LAKE CHARLES, LA 70601 (337) 477-2704 | swicegoodmusiclc.com Teacher of the Month Student of the Month Willliam Christian—Saxophone Braelyn S.—Guitar/GAIN What instrument do you play and how long have you taken lessons? I play guitar, and I have been taking lessons for 3 years. I also sing, but I've never taken lessons. What is the thing you like most about teaching? My favorite thing about teaching is watching the student succeed, meet their goals, and learn. Being a teacher is more than just teaching the student the task at hand, it’s about teaching them life lessons and how to reach their goals easier and deal with situations life throws at them. Life isn’t always easy and neither is music. Slow down, deal with each situation (piece of music) as it comes up, and strive to be the best you can be. Who are your favorite musical artists? My favorite artists are Coldplay, Tom Petty, The Black Keys, Steve Miller Band, Alabama Shakes, The Beatles, The Lumineers, and Young The Giant. What are your other hobbies, besides music? Other hobbies I enjoy are reading, writing, and photography. How do you inspire students to practice more? I like to show the student how the piece of music is supposed to sound before they even start practicing. This gives them the goal to strive for. Then I like to give them a broken down step by step process to help them achieve the goal as quick and easy as possible. What part do you feel that the recital experience plays in a student’s development? Recitals help the student to deal with their nerves and how to perform in front of an audience (This goes along with question 1 and life lessons.) Recitals also allow the student to show off all the hard work that they have put into a piece of music, this can be a very rewarding experience. What is your favorite type of music and who are your favorite musical artists? My favorite type of music is jazz and all sub genres of jazz. My favorite artist are Chris Potter, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Dexter Gordon, Hank Mobley, John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Charlie Parker, and Cannonball Adderley. This is just a short list of some of them. Tell us about what you are working on now. Right now I’m working on my jazz improvisation and playing “outside the changes”. I recently bought a couple books with exercises on how to use the diminished and augmented scales. I also bought books about Coltrane changes and intervallic improvisation. Do you have any hobbies? My favorite hobby is to go bass fishing. I try to make it to Toledo Bend once or twice a month. I found that getting away from music and saxophone for a few days actually helps my playing and motivation toward music. What are your favorite foods? My favorite foods are pretty much anything vegan. Mangos and strawberries would have to be my favorites, though. And yes, I love to cook. Do you have a pet? I have a cat and an Australian shepherd. My cat's name is Pooters. The name suits her to a tee. My dog's name is Sarge. We got him a few months ago due to his previous owner dying. What is the coolest thing you’ve learned in the past 3 months? The coolest thing I've learned in the past three months is that I'm not too terrible at trigonometry. That's fascinating because I'm horrible at math. Do you perform at family gatherings? I sometimes play for my family when we are at the beach. They usually say that I'm good or that I did a good job and I should go on The Voice or something. Do you have performances individually or as a group coming up? Yes! G.A.I.N. will be performing at the end of this month! If you could give a quick tip for students taking lessons, what would it be? Work hard at whatever you are learning, and to see it as a privilege that you get to learn to play an instrument. Do you have performances individually or as a group coming up? Every Friday night and Sunday morning I play at Luna Bar & Grill with Street Side Jazz Band., most Saturday nights solo at Zeus, and every third Wednesday of the month I play at Jack Daniels Bar & Grill with Street Side Jazz Band. If you could give a quick tip for playing saxophone, what would it be? Air!!! Always use plenty of air when playing saxophone or any wind instrument. Braelyn and Pooters Trinity A. Naveed K. Kayla V.
