important skill of looking-ahead.
The Chapter held its first Driving Skills Clinic of 2006
Saturday, April 15. This was our first school at our new site,
Newport News/Williamsburg
International Airport.
Unlike our 2004 and
2005 clinics at
Pungo Airfield,
the airport site
is huge with
fresh smooth
concrete.
Meanwhile the third group drove the course’s skid-pad,
braking and cornering drills. During the breaks, instructors took students for rides on the course. This was quite
popular with both. I apologize to my student-rider for any
excess ‘enthusiasm’ on my part.
Contributions
from our sponsor,
Virginia International
Raceway (VIR), made it
possible to secure this great new
site. VIR is a 3.27-mile natural-terrain
road racing circuit situated on the banks
of the Dan River near Danville, Virginia.
VIR also provided us with a school banner
and lots of track freebies and posters for the
student and instructors.
The 22 students and 15
instructors showed up
early and ready to roll.
Although the morning
began dark and wet,
the chapter holds this
school, ‘rain or shine’.
Well shine it did.
After a about an hour
or so, the sun broke
out. Those who brought
sunscreen were digging
for it. The sky was clear and
bright for the rest of the day.
This was a good, large course
for us, with no walls or
other barriers nearby.
This allowed students and
instructors to drive comfortably. In fact, the club
doubled their inventory of
safety cones to accommodate the large pad the airport loaned us for the clinic.
As the students were mostly beginners, those students attended a classroom
4
The club provided lunch by on-site, which gave
students and instructors a chance to chat about the
morning’s experience. After lunch, we combined
the three drills into one course. The students and
instructors worked on ‘putting it all
together’.
Commented student Jack
Hornbeck: “On Saturday
April 15, after many years
of threatening to do it and
with some trepidation, I
finally showed up at the
Chapter’s Driving School at
NN/Williamsburg Airport. I say
“threaten” because for one thing,
I thought I knew how to handle a car
pretty well and secondly, at my stage in life, I
was not anxious to possibly have someone
half my age yelling in my ear because
I screwed up somewhere. Well, I was
very pleasantly surprised.”
“In summary, it was a great time,
but more importantly, a great
learning experience. My instructor, Peter Florance, sure knows
his stuff and it showed. The entire
clinic was well planned and executed.
Moreover, I did find out that no, I don’t
know (or did not know) how to handle a
car as well as I thought. And yes, I sure
have a bit more confidence in my
abilities now.”
Chief instructor Bob Brochu
commented: “Special thanks to
all of the instructors and helpers that help put on this event.
We could not have held the
school without their help. Wait
until next year; we have some great
ideas to make our driving schools
even more fun.”

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 16, 2006…Committed
to developing the best performing vehicles in the luxury
market, BMW with ALPINA has created a special high
performance version of BMW’s 7 Series luxury sedan.
The 2006 BMW ALPINA B7 brings together the luxury,
pioneering design, and
advanced technology
of the 7 Series Sedan
with the scintillating
performance of a
supercharged, 500hp V-8
engine.
To power the BMW
ALPINA B7, ALPINA
specially developed a
higher-performance
version of BMW’s 4.4liter, 90-degree V-8
engine and mated it to
a 6-speed automatic
transmission featuring steering wheel mounted shift
controls. The motor produces 500 horsepower at
5,500 rpm along with maximum torque of 516 lbs.-ft. at
4,250 rpm, and propels the B7 from 0-60 mph in a mere
4.8 seconds. ALPINA 21-inch wheels carry Z-rated
performance tires, while the sport-tuned suspension
includes Active Roll Stabilization. The B7 aerokit
includes a rear spoiler to improve stability, handling, and
performance at high speeds.
ALPINA was established in 1964 as an official and
approved “ennobler” of BMW automobiles. Their
tradition is to take production BMWs and make them
even more appealing to connoisseurs of automotive
finery.

VIR, Spec E30’s, Rain, Snow, Ice!!...
Let’s Go Racing!
evil bone chilling cold that only artic explorers could
By: George Perry
Every year NASA holds its integral event in Mid February
at VIR (Virginia International Raceway). This time of year
can be a spotty time for a race weekend. Since this was
the first Spec E30 race of the season and the weather
forecast was, let’s just say less than optimal, I was more
than a little apprehensive about the weekend’s chances
for fun and success.
Racing, even with friends,
is always fraught with
a certain amount of
healthy anxiety,
excitement and
risk. As drivers first
come back to the
after a long winter
hiatus, everyone’s
driving skills are
rusty. Additionally,
the cars are untested
and the potential for
the unexpected looms large.
Hustling a high performance machine
around a racecourse is a perishable skill.
Those skills, if not used, are all too easily
forgotten. During the season’s first event,
it’s not unusual to see drivers fall victim to the
occasional off-track excursion and brush against
a tire wall. Oh yea, I forgot to mention that doing it in
the snow and rain exponentially adds to the tension.
The weekend schedule called for the Competition
Licensing School, otherwise known as Comp School, on
Friday. This school was followed by a 40-minute sprint
race and 3-½ hour enduro on Saturday and Sunday
respectively. Friday was ‘picture perfect’ with track
temperatures in the mid 70’s and not a cloud in the sky.
Most of the racers driving on Friday participated in the
test-and-tune to knock the rust off and make sure our,
bimmers were up to the challenge of the long weekend.
In addition, we had two E30 drivers entered in the Comp
School, Scott Ferguson, another Porsche convert, pass
with flying colors. The other driver unfortunately gave a
slower Miata a ‘love tap’ in the famous Oak Tree corner;
officials asked the driver to come back again after
getting a little more seat time.
Saturday morning we showed up for the 7:30am drivers
meeting and the weather conditions could not have
been more different from the day before. Gone were
the warm and sunny conditions that had greeted us.
Instead, we faced an ominous heavy overcast and an
das Kummet - May • June 2006
appreciate. After the drivers meeting a very-personable
David Wallens of Grassroots Motorsports magazine
asked Dave Pallister, Carter Hunt, Carlton Goldthwaite
and I, to arrange our cars on the skid-pad for a photo
shoot. After David took many pictures of the cars…and
of us clowning around, we drove back to the paddock to
prepare for the morning warm-up session.
We gathered around our cars warming up engines
and began making last minute preparations. The Spec
E30’s fielded a very respectable 12 cars ready to race
regardless of what Mother Nature had in store.
Unfortunately, one of our racers, Vic Hall from the
Salazar racing stable noticed that his car was
missing badly. A quick inspection reviled
a broken rocker arm. In true “club racer”
spirit, Dave Pallister of DP Motorwerks (a
competing team owner) jumped in and lent
his technical expertise, making a speedy
repair to Vic’s ailing 325i. With that behind us,
we gathered our E30’s on grid for practice.
Once on track the cold temperatures
made getting heat into the tires a
futile endeavor. Thus far, we hadn’t
had any rain or snow, so at least the
track was dry. Even so, conditions
were slick; it was like driving on
black ice. Times were pathetically
slow and I started to wonder if the
weekend was going to be a wash. Then
things really got bad. The day prior, the forecasters
called for rain/snow mix to start around 10:00am. For
once, the weather guessers guessed right. The skies
opened up with what might describe as a light blizzard.
During the second practice-session both Dave Pallister
and I opted not to run our cars in the snow, hoping
that conditions would improve later in the day. That
turned out to be a big mistake. I soon learned that the
qualifying session was cancelled because of the weather
and that the practice times would determine the starting
order for the race. The grid was set and since we opted
out of the snow session, we were at the back of it; 11th
and 12th starting position for the race.
The weather continued to be a factor but luckily, by race
time the conditions improved slightly. NASA Officials
debated on whether to re-open the track. In the end,
they decided that we were there to race, so that’s what
we did. With all 12 cars on grid, we took the green. By
now, everyone was on rain tires; man, did we need them.
Testing the braking grip during the pace lap yielded
some disappointing results.

Grocery-Getter’s Galore:
2006 5er Fest
May 26-28th, 2006
If you own a pre-1989 5 series, you won’t want to miss
the 2006 5er Fest in South Bend, IN. “What the heck is in
South Bend?” you might ask? Well, the Tire Rack Center
happens to be the site of this year’s event.
5er Fest 2006 features two nights of social events, tech
sessions, the popular autocross, swap meet, hotel garage
party and test and tune at a local drag strip.
Registration can be performed on-line at
www.5erfest.net. Here, you can also find more details
about the weekend event.
How did such an event to being? When a handful of
enthusiastic BMW 5er owners decided to get together in
August of 2002, they didn’t know what they were starting.
That’s the year the first 5er Fest took place, and was held
in Ft. Worth, Texas. The idea behind the get-together was
for this small group of 5er owners to meet and look at
each other’s cars. Friends taking the time to gather in a
city park, talk about what it takes to keep one of these
cars on the road and prod each other about why they do.
The first event yielded 50 BMW E12 and E28 cars.
Planned functions included a show and shine, tech
sessions, an autocross and awards ceremony. Ft. Worth’s
Trinity Park on the river was the setting for this event,
which was to become the future for 5er Fest as an annual
event.
Next year, the event was held in Banner Elk, North
Carolina. Enthusiasm abounded with the success of
the previous year’s event. Almost 100 E12 and E28 cars
gathered at the base of Sugar Mountain ski resort in the
mountains of North Carolina. 5er Fest 2003 included tech
sessions, an awards banquet in downtown Boone, and a
lot of picture taking. Attendees drove to the event from as
far away as California, just to be a part of it. The event got
attention from Bimmer magazine as well as European Car.
Then in September of 2004, organizers put together the
event in San Diego, California. Once again, nearly 100
cars arrived at the event. 5er Fest 2004 used two venues
that turned out to be the next best thing to having it right
on the beach; The show and shine part of the event was
held at Simpson’s Nursery in Jamul, California, while the
awards banquet and raffle was held at the Marina Village
Conference Center, in San Diego.

that will enable seamless
integration of the iPod for
the newest generation of
BMW models. With the new
BMW Interface for iPod this
means that seamless iPod
connectivity will be available
for every current BMW
model.
The new BMW Interface for
iPod will be available for
owners of the new BMW 3
Series Sedans and Sports Wagons as well as the 5, 6,
and 7 Series. It will also be available for the new M5
Sedan and M6 Coupe. It will enable audiophiles to bring
their entire music collections with them, plug directly
and effortlessly into a superior sound system while
maintaining uncompromised control over their driving
experience. Since the new Interface is compatible with
SIRIUS satellite radio as well as the recently introduced
DP
HD Radio, owners will be able to enjoy a broad selection
of high fidelity broadcast music sources as well. The
original BMW iPod Adapter will continue to be available
for 2002 and later BMW models: X3, X5, Z4, and previous
generation 3 Series.
The original BMW iPod Adapter
was the world’s first seamless
integration between iPod and a
vehicle audio system. The new
Interface will also allow users to
incorporate their iPods directly
into their car’s sound system,
but with the newly available
capability to sort their music
according to their own playlists,
as well as by artist, album, genre,
podcast, and finally, a random
selection of 500 songs from the
user library. Artist, album, and
song title will appear in the Display Monitor.
The seamless integration of iPod makes it effortless
for drivers to control their music through their existing
audio system and the multifunction steering wheel.
The new BMW Interface for iPod enables drivers to

The Patina Digest
By: Steve Waddell
Avoid parallel parking altogether.
At restaurants, I like to park so I can see my car from the
table and can keep an eye on it. Sure, that sounds a little
silly; just don’t let anyone see you waving at your car.
As for valet parking, see comments on parallel parking.
(“Sure, I’ll pay you to jam my car into a 3-foot wide space
that forces you to climb through the window to get out.”)
“Parking in the Wild”
With the beautiful weather upon us, it’s time to bring our
classics out. However, with that comes the parking threat
of big nasty door dings and parking lot scratches seem to
total an otherwise perfect vehicle. So
let’s talk about defensive parking and
how to avoid getting that damage in
“...downhill-rolling
the first place.
kamikaze
shopping carts on windy days...”
So here you go: you’ve got to run to
the grocery store to pick up some
milk. You pull into the parking lot and scan around for
a safe space. Wow! There’s a spot right in front! Wrong.
You’ve almost been suckered in to picking the wrong kind
of space. “It’s a short walk and I’ll only be in the store for
a second”, you reason. The problem is that these spaces
have too much pedestrian traffic, not to mention other cars
pulling in and out, flinging doors open. Always go for the
spot near one of those islands a little further out. These
spaces are a better bet, especially if you park on the down
side of the island, snuggled against the curb. This way,
you’ll be offered some protection from the downhill-rolling
kamikaze shopping carts on windy days, and from careless
cart abandoners. Never park at the lowest point in a lot or
near a storm drain inlet for the same reasons. Everything
rolls downhill. And remember, big 2-door sedans have big
heavy doors that swing open with force in the downhill
direction.
Next, avoid parking next to a vehicle with Spongebob or
Winne-the-Pooh stickers on the windows. Kids are great,
but they aren’t always the careful little car people we’d
wish they’d be. Not that most adults are either, mind you.
Also, convenience stores are always a gamble. The lot may
have been vacant when you arrived, but can be completely full by the time you walk out. Park off to the side, but not
in line with someone backing out of another space.
A.
B.
C.
Circle the parking lot until it stops raining,
Say, “Sorry honey, we’re getting wet”, or
Drop her at the door and swim in after safely
parking in a high and safe spot. Parking lots flood
too. (Just an aside: after previously having tried
option B, I wouldn’t altogether recommend it.)
Once we’ve lovingly parked our car in a safe spot and are
walking toward the store, why do we always look back as
if it’s going to smile at us and say, “thanks”? Why do we
leave the store with that worried-parent look on our face,
visually scanning our car for damage while looking at tire
pressure or for coolant leaks? And why, once assured that
all is okay, do we pat the car on the roof and think, “yeah, I
missed you too - now let’s get out of here”. (Okay - I’m not
the only one who does this, right? Right? Anyone?)
All in all, these techniques have worked great for me - I
went without a ding until a few years ago when a 10-yearold girl ran into the back of my vehicle while parking her
mom’s car in our lot. Fortunately, only the vehicles were
damaged. Oh, well - it’s only a car...
Enjoy the ride.

Here’s another situation to avoid: It’s
pouring down rain. As you pull into
the parking lot, beads of perspiration form on your forehead. Then it
happens: your wife says, “Can’t you
park right up front so we don’t get
wet?” Oooh, what to do? Do you:

Let’s Go Racing!
continued from pg. 9
I resigned myself to the fact that it would tough starting
in the back of the pack, in a race where the windshield
wipers were moving faster than the car. As the green
flag fell, the roar of M20 engines was all I could hear.
Visibility beyond the car directly in front of mine was
nearly impossible. To all the drivers credit the first
corner was clean and everyone soon sorted into single
file. During the first lap, I managed to pick off three of
the slower E30’s putting me up to eighth. Then going
into Hog Pen the car I was following splashed trough a
small puddle sending him off track and putting me into
seventh.
After a few more laps, I found myself up with the five
front-runners, all dicing for position. Since I was close
enough to keep touch with all the leaders and we
still had lots of time to race, I opted for a strategy of
patience. Sit back and let the other drivers push each
other around. Wait for someone to make a mistake then
pounce. This worked well and the wet conditions tuned
out to be my best weapon against my competitors.
Soon the driver in front of me pressed a braking zone too
hard and I was by as he tried to gather things up. Now
I was in fifth. On the next lap, I got a great run on the
back straight and managed to get by another car under
braking. 4th Place! And the race is only half way over.
At this point things changed; no longer was I picking
off drivers at will. The competitors I ran with are all
competent and comfortable in the wet. I started pushing
my car harder and harder. Trying to roll on the gas a
little sooner and get on the brakes a little later. With
just a few laps remaining in the race, Carter Hunt the
Spec E30 Series Director, in a rare and uncharacteristic
bobble, dropped four wheels off the track coming out of
NASCAR corner. This forced Carter to lift just enough
for the driver I had just passed and myself to squeeze by
him.
Then it happened. Coming out onto the lower “S’es” as I
was rolling on the gas, without warning my car snatched
to the left and then violently back to the right. I thought
that I was gone for sure and hoped the tire wall hit
wouldn’t be too severe. Somehow, I managed to catch it
and got back under control. Carter Hunt who was right
behind me described it as “The best “catch” he’d have
ever seen.”
The race continued in this order for a lap or two more
with my rearview mirror full of Han Ah-Sue’s car. We
passed start/finish and I saw the white flag signaling
one lap remaining. Was I relieved! Keeping a watchful
eye on the rearview, I made my BMW as wide as I
das Kummet - May • June 2006
could, hoping to keep those cars behind me — behind
me. I knew that if I were to be passed, it would have
to be coming out of the Oak Tree corner and down
the back straight. Since I had to hold a defensive line
into that corner, Han in the 325i right behind me could
take a better line and get a better run off the corner. I
entered the corner as fast I could and rolled on the
throttle briskly but carefully, trying to maximize traction.
Looking in the mirror, I saw just what I expected. Han
had come screaming out of the corner and I knew the
inevitable pass was only moments away. Then to my
surprise, Han’s car swapped ends. All I saw were his
brake lights facing backwards on the track as other cars
took evasive action to avoid his spin. This opened up
enough of a gap for me to cruise home to a comfortable
3rd place finish.
After the race, I was overwhelmed with a sense of
exhilaration and at the same time, I was completely
exhausted. My body ached from prolonged muscle
tension and I found it difficult to get my footing for a few
seconds after immerging from my racecar. Few things I
have experienced in life compare to this day. Flying in
combat, getting married and watching my first son be
born are the only experiences that compare. I didn’t win
this race…but it was, without question, one of the most
exciting 40 minutes of my life and an experience that I
will never forget.

The BMW Zentrum just outside of Greenville, South

200 BMW E12 and E28 cars registered by the time
registration closed in early May, the event proved to
be the largest single gathering of the cars in the US
to date. History was made with nearly 300 attendees
registered for the Memorial Day holiday weekend Fest.
With the help of the BMW CCA, the Peachtree Chapter

sponsors, 5er Fest 2005 was another successful gettogether for the enthusiastic owners who keep these
cars on the road.

Now with four annual 5er Fest events gone by, owners
are looking forward to the fifth event for 2006. Once
again, they’ll all drive 100’s, maybe even 1000’s, of miles
