Mariel Hemingway`s Simple Tips for Living a Healthy Life
Mariel Hemingway’s Simple
HOME
“Gardening is an art, great exercise, productive, and a
refuge … time spent gardening can be therapeutic,
meditative, restorative, and grants a singular sense of
immediate achievement as you weed, hoe, plant, and
harvest. If you’re trying to cultivate a more intentional,
peaceful, and enriching life, cultivating a plant (or two, or
ten) may be just the key to unlock some quiet time to
appreciate beauty … both in the garden and in yourself.”
Tips for Living a Healthy Life
FOOD
“Sustainability starts with
the most essential part of
life, eating. I created an
earth-friendly kitchen by
challenging myself to
make one small change
per week to my regular
routine.”
EXERCISE
SILENCE
“There is a reason people try to make exercise
about the purely physical — exercise breaks down
barriers, and releases emotions, and that can be
pretty damn scary sometimes. If you’ve ever been
to a kundalini yoga class, you’ve probably seen
people in tears by the end. Real exercise — exercise with intention — blows out all the baloney, and
forces you to feel the emotions and thoughts you’ve
repressed behind “to-do” lists, work assignments,
and plans for the weekend.”
hough beautiful, fit, and healthy, Mariel Hemingway is not
your run-of-the-mill celebrity.
For starters, she’s Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter. She
grew up far from Hollywood, calling Ketchum, Idaho home. She
was in her first film at only 13. And then, there’s the Oscar: Hemingway won one of the statuettes — for her role as Tracy in
Woody Allen’s Manhattan — before her 18th birthday. To top it
off, she champions a lifestyle one doesn’t associate with the realm
of celebrity: Hemingway has become a voice of holistic balance,
health and wellbeing within the alternative community.
With an overarching goal to help others be the best they can
be, Hemingway tackles a myriad of topics, from gardening to
interiors and healthy diet to meditation.
Starting with Finding My Balance, a personal memoir about a
life’s journey honed by yoga and meditation, Hemingway has
published three books that promote a top-to-bottom healthy
lifestyle. In 2007, in Healthy Living from the Inside Out, Hemingway provided a how-to guide for finding and enhancing personal
balance and health through self empowerment. Eventually, her
focus expanded to include diet, and her most recent publication
— Mariel’s Kitchen: Simple Ingredients for a Delicious and Satisfying
Life — provides ways to easily and deliciously “turn your kitchen
into the heart of your home.” The publication was also marked
with the launch of a company that produces food products that
care for the health of the body, mind and spirit. As if that’s not
enough, Hemingway also supports her vision and passion for
WP: Was there a turning point when you consciously
made a change?
MH: My knowledge grew over time, mostly by trying
different healing modalities and ways to eat. I found that
the answer to my best health and happiness lies within
me.
WP: How did you educate yourself on a healthier
lifestyle?
MH: I studied health my whole life — the way to eat,
ecology, the environment — all of it plays a part of your
lifestyle.
WP: What made you decide to “go public” with your
discoveries, write about them, and ultimately create a
community centered around them?
MH: When my ex-husband got cancer and then
recovered, we healed him through my beliefs in food,
meditation and home environment. I had a thought —
I realized I needed to share my passion for living well.
personal growth and the Body Mind Spirit movement with an
online community that provides secret tips and seasonal recipes,
recommends books and websites, and offers teleclasses and personal
coaches — all geared towards helping people become the best
version of themselves.
WP: What are the basic components of your healthy
living?
MH: Home, food, exercise and silence are the cornerstones. Bobby [Mariel’s partner] and I are learning the
deeper meaning of the connections between nature,
breath, thought, water and food. We are launching a
company called The Willingway — Bobby has the will, I
have the way. It’s about the male-female perspective on a
healthy lifestyle through good adventure, nature and
healing. We have both studied our whole life and want
to share our experiences in hopes of inspiring others to be
the healthiest, happiest and most vital person they can
be. It is about being authentic and turning on your own
personal intentions to be who you are meant to be.
Learning what is good for you, from the inside out, and
slowing down to relish the basic elements life has to offer
can lead to a healthier, more fulfilling and enjoyable life.
Soup-to-nuts healthy living can oftentimes be overwhelming,
especially for someone that lives an active, busy lifestyle and doesn’t
have time to focus on the details. But if anyone’s an expert on
making the time, space and energy for a shift towards a wholesome
body, mind and spirit, it’s the ever-busy Hemingway. Luckily for all
of us, she shares the journey behind her success and some simple
tips anyone can implement with The Whole Person Calendar —
somehow, healthy living suddenly seems easy.
WP: What are your personal eating habits like?
MH: I eat raw, sprouted, steamed, cooked and live food.
I am not a vegan, though I was for years. Now I eat
animal protein, but never abused animals. Both Bobby
and I make sure our food is local, not abused and,

“Wonderful things come from silence. It allows more to be
revealed: during conversation, if one person keeps quiet
rather than talking, the other person will inevitably say more.
Silence is profound and grounding. Just as exercise can allow
you to feel emotions you might otherwise repress, silence
allows your true desires, hopes and dreams to surface.”

Whole Person: Have you always lived such a healthoriented life?
Mariel Hemingway: Health and wellness have always
been a priority for me. There was a lot of illness in my

good health.

whenever possible, organic or biodynamic.
WP: What inspired you to create a
cookbook?
MH: Mariel’s Kitchen is more about eating
locally, creating a green kitchen, eating
simply and healthfully and, of course,
going gluten free when possible.
One of the most
important things
you can do
is laugh — it makes
you younger,
healthier
and happier.
WP: Diet, fitness, the home environment. Healthy living can be overwhelming. Where does one start, and
what “tips” can you share?
MH: If you want to change your food,
start with breakfast. Watch a sunrise or
sunset daily. Find an adventure you love.
Drink water out of a glass. One of the
most important things you can do is laugh
— it makes you younger, healthier and
happier.
Creating a healthier body and mind allows
us to do more and live a longer, more
vibrant and meaningful life. It is my
belief that the choices we make, the
information we seek and the food we eat
are integral to our well-being.
