Solid Mineral Fuels
This section should be read in conjunction with Part 1 - Appliances Burning Solid Mineral Fuels & Wood. To ensure satisfactory
performance of domestic solid fuel appliances it is important to use fuels that are of a suitable type and size.
The solid mineral fuels listed below have been tested and approved by HETAS on behalf of the fuel producer. The testing and
approval combined with a quality assurance scheme enables the fuel to carry a HETAS approval logo for which the customer
should look. Petroleum coke is not recommended by HETAS for use on solid fuel burning appliances because its use can
result in serious damage to grates and other appliance components in the fuel bed area.
However, a number of products which contain petroleum coke or are blends of petroleum coke with other fuels have been
tested and approved. For these fuels approval is conditional on the manufacturer applying and maintaining stringent
product control. Some appliance manufacturers restrict the use of these fuels to appliances with high chrome or chrome
steel bottom grates, which may be supplied as an optional extra. Refer to manufacturers instructions for additional advice.
The Approved Coal Merchants Scheme
The Approved Coal Merchants Scheme (ACMS) is the body recognised by Trading Standards as
the regulator for the coal trade. Members are fully trained and are committed to serving the
customer. All Approved Coal Merchants have agreed to abide by the Coal Trade Code which has
the following principles as a basis for honest and fair trading:•
Supply good quality Coal and Smokeless Fuel correctly described
•
Ensure that packed fuels are marked with maximum information
•
Ensure staff have a basic knowledge of the Retail Coal Trade
•
Supply suitable fuels for particular appliances
•
Investigate all consumer complaints properly
•
Display a detailed and up to date price list
The Scheme is funded by the coal industry but has an Independent Chairman and area panels to help resolve consumer
complaints. Approved Coal Merchants display the blue and red logo on their delivery tickets and vehicles.
The HETAS official Guide is of great importance in ensuring that members of the ACMS can advise their customers correctly
on which fuels are suitable for their appliance. It is an integral part of the Home Study Course available to all merchants and
their staff.

Natural Smokeless Fuels
The following named natural smokeless fuels have achieved a high standard in performance tests for closed appliance
fuels conducted by HETAS LTD, and are generally approved as closed appliance fuels. To ensure safe operation when using
Anthracite Small Nuts on closed appliances, such as room heaters, it is necessary to make sure that high proportions of
undersize fuel and fines are not fed onto the firebed. The user should also consult the Appliance Manufacturer’s operating
instructions regarding the use of this size of fuel for his specific appliance.

Firelighters
Ease of lighting solid fuel fires is an important factor for consumers. HETAS has developed a standardised method by which
firelighters can be assessed for their performance when igniting a solid fuel fire to achieve an established and bright fire from
a cold start within an acceptable time period. Firelighters that are able to achieve the levels of performance required are
listed below and the manufacturers are entitled to display the HETAS Approved Product Logo.
It is important for safety reasons to abide by the manufacturer’s instructions at all times when using these products.
