Special Olympics Massachusetts provides yearround sports training, athletic competition and
other health related programming for over 11,000
athletes with intelliectual disabilities. Through the
power of sports, the Special Olympics movement
has a major impact on the lives of people with and
without intellectual disabilities, uniting
Massachusetts communities by fostering a sense of
goodwill and inclusion.
Special Olympics is a positive, powerful force in the
lives of athletes and all that come in contact with
the organization. Through participation in Special
Olympics programs athletes gain access to quality
health screenings and programs and a vast social
network that provides a greater quality of life.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear Friends,
Thank you all so much for making 2014 another great year at Special Olympics Massachusetts. It is
because of you that the Special Olympics mission continues to grow in communities throughout the state.
As you may know, we do not require athletes to pay to participate. Therefore, it is you who provide uniforms,
transportation, facilities, and more importantly, help Special Olympics athletes fulfill their goals and dreams.
As you’ll see in this report, your support helped 11,326 athletes train and compete in 24 different sports in 2014. The
story of Michael Joyce, one of these athletes, shows what it truly means to be a part of Special Olympics. Michael
participated with our North Shore Rovers soccer team this fall. He was so excited and proud to be part of this great team
that he slept in his uniform every Saturday night before his Sunday practices. Your support not only provides Michael’s
uniform, it provides Michael with a sense of belonging and so much more. Thank you for providing for Michael and so
many others.
One major theme we worked on in 2014 at SOMA was “community building”. A great example of this happened during
our basketball season. Thanks to incredible partnerships with high schools, colleges and other community groups, we
were able to add over 40 basketball competitions to our season. We called these competitions “Community Games”.
Because of “Community Games”, athletes had more opportunities to participate in sports. Schools, volunteers, donors
and corporate partners were able to become more engaged. Perhaps most importantly, communities were able to rally
around sports as a catalyst for respect and inclusion for all! Your support is what made this possible. We will continue to
build communities of respect, inclusion and opportunity through the power of sports in 2015 and beyond.
Thank you again so much for being in integral part of Special Olympics Massachusetts. We hope to see you out on the
field, the court, the rink and in the community with us in 2015 and beyond! We hope that you will continue to help us
build this great mission.
In the Spirit of Special Olympics,
Mary Beth McMahon, President & CEO
