elieve it or not, Vidya Balan will
soon play the doomed sex bomb

Kapoor’s biopic on Silk Smitha
titled The Dirty Picture will
focus on the tragedy behind
the mask of the sex symbol
who provided titillation to
thousands of viewers but
died a lonely death.
Producer Ekta Kapoor
says, “I’ve been waiting for
almost two years for the script
to be ready. Now my writer Rajat
Arora has finally put the finishing
touches to the story of a woman who defied all conventions to become a sensation in the south but eventually committed suicide. This will be my most exhilarating and powerful production ever. It’s
about women’s empowerment and the
loneliness behind stardom.”
Ekta has signed Milan Luthria, who is
currently directing Once Upon A
Time In Bombay to direct The
Dirty Picture. Reliable sources
confirm that Vidya will be playing the lead in this purported
study of stardom, exploitation
and self-destruction. Vidya says,
“Yes, Milan Luthria has approached me. But it’s too early to
speak about it at the moment.”
Director Milan Luthria says, “I was
bowled over when I read the script. The story has everything; it’s a mirror of our
times. Silk Smitha was a cult figure in her
times. She spawned so many imitations, including Nylex Nalini and Disco Shanti.”

sexy Lekha Washington is back in
Chennai after being
away for months in
Mumbai and Goa, where
she was shooting for her debut Bollywood film Peter
Gaya Kaam Se with Rajeev
Khandelwal. The television
anchor-turned-actress, who
was spotted at a couple of
Kollywood parties recently
in the city, will be doing her
second film in Tamil with
Shiva and S P B Charan for
Oram Po fame PushkarGayathri’s film that’s tentatively titled Quarter Cutting.
After playing Vinay’s sister in the hit Jayam Kondaan, Lekha got offers only
to play sister roles though
she was interested in acting as the lead. It was at
this juncture that she anchored a show at the inaugural season of the IPL
which got her noticed.
Soon, she bagged the heroine’s role in Peter Gaya
Kaam Se, which made her
migrate to Mumbai. The
film, which was started as a
quickie by British filmmaker John Owen, took a little
over a year to be completed
and is getting ready for release this summer.
Meanwhile, she has quietly signed three films — a
Telugu multi-starrer titled
Vedam with Allu ArjunManoj Manchu-Anushka, a
Kannada film Thunta
Thunti with Golden Star
Ganesh and the PushkarGayathri Tamil flick. Says
Lekha, who is keeping a
low profile these days, “I
still think I have a lot to
prove and my time is yet to
come. I’m doing a femalecentric role in Peter Gaya…
and I’m sure that it will
open the gates for me.”

reports in Mumbai tabloids
that there’s a hot liplock between Rajeev and her in
the film, saying, “We don’t
have a kissing scene. And
contrary to rumours, I’m
not doing a negative role.
But yes, I do appear in a
bikini in the film. The film
is being edited by Anurag
Kashyap and those who
saw the trailer say I look
smashing.” So, where do
love and romance figure in
her scheme of things? Says
she, “Right now, I am in
love with my work. Work is
my boyfriend.”
Speaking of the IPL and
why she is not anchoring
this season, Lekha says, “I
don’t want to go back to television anchoring. Beyond
a point, people will not take
you seriously. My priorities
are different. I want to
make it big as a heroine.”
Lekha is very excited
about her role in Quarter
Cutting in which she plays
a 19-year-old school girl.
“The directors — Pushkar
and Gayathri — are making a rollicking fun movie
with just three characters;
Shiva, Charan and me. I
can’t reveal details
about it, but let me
tell you this –
it’ll be
kickass!”

Ashley back. She is
reportedly willing to give him
another chance but not until
August. “It’s my way or the
highway,” she is believed to
have told the footballer.
Cheryl told pals that she first
wants to get over with her
tour with the Black Eyed Peas
and Ashley’s commitment to
the World Cup. She is making
up her mind for a second
innings with the footie.
“However much she tries,
Cheryl just can’t let go. She

chance,” an international
