SPring 2016 LIBRARY EVENTS GUIDE FOR KIDS Story Time! Join Ms. Nicole, Brary Bear, Ms. Michelle, Ms. Retta, and Bob Dog for Story Time! This weekly program brings the children’s books of the library to life through puppet shows, skits, songs, and dances. Tuesdays at 10am and 1pm. March 1 | Dr. Seuss Celebration March 8 | Runaway Pancake March 15 | Musical Story Time! - Rock with J. S. Bach March 22 | Maybelle and the Ogre March 29 | The Ugly Duckling April 5 | No Story Time (Spring Break) April 12 | Away From Home April 19 | Animal Parade April 26 | Tortoise and Jackrabbit May 3 | Cowgirl Kate May 7 (Saturday at 11am) | Derby Day Special! Baby and Me! A special story time for babies 0-2 years of age. The class is 20 minutes long. One child per caregiver will join Miss Katie in singing songs and introducing babies to stories and books. Tuesdays at 11am. Wonder Time’s Seuss-on-the-Loose THINGS will be wild at the Library! Stop in for crafts, face painting, balloon animals, and photo-ops with some of your favorite Seuss characters. Saturday | March 12 | 1pm - 3pm Minecraft Day Crafts, activities, puzzles, and more - all Minecraft-themed! Wonder Time is an engaging program that encourages curiosity and promotes self-expression. Children will discover that learning is fun! Each month children will have an opportunity to “wonder” about something. Wonder Time is geared toward (but not limited to) children ages 6-14. Thursday | March 17 | 4pm - 6pm Featuring Haley Martin, nutrition assistant at the McCracken County Extension Office Thursday | April 21 | 4pm - 6pm Featuring musical instruments with Ms. Retta and Michael Vessels Thursday | May 19 | 4pm - 6pm Love on a Leash Dogs in the Library? Yes, it’s true. Children will have a chance to meet and interact with pet therapy dogs-intraining and win prizes! Tuesday | March 15 | 6:30pm Tuesday | April 19 | 6:30pm Tuesday | May 17 | 6:30pm Legos at the Library We clear out the conference room to make room for our giant collection of Lego bricks! Legos at the Library is open to all children, boys and girls, who want to turn their creativity into something they can design and then build. Parents are welcome to get involved to build something amazing with their child. Saturdays from 1-4pm. FOR TEENS Mad Hatter’s Party Tuesday | April 5 | 10am-4pm Step through the looking glass and into this special Teen T.G.I.F. party. Don’t be late. Wear your best hat. We’ll play flamingo croquet and drink tea. Ages 11-17. Star Wars Padawan Party! Friday | April 8 | 2:06pm Dress like your favorite character and drop in for crafts and prizes! Sunday | May 1 | 1pm-3pm Teen TGIF A program for teens 11-17 years of age. Meet us at your public library on Friday afternoons at 4pm. There will be snacks and a problem(s) the library needs your help to solve. Wonder Time! Fridays at 4pm. for ALL AGES Traditional Irish Music: Live at the Library Happy St. Patrick’s Day! The talented father-son duo of Eddie and Josh Coffey will perform traditional Irish music live in the center of the first floor! Thursday | March 17 | 4pm-6pm Family Game Night and Chess Group Family Game Night Bring the whole family to the library and grab a board game to play after you check out your books and movies. We’ve got all your favorites, and you can play them in your favorite family-friendly environment - the public library! Chess Lessons with James Patterson Local chess master and United States Chess Federation member James Patterson is here to teach anyone of any age about the game of chess. Thursdays from 5pm-8pm Read Like a Girl Book and Craft Club soldier’s soldier. As Shelby Foote said, “he was Regular Army to the shoe-soles.” During his nearly 42-year career, General Smith was a teacher, mentor, and role model for many young officers who became prominent Civil War generals. Thursday | March 24 | 7pm Paper Flower Workshop Deck your house out for spring, or make a beautiful gift for Mother’s Day! Construct gorgeous, easy to make roses, carnations and gladiolas from simple crepe paper, tissue paper and wire. All materials will be provided. Seating is limited at this free and fun craft program for adults, so please re-register at the 1st floor Information Desk or by calling 270-442-2510x119. Dessert provided too! Thursday | April 28 | 7pm – 8pm Evenings Upstairs Arks, Broad Horns, and Hoop Pole Boats: the America Flatboat Wreck in Southern Illinois Presented by Mark J. Wagner, Director of Center for Archaeological Investigations Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL and author of The Wreck of the “America” in Southern Illinois: A Flatboat on the Ohio River. Read Like a Girl is a program for mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters - girls of all ages! Join Kim Russell from WKCTC to discuss the book and do a craft project each month. Read the book with a family member and attend together! Sunday | March 20 | 3pm Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary Craft: Decorate your own book bag. Sunday | April 17 | 3pm Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol Craft: Decorate a ceramic teacup planter. Barkley Presented by award-winning documentarian and WKMS Morning Edition host Todd Hatton. FOR ADULTS Gen. Charles Ferguson Smith: Teacher of Civil War Generals Presented by author, educator, and historian Allen Mesch. From the training field at West Point to the entrenchments at Fort Donelson, Charles Ferguson Smith was the Faces & Places in Kentucky Quilts & Textiles Presented by Sandy Staebell, Kentucky Museum Registrar/Collections Curator, Western Kentucky University. Thursday | April 21 | 9am-7pm Ben Moss: Baseball Autographs and Memoribilia Ben Moss, avid collector and middle school teacher, will display baseball autographs and memorabilia from his collection. Mr. Moss will display his collection in the Washington Street lobby from 6-8:30pm and all are invited to stop by and explore artifacts from baseball’s past. Thursday | April 21 | 6pm-8:30pm. Dr. Scott Garrett: Patriotism and the Ongoing American Experience Dr. Scott Garrett will discuss American-style patriotism in its historical context from the earliest days of our Republic down to the present.
