The current Township of North Glengarry was
created in January 1998 by amalgamating the
former townships of Kenyon and Lochiel with
the villages of Maxville and Alexandria.
The township is the industrial and commercial
hub of the area with large industries like
Alexandria Moulding, MacEwen Petroleum
and Farley Windows. In addition to those
industrial jobs are countless farms that span
the township, providing numerous agricultural
jobs and the Glengarry Memorial Hospital in
Alexandria. Alexandria is also the retail hub for the outlying areas, with significant growth and
investment in the last 24 months. Some of that investment includes a new Shoppers Drug Mart,
Tim Horton's, Home Hardware and Jean Coutu pharmacy.

Location
The municipality of North Glengarry is located in eastern Ontario, roughly half way between
Ottawa and Montreal, just south of the Highway 417 that links those two major urban centres.
North Glengarry is one of the 6 townships in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and
Glengarry, located just north of the City of Cornwall. The Township of North Glengarry traces its
rich historical roots to the second half of the 18th Century. The area was first settled by Scottish
Highlanders who emigrated from Scotland and later Loyalists who fled the American Revolution.
French Canadian farmers entered the mix and both Canada's founding cultures are seen and
heard all over the township.

1
Refers to the relationship between a person's usual place of residence on Census Day and his or her usual place of residence one
year earlier. A person is classified as a non-mover if no difference exists. Otherwise, a person is classified as a mover and this
categorization is called Mobility status (1 year ago). Within the category of movers, a further distinction is made between nonmigrants and migrants; this difference is called migration status.
2
Non-movers are persons who, on Census Day, were living at the same address as the one at which they resided one year earlier.
3
Movers are persons who, on Census Day, were living at a different address from the one at which they resided one year earlier.
Non-migrants are movers who, on Census Day, were living at a different address, but in the same census subdivision (CSD) as the
one they lived in one year earlier.
5
Migrants are movers who, on Census Day, were residing in a different CSD one year earlier (internal migrants) or who were living
outside Canada one year earlier (external migrants).

Since its inception in 1961, and its grand opening in 1965, Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital
(HGMH) has been a valued institution in Alexandria, as well as being a staple to the entirety of
Glengarry County. Presently, the focus of health care became one of prevention by promoting
healthy life styles and community care. The Hospital sought to be pro-active in this new way of
thinking. The Rehabilitation and Health Promotion Pool was opened in 2001 and the
Physiotherapy Department was re-located next to the new pool. The Community Care Access
Centre site office of Alexandria re-located to the other portion of the former Chronic Care Unit
to improve health care integration. In 2010, cardiac stress testing and cardiac ultrasound were
added and in 2013, the pulmonary function test laboratory was added.
