Lake Charles, Louisiana Professional Teachers, Atmosphere, Attitude, & Results Security monitored (337) 477-2704 | [email protected] www.swicegoodmusiclc.com facebook.com/swicegoodmusiclc Summer is here and we have some fun things planned for you to attend. Please note the flyer inside about the FREE drum circles in June. The flyer for the Washburn guitar event is also enclosed. Play anything you like for 100 seconds and get entered to win a $100.00 gift certificate for one of the promo guitars. There will be a free gift for the first 10 sign-ups. Gain will have their Summer Concert at 6:30, July 13. We are working on the location. Our Musical Ladder Awards continue to show the excellent progress of our students. I’m so excited about the enthusiasm it has created for practice and achievement. One of our students in the studio had a fire in their home the week of the 21st. They have had to relocate while their home is repaired. They will be out of their home for several weeks. Their insurance company has found another home for them to use while the repairs are made. We would like to present them with an expression of our concern and support. If you would like to contribute to the gift, please bring your money to Swicegood Music. This gift will help them restock what they have lost. Please send your donations by June 15. I will report to the studio the amount donated. Thank you for your encouragement. LAKE CHARLES, LA 70601 (337) 477-2704 | swicegoodmusiclc.com Teacher of the Month Teacher—Tyler Reed Congratulations to Tyler! He graduated from McNeese State University with a Bachelor’s in Music Performance—Guitar! What is the thing you like most about teaching? I love the sense of accomplishment my students have when they finally get something they have been struggling with. There is nothing quite like seeing a student's face light up after a week of hard work and practice when they nail something perfectly. How do you inspire students to practice more? When learning a certain concept, I find a song that my students like, and incorporate whatever I am teaching into the piece. What part do you feel that the recital experience plays in a student’s development? Playing for a recital is a way to build confidence, it helps them get over that hurdle of being nervous in front of a crowd while still having the support of their friends and family. What is your favorite type of music and who are your favorite musical artists? My tastes vary depending on the mood and the day. One of my favorite things is discovering new bands and artists. As far as my favorite musical artists, if I had to narrow it down to just one it would probably be a toss up between George Benson and Maynard from Tool and A Perfect Circle. Tell us about what you are working on now. Currently I am working on writing, recording, and producing a concept album of my own original music. It has been a long process, but I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm also making a fretless guitar in my free time so I can make some weird polychromatic noises. Do you have any hobbies? I've been building and modifying guitars since high school, and I'm always trying to think of new things I can do to them. I've recently enjoyed woodworking, and eventually want to build an entire guitar out of one huge block of wood. Do you have performances individually or as a group coming up? This summer I'll be playing with a jazz band called "The Sharp 9's" so keep an eye and an ear perked. If you could give a quick tip for playing guitar, what would it be? There will be ups ("I'm making so much progress! At this rate I'll be Yngwie Malmsteen in no time") and downs ("I feel like I haven't progressed in so long. I'm practicing so much, but it doesn't feel like I'm getting anywhere"). The best advice I can give is to just keep going, and don't give it up. It takes time to build your own musical style. A LOT of time. Playing music can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life, don't let a plateau or slowed progress keep you from experiencing it. Vega T. Gage H. Abigail N. 2 308 E. PRIEN LAKE RD. LAKE CHARLES, LA 70601 | (337) 477-2704 | swicegoodmusiclc.com Student of the Month Student—Anthony V. After hard work in his lessons, Anthony has made the high school drum line at his school. We are so proud and him and celebrate with him in his success! What instrument do you play and how long have you taken lessons? I play the marching snare. I’ve played the drums for the last four years, and have taken lessons with Trey for about a year. Who are your favorite musical artists? My favorite artists are Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Big Daddy Weave. What are your other hobbies, besides music? I like to hunt. I belong to the Civil Air Patrol, and I like to ride my four wheeler. What are your favorite foods? My favorite foods are gumbo, red beans and rice, and fried chicken. Do you have a pet? Yes, we have three cats and three dogs. What is the coolest thing you’ve learned in the past 3 months? The coolest thing I’ve learned is paradiddle-diddle. Do you perform at family gatherings? No, but I have three brothers, so we’ve been thinking about forming a jazz band! Do you have performances individually or as a group coming up? No, but I’m interested in helping our church band. If you could give a quick tip for students taking lessons, what would it be? Practice, Practice, Practice! I didn’t want to, but it’s the only way to get faster! The drum circle offers equality because there is no head or tail. It includes people of all ages. The main objective is to share rhythm and get in tune with each other and themselves—To form a group consciousness. To entrain and resonate. By entrainment, I mean that a new voice, a collective voice, emerges from the group as they drum together.” —Mickey Hart, Drummer—Grateful Dead from his testimony before the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging, 1991. 308 E. LAKE CHARLES, LA 70601 | (337) 477-2704 | swicegoodmusiclc.com Each Spring I often get asked these questions: Q. How do lessons work in the summer? A. The Right Note Studio is open year round, and we do not close during the summer. Q. Do a lot of students quit during the summer? A. For the past 3 years, we have grown in enrollment each summer. Some students withdraw but we increase the enrollment of students in the summer and many continue into the Fall. We enrolled 12 students last summer. With the current recession, the number of students traveling in the summer and withdrawing for vacations has hit record lows. Q. How full is the Right Note Studio? A. As of today we are at 60% capacity, and several teachers are sold out between 4:15 - 6:30p.m. Q. If we withdraw for the summer, can we keep our spot for Fall? A. Lessons are on a first come first serve basis. So, if you withdraw for the summer, we cannot guarantee that we will have a spot for you in the Fall as we will open the spot to new students. The big question for all parents and students to consider is: Do you want to stay with the same teacher in the Fall? If the answer is YES there are 2 ways to do this: 1. Take advantage of our group make up lessons We realize that some of you will go on vacation for a portion of the summer. By signing up for the group make ups, you can make up 4 of your lessons and keep the same teacher and spot for Fall. It is very easy to do: Check off the dates that you want to come for your make ups on the online form at swicegoodmusiclc.com/gml. If you don’t know the dates, you can schedule them anytime during the summer. GET A HEAD START! 2. Sub lease your spot to a family or friend You can send a family member or friend in your place for the dates you will miss. Just let the Studio know who is coming in your place and when. Make sure that they reimburse you directly for the lessons. If you are taking summer lessons and need a specific time for Fall, please contact me around late July and I will do my best to accommodate you. Each September, I get calls from students who have been with us for years, but withdrew for the summer. They want to return to the same teacher, day and time, but the spot has been filled by another student. If you LOVE your teacher, keep your spot by using the summer make ups or sub lease your spot. If you have any questions, please call me direct at (337) 477-2704 or (337) 263-1875 Thanks! Suzanne Kelley 308 E. PRIEN LAKE RD.
