We have had a number of Summer Camps that were open to all the children of our Parish. Next week, we are having our Vacation Bible Camp. I am so very grateful to all of those who have been involved and will be involved in making these Summer Camps available to our children. It is so nice to see our facilities being used all year round. I want to give a special thank you to our maintenance staff who have been working so very diligently, and working around the Summer Camps, to get all of our Parish Facilities and, in particular, our Education Center in good order. As you may realize, during the summer months we hire about eight extra people to assist us with the grounds and the Education Center. The amazing thing is when these college students (some of whom went to school or religious education here) who are now doing a lot of work, realize how much time and effort were put into getting everything ready for them for the new academic year. They are blown away! This weekend we will be having a special blessing for all of our college students. It is our way of showing them that, even though they are not physically present with us as they continue their higher education, they are still in our thoughts and in our prayers. As a parish, we need to support them in their faith. I am very grateful for all those who have returned their raffle tickets for our Parish Drawings. This is the one fundraiser that the parish sponsors. I certainly encourage everyone who is able to buy and/or sell tickets, to please do so. It is your opportunity to go to all those people who constantly ask you to buy tickets to support a worthy cause to do the same. I am always very grateful for your participation. In the near future we will be having a blessing for cars. We intend to do this over a weekend (24th Anniversary) Req. by her Mother and Father TUE, Aug. 11 Saint Clare 9:00 AM Dora Castle Req. by Vincent Donnelly WED, Aug. 12 Saint Jane Frances de Chantal 9:00 AM William Hartz Req. by the Diesel Family THU, Aug. 13 Saints Pontian and Hippolytus 9:00 AM Jerry Routt Req. by the Routt Family FRI, Aug. 14 Saint Maximilian Kolbe 9:00 AM Lynn McQuade Req. by Alex Piermani, II SAT, Aug. 15 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary 9:00 AM For all living & deceased members of the St. Theresa Guild Msgr. We are also planning to have the blessing of animals in front of the St. Francis Garden, and we will also be having the blessing for new drivers. The dates for these blessings will be given in the near future. As the remaining days of summer are coming to an end, please take the time to "smell the roses". Enjoy God's creation! The sole exception is for the Eucharistic Liturgy on Good Friday and on Holy Saturday before the Easter Vigil, when it is not celebrated. SUNDAY, August 9 Parish Picnic Sign Up: After All Masses - Narthax MONDAY, August 10 CYO Volleyball: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM - Social and Recreation Center Vacation Bible School: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM - Education Center TUESDAY, August 11 Vacation Bible School: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM - Education Center The Liturgy of the Hours consecrates to God the whole course of day and night. Lauds and Vespers (morning and evening prayer) are the principal hours. To these are added one or three intermediate prayer periods (traditionally called Terce, Sext and None), another prayer period to end the day (Compline), and a special prayer period called the Office of Readings (formerly known as Matins) at no fixed time, devoted chiefly to readings from the Scriptures and ecclesiastical writers. The Second Vatican Council suppressed an additional 'hour' called Prime. The prayers of the Liturgy of the Hours consist principally of the Psalter or Book of Psalms. Like the Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours has inspired great musical compositions. An earlier name for the Liturgy of the Hours and for the books that contained the texts was the Divine Office (a name still used as the title of one English translation), the Book of Hours, and the Roman Breviary. This summer the following improvements were made though the kindness of Msgr. Nicolo: Saint Helena Parish Religious Education’s main goal is to help our children know how much God loves them, and to help them to develop a strong personal relationship with Jesus. Here at Saint Helena we try to do this by: • New hallway flooring in the K – 3rd Grade Wing - involving the removal of asbestos • Two new copy machines for Teacher and Office Use • Two new cherry teacher desks • Five new cherry bookcases for classroom use • New classroom desks and chairs for 4C • Re- painting of classrooms and hallways • New flooring by the elevator and a corrective expansion joint in the main hallway Teaching about Jesus and about God’s relationship with us through the study of the Scriptures. Teaching the children about prayer, and helping them learn how to pray. Teaching the children about the Church and the Sacraments. Helping the children to grow in faith and to celebrate their faith through life experience day by day. • New Computer Server • Software licenses for all the new computers Clearly, we are all incredibly grateful to Msgr. Nicolo for his continued generosity. The Home and School Association is a tremendous gift to Saint Helena School – as you know they provide activities during the school year where we gather in Faith, in Friendship and in Fun! These events provide revenue for school use – last year, twenty new laptops arrived for the children to use – word has it that yet another surprise may be arriving before the start of school! Yeah! I’ll keep you posted on all of the happenings! Wow, are we blessed!! Have a great week! Madeleine Reaccreditation is a tremendous amount of work, however, knowing our children will be the direct recipients of all that is gleaned through this project, these efforts are incredibly valuable to our school faculty. On Monday, October 26, 2015, our teachers will provide a colloquium to other area educators, sharing all the strengths gained from these endeavors. Our children will be involved in a variety of events during this process. We’ll keep you posted on all of the events of this process. This year we joyfully await our third Middle States Reaccreditation. During the 2014 – 2015 our teachers implemented the findings of their summer research of the writing process into their classes. They also prepared professional presentations of their research and shared them at our Monthly Faculty Meetings. These presentations were also videotaped. Our Middle States event will open with a Liturgy at 5:00 PM of October 25, 2015. All will be invited to attend, please, mark that date!! Have a wonderful week! With love and God’s blessings, Sister Cathe 6 August 9, 2015 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time Check Out Our Campers! St. Helena American Girl campers learned the art of quilting this summer! We ask that you please keep them in your prayers: Choosing Life Monthly Theme—August 2015 God made us for a reason. His love is our life mission. This mission enables us to find our true identity. If we choose to embrace this mission, we will have a new perspective on many issues, not just the family. To live the mission of the domestic church means that Catholic families will sometimes live as minorities, with different values than their surrounding culture. Our mission of love will require courage and fortitude. Jesus is calling, and we can respond, choosing lives of faith, hope, charity, joy, service, and mission. To prepare for the World Meeting of Families and Pope Francis’s visit, we are studying a catechesis on family life called Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive. Chapter 10: Choosing Life We began this catechesis by explaining that God made us for a reason. The God we meet in Jesus Christ loves us, and calls us to love as He does. Marriage is the sacrament that brings human fertility into this mission of love. If we understand that love is our mission in our marriages, families, and parishes, then we have learned a basic truth that will shape many other areas of life. For example, if fidelity to the covenant requires restraint and perseverance, if our bodies and the material world can be vessels of divine grace, then we can approach questions of sexuality, ecology, technology, and medicine with renewed commitment and insight. We now realize why a catechesis on the family has actually been a catechesis for all of life. If we have learned to think of our families as domestic churches, if we have learned why moral individualism is not the right context for receiving Catholic teaching, then we have adopted a view that will reorient our whole identity. This mission is not reserved for the few or for the extraordinary. Nor does it mean that families somehow have to stop being themselves or seek after some impossible perfection in order to witness to the Gospel. It may mean that we are sometimes minorities in a secular culture that sees life differently. But the Church has wide experience of many different cultural contexts, offering wisdom and advice about spiritual practices to sustain us. Please see the catechism for more details. Love is our origin and destiny, which is why only the way of love can truly satisfy, and that is why Love is Our Mission. Christopher C. SAINT OF THE WEEK - St. Clare Clare was a beautiful Italian noblewoman who found an order of nuns now called "Poor Clares." When she heard St. Francis of Assisi preach, she really wanted to imitate him and to live a poor humble life for Jesus. So one evening, she ran away from home, and in a little chapel outside Assisi, gave herself to God. St. Francis cut off her hair and gave her a rough brown habit to wear, tied with a plain cord around her waist. Her parents tried in every way to make her return home, but Clare would not. Soon her sister, St. Agnes joined her, as well as other young women who wanted to be brides of Jesus, and live without any money. St. Clare and her sisters wore no shoes, ate no meat, lived in a poor house, and kept silent most of the time. Yet they were very happy, because Our Lord was close to them all the time. St. Clare’s feast day is August 11. 11 August 9, 2015 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time STEWARDSHIP OF TIME & TALENT MINISTRY / ORGANIZATION CONTACT PERSON Adoration Art & Environment Basketball: Adult & Young Adult Bereavement Ministry Catering/Empress Room Chapel Reposers Collection Counters Agnes Ferrara Theresa Smith Mike O’Brien Michele Gerstemeier Joe Paravati Jack Greenleaf Denise Janick Karen Wurtenberg Communion and Liberation Rebecca Cherico Community of Disciples Jo-Ann Belanger Cross Talk Dorothy Barry Discovering Christ Kurt Zampier Divine Mercy Chaplet Barbara Souders Divorce Healing Program Gina Malony Ecumenical Activities Coordinators Tim & MaryAnne Seiders Evangelization Ministry Jo-Ann Belanger Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Msgr.
