Essential
Guide to
Golfing in
Meath,
Ireland
Meath - Host County to The 2011 Solheim Cup
Welcome to Meath & the Boyne Valley
Meath - home to some of the finest golf
courses in all of Ireland.
From the challenging parklands at Headfort, Royal Tara and
Co. Meath Golf Club to the historic old links at Laytown &
Bettystown, golfers of all ages and standards will find a course
to suit their game. Add in well established old favourites at Black
Bush, Ashbourne, Navan and Kilcock - together with more
recent gems such as Killeen Castle, Knightsbrook, Rathcore,
Julianstown and Bellewstown - and there is enough variety to
whet any golfer’s appetite to stay and play in County Meath.
The hosting of The 2011 Solheim Cup at the magnificent Jack
Nicklaus designed championship course at Killeen Castle and
the PING Junior Solheim Cup at Knightsbrook only enhances
Meath’s reputation as a great place to play golf and explore
some of the Boyne Valley’s wonderful heritage.
Meath offers quality and value to the visiting golfer and you
will be assured of a warm Irish welcome wherever you go. You
will find accommodation to match the great golf courses with
a selection of fine hotels, guest houses and self catering, all
within easy reach of every course in the county.
“I enjoyed over 30 years on the European Tour, the Seniors Tour in
Europe and the United States and played in 2 Ryder Cups. I can
honestly say that the quality and variety of courses in Meath is on a
par with anywhere I have been. It’s all here, from courses to suit the
big hitting young guns to the more leisurely players, golfers of all
ages and abilities will find a course that will suit their game. I know
that everyone will enjoy their golf in Meath and will look forward to
”
coming back for another visit.

Cup player and Ryder Cup 2006 Vice Captain
The 2011 Solheim Cup
September 23rd to 25th
When Two Continents Collide in County Meath...
County Meath will take centre stage in the world of golf when
it hosts The 2011 Solheim Cup from September 23rd to 25th
at Killeen Castle. Make sure to catch all the drama on the
spectacular Jack Nicklaus signature course as the best female
golf players in the globe prepare for battle.
This is the first time that the prestigious Solheim Cup has taken
place on Irish soil and Meath is honoured to host the biennial,
transatlantic team match play competition which pits the top
European-born players from the Ladies European Tour (LET)
against their rivals from the LPGA in the United States.
There will be extra spice to this latest instalment as the European
team attempt on home turf to win back the famous Waterford
Crystal Trophy won by the United States at Sugar Grove in
Illinois in 2009.
As a bonus, the sixth PING Junior Solheim Cup takes place at
Knightsbrook Hotel Spa & Golf Resort from September 20th to
21st when the cream of Europe’s and the United State’s golfers
aged 12 to 18 lock horns. There is a terrific buzz and expectation
around this event with the famed Maguire twins from Cavan
likely to form the backbone of the European team.
Universally recognised as ‘Ireland’s Heritage Capital’, County
Meath is now poised to join the ranks of Ireland’s top golf
destinations as it features the greatest female golf event in the
world - The 2011 Solheim Cup.
The 2011 Solheim Cup
September 23rd to 25th
When Two Continents Collide in County Meath...
The Solheim Cup is a three-day, match-play competition. The
first two days of competition feature two sessions each day, with
a total of eight foursomes and eight four-ball matches over the
two days. The final day consists of 12 singles matches.
The competition is named in honour of Karsten Solheim, and
his family, the makers of PING golf equipment. The Solheim Cup
is the most prestigious international team event in women's
professional golf. It is a biennial, trans-Atlantic team match-play
competition featuring the best U.S.-born players from the LPGA
and the best European-born players from the LET. The 2009
Solheim Cup was played at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove.
It will be contested at Killeen Castle in 2011 and then moves to
Colorado Golf Club in Parker in 2013.
Killeen Castle, the ancestral home of the Earls of Fingal, sits in
a wooded estate in 600 acres in Dunsany, Co. Meath. Set in the
historic grounds of one of Ireland's oldest and finest 12th
century Norman castles lies the magnificent 7,700 yard
Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Located just north of
Dunshaughlin in the heart of Royal Meath overlooked by the
ancient Hill of Tara, Killeen Castle is just minutes from the
picturesque hamlet of Dunsany. Killeen Castle is only 35
minutes from Dublin International Airport and 45 minutes from
Dublin city centre.

Rathcore Golf Course may be described as parkland but this would not do it
justice. It is nice to find a really good course that doesn’t have 8000 in its sights,
but don’t be lulled - extra long it may not be, but it will test your game,
especially around the greens. It has numerous natural springs that enable 12
of the holes to have water features. Add to this the rolling hills, numerous
mature trees, yellow furze and strong historical background and you indeed
have a golf course that can match any other for class. Under the direction of
Mel Flanagan, this course has been moulded by Mick Lyons with emphasis on
retaining the inherent charm of the surrounding area.
Accommodation
The magnificently constructed circular clubhouse draws its inspiration from
the ring forts located on the course. It has been cleverly sunk below the level
of the adjoining 18th fairway, leaving only the roof, upper floor and veranda
visible from the course.

Located just 30 minutes north of Dublin in
the North East of Ireland and at the heart
of Ireland’s Boyne Valley, County Meath
can boast a unique and enviable location
at the hub of four major motorways - the
M1, M2, M3 and M4. We are rightfully
proud of the fact that we are Ireland’s
most accessible county.
County Meath is located only 30 minutes
Dublin International Airport while the ferry
ports in Dublin, Dun Laoghaire and Belfast
are also convenient. Regular train services
from Dublin stop at Laytown, Drogheda and
Dunboyne while there are frequent bus
services throughout County Meath from
Dublin.

Heritage & Leisure
Did you know….!
Welcome to Meath & the Boyne Valley region, a land full
of contradictions. Boasting iconic World Heritage sites yet
home to some of Europe's most uber-cool accommodation.
Silently tucked away yet so accessible to bustling Dublin
city. Setting your heart racing at our four racecourses yet
putting you at rest in one of our sumptuous spas. Where
wonderful living heritage and invigorating leisure activities
sit effortlessly side by side…
Take the first step and check out www.meathtourism.ie today!
1. Meath is known as the Royal County because it was once the seat of
the High Kings of Ireland where they ruled from the Hill of Tara.
2. It is home to the only official strand races in Europe, which take place
on Laytown Beach each September.
3. Meath is home to one of three World Designated Heritage Sites in
Ireland, the passage tombs of Brú na Bóinne (Newgrange) which are
500 years older than the Pyramids of Egypt.
4. Meath was once the fifth province of Ireland called Mide which incorporated what is now Westmeath and large parts of Cavan and Longford
5. Trim Castle is Ireland’s Largest Anglo-Norman Castle and also the
place where the film Braveheart was shot.
6. Ireland’s version of the Olympic games, the Great Aonach took place
at Tailteann (Teltown) located half way between Kells and Navan trianually for over 3,000 years.
7. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (Halloween) began in County
Meath at the Hill of Ward (Tlachtga) over 2000 years ago. The ‘Spirits of
Meath’ Festival commemorates this every October.
8. The Battle of the Boyne (1690) site in Oldbridge had the largest
number of troops ever deployed on an Irish battlefield.
9. St. Colmcille’s monks fled from Iona to Kells in 806AD where they
completed their illuminated manuscript of the Four Gospels - better
known as The Book of Kells.
10. The Tara Brooch and the Book of Kells are only two of best known
examples of the long tradition of crafts excellence in Meath. Today our
craftworkers are renowned as some of the most gifted in the country.
