location hvdn architecten osdorp canw, amsterdam 58 houses and 41 apartments with parking Osdorp’s town centre is to be renovated and in the coming years it will form the new centre of Amsterdam’s Western Garden City expansions. The development will commence with the construction of an open, transparent block in the ‘SUHA’ neighbourhood while, simultaneously, the adjacent Nieuwe Gracht Zuid project will start. The latter comprises a quiet residential environment that links the new town centre to the existing garden city structure. This first phase entails the construction of 235 apartments and 22 single-family houses, designed by five different architects. transparency hvdn architecten The Wibohuis is part of the block in the ‘SUHA’ neighbourhood. In order to generate an open and friendly atmosphere, it was decided to open the building’s ground floor. By making the base transparent and doubling its height, views are created towards the sunny communal garden located behind the building. Family housing, a community space and a large crèche add further to the open and lively environment. A four-bay brick finished structure above the plinth houses 40 WiBo units (housing in a controlled environment) for the elderly. incisions hvdn architecten The design for De Nieuwe Gracht Zuid comprises a series of three low-rise blocks. Each block consists of two linear volumes terminated by a taller apartment building, all above a half-underground garage. The blocks are designed by two architectural practices with the form and external materialisation being predetermined. The apartment building will be designed by EN architects with hvdn completing the ground-connected housing and the garage. The incisions into the block are articulated by turning the yellow brickwork back-to-front and exposing its white colour. A communal garden above the garage separates the two rows of private gardens and reduces the often untidy visual impact of the garden fencing. By adopting a similar form to the existing structures, the new buildings attach themselves seamlessly to the existing garden city layout. project information osdorp canw, amsterdam address: hoekenespad, v. suchtelen v.d. haarestraat extra function: coordinating architect for the Nieuwe Gracht Zuid development design team: albert herder, arie van der neut, sabine heine, dirk schlebusch project team: albert herder, sabine heine, ard hoksbergen client: far west / de principaal amsterdam design-completion: 2005building costs: € 10.500.000 hvdn architecten krelis louwenstraat 1 B28 1055 ka amsterdam t +31(0)20 688 5025 f +31(0)20 688 4793 www.hvdn.nl [email protected]
