Presidentially
Speaking
Hello drivers, the chapter elections are complete and the
results are:
Curt Kiser - President;
Gary Wickstrand - Vice President;
Bill Oates - Secretary;
Rusty Barton - Treasurer;
Kempton Shields - Member at Large.
This constitutes the Board of Governors for 2005. The
updated contact information for these individuals is listed on
page 2.
I am pleased to be able to serve as your President and provide a firm hand on the tiller for 2005. We all should appreciate the improved condition of the chapter as Bob Eveleigh
has been able to meet his goals set way back in March of
2002. Those goals were to:
1. increase involvement in activities,
2. increase our use of technology to communicate,
3. enhance driving programs for students,
4. raise our profile with National BMW CCA.
Well congratulations Bob, I believe you’ve achieved all of
those very worthy goals. Saying thank you for all your
efforts just doesn’t seem enough.
We have the 2005 events schedule complete and feel there
are plenty of various activities for you to enjoy. The first part
of the event calendar is posted on page 3.
We have some familiar fare that many people like along with
a new driving event. Indoor Karting! Bring the youngsters
to this one if you want to get them hooked on driving and
to learn driving skills.
And speaking of young teenagers driving, we are set on
providing a Street Survival Teen driving school this year! We
have had a great turnout of volunteers to work so I’m confident it will be successful. Your teens will be the benefactors
of this great opportunity. We are aiming for April or early
May. Keep an eye on the calendar for much more to come.
Our event horizon shows the Annual Chapter Banquet will
be held on 5 February at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (formerly
the Clarion Hotel) on Bonney Road, Virginia Beach. The
information and reservations form is on page 5. Come out
and join us for what is always a very pleasant evening.
This year's Virginia Beach rally will be on February 19. This
is turning into a favorite to break out of the wintertime
blues. We hope to see you there.
Most exciting of all is our good fortune to have the 2005
Oktoberfest hosted by our North Carolina friends, the
Tarheel Chapter. You will see more about this here and in
the Roundel. If you have never been, or it’s been awhile,
you should take full advantage of it being located so near to
us. We will be designating a chapter O'Fest coordinator
soon for organizing and making arrangements. We will
probably book a block of hotel rooms so get out your calendar and look at the week of September 17-23. I would
absolutely love to see a great Tidewater chapter attendance.
I am excited to see what 2005 will bring to the chapter and I
hope to meet you at an event and get to know you. Our
membership in this car club is more like a friendship
club....with great cars.
Remember to save those January Roundel mailing labels so
you can vote for the National officers.
I’ll see you around the bend,
Curt Kiser

Mark Your Calendars for National O’Fest in Greensboro, NC
Many of you know first hand how much fun you can have
at our local O’Fest at Checkered Flag. Well, imagine a
much larger event with activities to interest every BMW
owner and you have National O’Fest, the annual gathering of BMW CCA owners. This year O’Fest is closer to
home than it has been since 2000. The event will headquarter in Greensboro, NC, just 5.5 hours from anywhere
in Hampton Roads.
Guten tag Y’all!
Buff Bimmerhead here
to tell you about
OKTOBERFEST 2005.
We’re doing it in September, just like the
folks back in Munich.
But this one’s in North
Carolina, where the sky
is blue, the weather
mild, and driving is our
passion. Look for me in
the coming months, as
I’ll guide you through a
series of previews of
the terrific events in
store for you at
OKTOBERFEST 2005,
CAROLINA Style! It’s
an adventure you won’t
want to miss!
The event runs from Saturday, September 17th through
Friday September 23rd. Because O’Fest is so large
events will be held in Greensboro and the surrounding
area. Major driving events such as the BMW CCA Club
Race (open to spectators) and High Performance Driving
School will be held in Danville, Virginia at Virginia
International Raceway (VIR). VIR is a beautiful 3.25 mile
road course located in along the Dan River. Learn more
about VIR at www.virclub.com. There will also be an
autocross, driving skills clinic, fun drive, road rally and
gymkhana for members who want to enjoy their cars at
lower speeds.
For the next few editions of Das Kummet we will feature
a short article on one or two aspects of O’Fest in the
hope your interest in attending will be peaked. The 2000
O’Fest in Spartanburg, SC had nearly 2000 registrants.
This year’s event holds the promise of an even bigger
turn out! If you have questions about O’Fest, contact a
member who has attended in the recent past – Rusty
Barton, Joe Bivins, Curt Kiser, Bob Eveleigh, Bob Parsons.
Their contact information appears on the inside front
cover of this newsletter.
November Quarterly Meeting and Oyster Roast
If you didn’t make it to the Redding’s for the Fall
Quarterly Meeting, you missed one of the best meetings
we’ve had in a very long time.
As we advertised, the club picked up a portion of the
food and drink costs; so for a miserly $15.00 out of our
pockets, we ate like kings and queens. John, Dana and
Bryce spared nothing in putting on an Oyster Roast and
BBQ Tour d’ Force. John, Curt and a number of other
members manned the oyster bar and make sure the
shucking was non-stop. The Redding’s have a great
home in Ghent and they were very generous to open it
up to the Club.
6
We have published pictures from the event in the center
section of this newsletter. As you can tell we had a great
turnout and everyone had a great time. It was nice to
see a lot of familiar faces from other events as well as
some new ones
(it’s especially
nice when a
member brings
someone new).
Keep your eyes
open for the next
event. We hope
to see you there.

7th Annual Weeping Radish Drive
By: Bob Parsons
Saturday December 11th turned out to be a beautiful
sunny day for a drive to the Outer Banks of North
Carolina and
the Weeping
Radish
Restaurant
and Brewery.
It was good to
see some
familiar faces
and cars but it
was great to
see members
who were joining us for the first time. A
few of these folks have just located to
our area and it was a good opportunity
for them to explore the country roads
from Deep Creek and Virginia Beach to
the Outer Banks.
Two groups started out, one from
Virginia Beach led by Ed Delanis and the
other from Deep Creek led by Bob
Parsons. Ed had six shiny BMW's in his caravan and Bob
had 13 BMW's in his caravan all looking good.
As the group from Deep Creek motored south on Route
17 beside the Dismal Swamp Canal they were treated to
the sight of several Bald Eagles and Osprey. It was very
nice to see these majestic birds in their prime habitat so
close to the highway.
The two groups got together for a brief rest stop in
Grandy to greet each other before proceeding down
highway 168 to the restaurant in Manteo. The highway
gods were looking after us for the 40-minute drive with
no interruptions in our caravan through all the traffic
lights until we hit Milepost 8. There some of us had
to stop at the only red light on our trip.
Once again the Weeping Radish Restaurant and its'
staff welcomed us with open arms and plenty of
good food. This year I believe the table set up was
well organized and more compatible for conversation. Forty-five people were well taken care of without delay after a brief introduction from our
President Bob
Eveleigh. This was the
last event of the year
for the club and it
was the last official
duty that Bob was to
perform as the president of our club. Bob
has been the president for the last three
years and has done a
magnificent job, now
it is time for Bob to spend more time with his growing
family. THANKS Bob!
And thanks to all the people who donated over 150
pounds of food for one of the charities we support, the
Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. What a wonderful
way to end our year of support for the Foodbank.
I would like to wish all our members a very Merry
Christmas and Happy Holiday season and hope that the
year ends well for you and your loved ones.

It’s a Mod World
By: Robert J. Avery
tires and limited slip differential.
Also impressive was the precision
and shorter throw of the shifter
compared to my 540. The car was
incredibly nimble for a two ton
sedan, and it was amazing to corner at speed on some exceptional
twisty bends. It was a drive that will
always stand out in my memory,
and just thinking of it as I write
brings a smile back to my face.
An Ultimate M5
It was at the July Fun Drive to
Elizabeth City that I had occasion to dine with Tim Jones.
Over the course of the leisurely
luncheon, the topic of conversation turned to the E39 5
series. Tim is the past owner of
a 540i similar to mine, but he is
the current owner of an M5
that has been
tricked-out with
every horsepower
gadget that Dinan
makes for the car.
Tim lives part of
the year in
Virginia, but lives
the rest of the
year in Florida; so
as yet I had never
seen the car. Imagine my delight when he
offered to let me take it for a road test the
next time he was back in Virginia!
My son and I drove out to rural Tidewater
Virginia to meet Tim at his home on a beautiful August
Saturday morning. In his driveway I saw the familiar lines
of a silver sedan. After some preliminary discussion of the
car and its features, we took off on some of the winding
back roads in the vicinity. Tim was leading in his E28 535i,
and I followed in the M5. I was immediately struck by the
power on tap, but the over 470 HP was delivered in an
extremely controlled manner thanks to the 285 width rear
das Kummet - January • February 2005
The M5’s already excellent power
plant is helped by such
refinements as equal
length tubular headers,
dual carbon fiber cold air
intakes, high flow throttle bodies & tuned velocity stacks, performance
engine software, and
dual high flow rear
exhausts with four 3 inch
tips. What a symphony it
makes! The car is also
enhanced by the beautiful Dinan alloy road
wheels and fat Michelin Pilots. Although no sane individual could ever make use of the car’s near 200 MPH top
speed on public roads, it would no doubt be a blast to
drive on a track outing. I want to thank Tim for a memory
that I will always savor, as well as providing the material
for this article. Now I will conclude by letting some pictures of the car speak for themselves. Until next time!

November Driving Skills Clinic
We had a beautiful day for the November 22nd clinic. It
was held, like other 2004 clinics, at Pungo Airfield. This a
good course for us with no walls or other barriers, allowing students and instructors to drive comfortably. The
fourteen students and eleven instructors showed up early
and ready to roll.
The students were mostly beginners, so in the morning
all students worked the same three drills. One group
learned about weight transfer and traction on the skid
pad. Another group worked on looking ahead, steering
and hand position on the slalom drill. Meanwhile the
third group drove the ‘four corners’ drill. The students
and instructors rotated from drill to drill so everyone got
a plenty of driving time with each course.
During the breaks instructors took students for rides on
the course, which was quite popular with both. It was my
first chance to try my 1981 5 series since I installed a limited-slip differential and I was delighted at the difference
in how it handled. My apologies to any of my student-riders for any excess 'enthusiasm' on my part.
The students and instructors worked on ‘putting it all
together’. I was struck by how smooth the students
became and how quickly they caught on. We had more
than a few ‘naturals’ out there. Our Chief Instructor, Bob
Brochu commented: “Some of the students were flying
around the track like they had done it forever. It would
have made some of the best auto-crossers take note!!”
“Special thanks to all of the instructors and helpers that
help put on this event. It could not be done without
their help. Thank You! Wait till next year! We have
some great ideas to make our driving schools even more
fun. Stay tuned in to the Das Kummet for future events
and remember, sign up early! More people are finding
out how much fun it is and the events will be filling up
quickly”
Can’t wait until then? Then come out to the one of the
local autocrosses sponsored by groups in our ‘Links’ section of the website, www.tidewaterbmwcca.org.
After lunch, the 3 drills were combined into one course.

Joe Bivins' 2003 E46 M3
Joe bought his M3 in August after a long
search. Joe opted for a traditional 6 speed
instead of SMG II. To see what his new car
really could do, Joe visited VIR for a weekend on the track where it performed flawlessly. This is Joe’s 5th BMW and he says it
is the best one yet!
