JULY 2014
A
s anticipated, June turned out to be a busy month
for RMR members with events held locally as well
as the huge attendance at the Porsche Parade
held in Monterey, California. A special thanks to
Stevinson Porsche for hosting our membership
social to get the June events under way. Ladies’
Day has always been one of my favorite events of the year to
attend and instruct. This year was no exception and the team
of event chairs and volunteers did a fantastic job. No fawns
were born at the event this year but there certainly was an
abundance of smiles from new (and more seasoned) women
participants who thoroughly enjoyed their newfound
driving skills and a track day of their own! Thanks to event
chairs Karen Harrison and Kathy Fricke, CDI’s Adele Arakawa
and Vicki Earnshaw, plus the Instructors and Volunteers that
made this all possible. Somehow the team even managed a
change in weather and no rain was permitted on track.
The day after Ladies’ Day, the 31st annual Concours
d’Elegance was held at the Arapahoe Community College.
The Concours d’Elegance has been a longtime benefactor of
the RMR Community in the form of monetary donations,
loaned equipment, insurance, and volunteer workers for the
event. The event raises funds for Cerebral Palsy of Colorado
and Creative Options Child Early Educations Services. Jerry
Medina was the lead this year for RMR and was responsible
for many aspects of the event. Be sure to thank Jerry for his
efforts as your ambassador to this event. Thanks Jerry!
As many were headed out to Monterey for Porsche Parade,
RMR also held a driving tour to Steamboat Springs with
lunch at the Fiesta Jalisco Steamboat. A couple of pictures
were posted of the event with comments that the drive was
fun and the weather cooperated on the way out. However,
a bit of snow was reported on the way back. Got to love the
spring weather in Colorado! Thanks again to Erik Behrendsen
and the volunteers for the organization of this drive.
The June DE at HPR was chaired by Gregg Bell, Rob
Lorenz, and Jim Thorburn. Thanks to Gregg, Rob, and Jim
for putting together a great event and a steak dinner for the
participants on Saturday. The turnout of new drivers was
fantastic and posed a challenge in finding enough driving
instructors for Doug Bartlett as CDI for the event. Thanks to
all the driving instructors and volunteers that came out and
made this event possible.
The full summer schedule of RMR events is now well
under way. July starts off with a Membership Social “The
Largest Gathering of Porsches” at Steel Affairs in Arvada and
another later in the month hosted by Poudre Sports Cars in
Ft Collins. In August we will be hosted by Wine Country
Motorsports in Englewood. Gavin Yuill and Dave Buehmann
are teaming up to chair the Summer Speed Driver Education
event at HPR in July. In August, RMR hosts our PCA Club
Race at HPR along with the Rolling Thunder Solo DE, which
4
Presidential thoughts
Jim Widrig, President
are being planned and organized by Brian Leary and his
team. Later in August, RMR is back out autocrossing at Front
Range Airport for the Flying Cones Autocross event chaired
by Jon Barr and Carl Boecher. Driving tours will go to the
Stanley Hotel in Estes Park in July and the Triple ByPass Tour
late in August. Be sure to check the articles in HighGear, the
RMR website, and FaceBook pages for the latest information.
Based upon the registrations list in the Parade program
book and the members I ran into, close to 60 RMR members
made the trip to Monterey, California to participate. The
events kicked off with the Welcome Banquet at the Customs
House Plaza on Monterey Bay on Sunday. Under a cloak of
secrecy, clouds, and a black cover, the first 2014 Porsche
Boxster GTS in North America was unveiled to the PCA
attendees by Manny Alban and Hans-Peter Porsche. The PCA
Concours d’Elegance and historic car display was held on
Monday morning on the 17th and 18th fairways of the Del
Monte Golf course at the Hyatt Regency Monterey. After an
overcast morning typical of the coast, the sun came out and
the polished Porsche cars shined! The RMR contingency did
very well and brought home several awards for their efforts,
waxing, polishing and cleaning well into the wee hours of
Monday morning! Congratulations to Thomas Lutz, Tom
and Valarie Conway, Kathy and Walt Fricke, Jim Osgood,
Dave and Bette Seeland, and Mel Shapiro. RMR members
participated in a variety of events during the week and were
spotted participating in the TSD Rally on Tuesday, Autocross
on Wednesday and Thursday, Wine and Beer Tastings, Ice
Cream Social, plus an assortment of wonderful tours to
renowned destinations including Big Sur, Hearst Castle,
Canepa Motorsports, and James Dean’s last drive. The local
region hosted a DE on Saturday and Sunday at Laguna Seca
Raceway, which expectedly sold out. A full recap of the
concours, driving events, and national awards should be on
the PCA website soon. Next years’ Porsche Parade is being
held in French Lick, Indiana, which will offer a shorter drive
for those coming from Denver. 2016 is rumored to be in
northern Vermont.
Last month I closed my monthly article with a brief
recognition and thanks to the Charity Committee and RMR
Community for their fund–raising efforts and donations
throughout the year. Early this year, the RMR Board submitted
a summary of the community service contributions to
PCA National with hopes that we would receive national
recognition. The Porsche Parade week culminates with the
presentation of the National Awards at the final Parade
event, the Victory Banquet on Saturday evening. This year
the Rocky Mountain Region proudly claimed the First Place
2014 National Public Service Award! Thanks again to you,
the RMR Community, for supporting the Charity Committee
and the RMR community service projects. These in turn
benefit many individuals in our community. Be proud of this
award and the national recognition which comes with it!

ids and dogs. Children and canines.
That’s what I’m after, folks,
and I need your help
for some upcoming
issues.
I want to do a complimentary
image-story featuring the artwork
of RMR kids (and/or grandkids) to
go along with an upcoming article about
the 8th Annual Drive for the Kids charity tour being
held on Sept. 20th and put on by our own Andy Forberg
and Al Woodward (see page 20). Of course, I don’t want
three-headed dragons nor Disney characters. I want to
do a double-page spread, if at all possible, featuring the
renderings of Porsches from RMR children under the age
of 12. They can be drawn with crayons, markers, pencil
or chalk. I don’t really care. I would love to see my email
loaded down with adorable drawings from RMR’s most
adorable, if auxillary, members. So please assign a fun little
homework assignment to the little ones in your lives, scan
their stuff, and email them to me at [email protected].
I’ll make them famous, briefly.
I’m trying to do the same
thing with a tie-in article to
compliment the recap story I will
do about the Gimmick Rally held
on June 28th with all proceeds
going to Freedom Service Dogs.
I saw a newsletter another PCA
region did last year and in it was
a lovable article titled “Porsches
and Pooches,” a title I plan on
shamelessly stealing. I’ve already gotten a
few submissions from RMR members
featuring their dogs in, on, or near
their beloved Porsches, but I need
more. So, please snap a photo of
your four-legged family friend with
your Porsche and send it in (my email
hasn’t changed since you read that last
paragraph: [email protected]).
Lastly, I want to bring some extra attention to a couple
events happening on the other side of those mountains
that divide our continent. First, Grand Junction is holding
their annual massive car show called the Western Colorado
Classic (page 37) of Aug. 30-31. We’ve heard from our
membership survey that we don’t do much on the western
slope. Well, here’s our opportunity. It’s a classy show, well
attended, and, if you didn’t know, there are plenty of
wineries surrounding Grand Junction that are just ripe for
the picking. Pun intended.
Also, the Vail Automotive Classic (page 17) is being
held Sept. 5-7, and it too sounds like a spectacular event.
They are featuring Porsche as the
marque of the show and RMR really
needs to step up to represent that
car-maker that we hold so dear. I
think it would be great if a bunch of
our members with some really nice
show-quality cars rallied to go up to
Vail and take over this prestigious
show with some really nice German
vehicles. This seems like the perfect
place to showcase the perfect car.

ummer time and what fun were are having!
Ladies’ Day was a big success; the weather held off and
everyone had a great time. Thanks to our Ladies’ Day
Event Chairs (Kathy Fricke and Karen Harrison) and
all our sponsors (Dan Fead, Dr. Lisa Hunsicker, Hank
Padilla) and all of our volunteers (driving instructors,
control, and corner workers) as this event benefits the CSP
Family Foundation.
With so many July events coming up, it’s time to get out
there and have some fun: 1. The Largest Gathering of Porsches
on 7/10 at Steel Affairs Automotive in Arvada, 2. The Northern
Membership Social event at Poudre Sports Car in Ft Collins on
7/12 starting at 10:30 a.m. (Note: there will be live music, food,
refreshments and a host of exotic cars on display. This event
had over 200 members in attendance last year, so don’t miss
out on a great drive north and a fun day with friends and cars),
3. RMR HPR DE 7/19 & 7/20, 4. The Peak-to-Peak Drive/Tour
and brunch to the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, 5. RMR HPR DE
8/16 & 8/17.
AMR (Alpine Mountain Region) has two events coming up:
the Wounded Warrior Car Show on 7/13 and the Cayenne Tour
on 7/12 both in Colorado Springs.
Want to see crazy racing? HPR’s 2014 Chump car race is on
7/26 & 7/27 and is a great event. Now, this is definitely not your
average HPR Club Race–it has crazy cars and crazy rules, and for
your enjoyment, a few modified (like a parade float) Porsches.
So get out there and enjoy your cars: drive, socialize and take
part in the Colorado Porsche lifestyle!
P.S. Send us photos and write-ups of your event and we will
put them here!

JULY 2014
11
Dateline: June 7, 2014. O dark hundred. HPR.
Well before dawn, Scott Durham had Spec Boxster #482 up on blocks, bleeding the brakes. Crew Chief
Dan Mayer was strategizing and encouraging his drivers to drink water and prepare mentally for the long 12hour driving day ahead. The event? The inaugural World Racing League’s 12-hour enduro at High Plains
Raceway on June 7. This new enduro series is for experienced racers and advanced solo DE drivers alike. A no
contact event, it attracts Porsches and BMWs, as well as Chumpcar and LeMons cars, for a 12-hour enduro.
Story by Bill Kubilus, photos by Ryan Faufau
Last winter, Chris Cervelli of Cervelli Technical Service
(CTS) created #482, turning it from a basic street car to a
slippery fast Spec Boxster. Chris mentioned the race to
some of his friends and clients: Bill Kubilus (996 GT3),
John Sellinger (996 Turbo) and EJ Bennett (968). #482 is
a rental car, and this seemed a perfect venue to rent it for!
Chris has lots of professional and amateur race experience,
which was critical, since we’re all DE drivers who’d never
raced cars wheel to wheel in our lives. A flurry of acquiring
gear and car prepping ensued (Nomex socks, anyone?).
Scott Durham (Cayman R) created a near-flawless refueling
system, and Friday June 6 saw the entire team out at HPR
learning to drive the car, practicing driver changes with a
stopwatch and being impressed with Scott’s fuel delivery.
Eight hours and a few spins later (no names mentioned) our
team was ready and excited for the next day.
12 Twenty-one cars entered the race, including two Spec
Boxsters owned by Poudre Motorsports and a Spec Boxster
from California, as well as several BMWs, a modified Miata
that won its class at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, and an
improbable V8-powered 944. The cars were divided into
4 classes, and with our car running Spec Boxster series
tires, we were moved into the “Unlimited” class, while the
other Boxsters ran harder street tires, putting them in the
“GP 1” class. Dan Mayer (SP2 944 Club Racer), our crew
chief, devised our high tech communications system: an
enormous leaf rake covered with a day-glo green T-shirt,
that could be waved over the wall to attract a driver’s
attention, and a board that said, “PIT NOW.” It turned out
to be all that we needed.
Chris started the race at a blistering 2:03 pace, causing
Dan chest pain as he watched tires that needed to last
hundreds of miles getting smoked. After some stern dayglo green rake communication, Chris settled down to a 2:07
pace, and the race strategizing
began in earnest. Our closest
competitor was the Thunderhill
Miata, and with their drivers
doing two-hour stints, we quickly
realized that, although our car
was faster, the more frequent
driver changes were eating up
our lead. So, Bill Kubilus and
John Sellinger took some extra long stints, and were able
to maintain the hot pace Chris had set. EJ kept pace with
the Miata, and tried to absorb all the new stuff (three cars
wide thru turn one – who knew?!). At the 8-hour mark,
we were ready to change tires and cruise to victory. Or not.
A nut on the right front wheel was impossibly jammed.
After wasting valuable minutes in the pit trying to loosen
it, we had no choice but to keep the right front tire on and
change out the remaining three. John got the enviable job
of taking out a race car with three
stone cold tires and one very hot,
used tire onto the track.
As the final lap approached,
all the remaining drivers and
crew assembled on the front
straight wall to cheer on the
finishing cars, which by then had
headlights on. If our stuck right
front tire went flat, the Thunderhill Miata would win. The
Miata pitted for fuel, and the miracle tire held out. On the
last lap, CTS #482 caught the checkered flag, finishing first
overall, and completing exactly 800 miles and 316 laps.
Nineteen cars finished the race, but no crew was happier
than ours. Three novice race car drivers, two stalwart pit
crew (aided by Rich Minkler) and one pro driver car owner
had won the unlimited class, and the overall race, at the
inaugural World Racing League enduro at HPR.
The Cervelli Technical Services Spec Boxster
(above) won the inaugural World Racing League
event at HPR last month. This grueling endurance
race was driven by four RMR PCA members
(pictured at left, in order): John Sellinger, Chris
Cervelli, EJ Bennet, and William Kubilus. The
race was 12 hours long and the Cervelli Boxster
covered 316 laps (a little over 805 miles). The car
won the unlimited as well as the overall race.

Gunnison Car Show, Aug. 15-17
By John Duclos
And now for something completely different (apologies to Monty Python) ...
The Gunnison Car Club is sponsoring its 27th annual car show in downtown
Gunnison on Aug. 15-17.
This is not your average cars and coffee get together, but rather a threeday celebration of the car culture. Everything starts on Friday night,
Aug. 15, with a cruise-in on the closed-off Main-Street. It’s a real festival
atmosphere with a ‘50’s rockabilly band (the RevTones) playing all evening
and all the local folks coming out to check out the cars and chat with their
owners.
Saturday is the main event, a car show, with “peoples choice” judging of
about 250-300 cars of all types, ranging from hot rods and customs, to rat rods and sports cars, and yes, even some Porsches.
Last year we had eight Porsches from both the Western Slope and Front Range areas, and we’re hoping for a lot more this year.
On Sunday morning, we’re planning on a Porsche-only breakfast and mini-run to an as-yet undisclosed location. We’d like to
see a good showing of the Western Slope AMR and RMR members come out for a really fun weekend.
Details available at gunnisoncarclub.com or contact AMR member Gary Shondeck at [email protected]. More info to
follow as August approaches. Please note that this is not a PCA-AMR event, but come on out anyway.

Story and photos by D. Terry Rawls, owner
“You need to get a car with anti-lock
brakes and airbags.”
That refrain
started in 2007, after we moved from
rural Michigan to inside-the-beltway
Washington D.C. In D.C. I’d see more
cars on the first half of my three mile
commute than I’d see in a whole week
in Michigan, so I suspected she was on
to something. But my beloved Saab
was, after all, possibly the safest car on
the road when it was new . . . in 1989.
“You need to get a car with antilock brakes and airbags.” Yeah, but
you know that I know every square
inch of the Saab, and with all the
upgrades I’ve done I can drive away
from most threats. Like a lot of people
that will read this, growing up in the
60’s I was always out of step because I’d
rather drive a Triumph or VW than a
Mustang or HemiCuda. A succession
of very inexpensive cars (1954 Chevy,
1965 VW camper, 1962 Rambler)
during high school ended with a
$750 1968 Saab 96 Deluxe. That car
took me through college, my first job,
and my first graduate degree, so you
can understand my fondness for the
marque.
The 1980s were kind of interesting.
I graduated from fixing up Bugs for extra
16
spending money to restoring a 1955
Triumph TR-2 out in a leaky garage,
and I scored a very nice ‘83 Volvo 245
GLT with a 5-speed. But by the time
the kids came along mid-decade it was
time for a string of “practical” modes
of transportation. A professor’s salary
only goes so far, you know.
“You need to get a car with antilock brakes and airbags.” Done with
being a professor, in 2006 we left the
kids in colleges in Michigan and moved
to Washington D.C. to do a startup.
That’s when the refrain started, but I
was having too much fun taking the
turbo-Saab out on those wonderful
Virginia blacktop roads!
Besides,
despite the density of the traffic I’d had
no accidents or even close calls. Who’s
going to hit a classic Saab?
You may or may
not know this, but
not all startups
are
successful,
and it turned out
I’d picked the
wrong kind when
we moved to D.C.
Things,
however,
worked out and my
next position landed
us in Denver, a place where I had
wanted to live since passing through
back in my college years. Now, if you
haven’t spent time in D.C., you’re
probably inclined to believe that my
wife could cease her refrain once we
landed in Denver. After all, Denver
is less dense, with big open highways
(except, of course, at rush hour), and
lots of room to roam, so it must be a
safer place to drive, right?
Wrong!
“You need to get a car with antilock brakes and airbags.” After our first
year in Denver the refrain was coming
more frequently, usually immediately
following my relating the latest saga
of a driver taking a left turn out of a
right turn lane, or cutting me off in
some creative new way. Our theory is
that Denver drivers can get away with
things that D.C. drivers know they
cannot do, so we get a little sloppy, I
suppose.
“You need to get a car with antilock brakes and airbags.” It wasn’t
that she wore me down, it’s that she
was finally right. And having finally
admitted that, I had the challenge of
deciding what to get to replace the
old Saab. We do a lot of hiking on
weekends and occasionally tour one
part of the country or another, so what
better car than a car with two trunks
and, of course, anti-lock brakes and
airbags!
And now you know how I came to
own a Porsche Boxster.
Epilog: I listed the Saab with
AutoTrader, got zero calls, sold it a
few weeks later to a neighbor and a
few weeks after that was informed by
AutoTrader that I had won a $1,000
drawing. Thanks, old Saab. I hope the
neighbor is taking good care
of you.

We have changed things up a bit this year! The tour is later and plans are
unfolding for an enjoyable one-day event Saturday, Sept. 20. We will launch
with brunch from west of Denver for a drive that takes in the stunning Colorado
fall colors.
As the day progresses, there will be much anticipation as we return to the
DTC Hilton Garden Inn evening event. The Denver Round Table, along with Rocky
Mountain Region Porsche Club of America and Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club,
will be hosting the 8th annual DRIVE FOR THE KIDS. Our amazing Car Tour
sponsors and participants have helped us raise over $130,000 for the Colorado
Sports Program, providing year-round recreational programs for children with
physical disabilities.
To all our friends, flexibility, participation, and your help are the keys to the
success of this worthy event. We respectfully ask that if you cannot make the
drive, plan to join us for a fun evening event including cocktails and dinner, replete
with a silent and live auction. Whether you join us for the day or the evening, or
even if you have a scheduling conflict, we ask each of you–our supporters and
friends–to seriously consider a sponsorship or helping us procure an abundance
of tax-deductible donated auction items.
For those of you who have participated in previous years, you know the
overwhelming feeling of satisfaction that participation in this event brings to
your heart. If this will be your first year, enjoy the drive in your old, classic, or
new sports or family car for pure enjoyment, while greatly benefiting children.
Look for details and a flyer in the near future. Mark your calendars now to
keep this date open to join us.
Two options are available. You may participate in the full tour that takes a
drive in the beautiful vistas of Colorado, returning to Denver in late afternoon
to start an amazing evening of great food, drink, special events and lively
conversation. If that does not meet your schedule, then we will also offer a
package for dinner and evening events only. Spend the night if you wish. Either
way you will have a great time and help the kids. For more information, to
request extra flyers, or add friends’ names to our mailing list, please call Andy

Ladies’ Day
22
Through the Rearview Mirror
‘14
by Karen Harrison
Photos by Max Gerson
Once again the final checkered flag has been thrown for PCA-RMR’s annual Ladies’ Day, which took place Saturday, June 7th. We were
pleased to have 62 drivers with an impressive 36 NEW drivers being introduced to the track! What an amazing group of women—one of
whom had given birth 6 weeks earlier! No, we cannot claim the child to be a future participant for Ladies’ Day, but we’d happily welcome
him to be an instructor-participant! Congratulations to Katie and her beautiful newborn son on both achievements.
While weather was feared to be a factor, we managed to run the entire event without a single drop of rain. Gauging the “smiles per
hour” I witnessed throughout the day in the paddock, my radar says it was close to “red-lining” most of the day. As a whole, the event was
seamless with few incidents. An unfortunate oil situation had us finish up a bit earlier than planned, but the Ladies graciously rolled with
that with ease and understanding.
The charity our event chose to benefit was the Colorado State Patrol Family Foundation, which helps the families of fallen State
Troopers. Through noontime parade rides and various donations, we were happy to present the foundation with a check for $1355. Thank
you, everyone, for your participation and generous donations.
A big THANK YOU once again to our sponsors Dan Fead of Fuller/Southeby’s Realty, Dr. Lisa Hunsicker of Revalla Plastic Surgery and
Medical Aesthetics, and Hank Padilla with Hanksville Hot Rods/Jennifer Padilla of Arbonne Health and Beauty Products.
Well done, Ladies! We are looking forward to seeing many of you again at a future PCA DE, as well as next year’s Ladies’ Day.

Continental Divide Tour—August 8-10, 2014
Sponsored by Winding Road Adventures
In Colorado, we have some of the best Porsche roads in the
world. One of the great thrills of driving in this great state is crossing
the Continental Divide. Have you ever wondered how many times it’s
possible to cross the divide on paved roads? Join us, and embark on
an adventure intended to answer that question. This will be the first
of a series of three tours over coming years, specifically designed to
traverse every paved crossing in the State. The tour spans three days,
and it will involve you and your Porsche friends experiencing some of
the best roads and scenery in Colorado. Note that we have a limited
number of cars that we can accept, because of limits on lodging and
restaurants along the way. Add to this the fact that our tours tend to
sell out quickly, so it would be wise to register as soon as you can. We
hope you can join us for this long weekend of fun with great roads,
great cars, and great friends.
Registration Opens/Closes: April 1 / July 1, Cost: $250 per couple
Included: Tour instructions, many meals, goodies, and more

Bob Dent, 1946-2014
Born in Great Falls, Montana, in 1946, Bob passed away on
June 16th. He graduated from high school in Great Falls
and went on to the University of Montana, earning a degree
in fisheries biology. His career started with the Montana
Fish and Game Department in Anaconda, Montana, then
he moved on to the Anaconda Mining Company in Butte,
working on water-quality issues. When he moved to Butte,
he settled in an apartment across the hall from Pat, and the
rest is history!
When Atlantic Richfield purchased Anaconda in the
late 1970s, their corporate offices moved to Denver, as did
Bob and Pat. Bob’s work with ARCO primarily involved
environmental issues, mitigating hazardous-waste sites. He
was able to take an early retirement in 1994 and enjoy life,
which he did.
Bob and Pat had joined PCA in 1988 with a black 924
that they brought from Butte. After attending a driver ed
event as spectators, they were hooked. They bought a 914
for track events then added the white 1987 911 “turbolook” coupe that won all sorts of concours events, including
several best of show awards. When they outgrew the 914,
they bought a green 1967 911S and began wheel-to-wheel
racing with Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing. Bob and Pat
both had great fun with that car.
With PCA, Bob competed in driver ed events and Club
Racing. He and Pat chaired the Cerebral Palsy concours
several times, chaired a track event in Aspen, volunteered
at the 1988 Parade in Colorado Springs, and worked on
many rallies (according to Pat, it was much better for them
to work than participate). Bob also served as a driving
instructor with RMR and chaired a weekend tour through
the high country. He also traveled with the 3R Racing
team, assisting them at events across the U.S. Basically. he
was there for whatever needed to be done. He was blessed
to have been a part of RMR and was thankful for the good
friends accumulated over the years. He appreciated all of
you.
Pat can be reached at 854 Aster Way, Golden, CO 80401;

Grady Clay, 1943-2014
Born May 6, 1943, in Louisville, Kentucky, Grady Edward
Clay III came to Denver in about 1970. He had a “hobby
shop” for Porsches just off Santa Fe, then started a bigger
shop, Rennenhaus, at 320 Broadway. It was always the place
to have your 356 or 911 worked on. Grady successfully
raced a Formula Vee, an RS60, and a 914-6 in SCCA and
drove his maroon ‘68 911 coupe, which he bought new, in
RMR events. At one time he owned Bill and Patsy Randle’s
904 and several other 1960s collectable Porsches. As a
regular Parade entrant, he won the 911 tech quiz numerous
times, helped to stage a few quizzes, and was always present
at tech gatherings. Rennenhaus hosted annual “movie
nights” at the shop, wherein we would watch the movie “Le
Mans” with the volume at appropriate levels. His driving
career peaked in the 1970s when he shared a Garretson 935
at Sebring. At one time or another, almost every Porsche
mechanic in Denver worked with Grady. His shop closed
years ago after a fire, and Grady became a teaching assistant
in the Cherry Creek schools.
In 1978, Grady met Karin Hostetter and her 4-year
old son, Christopher. They found many ways to explore
Colorado with travel and hiking and raising Christopher.
By the time Christopher was 9, Grady had passed his racing
passion down, and every weekend found them at go-kart
races. This interest continued and grew to full-sized cars
until Chris headed off to college.
Grady’s two passions for the last 10 years remained-racing and mentoring promising but struggling students.
He was the 911 technical guru on the Pelican forum,
helping people around the world with information and
sage advice. Grady also devoted his time and resources to
help students struggling in math, science, and literacy to
succeed in school and set their sights on college. He never
tired of opening the world to young minds.
Memorial donations may be made to Summer
Scholars, 3401 Quebec St. #5010, Denver CO 80207 (www.
summerscholars.org). Cards for the family and inquiries
can be directed to Karin Hostetter, 3967 S. Truckee St.,

“La Hunting Another Perfect Apex”
DE at La Junta, October 4th & 5th
We had so much fun at the Spring
La Junta Driver Education that we’ve
decided to do again it again this fall.
However, there is a catch! In order to
make this event happen, we will need
to get a minimum of 20 cars signed up.
We think we can double that number,
so your mission, should you decide
to accept it, is to help us make that
happen by registering ASAP. You will
not be charged until at least a month
before the event and only if the event
is a go. If we don’t get enough cars, we
will have to cancel.
The La Junta DE is low-key and it’s a great place to start
out if you’re a novice! It’s also calling those of you who
have been there before as you get to attempt to beat your
fastest times. Everyone is out to have fun in a relaxed and
safe environment.
As usual, we will meet at a local hang-out on Friday
evening, October 3rd, at 6:00 p.m. We will enjoy great food
and cold beer as our CDI (Chief Driving Instructor) leads
us through Ground School. This presentation is a good
refresher for veterans and mandatory for first-timers.
On Saturday, the gates open at
7:00 a.m. Coffee and breakfast snacks
will be available during registration.
Your registration fee even includes a
commemorative t-shirt! A mandatory
drivers meeting for all participants is at
8:00 AM.
Dinner on Saturday night is part
of your registration as we head back
to one of our favorite “colorful”
restaurants, Mexico City Café! We pay
for dinner and soft drinks; you pay for
beer and margaritas.
This is AMR’s 39th year at the La Junta Raceway. We’d
love to have you participate in our final Southern Colorado
DE event of the season!
DE COST:
2 Days: $185 (plus $165 for co-drivers)
1 Day: $125(plus $105 for co-drivers)

appy summer, Zone 9 members!
The months of May and early June were
busy for me, and I hope all of you were busy,
also, with PCA activities! Around the middle
of May, I traveled to Lubbock, TX, and joined
the West Texas Region members for a Show ‘N’ Shine and
fun luncheon at the Cattle Baron. Park Place Porsche from
Dallas brought a car transporter full of Porsches for sale,
and people signed up for test drives. This was a long way
from Dallas, and everyone appreciated the support and
efforts from the dealership. There were over 51 Porsches in
attendance and most of them were entered into the Show
‘N’ Shine. My car wasn’t really a contender—forgot to wash
the bugs off the headlights—but the winners were rewarded
for their fine efforts. Another great accomplishment from
this event was the attraction of new members to PCA.
A couple of weeks later, I accompanied PCA National
Safety Chair Jo Martin on a trip to central New York for
the “Clash at the Glen” PCA Club Race at Watkins Glen.
It took us all day to fly from Albuquerque to Elmira, NY,
but it was well worth the trip. When we got to Montour
Falls, just a few miles from the track, we joined everyone
for a delicious buffet and got the game plan for the next
day. Jo planned to shadow PCA Club Racing Chair Bryan
Henderson, and my plan was to watch the racing action
and help out wherever needed.
There were 285 drivers signed up for the weekend, and
things got started early, with a worker meeting at 7:15. After
the drivers’ meeting, the first group started out on the track
at 8:30. From there, everything worked like clockwork and
the various groups got out for their race sessions. Zone
1 Rep Jennifer Webb and Zone 11 Rep Aaron Ambrosino,
along with about 60 volunteers, worked very hard with this
event and it went off flawlessly.
Saturday consisted of practice sessions and sprint races,
In the zone
Liz Shaw, PCA Zone 9 Representative
and then on Sunday, there were enduro practice sessions
and three enduro races. Unfortunately, we were only able
to see a couple of the enduro practice sessions because we
had to get to the airport to fly back to ABQ. The track is
HUGE, and on Saturday afternoon we jumped on a golf cart
and got a guided tour from one of the volunteers.
The weekend after the PCA Club Race, I attended the
New Members Social at the home of Roadrunners Yvonne
and Paul Teske. They’ve hosted the social at their house
the last couple of years, and they did an outstanding
job of providing a delicious barbecue lunch for about 45
people. It was great to meet the new members and to see
some seasoned members who are getting back into the
Roadrunner Region action. Several hands were raised when
the question came up about who will be attending Parade.
And speaking of Parade—as I’m writing this, I’m
getting my list together of what to take to Monterey. I’ll
have pictures and stories for my August report.
For those of you who aren’t going to be able to get to
Monterey for Parade, you have another chance to get over
to the area for a great car event. In mid-August, PCA will
host the inaugural Werks Reunion in Carmel Valley. The
event takes place on Friday, August 15, and from what
I’ve heard, this will be a spectacular event, with over 500
Porsches showing up. For more information, go to www.
werksreunion.com.
On a sad note, friends and family are mourning the
passing of long-time Rocky Mountain Region member
Grady Clay. Grady was a very active member of PCA and
had the honor of winning the Parade Tech Quiz 4 times!
He was well respected by everyone, and his technical
knowledge of Porsches was legendary. Among his many
accomplishments, he was also a mechanic, racer and
concours judge. Grady will be missed by everyone.
See y’all this summer!

I get around
Dick Badler, RMR/PCA Columnist
My memorial
So I was having dinner with a friend. I forget exactly how it
came up. It was sort of out of the blue, the wild blue. My
friend asked me what I would want as a memorial service.
I looked at her blankly. I didn’t have a clue.
Frankly, I don’t dwell on my mortality. I’d much rather
focus on the future. And, besides, what difference will it
make to me, if I won’t be there to participate? And just how
presumptuous would I be to assume that I have life lessons to
impart on others?
But I sipped the hemlock. I asked her, do you have a
memorial planned out?
And, with that, my friend, who has 25 years in AA, started
rattling off a complete memorial service, from soup to nuts,
including readings from the Big Book, excerpts from certain
steps in the process, where her two children would speak, for
how long, and so on and so forth, ending with an open mike.
She finished, sat back, and shot me a contented stare.
Oh, I said … and I began to panic. But a thought struck
me, one thought: take my ashes, take them out on the
highway, in a high performance car, preferably a Porsche,
and strew them out the window. But you must be traveling
at more than 100 MPH.
Now she had a panicked look. “How do you do that?”
she said. She obviously does not have the car gene.
I said it’s easy. Just find an open stretch of highway.
Speed up. Do the deed. And slow down. It’s a snap. And
you can use my radar detector, if it makes you feel better. I
won’t need it anymore. I don’t even care if it’s day or night.
Anything else?
She had given me a little time to collect my thoughts.
The wheels started turning, so to speak.
Music. You must be playing music from my death
defying playlist. Loud.
Like what?
Highway to Hell. Deadman’s Curve. The Leader of the
Pack. It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue. Knockin’ on Heaven’s
Door. A Thousand Miles from Nowhere. Ol’ 55. Rockin’
88. This Is The End. Born to Run. Beep Beep. Pink Cadillac.
Hot Rod Lincoln. Hey Little Cobra. Mercedes Benz. Don’t
Stop (Thinking about tomorrow.) Long May You Run. Road
to Nowhere.
Nothing by the Beach Boys?
Good catch. 409. Shut Down. Little Deuce Coupe.
Well, what about a service?
Now I was rolling. I want a large flat screen TV set up,
and I want it to play, in a continuous loop, in-car videos of
Senna lapping Monaco, Schumacher lapping Spa, a Porsche
956 lapping the Nürburgring, preferably with Derek Bell’s
voiceover, the two-minute Shell commercial celebrating their
60-year relationship with Ferrari, the Le Rendezvous film.
What else?
38
At the reception, I want monitors set up, playing Grand
Prix, Le Mans and Senna.
What about Rush?
I’m impressed!
Any photos?
Sure, why not. Take from my house the following, and
put them on easels, all around the service area: my line
cutaway painting of the Marlboro McLaren MP 4/2, signed
by Niki Lauda and Alain Prost, my two vintage Monaco
Grand Prix posters, my poster of the Siffert-Redman PorscheGulf 908-3 in the 54th Targa Florio, my poster of the Porsche
Carrera 6 airborne in the 1000 Kilometer Nürburgring race,
my poster of the 911 in the 1966 Monte Carlo Rally.
Oh, and my Kills Bugs Fast poster of the 993 Turbo.
And anyone who wants them can have them. What am
I going to do with them? Better yet, have an auction, with
the funds going to an anti-texting-and-driving campaign.
Do you want anyone to speak? To say a few words on
your behalf?
No. I want someone to read the words from two ads that
I framed, decades ago. They’re both for the Ferrari 308. The
first one says “What can be conceived can be created.” And
the second one says “Only those who dare truly live.”
That’s it?
What else is there?
And with that I sat back, and I too smiled contentedly.

“We just picked one up on Saturday. We
also have a Cayenne Turbo S and 991

the other vehicles. It’s an awesome
performer, a great ride, well-balanced,

“I really like it. The really long wheelbase
should equate to better handling on the
road. Better gas mileage is a great feature
too, but handling curves and going faster
under control are the real benefits. ”
Bob Burch, Centennial
“I like it. If I was in the market for a small
SUV, I’d consider it, but probably not
before the diesel comes out.”
Jennifer Padilla, Arvada
“I think it’s awesome. I’d love to have
one for my grocery getter. And since my
birthday’s in October, I guess I’ll have to
start dropping hints!”
Hanh Ho, Littleton
“There’s really not much leg room in the
back for taller people. And the interior of
the model I saw has too much black for
my taste. I love the outside design and the
overall layout inside is nice too.”

What we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in
your Porsche by particip ating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech
sessions, car shows and more.
DRIVING EVENTS
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which
participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in advance). A tour
may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend
with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow
scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/
or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are
sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and
a dose of competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR
typically offers several. A number of tours are
usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified by a set of
instructions. Rallies are typically run on public,
paved roads, and speed limits are always observed.
The two major types of rallies are the Time-SpeedDistance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD
rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions
precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points
are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the
locations of which are not known in advance) early
or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid
and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—
at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche
Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a
Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined by
orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top
speeds are generally moderate, topping out around
40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many
cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals—
typically only one or two cars are on the course at
any time. Autocross is a safe way to experience
high-performance driving while learning to drive
your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially
an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX
school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a
major event at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe,
controlled environment for high-performance driving
instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the
opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the
help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled,
closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA
philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times
is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE
experience may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some
DE events are followed immediately by a time trial
event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify
their performance. Lap times may then be used to
measure personal improvement, for bragging rights,
etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La
Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak
International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event.
A race weekend consists of a number of practice
sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often
involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races. As
a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is
required for competition, club racers are serious
and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with
them to the track can be quite impressive! As a
point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program
was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever
Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event
of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of
volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting
events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High Plains
Raceway which, combined with a Driver Education
event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!
NON-DRIVING EVENTS
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new members.
Historically, a membership meeting begins with a
social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s
program. The content of the program varies,
sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent
event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished
Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.
Membership socials, unless otherwise stated,
are held the first Thursday of the month. Different
venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and
inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for
details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to
the Committee Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like–a
session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not
just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate
practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake
bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by
experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom
are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year,
typically in the “off months” when few driving
events take place. In addition, numerous tech
sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in
as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A
number of judged categories usually exist, typically
differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,
Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or
“full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars
sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for
owners who wish to participate but not compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local concours
events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports
Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting
United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche
Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

Porsche Parade, ‘74...
The 19th Annual Porsche Parade was held
in Pocono, PA in July 1974. There were six
RMR entrants for Parade. The newsletter and
its editor, Jim Joska, won first in class in the
newsletter contest. Besides the usual concours,
autocross, and rally, there were tech sessions,
a newsletter workshop, a great afternoon on
Porsche restoration and preservation, and
banquets.
