It is named after Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early seventeenth century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, as well as celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services, and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption. Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world; especially in Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. UPCOMING MEETINGS Zone Student Speakers Contest, Tuesday, March 4th – 7:00pm Regular Meeting, Wednesday, March 5, 7:00pm Regular Meeting, Wednesday, March 19, 7:00pm EDITOR’S CORNER ~ FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS “Valentine’s Day History” Jennifer Bates – Feb. 3rd Elena Perez – Feb. 21st Ruben Alba – Feb. 26th The history of Valentine’s Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends. The holiday’s roots are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15. Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian Feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be St. Valentine’s Day. NEWS FLASH: We have a Celebrity in our Club – Lion Gosia was interviewed and is published in the District News Letter the “Good News’”. HUMOR OF THE MONTH School Trouble A student in a college philosophy course was having trouble making heads or tails out of a reading assignment the teacher had given him. So, he went to the professor after classes and asked for help. “Would you mind if we walked while we talked? I'd like to stroll down to the zoo.” the professor asked. “Sure” said the student. He picked up the book and left with the professor. The two walked down to the zoo, having a deep discussion about the contents of the reading assignment. When they got to the lion enclosure, the professor asked, “Can I see your book?” “Sure” the student said, and he handed the professor the book. The professor took the book, and tossed it into the lion enclosure, where it promptly landed between two of the great cats. “So there”, the professor said, “If you want to get the most out of that text, you have to learn to read between the lions.” THE REGULAR MEETINGS ARE 1st & 3rd WEDNESDAY AT 7:00 PM SHARP AT HOBEE’S RESTAURANT, 800 AHWANEE AVE., SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA.
