Special Make Up Screenings!
CASABLANCA
at 8:00, 10:00
(1942) dir Michael Curtiz w/Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid,
Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Dooley Wilson [102 min]
Since half of our Valentine’s Day shows of this timeless classic were disrupted by
exploding manhole covers (we kid you not), the Brattle is pleased to offer these
“make-up” screenings of one of our favorite bittersweet romances. Bogart plays
Rick, an American ex-patriot running a bar (and illicit gambling den) in
Casablanca at the beginning of WWII. An avowed cynic, Rick remains neutral in
the face of Nazi occupation – until an old flame (Bergman’s Ilsa) appears on the
arm of a French resistance fighter trying to escape to the U.S.
MGM has struck a brand new print of this
Chinese director’s most dazzling film so we use
the occasion as an excuse to highlight some of
the gems from his long career. This series kicks
off with two days of screenings of the brand
new 35mm print of RAISE THE RED LANTERN
starring Yimou’s early career muse Gong Li. We
also feature many of his other major period
pieces including JU DOU and TO LIVE alongside
some of his more recent (and more personal)
films (THE ROAD HOME, RIDING ALONE FOR
THOUSANDS OF MILES) and, of course, his
most recent U.S. release CURSE OF THE
GOLDEN FLOWER in concert with his other two
epic, action-adventure movies, HERO and
HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS.
Please see below for full line-up and schedule for this series.
Friday, June 15 – Thursday, June 21
at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30
(1957) dir Alexander Mackendrick
w/Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster [96 min]
Lancaster and Curtis shine as a ruthless
Big Apple gossip columnist and his
toady/rival who is developing something
like a conscience. With a script by the great
Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman and
great performances all around, the barbs
fly fast and furious in this caustic tale.
at 3:30, 8:00
(1932) dir Ernst Lubitsch w/Miriam Hopkins, Herbert Marshall, Kay Francis,
Charles Ruggles, Edward Everett Horton [83 min]
A delectable confection, Ernst Lubitsch’s hilarious screwball comedy of jewel
thieves in love stands the test of time as one of the most entertaining films of the
30s. Marshall and Hopkins are the thieves in question and, when they set their
sights on one Madame Colet (Francis), Marshall finds himself in the unenviable
position of having to choose between two beautiful women.
50th Anniversary!
SILK STOCKINGS
Double Feature!
at 5:30
(1957) dir Rouben Mamoulian w/Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Peter Lorre [117 min]
This musical remake of Lubitsch’s Ninotchka features Astaire as an American
movie producer in Paris who helps to sway the allegiances of a serious and dedicated Soviet agent (Charisse). Brimming with effervescent Cole Porter songs, SILK
STOCKINGS has the dubious distinction of being the still-spry Astaire’s final full
appearance in a screen musical.
The Late Show: 25th Anniversary!
PINK FLOYD THE WALL
Repertory Series!
THE ENTERTAINER:
A CENTENNIAL TRIBUTE
TO LAURENCE OLIVIER
2007 marks the 100th birthday of one of the
great actors of the 20th century. Laurence Olivier
was a monstrous talent and brought it to bear in
front of and behind the camera, as well as on
and off the stage. With these series we offer a
small sampling of his wide-ranging talent. With
screenings of his directorial work (HENRY V and
HAMLET) as well as his most famous roles interpreting literary characters (WUTHERING
HEIGHTS and REBECCA), we celebrate Olivier’s
intellectual strength, while also delving into some of his more interesting work as
a character actor playing bad guys (MARATHON MAN), slimy hacks (THE ENTERTAINER), and police detectives (BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING). Don’t miss this rare
opportunity to experience the full range of this stellar actor’s talent.
Please see below for full line-up and schedule for this series.
RECENT RAVES
Wednesday, May 2 & Thursday, May 3
ZODIAC
Wed at 10:00pm; Thu at 7:00pm
(2007) dir David Fincher w/Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert
Downey Jr, Chloe Sevigny, Brian Cox, Anthony Edwards [158 min]
This true crime film brings a unique perspective to the stillunsolved Zodiac murders. While ZODIAC has its share of spinechilling sequences, Fincher is more interested in how the effort to
comprehend evil deeds can consume the lives of innocent people
than in telling another serial killer story. The snappy script brings
added life and makes ZODIAC a thoroughly entertaining slice of
1970's San Francisco life.
COMEDY OF POWER
Double Feature!
Wed at 8:00pm; Thu at 4:45, 10:00
(2006) dir Claude Chabrol w/Isabelle Huppert [110 min]
Like ZODIAC, COMEDY OF POWER is a true-crime film that focuses
on the effects that the dogged pursuit of a particular case can have
on the investigator rather than on the result of the investigation.
Legendary French director Chabrol takes on the story of a female
judge (Huppert) investigating shady business practices amongst
the corporate elite of France. A chilling and all-too real exposé of
cronyism and corruption.
Friday, May 4
THE FOUNTAIN
at 7:30
(2006) dir Darren Aronofsky w/Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz,
Ellen Burstyn [96 min]
Unfairly dismissed as a failed project, Aronofsky’s audacious narrative wraps together the same characters in three different eras and
creates a film that deserves a second look. Hugh Jackman stars as
a scientist who is desperately searching for a cure for cancer before
his beloved wife (Weisz) succumbs to the disease. Meanwhile, a
conquistador in the South American past and a man in the future
uncover mysteries of their own. The stories intertwine and twist
themselves into a phantasmagoric crescendo that echoes 2001.
CHILDREN OF MEN
Double Feature!
at 5:15, 9:30
(2006) dir Alfonso Cuaron w/Clive Owen, Julianne Moore,
Michael Caine, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Claire-Hope Ashitey [109 min]
In this adaptation of the PD James novel, it's 2007 and nuclear disaster and environmental destruction have left Britain a fascist state
and the world's population completely infertile. When rumors of a
pregnant girl in Africa give humanity a sliver of hope, it's up to a
jaded government agent and his activist ex-wife to transport her to
safety. This phenomenally compelling end-of-the-world scenario is
chilling in its sheer plausibility, making CHILDREN OF MEN both a
gripping thriller and one of the best cautionary films of the decade.
Sunday, May 6
THE PAINTED VEIL
at 4:30, 7:00, 9:30
(2006) dir John Curran w/Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Liev
Schreiber, Toby Jones, Diana Rigg [125 min]
This widely acclaimed adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s
novel stars Watts and Norton as Kitty and Walter, a British couple
trapped in a loveless marriage in 1920s Shangai. When Kitty succumbs to romantic fantasies and enters into an affair, Walter takes
revenge by accepting a job in a disease ravaged and isolated village – endangering both of their lives in the process.
“Ranks as one of 2006’s quiet gems.” – Premiere Magazine

BAMAKO
at 4:30, 7:00, 9:30
(2006) dir Abderrahmane Sissako w/Aissa Maiga, Tiecoura
Traore [115 min]
In the courtyard of a house in Bamako, the capital city of Mali, a
trial is underway. Proceedings have been undertaken against the
World Bank and the International Monetary Fund for their crimes
against the continent of Africa. Of course, this is a mock trial – or,
at least, a symbolic one – but it includes testimony from real political and cultural figures. Meanwhile, life goes on in the house surrounding the courtyard as Melé, a nightclub singer, deals with her
out-of-work husband, Chaka, and their crumbling marriage.
“H
H H H! Sissako is a poet.” – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

TEARS OF THE BLACK
TIGER
at 5:00, 7:30, 9:45
(2000) dir Wisit Sasanatieng w/Chartchai
Ngamsan, Supakom Kitsuwon, Stella
Malucchi, Suwinit Panjamawat [110 min]
This fantastically entertaining Thai film is
filled with hyperactive pop culture references
but it is also a lovingly rendered tribute to
Technicolor melodramas of the past. The film
takes on the nominal form of a Western with “Black Tiger” a
formidable gunslinger joining the camp of the baddest outlaw
around, Fai. As Fai mounts a deadly campaign against the local
police, Black Tiger must choose between his allegiance to his criminal “family” and the love of his childhood sweetheart. “Absolute
meta-cinematic delirium.” – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe
at 10:00
(1982) dir Alan Parker w/Bob Geldof, Bob Hoskins [95 min]
Alan Parker and Pink Floyd bring the band’s theatrical concept album to the big
screen in this startling and memorable film. Bob Geldof’s haunted looks are used
to great effect as Pink, a rock star on a path of self-destruction who is tormented
by the recollection of his past. Frequently straying into surreal dream sequences,
THE WALL stands with The Who’s Tommy as one of the greatest rock films about
rock stars ever made.
Sunday, June 10
25th Anniversary!
GANDHI
at 1:00, 4:30, 8:00
(1982) dir Richard Attenborough w/Ben Kingsley, Candice Bergen, Edward Fox,
John Gielgud, Trevor Howard, John Mills, Martin Sheen, Saeed Jaffrey [188 min]
Richard Attenborough’s mammoth, multi-Oscar winning epic about the life of the
legendary, peaceful revolutionary Mohandas Gandhi has arguably done more to
educate generations of Americans about the history of India than any schoolbook
could. Barely seen outside of British television prior to this film, GANDHI won Ben
Kingsley an Oscar and made him a household name in the US. GANDHI remains
a stirring, inspiring and majestic film that begs to be seen on the big screen.

DAYS OF GLORY
at 8:00
(2006) dir Rachid Bouchareb w/Jamal Debbouze, Samy Naceri,
Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila [120 min]
Winner, for all four leads, of the best actor award at Cannes 2006,
DAYS OF GLORY tells the largely unknown story of North African
soldiers fighting against the Nazi occupation of France during
WWII. The film focuses on the intertwined tales of four new recruits
and follows them through training to battles in Italy and beyond.
“A film done the way they used to make them, yet energized with
the intensity only the issues of today can provide.” – Kenneth
Turran, Los Angeles Times
WELCOME TO
THE GRINDHOUSE!
Thursday, May 10
ZOMBIE
at 7:30
(1979) dir Lucio Fulci w/ Tisa Farrow [91 min]
ZOMBIE and TORSO were reportedly the two films shown by
directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez to get their cast
and crew in the mood to make their own Grindhouse films. While
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror is a little more… um… fast-paced than
Fulci’s ZOMBIE, need we say more than: a zombie fights a shark?
A group of people lead by a young woman on a search for her
father arrive at an isolated island where a terrifying disease is turning the locals into flesh-eating zombies!
TORSO
Tickets are $10; More info about the event at truthserum.org.
“Nuttily wonderful. One of the year's 10 best films. Once again, Mr. Maddin has
ransacked film history and his own delirious imagination to create a work like
none other: a silently shot film about a man who, on revisiting his childhood
home, hurtles unto a past where orphan children, coy lesbian lovers, and a mad
scientist converge. Delightful!” – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
JIM CRACE
at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (+ Sat & Sun at 3:30)
Please note: 9:30 only on June 19
(1985) dir Gus Van Sant w/Walt Curtis, Doug Cooeyate, Ray Monge [78 min]
Gus Van Sant’s first feature film, MALA NOCHE is an adaptation of the cult autobiographical 1970s novel by Walt Curtis. Walt is a young, out, gay man in Portland,
Oregon where he runs a convenience store in an area populated mainly by bums
and homeless immigrants. Despite himself, Walt falls into an ‘amour fou’ with
Johnny, an illegal Mexican who doesn’t speak a word of English and is barely 18.
Walt is fully aware of his folly but pursues his romantic quarry nonetheless, while
trysting on the side with Johnny’s more-willing friend, Pepper.
Shot in black and white 16mm, MALA NOCHE is a little like a Pacific Northwest
echo of Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise but is also a piece all of its own.
Van Sant skirts the grim side of life with subtle humor and a lyrical visual style
reflected in the rest of his films. He is helped considerably by the low-key and
charming performance of Tim Streeter as Walt – “one of the most realistic, likable
gay characters seen in years,” according to PlanetOut.com. Never fully distributed
in the U.S. and available only in bootleg VHS copies, this reissue features a fully
restored and newly struck film print and represents one of the first opportunities
for Bostonians to see this film in the way it was meant to be seen.
“Written and directed by Mr. Van Sant with sardonic humor … Tim Streeter, who
looks a bit like Richard Gere, gives an exceptionally intelligent performance as
Walt, a man who is tough as nails up to a point and, beyond that, conniving, selfdestructive and forlornly romantic.” – Vincent Canby, The New York Times (1986)

at 4:30, 7:15 (+ Sat & Sun at 1:45)
(2006) dir Ham Tran w/Long Nguyen, Kieu Chinh, Diem Lien, Nguyen Thai
Nguyen, Jayvee Mai The Hiep, Khanh Doan, Cat Ly [135 min]
Inspired by the true stories of Vietnamese refugees who fled their land after the
fall of Saigon – and those who were forced to stay behind, JOURNEY FROM THE
FALL follows one family’s struggle for freedom.
April 30, 1975 marked the end of Vietnam's two-decade-old civil war and the start
of the exodus of hundreds of thousands of refugees. Despite his allegiance to the
toppled South Vietnamese government, Long Nguyen (Long Nguyen) decides to
remain in Vietnam. Imprisoned in a Communist re-education camp, he urges his
family to make the escape by boat without him. His wife Mai (Diem Lien), son Lai
(Nguyen Thai Nguyen) and mother Ba Noi (Kieu Chinh) then embark on the arduous ocean voyage in the hope of reaching the U.S. and freedom. Back in Vietnam,
Long suffers years of solitary confinement and hard labor, and finally despairs
that his family has perished. But news of their successful resettlement in America
inspires him to make one last desperate attempt to join them.
Made by people who either lived through this chaotic time in Vietnamese history
or whose families did, JOURNEY FROM THE FALL is a sweeping epic that never
loses sight of the human emotions and personal stories that lie at its core. A film
that will provide U.S. audiences with a fresh perspective on a period of world history that has received a one-sided representation in films.
“Dying is easy, comedy is hard, and melodrama is almost impossible. The
writer-director Ham Tran achieves the impossible in JOURNEY FROM THE FALL
… [with] enough shocking tragedies, brazen escapes and crowd-pleasing acts
of defiance to fuel several action-adventure pictures.” – The New York Times
at 7:30
(1981) dir John Carpenter w/Kurt Russell, Harry Dean Stanton,
Adrienne Barbeau, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence [99 min]
In 1998, New York City has been turned into a giant, maximumsecurity prison. Now, Air Force One has crashed inside and the
President (Pleasence) is in grave danger. Only one man, disgraced
war hero Snake Plissken (Russell), can save him. Carpenter and
Russell create one of the great sci-fi anti-heroes with Snake and a
wonderfully dismal vision of the future with this entertaining film.
Double Feature!
at 5:15, 9:45
(1982) dir John Carpenter w/Kurt Russell [109 min]
Carpenter and Russell re-team for this terrific remake of the classic
sci-fi horror tale of a team of isolated Antarctic scientists who run
across a buried UFO and encounter a deadly alien lifeform.
Carpenter doesn’t try to improve upon the original story but ratchets up the tension to an unnerving degree by giving the alien the
ability to take the form of any person (or other living thing) it kills.

VANISHING POINT
at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30
(1971) dir Richard Sarafian w/Barry Newman, Cleavon Little [98 min]
Heavily referenced in Tarantino’s Death Proof, VANISHING POINT
is one of the ultimate hard-driving films. Barry Newman’s
Kowalski makes a bet to deliver a car (a 1970 Dodge Challenger
with a matte white paintjob) from Colorado to California in under
15 hours. Think that might mean exceeding the speed limit a little?

CHILDREN SHOULDN’T
PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS
at 8:00
(1972) dir Bob Clark w/Alan Ormsby, Valerie Mamches, Jeff Gillen,
Anya Ormsby, Paul Cronin, Jane Daly, Seth Sklarey [87 min]
As a tribute to the late, great exploitation director Bob Clark
(Porky’s, A Christmas Story) we bring you this rude, crude and
determinedly silly zombie comedy. Alan is an insufferably pretentious avant-garde theater director who leads his actors to an abandoned island and plots a practical joke that involves a black magic
ritual that, unbeknownst to him, has actually worked. Rejoice as
the irritating characters are devoured by the hungry dead!
SATAN’S CHEERLEADERS Double Feature!
NIGHTMARE CITY
Double Feature!
at 5:30, 9:30
(1981) dir Umberto Lenzi w/Hugo Stiglitz, Laura Trotter [88 min]
Savage zombie attacks ensue as a plane makes an emergency
landing in an unnamed city and the walking dead burst out attacking everything in their path. As the military fights a losing battle
against the zombies that are quickly taking over the city, a reporter
and his wife try to escape. NIGHTMARE CITY is a sensational
zombie flick and a precursor to such urban infestation films as 28
Days Later. (aka CITY OF THE WALKING DEAD)
at 10:00
(1978) dir Greydon Clark w/Kerry Sherman, Hillary Horan, Alisa
Powell, Sherry Marks, John Ireland, Yvonne De Carlo, Sydney
Chaplin, Jack Kruschen, John Carradine [92 min]
Another cheesy horror-comedy hybrid, SATAN’S CHEERLEADERS
is more-or-less what it sounds like – a movie about a bunch of
cheerleaders who are the target of a satanic cult. But with a cast
that includes some cult greats and a raucous sense of humor,
SATAN’S CHEERLEADERS is good, dirty fun for all.

COCKFIGHTER
at 7:30
(1973) dir Monte Hellman w/Warren Oates, Richard B. Shull,
Harry Dean Stanton, Ed Begley Jr., Patricia Pearcy [83 min]
Monte Hellman follows stubborn loner, Warren Oates, who had
been disqualified from receiving a Cockfighter of the Year award.
Oates takes a vow of silence until he wins again, and we follow
him on his lonely odyssey, trying to regain his lost sense of worth
as he partners up with a fast-talking gambler and plans for the
future with his sweetheart. Filmed in Georgia locations (where
cockfighting was reportedly still legal), director Hellman creates an
austere slice-of-life road saga. – The American Cinematheque, LA

spreads the contagion, leaving chaos in her wake as her boyfriend
races against time to find her. One of Cronenberg’s most rip-roaring, rewarding chillers. – The American Cinematheque, LA

Romero’s unnerving portrait of a town infected with a mysterious
manmade virus (codenamed Trixie) that kills some and causes
insanity in others. As if that weren’t bad enough, the military soon
arrives and locks the town down under martial law as they try to
contain the problem. THE CRAZIES accentuates Romero’s skill with
creating tension even with a skimpy budget and non-pro actors.

Gus Van Sant’s
at 5:30, 9:30
(1973) dir Sergio Martino w/Suzy Kendall [89 min]
While Italian psycho-stalker films are only one genre depicted by
Tarantino in Death Proof, TORSO is an exemplary piece of this style
of filmmaking. Innocent Jane is an American exchange student in
Rome during a rash of strangulations… which, understandably,
puts her a little on edge. When Jane and her sexy friends take a
break at a relative’s country villa, the action moves to the Italian
countryside and the girls find themselves even deeper in danger.
THE THING
Inspired by the aesthetics and melodramatic flourishes of silent cinema, Central
European literature and the desolation of his native Winnipeg, Guy Maddin has
fashioned a career like no other. A Super-8-cranking modern-day Eisenstein, filming plots that would make John Waters blush, Maddin embraces a cinema where
expressionism, somnambulism and lurid sexual neuroses unite – and conquer!

TROUBLE IN PARADISE
We’re also pleased to present a panel on May 19 which will bring together academics, critics, programmers and archivists to discuss the recent resurgence of
interest in, as well as the history of, grindhouses and exploitation films.
at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30

Graham, William S. Burroughs [100 min]
at 10:00pm
(2005) dir Van Sant w/Michael Pitt, Lukas Haas, Asia
Argento [97 min]
75th Anniversary!
Inspired by the Rodriguez/Tarantino double-feature now in theaters, the Brattle
brings you a sampler of exploitation films that might have been featured at the
fabled “grindhouses” of yore. For those not in the know, “grindhouse” is the
word given to a certain class of movie theater – particularly prevalent in the late
‘60s through the early ‘80s – that featured nonstop screenings of all different sorts
of cheapo genre films. In the tradition of these cinemas where the projectors were
“grinding” all day and all night, we offer over 20 features – most in double if not
triple features! – that run the gamut from Italian thrillers to micro-budget horror
comedies to what we have begun to refer to as “Southern-Fried Action.” Caution!
These movies were mainly made in poor taste – but most with a sense of fun – so
be warned: blood, guts, nudity, obscenity, and bad prints are the norm here!

THE ODYSSEY
at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (+ Sat & Sun at 1:30); Please note: No 9:30 on July 4!
(2006) dir Guy Maddin w/Sullivan Brown, Maya Lawson, Katherine E. Scharhon,
Gretchen Krich, Todd Moore [95 min]
BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! In which the shocking truth is finally revealed about
young Guy Maddin and his hellish childhood on a remote island, under the hyperwatchful eye of a crazed mother hellbent on restoring her youth and a diabolically
distant scientist-father, proprietors of a mom-and-pop orphanage they surreptitiously operate within the dank confines of the family lighthouse. WATCH! as the
sex instinct grabs hold of young Maddin and his sister! THRILL! as the Mysteries of
the Light House are divined by teen detectives! REEL! at the headstrong invention
and heart-stopping rhythms of the elder Maddin’s heroic silent moviemaking!!
at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30

WELCOME TO THE GRINDHOUSE!
at 8:00pm
A fascinating and exciting experiment in cinema and literature, THE ODYSSEY is
4th in the “Pocket Myths” zine series and is a collaboration between author/editor
Andrea Lawlor and filmmaker Bernadine Mellis. It features work by mostly queer,
trans, and women artists, retelling Homer's ancient epic of Odysseus’ journey
home after the Trojan War. 24 short films each by different groups of artists, tell
the stories in the 24 chapters of Homer's epic in a myriad of film and video formats. The evening will also feature readings and performances by artist and writers involved in the project.
Friday, June 8 – Sunday, June 10
One of the Brattle’s signature series returns to bring us a second chance to see
some acclaimed films that were, perhaps, overlooked during their first appearance in the Boston area. We’re pleased to offer everything from Hollywood productions hobbled by poorly organized publicity campaigns (THE FOUNTAIN,
ZODIAC) to foreign films that were on screen too briefly in town (BAMAKO, DAYS
OF GLORY). In particular, don’t miss the chance to see the astounding Thai film
TEARS OF THE BLACK TIGER on the big screen – this indescribable Technicolored
Far East Western is a must see in the cinema!

BRAND UPON THE BRAIN!
In celebration of the re-release of his first feature film (MALA NOCHE), we offer a
by-no-means-comprehensive survey of the work of Gus Van Sant. Van Sant is one
of the great directors to come out of the 1980s American independent film movement. His breakthrough features DRUGSTORE COWBOY and My Own Private
Idaho are two of the defining works for a whole generation of movie-goers. His
career from that point on is seemingly uneven as it travels from dark-comedic
pulp-fiction (TO DIE FOR) to crowdpleasing Oscar winners (GOOD WILL HUNTING) until it finally lands in his current stage of arty experimentation (LAST
DAYS). But, for all his seeming ups-and-downs, Van Sant is always a deliberate
and inspired craftsman who injects his films, no matter what the subject matter,
with a visual lyricism and beauty that is impossible to dispute.
Please see below for full line-up and schedule for this series.

Sunday, May 13
HAMLET
at 2:00, 7:45
(1946) dir Laurence Olivier w/Olivier [155 min]
After the success of his first Shakesperean film, HENRY V, Olivier
tackled one of the Bard’s most troubled and difficult characters.
His version of Hamlet emphasizes the melancholy in the Dane and
brings to the screen a somber and personal vision of the play.
HENRY V
Double Feature!
at 5:00
(1944) dir Olivier w/Olivier, Leslie Banks, George Robey [137 min]
One of Olivier’s crowning achievements (literally and figuratively),
HENRY V is the story of King Henry’s 15th century military campaign in France. The most artful of propaganda films, Olivier’s version emphasizes the passion of the British soldiers of the past in an
effort to inspire those the present, then deep in World War II.
Monday, May 14
OTHELLO
at 5:30
(1977) dir Mario Bava w/Daria Nicolodi, John Steiner, David
Colin Jr., Ivan Rassimov [93 min]
A mentor for Argento, and many other Italian horror maestros,
was Mario Bava. Here, late in his career, Bava serves up a unnerving ghost story about Dora, a woman with a young son and new
husband who moves back into her old house – the house where
her previous husband supposedly committed suicide. Things go a
little haywire when the son starts acting a little too Oedipal and
nightmarish visions torment Dora. (aka SHOCK)
at 8:00
(1965) dir Olivier, John Dexter (uncredited) w/Olivier, Maggie
Smith, Joyce Redman, Frank Finlay, Derek Jacobi [165 min]
Olivier’s final appearance in a big screen Shakesperean adaptation
comes with this version of the most film noir of Shakespeare’s
plays. Olivier stars as Othello, the Moorish king of Venice, who is
connived into paroxysms of jealousy against his new bride
Desdemona by the efforts of the scheming Iago.
Sunday, May 27
ENTER THE DRAGON
at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30
(1965) dir Otto Preminger w/Olivier, Carol Lynley, Keir Dullea,
Martita Hunt [107 min]
It’s swinging London in the Sixties, and a recently arrived
American woman (Lynley) reports that her daughter has been
snatched from school… only the police can’t find any evidence
that she ever actually existed. With Olivier as the sympathetic
detective who tries to help her. An overlooked gem!
at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30
(1973) dir Robert Clouse w/Bruce Lee, John Saxon, Kien Shih,
Angela Mao, Jim Kelly, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung [99 min]
The grandpappy of all American kung-fu films! Lee is a Shaolin
monk who is coaxed by a British agent to infiltrate a sure-to-bedeadly fighting tournament and uncover a drug smuggling and
white slavery operation. Despite its now familiar plot, the collective
charisma of Lee and his co-stars, let alone the exhilarating fight
scenes staged by Lee, lifts this film above almost all competitors.
Monday, May 28 Double Feature!
WHEN THE SCREAMING STOPS
at 4:00, 7:45
(1973) dir Amando de Ossorio w/Tony Kendall, Helga Liné [80 min]
A perfect example of a traditional legend successfully translated
into a modern horror film, WHEN THE SCREAMING STOPS tells
the mythological story of Lorelei, a water nymph who has been
living in the Rhine for centuries. At certain times, though, she
transforms into a monster and must feed on the hearts of the innocent to maintain her eternal life. It is during one of these feeding
periods that the sexy hunter Sirgurd is enlisted by the nearby girls’
college as their protector. It’s not long before Sirgurd, the school’s
headmistress and Lorelei form a star-crossed love triangle.
REVENGE OF THE PLANET APE
at 5:45, 9:30
(1971) dir Amando de Ossorio w/Lone Fleming, Cesar Burner,
Maria Elena Arpon [86 min]
This was originally a movie about the reanimated corpses of 13th
century Templar Knights terrorizing Portuguese co-eds – but an
ingenious American distributor got his hands on the film and
decided to re-edit it to capitalize on the popularity of the Planet Of
The Apes series. As a result we have this strange hybrid where we
are meant to believe that the zombie Knights are instead zombie
intelligent apes who have been resurrected after thousands of
years. Absurd, gory fun! (aka TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD)
Tuesday, May 29
PARANOIA
at 7:30
(1968) dir Umberto Lenzi w/Carroll Baker, Lou Castel, Colette
Descombes [91 min]
“Love is the tool that strips a jet-set widow bare of her morals and
her millions!” So says the tagline for this Italian shocker starring
one of our favorite unsung actresses. Carroll Baker (Baby Doll) is
an American widow who encounters a handsome stranger looking
for help and ends up inviting him and his ‘sister’ into her villa…
and her bed. Soon, however, she begins to suspect the couple’s
motives and she finds her life in jeopardy.
AUTOPSY
Double Feature!
at 5:30, 9:30
(1975) dir Armando Crispino w/Mimsy Farmer, Barry Primus [85 min]
A med student who works in the morgue and a priest team up to
investigate a series of mysterious deaths that have been blamed
on a heatwave in this bloody giallo. The deaths are being set up to
look like suicides but the priest, whose own sister is a victim,
believes that they are murders. When the student gets a little too
close to the truth she must race against time to unmask the killer
or become a victim herself.

Sunday, May 20
SLEUTH
at 1:30, 6:45
(1972) dir Joseph L. Mankiewicz w/Olivier, Michael Caine, Alec
Cawthorne, John Matthews [138 min]
One of the most surprising and satisfying mystery films of the 70s,
SLEUTH pits the formidable Olivier against the upstart Michael
Caine in a battle of wits. Olivier plays Andrew Wyke, the aging
husband of a woman who is the lover of Milo Tindle (Caine). Wyke
invites Tindle to his country home and proposes a scheme to bilk
the insurance company… but what are his real motives?
MARATHON MAN
Double Feature!
at 4:15, 9:30
(1976) dir John Schlesinger w/Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier,
Roy Scheider, William Devane [125 min]
A classic of 70s paranoid filmmaking, MARATHON MAN stars
Dustin Hoffman as a schlubby grad student who gets in way over
his head with covert government agents and Nazi fugitives. Olivier
plays Szell, the Nazi in question, who is trying to smuggle diamonds out of the US and has a nasty aptitude for torture.
Monday, May 21
REBECCA
at 4:30, 7:00, 9:30
(1940) dir Alfred Hitchcock w/Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George
Sanders, Judith Anderson [130 min]
The mother of all gothic romances, REBECCA stars Olivier as Max
de Winter, a wealthy widower, who falls in love with a naïve young
woman (Fontaine) while still in mourning for his former wife,
Rebecca. The couple marries and returns to Manderlay, his family
estate, but the “second Mrs. De Winter” soon finds that the spirit of
Rebecca still has a strong hold on the house and its residents.

THE ENTERTAINER
at 8:00, 10:00
(1960) dir Tony Richardson w/Olivier, Brenda De Banzie, Roger
Livesey, Joan Plowright, Alan Bates, Albert Finney [96 min]
“In a seedy seaside music hall, Laurence Olivier’s washed-up songand-dance man Archie Rice symbolically stands in for England,
finding solace only with daughter Joan Plowright.” (Film Forum,
NYC) Garnered Olivier his 6th of 10 Oscar nominations.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS
at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30
(1939) dir William Wyler w/Merle Oberon, Olivier, David Niven,
Flora Robson, Geraldine Fitzgerald [103 min]
This definitive version of Emily Bronte’s classic novel is amongst
the most romantic movies of all time. Olivier plays Heathcliff, a
foundling who is raised by the residents of Wuthering Heights and
whose fate becomes entwined with the daughter of the house,
Cathy (Oberon). Characterized by its moody black-and-white style,
WUTHERING HEIGHTS won the great cinematographer Gregg
Toland (Citizen Kane) his only Oscar.

PRINT!
at 4:45, 7:15, 9:45
(1991) dir Zhang Yimou w/Gong Li [125 min]
In 1920s China, Songlian (the incomparable Gong Li)
is forced, after her father’s death, to become the
fourth wife of Master Chen, a wealthy magnate. Each kept in a separate house on the master’s compound, the wives plot against one
another as they vie for their husband’s attentions. Perhaps the
best example of the exquisite cinematography and meticulous storytelling for which director Zhang Yimou is known.
Friday, June 1
JU DOU
at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30
(1990) dir Zhang w/Gong Li, Jia Jin, Wei Li [95 min]
JU DOU tells the story of a young wife (the title character) of a
cruel mill owner in rural China. Intent on producing an heir, but
unwilling to admit his own sexual inadequacy, her husband has
driven two previous wives to their deaths. When she succeeds in
producing an heir, Ju Dou knows she must never tell her husband
the truth: that the father is Tianqing, Jinshan’s nephew.

TO LIVE
at 2:30, 7:00
(1994) dir Zhang w/Gong Li, Ge You, Niu Ben [125 min]
In 1940s China, an inveterate gambler loses everything: his land,
his fortune, and, finally, his wife. Forced to produce puppet shows
in the street to survive, he finds himself rewarded by fate, and the
Communist party. The first of Zhang’s films to examine the scope
of recent history through the personal stories of his characters.
THE ROAD HOME
Double Feature!
at 5:00, 9:30
(1999) dir Zhang w/Zhang Ziyi, Honglei Sun, Hao Zheng [89 min]
Another portrait of modern China as seen through the eyes of individuals, THE ROAD HOME is the story of a young couple and their
courtship as seen in reminiscence by their son. As a young man, the
father comes to a remote village to serve as its schoolmaster and
meets a beautiful young woman determined to grasp her destiny.
Monday, June 4
THE STORY OF QIU JU
at 7:15
(1992) dir Zhang w/Gong Li, Ge Zhijun, Liu Peiqi [100 min]
This satiric parable follows the title character as she moves
upwards through the bureaucracy of the Chinese government,
seeking justice for her husband, who was humiliated by their village chief. A rare comedic turn by this esteemed director.
HAPPY TIMES
Double Feature!
at 5:00, 9:30
(2000) dir Zhang w/Benshan Zhao, Jie Dong, Lifan Dong [102 min]
Verging on screwball comedy, HAPPY TIMES is one of Zhang’s
most lighthearted films. An aging bachelor finds his ‘perfect’ mate
but must come up with the money needed to marry her. As a way
to raise cash, he and his friends remake an abandoned bus over
into a love hotel. This scheme quickly becomes more complicated
as his future bride insists that he give her blind stepdaughter a job.
Tuesday, June 5
RIDING ALONE FOR
THOUSANDS OF MILES
at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30
(2005) dir Zhang w/Ken Takakura [107 min]
A Japanese father whose estranged son has been striken with
cancer travels to a remote region of China to complete his son’s
passion: a film about a legendary folk-opera singer. It’s a simple
premise, but in the hands of this master filmmaker, RIDING
ALONE becomes a poignant evocation of a man discovering himself, his son, and the larger world all at the same time.
Wednesday, June 6
CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER
at 7:00
(2006) dir Zhang w/Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li [114 min]
Zhang’s most recent film is another of his historic action epics, and
it reunites him with his early career muse, Gong Li. There is a distinct air of Shakespearean tragedy about CURSE OF THE GOLDEN
FLOWER with an Emperor (Chow) facing a palace full of secrets, an
unfaithful Empress (Li), and a rebellion at his palace gates.
HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS
Double Feature!
at 4:30, 9:30
(2004) dir Zhang w/Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau, Zhang Ziyi [119 min]
An exemplary action thriller, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS features a love triangle that develops between two rival police officers
and a blind and beautiful suspected member of a rebel faction.
