Note: All strips are cut across the width of the fabric
(perpendicular to selvages) unless noted otherwise.
D. 24158-J: Scissors – Black
• Cut one 4 ½” x WOF strip. Sub-cut the strip into six 4 ½” squares.
WOF = Width of fabric from selvage to selvage.
E. 24163-E: Tonal – Cream
• Cut four 3 ½” x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into seventy-two 2” x 3 ½” strips.
• Cut eight 2” x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into (144) 2” squares.
• Cut one 6 ½” x WOF strip. Sub-cut the strip into twelve
1 ½” x 6 ½” strips and twelve 1 ½” x 4 ½” strips.
• Cut three 1 ½” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together, end to end with diagonal seams, and cut two 1 ½” x 48 ½”
strips.
• Cut two 1 ½” x 38 ½” WOF strips.
A. 24154-E: Sewing Blocks – Multi
• Fussy cut six 9 ½” squares.
B. 24164-J: Buttons – Black/Cream
• Cut two 9 ½” x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into twenty-four 2 ½” x 9 ½” strips.
• Cut five 2 ½” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together, end to end with diagonal seams, and cut two 2 ½” x 50 ½” strips and two 2 ½” x 42 ½” strips.
C. 24163-C: Tonal – Pink
• Cut two 2 ½” x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into twenty-four 2 ½” squares.

• Cut two 2” x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into
twenty-four 2” squares.
• Cut four 2” x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into
twenty-four 2” x 6 ½” strips.
Block Assembly:
1. Sew one 2 ½” x 9 ½” Fabric B strip to each side of one
9 ½” Fabric A square. Sew one 2 ½” Fabric C square
to each end of one 2 ½” x 9 ½” Fabric B strip. Repeat
to make a second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to
the bottom of the Fabric A square. Trim the resulting
block to 12 ½” square to make one Block One (Fig. 1).
Repeat to make six Block Ones total.

2. Place one 2” Fabric H square on the top left corner of
one 3 ½” Fabric G square, right sides together (Fig. 2).
Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the
upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 2). Flip
open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 3). Trim away
the excess fabric from behind the triangle ¼” away
from the sewn seam.
K. 24160-J: Tonal Sewing – Black
• Cut two 6 ½” x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into
thirty-six 2” x 6 ½” strips.
• Cut seven 2 ½” x WOF strips for the binding.
Backing 24160-E: Tonal Sewing – Cream
• Cut two 62” x WOF strips. Sew together and trim to make one 62” x 74” back.

5. Sew one 2” x 6 ½” Fabric G strip and
one 2” x 6 ½” Fabric F strip together
lengthwise to make one FG strip (Fig. 6).
Repeat to make twenty-four FG strips
total.
6. Sew one 1 ½” x 4 ½” Fabric E strip to
each side of one 4 ½” Fabric D square.
Sew one 1 ½” x 6 ½” Fabric E strip to
the top and to the bottom of the Fabric D
square to make one D-block (Fig. 7).
Repeat to make six D-blocks total.

14. Sew one 2” x 3 ½” to each side of

one EHE unit (Fig. 16). Repeat to
make eighteen EHE units total.

8. Place one 2” Fabric E square on the left side of one
2” x 6 ½” Fabric I strip, right sides together (Fig. 9).
Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper

15. Sew one EKE unit to the top and to the bottom of the
one EHE unit to make one Blue Spool (Fig. 17). Repeat
to make eighteen Blue Spools total.

Quilt Assembly:
(Refer to the Quilt Layout while assembling the quilt top.)
Finishing:
23. Layer and quilt as desired.
16. Sew one Block One to each side of one Block Two to
make Row One. Repeat to make Row Three.
24. Sew the seven 2 ½ x WOF Fabric K strips together, end
to end with 45° seams, to make the binding. Fold this
long strip in half, lengthwise with wrong sides together,
and press.
17. Sew one Block Two to each side of one Block One to
make Row Two. Repeat to make Row Four.
25. Bind as desired.
18. Sew the four rows together, in numerical order to make
the quilt top.
19. Sew one 1 ½” x 48 ½” Fabric E strip to each side of the
quilt top. Sew one 1 ½” x 38 ½” Fabric E strip to the
top and to the bottom of the quilt top.

20. Sew one 2 ½” x 50 ½” Fabric B strip to each side of the
quilt top. Sew one 2 ½” x 42 ½” Fabric B strip to the
top and to the bottom of the quilt top.
21. Sew five Blue Spools and four Pink Spools together,
alternating them, to make one strip. Repeat to make a
second strip. (Note: Pay attention to the orientation of
the spools.) Sew one strip to each side of the quilt top.
22. Sew five Pink Spools and four Blue Spools together,
alternating them, to make one strip. Repeat to make a
second strip. Sew the strips to the top and to the bottom
of the quilt top. (Note: Pay attention to the orientation
of the spools.)
