Introduction The Township is made up of over 10,000 residents in rural areas and spread across numerous historic and culture-rich communities of varying sizes. These communities include: Alexandria Dominionville Glen Sandfield Lorne Apple Hill Dornie Greenfield Maxville Athol Dunvegan Guaytown McCormick Baltic's Corners Fairview Kirkhill McCrimmon Breadalbane Fassifern Laggan Pine Grove Brodie Fiskes Corners Lochiel St. Elmo Dalkeith Glen Robertson Lochinvar Stewarts Glen The current Township of North Glengarry was created in January 1998 by amalgamating the former townships of Kenyon and Lochiel with the villages of Maxville and Alexandria. The township is the industrial and commercial hub of the area with large industries like Alexandria Moulding, MacEwen Petroleum and Farley Windows. In addition to those industrial jobs are countless farms that span the township, providing numerous agricultural jobs and the Glengarry Memorial Hospital in Alexandria. Alexandria is also the retail hub for the outlying areas, with significant growth and investment in the last 24 months. Some of that investment includes a new Shoppers Drug Mart, Tim Horton's, Home Hardware and Jean Coutu pharmacy. Township of North Glengarry 4 www.northglengarry.ca North Glengarry Community Profile Location The municipality of North Glengarry is located in eastern Ontario, roughly half way between Ottawa and Montreal, just south of the Highway 417 that links those two major urban centres. North Glengarry is one of the 6 townships in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, located just north of the City of Cornwall. The Township of North Glengarry traces its rich historical roots to the second half of the 18th Century. The area was first settled by Scottish Highlanders who emigrated from Scotland and later Loyalists who fled the American Revolution. French Canadian farmers entered the mix and both Canada's founding cultures are seen and heard all over the township. Presently, the focus of health care became one of prevention by promoting healthy life styles and community care. The Hospital sought to be pro-active in this new way of thinking. The Rehabilitation and Health Promotion Pool was opened in 2001 and the Physiotherapy Department was re-located next to the new pool. The Community Care Access Centre site office of Alexandria re-located to the other portion of the former Chronic Care Unit to improve health care integration. In 2010, cardiac stress testing and cardiac ultrasound were added and in 2013, the pulmonary function test laboratory was added.
