On
Monday
September
28,
2009 many of
the Yantis High
School students
and
faculty
participated
in
saving
others’
lives by donating
blood to the
Carter Blood Care
Center. This year,
several students
donated for the
first time. When
asked about her
first experience in
donating blood,
Kaylee Milbauer
said, “I didn’t
think the process
was
painful.
It was a little
uncomfortable
because
the
needle had to
be adjusted, but
other than that
it was a piece
of cake. People
make it out to be
much worse than
it really is. “When
thinking
about
donating blood
it is important
to evaluate the
process you will
go through. In
order to donate
blood to the
Carter Blood Care
Center you must
weigh at least 110
pounds or more
and be in good
health. You must
register yourself
which requires an
I. D. such as your
driver’s license or
field, but that
has been taken
care of and the
grass is slowly
beginning to
grow back. Also,
the field is much
larger than the
one played on
in the past; I
was told that the
corners were
about 310’ and
in center about
330’ (blame

giving. They also
suggest drinking
lots of water or
juice before and
after
donating.
If participants in
the blood drive
have not eaten
anything
that
morning,
the
Carter
Blood
Care
Center
provided snacks
and drinks. After
this process, they
sit you down and
change out the
previous
tubes
used. They will
give you a stress
ball to squeeze
in your hand and
then they will
sterilize
your
point of entry.
They will then
put a tourniquet
around your arm
and your vein
will jut out. Then
they will take the
needle and slide it in. Then your
blood will start
pumping out of
you. Participants
were able to
donate one to two
pints of blood.
Overall
this
year’s blood drive
was a successful
event. Students
were grateful for
the opportunity
they had to help
others. “I felt
humbled to give
a donation that
could
possibly
make a difference
in
another
person’s
life,”
Traci Glenn said.
The school will
host
another
Carter Blood Care
Center
Blood
Drive in the
spring. Students
who meet the
requirements for
blood donations
are encouraged to
participate so that
the spring event
will be another
success!

The FFA is the largest student led organization in the nation. It is a
youth organization within agricultural education that changes lives and
prepares students for premier leadership, personal growth and career
success. The FFA was created in 1928 as the Future Farmers of America; the name was changed in 1988 to The National FFA Organization to
represent the growing diversity of agriculture.
The Yantis FFA received its charter into what was then called the Future Farmers of America
on November 29, 1949.
2009 marks the 60th
birthday for the Yantis
FFA chapter.
Some of the benefits of
membership include,
but are not limited to:
Animal projects, Leadership Development Events
examples include: Quiz,
Radio, Skills, Public
Relations, Creed and public speaking contests, and job interview. Career
Development Events - examples include: Poultry Judging, Livestock
Judging, Floriculture, Nursery/Landscape, Ag Mechanics, Horse Evaluation, Farm Business Management team, Dairy Cattle Judging, Wildlife/
Forestry. There are scholarships opportunities, chapter meetings, community service projects, and much more. Being a member of the FFA
allows you the opportunity to develop leadership and personal skills that
you will use the rest of your life.

The Math & Science Club is committed to establishing long lasting
bonds in the community through mathematics and science; while promoting a more developed understanding of our own subject matter.
This year, the YMSC will be involved in community service such as
planting trees around the town or tutoring underclassmen in the afternoons after school. Each member will also compete in TMSCA math
and science competitions. The Math & Science Club will also be selling
Yantis spirit “Blue Out” t-shirts. The cost is $15. Sizes range from youth
small to XXXL.
FCCLA
Academic UIL
The University Interscholastic League was created by The University
of Texas at Austin to provide leadership and guidance to public school
teachers. Since 1909, the UIL has grown into the largest inter-school
organization of its kind in the world.
The voluntary-membership, non-profit organization exists to provide
educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests.

The purpose of the Spanish Club is to promote Spanish culture, use of
the Spanish language, and fellowship among club members. Members
are currently selling tickets to win a piñata at the fall festival.
The FCCLA officers and fellow members attended a workshop in Lindale. The workshop mainly discussed the dangers of teen driving in a
program called “Teens in the Driver Seat”. Look for upcoming activities
during Red Ribbon week (Oct. 26-30). The FCCLA also attended the
State Fair on Oct. 6.
BETA
The 2009-10 YHS Beta Club will hold their first
meeting on November 5. New members will be
required to have a GPA of 3.25 or better. Mrs.
Straznicky is the club sponsor.
The purpose of the Beta Club is to recognize and honor high academic
achievement, prepare kids for life and empowering them to be successful,
and to develop the leaders of tomorrow.

2009 YHS Girls’ Volleyball
This season’s Lady Owl Varsity Volleyball team included seniors Traci
Glenn, Blanca Reyna, Crystal Batista, Cristina Rodriguez, Shelby Allen,
Gloria Rivera, Beatriz Gonzales, and Rachel Walka, junior Ronni Vargas
and freshmen Maria Garcia and Taelor Rawson. The Lady Owls had a
rough start, suffering from a few losses early in the season, but in the
end achieved a district record of 5-7. Although they lost their last few
games and did not make the cut for the playoffs, the Lady Owls want
to thank everyone who came out and showed their support!

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS

YMS Volleyball
The Yantis Middle School girl’s volleyball players practiced hard for
their games. Their first game was played against Fruitvale resulting
in a loss. The second game was a lucky win against Phoenix. Unfortunately, the next two games were both losses. Even though the girls
did not had many wins, they enjoyed playing with their teammates and
learning from their coach. The girls will continue to work together and
practice hard to improve for next season.

YMS Baseball
The Middle School baseball team had a very wet season this year,
but through it all it was a success. It was a season where we grew
and matured as a team even though 3 out of 7 games were rained
out, we turned it into a successful season. We had several obstacles to overcome but it was something that we can build for next
year.

ONE ACT PLAY
The 7th grade class has been researching Texas weather. They were recently studying natural
disasters and were on the topic of tornadoes for about two weeks. On the last week they did a
tornado experiment. Each student had there own jar. Then, Mrs. McKinney, the Social Studies
teacher put little debris into the jar with vinegar and water. Each student then picked up their jar
and spun them into a rotation for about four minutes, when they quit spinning the funnel cloud The Middle school One Act play cast and crew has been decided. The play they are performing is
was moving in rotation with the debris flying around inside it. This experiment was a great called “Louder I Can’t Hear You.” Many students tried out for parts in the play. The One Act Play
model of an actual tornado.
- Kaylan Bounds event is going to be held on November 18 at Quitman High School. Mrs. Rhea has been drilling the
cast with tips on how to perform their parts. The students are already looking forwards to taking the

On October 7th the
Yantis Volunteer
Fire Department
held a Fire Safety
Day for grades Pre
K- 6th. This was
the eighth year
the department
has enlighted the
young people of
Yantis ISD. With
demonstrations,
handouts, and
slideshows the
firemen of YVFD
demonstrated their
passion for our school
and community. Six
members of the Fire
Department, armed
with a fire truck
and rescue vehicle,
demonstrated fire
is not a joke. There
were very important
lectures about what
to do in case of
a fire. They also
demonstrated some of
the unique equipment
the department uses,
including the Jaws
of Life. Among the
members present
was Fire Chief
Wesley Crist. Chief
Wesley was very

enthused about how
the day went. He
said, “The Yantis Fire
Department is here
to serve, if we are
ever needed just call.
We’ve been here since
1964.”The Yantis
Fire Department also
wants to add, they
are looking now for
new junior members.

a member. Junior
membership is the
perfect opportunity if
someone is interested
in any civil career.
