Dear Lynndale Community,
Greetings, and welcome to March. There’s a lot going on this month, but first...
…thank you for the valuable gift of time you provided our teachers last Friday, February 18th.
During our professional development morning, teachers worked with District English
Language Learner Coordinator Margaret Ho to explore some of the issues involved in helping
our ELL students learn vocabulary in the general education classroom. We discussed various
strategies, then applied them to our Benchmark literacy materials. As we worked in gradelevel teams to develop short lessons using these practices, we came to understand more
deeply how complex the acquisition of language really is, and how much it helps all students
to learn it in context, and to have many chances to use these new words. Our discussion will
help all students, not just those new to English, acquire language better.
We also benefited from a presentation from intermediate teacher Mr. Slettvet regarding the
use of the Fundamental Counting Principal in mathematics, which is a grade level expectation
from fourth grade onward. Mr. S’s presentation used both math and poetry, and provided us
all with much food for thought.
Just before Winter Break, we learned that Lynndale, along with Lynnwood, Spruce, College
Place and Cedar Valley Elementaries, was awarded a $55,000 grant from the Discuren
Foundation to foster a stronger link between the five schools and our parent communities.
We had two immediate goals. The first was to hire a Community Outreach Coordinator to
assist in the establishment of Natural Leader Programs at Lynndale, which encourages parent
leadership, especially in our non-English speaking communities. The second goal was to hold
at least two Family Academic Nights at each school over the 2010-2011 year. Such events
will not only deepen the parental connection to school, but also serve to increase adult
understanding of our math, literacy and science curricula, and—perhaps as important—
emphasize the importance of early planning for rigorous and accelerated academic programs
for our underserved populations. (please see “Mr. Z’s Message…” continued on page 2)

Hey, it‟s me, Megan Roberts. Last
month I wrote my first monthly
column, and I hope you enjoyed it.
First, I would like to tell you about the
upcoming spirit days. The next spirit
day is Crazy Hair Day. Crazy Hair Day
is on March 31st. Crazy hair day is all
about being weird, wacky, and wild.
You might consider spraying colored
hair spray into your hair, spike your
hair up, do funky ponytails, or even
wear a wig.
The second closest spirit day is Sports
Day. Sports day is on April 22nd. This
spirit day is new. You should wear
clothes that have to do with your
favorite sport. For example, my
favorite sport is soccer, because I play
soccer and love to watch soccer, so I
would wear clothes that have to do
with soccer.
The third closest spirit day is Favorite
Color Day. Favorite color day is on May
20th. I actually came up with this spirit
day. If your favorite color is green (like
mine) then you would wear green
clothes and green clothes only.
Val-o-grams were AWESOME. If you
missed buying one this year, don‟t
worry, we will be selling them next
year. Make sure you stop by the
student store, open on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 am
to 7:55 am. Our prices range from 25
cents to 1 dollar. ASB has made lots of
money with it so far. „Til next month!
Bella Yohannes gleefully anticipates
enjoying her Art Day Cooking Class project.
We have already fulfilled our first goal with the hiring of Outreach
Coordinator Mrs. Emma Rodriguez, who brings to our schools a rich
background as a Natural Leader at College Place Elementary. She welcomes
our Spanish-speaking parents on Wednesday night, March 2, at 6:00 for
dinner and introductions. Please give Mrs. Rodriguez a warm Lynndale
welcome when you see her.
In other news, Thursday, February 17 brought Art Day to Lynndale. Packed
with cool presentations by school and community artists (including 15
Meadowdale High School seniors) and a Taiko Drumming Assembly, the day
was a fun and valuable experience for the students. Special thanks go out to
Art Day Coordinators Ms. Sateren, Ms. Musselman, Mrs. Kratz and Mrs.
Skinner for the time and dedication they invested; to our room parents,
community members, and all the generous people who volunteered their time
in the morning; and to PTA for hosting a fabulous lunch for presenters and
volunteers.
School on Thursday, March 17th will be dismissed at 11:00 in order to
provide time for Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you would like
further information regarding your student’s progress since report cards came
out three weeks ago, this would be an ideal time to schedule a meeting with
your child’s teacher. If you prefer assistance scheduling an appointment,
please call—my number is (425) 431-7364.
A new after-school term will begin the week of March 14th, and continue
through April 27th, the week before students begin taking the Measure of
Student Progress tests in grades three through six. Look for more details
about class offerings in the weekly e-mail update from Mrs. Kratz, or call us

All-Lions Skating
Set for March 14
You‟re invited to join the fun on
Monday, March 14, as PTA hosts an
All-School Skating Party from 6pm to
8pm at Lynnwood Bowl and Skate.
Skate rental is $6, or $8 for in-lines.
Lynnwood Bowl and Skate is a public
facility, and all students must be
accompanied by an adult chaperone.
No drop-offs, please! Come and skate
away for a night of family fun!

the February
PTA Meeting…
…here‟s your update! Thanks to Rachel
Broderhausen for keeping us posted!
Father Daughter Dance was
February 11, and was a great
success! Jennifer Both reported the
dance made about $300 profit from
initial review. We had about 130 dads
and girls attending. Papa John‟s
donated pizza, Yuen Lui did photos,
and everyone had a great time.
WatchDOGS is still looking for new
and repeat volunteers. We sent home
a signup flyer via email and kidmail.
Charles DeBell has contacted previous
WatchDOGS to encourage them to
sign up for another day, with good
results so far. We may schedule a
spring “Dessert with Dads” event if we
think we need more outreach.

logo and letterhead, and Beth Zollars
passed around a sample of the new
design. It looks great, and will be
beautiful on the new PTA brochure
that Christy Pack designed. Thanks

LYNNWOOD ELKS BELIEVE IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD!
Proving that Lynndale‟s “village” of friends, neighbors and benefactors is second to
none, Lynnwood Elks Club members pose with Mr. Z after presenting a check for
$1000 to support Lynndale‟s After School program. In a wonderful bit of serendipity,
the visitors were all well acquainted with Lynndale. From left to right are former
parents of six Lynndale Lions, Marian and Burton Michael, former principal Bill
Borgert, Mr. Z., and former Golden Acorn recipient, PTA activist, and current Elks
Lodge Secretary, Rosemary Magnusson. Many happy memories were shared as the
group toured After School activities and revisited the school they still hold dear.

One of Emma‟s first projects is a
dinner gathering to meet and get to
know some of Lynndale‟s Spanish
speaking families on Wednesday,
March 2. Emma will also help
coordinate the evenings designed to
increase parent understanding of the
new literacy adoptions and math and
science curricula.
Art Day was a success! Michelle
Skinner will send out some official
post-Art Day surveys to gather
feedback for next time. Kids seemed to
have a great time, luncheon was a
success. Our main question was
budget and whether the supply and
food costs were too high.
Staff Appreciation: PTA sponsored
luncheon will be Friday, May
6. Chairperson Shawna Beresford will
send out more information in the next
few weeks. We have a very small
budget for it this year, so will talk
about more free/low-cost ideas to
have kids and parents show teachers
how much we appreciate them!
Koins for Kids fundraiser going on
through Monday 2/28/11. We have a
Meadowdale HS student helping
coordinate, with help from Tiffinie
Autio. All proceeds benefit Clothes for
Kids.
With PTA Vice President Jill Jaspers
moving in March, we have an open
Board position. Beth said we can try
to fill it, or PTA can still operate with
the open position.

Emma Rodriguez
The warmest of welcomes to
Lynndale‟s newest staff member,
Emma Rodriguez! Emma is the new
Volunteer Coordinator hired through
the Discuren Grant who will focus on
engaging our Hispanic and ethnic
families in every aspect of family life at
Lynndale.
Emma was a Natural Leader at College
Place Elementary and understands
how to break down the barriers that
make it hard for families who might
not speak English or don‟t share the
same traditions to feel comfortable at
school. Emma is a resource for all of
Emma is usually at Lynndale Mondays,
Thursdays and Fridays, but also travels
to the other four schools she serves as
needed. She has already established a
warm presence in our building, and
looks forward to meeting as many
parents and families as possible.
Another of her many talents was
revealed on Art Day, when she just
happened to end up in the Learn to
Knit class, helping the kids cast the
stitches for their very first scarf!

Some unsung heroes work every month
to celebrate the Super Lions in our
jungle. Rhonda Penrod coordinates
every part of the process, collecting
names from the teachers, mailing the
invitations to parents, creating and
printing the certificates, and even
ordering the prized pencils. Tami Davis
buys and brings the ice cream, and Erin
Cain makes sure every Lion has their
spotlight moment on the front bulletin
board. It‟s a task that starts all over
again once the certificates are presented
in the gym. Thank you, Super Ladies, for
making it magical every month!

The stillness was deafening in the
Lynndale Gym as sixth grader Ryan
Houghton and fourth grader Gabriel
Bombita dueled for the First Place
trophy in the annual Spelling Bee.
Gabriel emerged the victor, but each
one of the eighteen contestants
represented their classrooms in
splendid style. Congratulations to all
for an excellent, high level contest!
The audience added special luster to
the event with their spirited and polite
support of every contestant. It was
wonderful to see how sincerely the
kids in the audience cheered every
person on the stage. Sportsmanship
and kindness were the order of the
day, and every teacher, parent and
family member can be proud!
Since the Regional Bee is only for
students 6th grade and older, Ryan
Houghton will represent Lynndale at
the next level.
Trophies were also awarded to runner

Omerovic, Kai Hartmann and Matt

I am not sure if a simple thank you could ever convey
how much I appreciate what all of the volunteers did for
Lynndale‟s Art Day. All of the materials that were donated
helped to make it an extraordinary success. It was a
wonderful day and everyone has expressed how much
they (students, staff and parents) enjoyed their
experience. Please know that I feel I owe you a huge debt
of gratitude. A special “Thank you!” goes to Michelle
Skinner and Christy Pack and all of the PTA members for
their support.

EMERGENCY PLAN REMINDER
Please be sure the office ALWAYS has current emergency contact information, including the names of adults who are authorized to
pick up your child if you are not able to do so.
Then, in case of emergency or natural disaster:
 Remain calm and know that student safety will be our priority.
 Take a moment to insure the safety of your home, office and current surroundings.
 PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL. Phone lines must remain open for us to secure emergency help as needed.
When you arrive at school:
 Bring photo identification with you, and remind anyone who is authorized to pick up your child to do the same.
 Please do not go directly to your child’s classroom.
 Follow the instructions on the sandwich boards placed at the three entrances to the school grounds. Those signs will direct
you to the designated parent-student reunification (PSR) site.
 Trained PSR team staff members will assist you with the paperwork so your student will be free to leave with you or an
adult you have designated.
 If you would like to help provide emergency assistance, please inform a member of the PSR team. They will assign you to
the area of greatest need.
