Fall is finally here! Football (go Bears!), nice weather, glorious colors,
and the library Arts & Crafts Show are in full swing this October! I’ve
been anxiously awaiting to see all of the imaginative items that Mills
County residents will bring in to the display at the library. I hope to
be inspired by paintings, quilts, woodcarvings, and who knows what else we’ll get to display.
Maybe it’ll finally make me go back to the sewing machine and finish a quilt I’ve been working on
for the past few years.
Teresa and Susanna have teamed up to organize the Arts & Crafts show, and have done a
FANTASTIC job! Schools will be involved, there will be FOUR different art demonstrations for
adults, and a two-week window for the public to view the great pieces. How exciting!
Also getting into full swing this October are our Living Literacy Lab programs. Offerings like Digital
Storytime, iPadpalooza, and Teen Video Makers are just a few of the incredible FREE hands-on
technology programs we’ll be offering. The Lab will also be open on Mondays and Tuesdays from
3:30 - 5:00 p.m. for people who want to try out the technology and work on projects.
We hope you can participate in our upcoming programs. We’ve had great success with our
programming this past month. September has brought us record-breaking attendance through the
front doors, and also to our Walking History Tours and our first-ever Between the Wines book
discussion. Glenwood is hopping, and we are so happy to be a part of the momentum!

If you like talking about books, then you need to come to the
Between the Wines book discussion group! Meetings are at the Vine
Street Cellars on the 1st Thursday of each month, from 6 - 7 p.m. The
next meeting is Thursday, October 4. Couples and singles are
encouraged to attend! Just show up to learn about new books, or talk
about the book you’re currently reading. Call Teresa at 712-527-5252
for more information.
The Vine Street Ladies of Literature and Lunch book discussion group
meets on the second Wednesday of the month at noon. The next meeting
is on October 10, and will feature the book Time is a River, by Mary Alice
Monroe. If you would like to participate in the discussion, contact Teresa
at 712-527-5252. Don’t forget to bring your lunch to the meeting! Looking
ahead—the November selection is Light on Snow, by Anita Shreve, and
December is the annual potluck where people bring food to share and talk
about their most recent reads.
We’re once again offering a FREE card making workshop for adults. Join us on Friday, October
12, at 10:00 a.m., as our resident paper-crafter Michelle Woodrum teaches participants how to
make greeting cards and tags with a Halloween and/or Thanksgiving theme. All supplies
provided. Learn the craft, then make and take your very own creation! Registration is not
required for this free event, although seating is limited. Call 712-527-5252 for more info.

TEEN READ WEEK 2012
It’s that time of the year again—TEEN READ WEEK! And this year, we’re having a mini reading
contest! For every book you check out between Monday and Friday, October 15—19, you’ll get
a drawing slip. We’ll pick winners on Saturday, who’ll receive some cool prizes! Plus, check out
our selection of banned books — read the books “they” don’t want you to see! The more you
checkout, the more chances you have to win!
The library’s Teen Advisory Council LURCH (Library-Using Really Cool
Honchos) will meet every Wednesday, September through May, from
3:30 - 4:30, immediately following We Connect Videogaming time.
This informal group meets to help the library purchase materials and
create programs for young adults. It’s also a fun way for teens to
earn volunteer hours!
If you’re a teen and have always wanted to create movies and videos, the Glenwood Public Library has
a program for you! Join the Teen Video Makers group on the 3rd Thursday of each month, now
through May, from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. This program will teach video production basics, how to use a
video camera, editing software, choosing music, and video promotion. Call 712-527-5252 to register.
