are using the plant around
your foundation, you may want to
continue pruning and keep it the 10
year size. If it is a border planting,
you will want to let it keep growing
beyond the 10 year size.
Many plants are available in 3, 5 and
7 gallon pots. These are already
several years old when you plant.
They will not need ten years to reach
the indicated size. Some are already
bigger.

The symbols on the right side of this example sign indicate this plant is
native, attracts wildlife, tolerates wet conditions, and is deer resistant.
Shrubs, specimen plants, and
broadleaf evergreens may need some
pruning the first year. Some plants
need a minimum amount of pruning;
evergreens, ornamental trees, or
shade trees. Pay close attention to
the sizes to allow the plants enough
room to grow.
The internet is a great source for
almost everything. Please remember,
just because the internet says a plant
gets a certain size does not mean
that it gets to a certain size here in
our zone or in your lifetime. There
are also other factors that influence
growth rate such as exposure,
moisture, and soil condition. Some
plants can be in the same bed and
one will die and the others thrive
just feet apart. Proper placement of
a plant ensures that it will grow as
expected, so putting a sun lover in a
shady area is not going to give the
plant a chance to get to it’s “10 year
maintained “size.

3Q
When is the best time to plant:
Do plants really care what time of year they are planted?
Many times the right time to plant is
when you have the time and/or the
money. When it comes to time of year
for spring versus fall planting, there
are positives and negatives to both.
Spring
the ground and wrap it in burlap.
(That’s where the phrase “balled &
burlapped” came from.) When the
weather warms and the spring rains
dry up, it is indeed “too late” to dig a
plant out of a nursery field.
Most people like to plant in the
spring, it just seems like the right
time. They are anxious for spring,
especially after a long, cold winter.
Typically there is a larger selection
to choose from in the spring. The
negative is having a long, potentially
hot and dry summer ahead of you,
which in turn means watering as often
as every other day.
At that point, the plant has put out
too much growth and it would be
too much stress on the plant to
disturb its roots. With autumn’s cooler
temperatures and (hopefully) rain, it is
usually safe to dig most plants. There
are some exceptions: Magnolia,
Crape Myrtle, and Leyland Cypress to
name just a few. They are best dug in
the spring.
Summer
It is never “too late” to plant our
container-grown plants. You just have
to be committed to watering twice
weekly, or every other day during a
drought.
Many people believe that once
summer comes it is “too late” to
plant. This comes from the days
before the widespread use of plastic
nursery pots. In those days, you
would go out to the nursery, look up
and down the rows and pick the plant
you wanted. The nursery employee
would go and dig your plant out of
Fall
Many people like to plant in the fall,
falsely believing that they don’t need
to water trees and shrubs that are
planted in the fall. Fall is an excellent
time to plant. The air temperature
cools, but the soil stays warm for
some time, allowing roots to continue
to grow well into late fall. Watering is
necessary though; continue to water
according to instructions until the
ground freezes hard. Most plants can
be planted as long as the ground
is not frozen. Consult a nursery
associate for handling of specific
plants.
The bottom line is to plant when you
have the time to do the planting, and
plan for watering after the fact, either
by hand or irrigation system.
