MINUTES OF REGIONAL CLUBS
REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE
WEST CHESTER, PA - OCTOBER 2, 1981
Chairman Alan Riga called the meeting to order at 3 :38 PM.
Members in attendance were: Danalee Saar* - STCGA; Miriam Stamm* STCM; Herb & Linda Quarles - STCWV; Lorayne Lapin - STCGNY; Betty
McArthur* & Ann Woolridge - STCSFB; Kathi Brown* - STCNE; Shauna
Pratt & Carla LaCoe - GDSTC; Mary Severson - STCGH; Michael & Christine

Alan Riga, Chairman.
Minutes of June 12 '81 were reviewed and approved.
The RCRC mailing list was updated by those in attendance.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
SURVEY COMMITTEE: (R . Marshall & Kathi Brown). Dr. Wm. Priester,
DVM , Un. of Davis, CA is collecting data and classifying animal diseases. Robert
Marshall sent Dr. Priester a copy of the draft questionnaire presented at the
June 12th meeting, and a copy of Alan Riga's AKC Gazette article about using
AKC records. Dr. Priester pointed out several problems with the questionnaire:
1) if we send out 500 questionnaires we would be fortunate to get 100 returned,
which is not a random sampling; 2) in order to establish a random sample we
will have to know why people did not respond . He suggested an alternative
questionnaire where he and his associates would assist us and we would use only
members of the STCA. Bob Marshall passed out a rewritten questionnaire on
parvo virus and breeding problems (copy available). At the Chicago June 12th
meeting 7 5 copies were distributed and only 12 were returned; this is a low
response rate.
Dr. Alan Riga will put a revised proposal together and submit it to the Un. of
Davis. Dr. Riga asked for comments from STCA members on the questionnaire
that is out. The approved proposal will be sent to the STCA membership. Members are asked to remember that the more data we get back, the more reliable
the conclusions we can draw after applying statistical techniques.

no immunity to distemper, reported Kathi Brown. The immunity loss lasted up
to a year in some puppies. The ADOA recently sent out a notice recommending
puppies NOT be innoculated with the parvo shot until they were 15 t o 16 weeks
of age. A time table for innoculation was distributed by Helen Prince. It was
recommended that by the next meeting the shot records of as many breeders
as possible be submitted for summary.
An outline of a brochure on " Scotties" will be put together by Ann Wooldridge for presentation at the STCA Feb. 6th Board meeting.
The next meeting of the RCRC will be held on JUNE 11, 1982, Friday , at
3 :30 to 5 :30 PM in Seattle, Washington, pending approval of the STCA President.
The meeting was adjourned at 5 :33 PM
Respectfully submitted ,

CARING FOR "THE KID S"
by Melvin A. Horst, Ph .D.
Since the beginning with our little Highland friends, I have had an inordinate interest in their well being, physically and mentally and in general, their
overall health. Of course, in our breeding, things such as temperament, type, and
ultimate body conformation were important but the bottom line was whether
they were happy and healthy.
I suppose this was a natural concern, as I am involved in food product
research and development and I care about the American diet.
With my Highlanders, it is somewhat different; they are my children and
I try to design a diet for them which is the best nutritionally I can give themwhich is why I began putting all my dogs on Vitamin C or, more specifically,
Sodium Ascorbate. I take mega-doses of Vitamin C myself as the result of
intense study of the work done at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and
Medicine in Menlo Park, California. Dr. Pauling's work has been , to say the
least, controversial, but the overriding fact is that Vitamin C in sufficient quantities does cause the human body to produce interferon, which is a complex
protein and has definitely been proven to give the organism natural immunity
against many outside invasions by pathogens.
The work is too lengthy and voluminous to ever footnote it here, but
reprints of much of it can be gained by writing Dr. Pauling.
I personally have no wish to get involved in controversy, but will stick
with the facts which apply to my .dogs and to dogs mentioned herein from other
breeders.
I must admit that when first considering Vitamin C for the kids, I had no
feeling of urgency; after all, dogs produce Vitamin C in their livers: upon further
investigation, I discovered that this production is about 40-60 mg. I day .
The pet food manufacturers don't feel the need to fortify their products
with additional "C" as "the naturally produced 'C' is sufficient." The preceding
statement is one given to me by a colleague who is in charge of research for a
major pet food producer. My question was, sufficient to do what?
After investigation, from various sources, but primarily the work done in
India on goats, the above information couldn't be further from the truth.
The facts based on international research are that in canines and other
quadrapeds, the amount of Vitamin C produced won't even prevent scurvy and,
further, that Vitamin C is necessary in large doses (megadoses) to alleviate even
this condition.
The general consensus amongst researchers in the field is that dogs, like
humans at one time in their evolutionary past, could produce large quantities
of Vitamin C, but through evolutionary development lost this ability.
When I began giving my Scots "Vitamin C" in megadoses, I began by
scaling down on a mg/kg equivalent of human dosage , which worked out to be
2200 mg/dog/day. I began having problems with diarrhea and excessive urination
and hence discontinued usage and contacted Dr. Pauling to hopefully gain some
insight into what was hap pening. It was the result of this call that really put me
on the right track, as Dr. Pauling referred me to a practicing DVM in San Jose,
California-Dr. Wendell Belfield. (The short article in the BAGPIPER, Summer
edi tion about Vitamin C for curing Parvo was a citing of the work done over
the past 8-10 years by Dr. Belfield .)

Since that time I have spoken and corresponded with Dr. Belfield about
Vitamin C, and in the process have gained invaluable information about other
Orthomolecular (meaning "right molecule") materials for animals' dietary
supplementations with reference to Vitamin C as a cure for Parvo with 25%
of Vitamin C in a glucose and saline carrier intravenously and has cured about
90% of those animals!
His research agrees with my thoughts and that is, why wait for the animal
to become diseased and then treat the symptoms-why not give the animal
immunity to disease?
Dr. Belfield as well as researchers in Japan, England and India have, through
their work with Vitamin C (namely Ascorbates, which is the "business end" of
the molecule) came to the obvious conclusion that megadoses (for Scotties and
Westies, about 3000 mg/day) of Vitamin C or Ascorbates stimulates the production of interferon, which is the FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE of the animal, and
that acquired or "natural" immunity (namely production of antibodies) is a last
ditch effort to ward off invasion from disease-producing organisms and toxic
substances. (Interferon has been definitely proven to stop the growth of cancerous cells.)
I have known for some time that all dog foods, dry and wet, which have
grain inclusions are abundantly supplied with lead, and that Vitamin C combined
with zinc will purge the dog's body of the lead and other toxic heavy metals, and
new beneficial results are being discovered as work progresses.
Miss Barbara Kingsbury of Barberry Knowe Kennels, Canadensis , Pennsylvania, has had astounding results with mega C therapy! In the case of one of her
15-year-old miniature smooth Dachshunds, which had grown completely senile ,
"not even knowing what was going on," began playing and acting, or trying to
act, like a puppy again (there is work being done which points to the possibility
of senility being produced by a VIRUS) after one month of mega "C" therapy.
The other animal was a smooth miniature Dachshund, eight years of age,
who developed throat lesions to the point of almost total abstinence from food .
Since Miss Kingsbury had had two experiences with animals of the same bloodlines before and had them treated unsuccessfully with antibiotics, and they
eventually died, she simply decided to let this one live out her life until the
throat condition and weakened physiology would take their toll, as was the case
with the two other Doxies. I suggested she try Vitamin C. She did reluctantly,
and after one month the lesions were gone, the animal's appetite had returned
and the animal was again active and playing-even chasing cats.
Mrs. Janet Bartholomew at Hillview Kennels in Des Moines, Iowa, has
had similar experiences, and these are just a few of the many reports I have
received about application of Vitamin C, not to mention the case histories
recorded by Dr. Belfield.
Since reading the reports from the results of the testing of Parvo virus
vaccines at Cornell University in the AKC Gazette, and from personal experiences,
we have decided not to innoculate against Parvo. There is no literature of research work available to attest to the efficiency of present vaccines, or to the
possibility of the vaccine actually causing the disease, but as long as there is a
chance of either not giving the animal even "last ditch" type immunity or
possibly inducing the disease, I personally will refrain from its use.
We have taken a three-stage "natural" approach to protection of our
animals:
1) Controlling fleas (vectors for Parvo and other diseases).
2) Mega C therapy.
3) Use of non-toxic disinfectants.

FLEA CONTROL
On a monthly basis we spray the grounds, runs and all sleeping quarters
with a low toxicity insecticide which has an LD50 lower than Malathion, which
is the most widely recommended insecticide for flea control.
The product we use contains an ingredient, pyroferos, an agent which does
kill the flea and other insects. One big difference between this product and the
Malathion product is that the flea cannot build resistance to the product, as it
'can with Malathion!
We had the experience with Malathion and it becomes ineffective after
3-4 applications. Besides, the animals as well as humans can run and play in the
treated areas in as little as 20 minutes after application.
II.
MEGA "C" THERAPY
In addition to other dietary supplements, we use 300 mg/day Sodium
Ascorbate in water solution, and simply add it to the morning meal. (Belfield
produces a total product, MEGA "C" PLUS.)
We begin with puppies, giving them 500 mg/day, increasing at 3-4 day
intervals by 500 mg until stool tolerance (runny bowels) is reached. This invariable ends up being around 2500-3000 mg, as each dog is different. (Incidentally, loose bowels can be controlled with another natural product-carob
powder.) One then reduces dosage by 250 mg and waits 3-4 days until stool is
solid or plastic.
III. NON-TOXIC DISINFECTANTS
We are dead-set against the use of chlorine (bleach) as disinfectants! They
are:
1) Carcinogenic @600 ppm levels.
2) Toxic (form toxic gases, etc.).
3) Dangerous to eyes, mouth , mucous membranes (read label on Clorox
bottle).
4) Not predictable (dependent on soft water and phenolic and quaternary
ammonia compounds have many drawbacks, as the enclosed literature
indicates).
We chose to use a "tamed-iodine" based product as a general disinfectant,
because it is safe! You can even get it in the dogs' eyes, and we have used it
topically on hot spots , etc. It does not kill by toxicity as all others do; it relies
on simple oxidation of the bacteria or virus, and since it works in this fashion,
microorganisms cannot build resistance to it!
This is not to mention its use as a fungicide.
This material is used as a spray on all eating and drinking containers and
daily rinse-down of runs, etc. We also use it as a paw sanitizer at shows and
topically on cuts or abrasions to speed healing.
Best of all , this product's self-indicating (amber) color tells you that you
are always working with an effective level. This is especially important in hard
water areas such as here in Southern California, as chlorines react with the water
hardness, so one is never sure one is working with an effective level.
I could go on for an entire volume on the uses of the combined iodine
product, but will close by simply stating that it is effective and, most of all,
safe for my kids and backed by 20 years of research.
I sincerely hope that all who read this article and who love their dogs as
I do will consider these approaches to general health-not necessarily these
products or these methods, but at least think about it. In many discussions with
Scottie and Westie breeders all over the country, I have concluded that many of
us have been (and still are) in the middle-ages as far as the health of our animals
is concerned , and I guess my approach is a constant seeking of new and better
ways to keep our Scots healthy. The few mentioned above work! I have tried
many other approaches which didn't , as I'm sure we all have.

I sincerely hope that this article will help some of our kids, and I hope all.
Our local Scottie club , STC of California, was addressed by Mr. B. Hawkins and
many of the members have adopted many of his recommendations about animal
care. His address was prompted after attending one of our meetings and listening
to a speaker expound on the use of 600 ppm of chlorine (bleach) as effective
against Parvovirus.
I simply wanted to cry as I was genuinely concerned about the animals
involved, and how we could do something like this to someone we love so much
- I have lost Scotties before to lymphosarcoma and other cancers , and hopefully
through the program we have adopted will lessen this possibility.
I would like to thank THE BAGPIPER for asking me to write this article ,
and if it only helps one of our kids it has certainly been worth the effort.

The STCM's Fall Fun Match was held September 19 at the home of Peggy and
Sandy Mcillwain. Sandy judged and did a very nice job with a total entry of 33.
Major wins were as follows:
BEST PUPPY IN MATCH - SANDGREG'S MOLLY MC GEE. Owners: John
and Barbara DeSaye.
BEST ADULT IN MATCH - ANSTAMM PARTY GIRL. Owner: Miriam Stamm.
BEST ADVANCED - SUN-RAY SUMMER SUN. Owner: Luanne Barney.
BEST JR. SHOWMAN - ANNE STEPHENSON.
Judge for the Jr. Showmanship and Adult Handling was Frank Morrow.
After the judging Frank got the surprise of his life when a group of his friends,
Dorothy Dawes, Barbara Palmer, Trish Maetell, Peg Mcillwain and John and
Barbara DeSaye , gave an impromptu handling demonstration.
John DeSaye AND his dog sat on the examining table. Peggy offered the
judge a bribe. Barb gave the judge a kiss, her cigarett, her grooming comb, and
her squeak toy . Trish asked sweetly to PLEASE place her first. The stars of the
show were Dorothy's pup wearing a "Killer" tee shirt and Barbara and "Lance"
laying motionless in the center of the ring! "Killer" was adjudged the winner; it
was felt that her poise, control and sweet temperament should not go unrewarded!

OBEDIENCE
by Ruth Tryon, Obedience Chairman
In everything we do there comes a time when we should stop and look at
where we have been, where we are now and how close we have come to our
objective. This is true in Obedience as in all other activities. So it can well be
the time for us to look at Mac, his progress and our contribution, both good
and bad, to his performance.
It really means going back and checking our basics. As handlers and trainers
we probably contribute more to Mac's failures and problems than he does. As
Mac's work improves we too often tend to get sloppy and careless in our handling, putting more and more of the responsibility of teamwork on him. When
you give the command "Mac, heel" are you starting off before the word heel?
This means Mac starts his heeling lagging, not because of his error but because
of yours. And how about your footwork! This is such an important part of
handling and is too often neglected. It is probably time to re-practice your
turns, changes in gait and halts by yourself. Amazing, but you will probably
find you have become a bit careless about clean, sharp footwork. Are you
expecting Mac to make up for your stumbling around and errors? Don't ever
forget you and Mac are a team, and teamwork requires as much of you as of
Mac. So polish your own performance and then get to Mac's.
The fundamental thing in Mac's training is his attention to you and your
commands. So go back t o " Watch me." With Mac at your side in heel position, tell him "Watch me." The minute his eyes and attention are diverted
MOVE. Don't say a word - just move in any direction, and rapidly . Catching
him off guard , he will correct himself actually for the snap of the lead will
remind him he wasn't paying attention to you. As soon as he comes along with
you PRAISE HIM . It won't take long for him to remember he is supposed to
be paying attention only to you, and you will notice improvement in his work
almost immediately. Heeling wide and lagging problems are basically problems
caused by handling and lack of attention on Mac's part. Get his attention sharpened up and everytime he starts to drift wide or lag, correct him with a snap of
the lead before he is really away from you. Again, he will catch on quickly.
Observe Mac carefully and learn to sense what he is about to do and correct
any error swiftly and surely. Sniffing is also lack of attention on his part. Those
scents on the ground may be delightful but he must be reminded that concentrating on you is essential, and also more rewarding-for it brings forth praise
and affection, very basic needs in his life. Mac probably won't crowd too often
in heeling as he learns quickly that your feet and his face connect under these
circumstances, not to his advantage. If his sits are slow , you have been relaxing
on correcting him . It may be a long way down there, but the faster and more
consistently you do it, in the end, the less you will have to. As for coming in to
you and sitting slightly to one side or the other, again, get your corrections in
and make sure you do it every time necessary. Evaluate Mac's errors very carefully and don't let him get into the habit of making them. Don't nag-make
your corrections clear, sharp and precise and Mac will be with you all the way.
No matter what the stage of training, never forget the ·PRAISE. You should
be quick to reprimand him when he makes a mistake, but you should also be
quick to praise him-and mean it! It cannot be stressed enough, never forget
the praise, nor can it be routine. It must be genuine for you are a pair working
together to make a team.

Another question to ask yourself-are you finding it more and more convenient to practice with Mac in the same place and with the result he does not
get the exposure to many types of situations and conditions that will give him
steadiness? It is an easy trap to fall into. Mac does so well at a certain place
that it becomes increasingly easy to use that area as the major training ground.
Check with yourself about how recently you have been to different sites and
it it is quite a while, go to them !
Have you sent to the AKC for your copy of the "Obedience Regulations? "
If not, do so at once and when the pamphlet comes, read every word in it!
Remember, these are the rules of the game. Know them.
You will soon be showing Mac in Novice. So along with looking at his behavior, take a look at him . When he goes in the ring, make sure he looks his best .
Maybe he is a Champion or maybe he will never earn his Championship , but in
either case he is a find dog and you both want the world to know it . So have
him well groomed, well trained and you both will have a wonderful time. Happy
heeling!
