Olsen hosting a breakfast buffet, tours of the facilities, a tech session and test drives of new models. It should be a fun day. Register for it on Motorsportsreg.com. Hello all … welcome to the dog days of summer – or to monsoon season – which officially started on June 15. This is the time of year when many of us hunker down and survive the heat with indoor activities. Lastly, we will be driving up to Mount Lemmon on August 27th, with a picnic lunch prepared by the Iron Door Restaurant. We will have a cornhole toss, bingo and other activities. Watch for your notice that registration is open for this event, at the end of July, on motorpsortsreg.com. You will note that our club is no different. We have just a few things planned for the summer. One of which is our annual 4th of July Celebration – we are grateful to Steve Darcangelo for lending us use of the Dakota Bar and Grill again this year. Please note the announcement on page 4. It was a fun outing last year. You may remember that I won the cornhole toss first prize … a delicious apple pie. (I guarantee there will be no repeat) The first prize will again be a scrumptious pie. Join us for the fun and cooler temps on the slopes of Mt. Lemmon. We also have a joint event planned on July 24 with the Arizona Region entitled “North meets South.” This event will include a drive up to the new Chandler Porsche Dealership where they are I also know that this is a popular travel time for many of us – as always, we hope everyone has a safe and relaxing summer, wherever you may be. PCA-SAR Adopt-a-Roadway By Mark Fuller – Community Service Chairperson On a beautiful mid-March morning, the semi-annual Adopt-a-Roadway activity transpired. Nine exemplary volunteers assembled at the Beyond Bread at Ina and Oracle where we enjoyed coffee and pastries before the cleanup. We were so happy to have Rink Reinking join us for coffee and share some of his recollections as a Club member for 40 years! The nationwide effort of sponsorship for the Adopt-a-Roadway program helps keep our highways looking presentable. The Club has made a long-term commitment to fulfill this community service project. We had a fantastic time socializing, talking about cars and upcoming SAR events as we picked up litter on Orange Grove Road between Oracle and First Avenue. This non-arduous task took us just an hour to complete and gave us some healthy exercise in the process. All of us talked about how much fun it was. I am so appreciative of the core group of volunteers that always support this event and extend to them, yet again, my most sincere thanks and appreciation. Like all successful Club events, volunteers make things happen. Fall will be the next opportunity to join us in this worthwhile endeavor. As an aside, we loved seeing Peter and Fran’s gorgeous new Ruby Red Panamera and Axel and Amy’s very tricked out Cayenne S Hybrid. Wow!! Thirteen hiking enthusiasts and two of their furry friends enjoyed their outdoor trail adventure, a picnic, and time together. Thanks to Kurt Fuerstenau for organizing our spring hiking excursion. Photo by Kathleen Kendler July 2016 5 Photos by Barb Crowley Cirque du Carrera In April, Porsche of Tucson unveiled the new 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera at NoRTH. Many SAR members enjoyed the camaraderie along with good food, rhythmic music … and of course the introduction of the Porsche 911. The Flam Chen Pyrotechnic Theater Company’s Cirque du Soleil-style production wowed attendees … as did the new cars on display. Thank you Porsche of Tucson for inviting SAR to your party. “DREAM2” – Our 2017 Carrera 911 4S By Stuart Duzan Introduction by Hal Tretbar: We were fortunate to sit with Stu and Nanette Duzan from Fountain Hills, AZ at the introduction of the 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera at NoRTH Restaurant. They had just had their 2017 911 4S delivered that day and I asked them to write a story about it for our ZN. After I saw the photos of it, I asked if Stu had requested to have only the Porsche name on the back. “Yes, I had the factory delete the words, Carrera 911 4S on the back. Too much clutter. The word ‘Porsche’ is enough … and with the differences on the back, a Porsche owner knows how to distinguish. Less attention from cops too. It will have a blue specialty plate, ‘In God We Trust’ and a plate number ‘DREAM2.’” Ah, yes. A true Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing. Here’s the promised article: 6 HTTP://PCASAR.COM “DREAM2” – (cont'd) It all started when I was five years old. One Saturday morning I decided to go see what my father was doing under our 1946 Chrysler Windsor, with Fluid Drive. He was simply doing preventative maintenance – lube, oil, and filter. I wanted to help by handing Dad a wrench, etc. Dad was busy and I was probably more of a nuisance than anything. However, he pointed to a few things and was trying to explain what he was doing. I was fascinated! I simply loved being under the car and learning how it worked. As I became able, I was washing cars, doing detailing, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting. My father was particular and very detail-oriented. He sometimes lost patience with me, especially if I did not clean and put the tools away in the exact place I found them. I was told that I could have my first car if I stayed home the first two years of college. I negotiated and was able to purchase my first car: A 1964 Triumph TR 4 with overdrive. It was red with black leather interior. The ragtop “sweated” when it rained moderately. I simply loved it! Dad financed the car and I made payments to him. I payed for all expenses including insurance. I worked for $1.25 - $2.50/hr., doing gardening and handyman projects for people in the community. I would work 8-12 hours on Saturdays and Sundays, but not during the week, because I had to maintain my grades in high school … otherwise my car would be history! I have had a couple of Ford Mustangs, several Honda vehicles, a Buick Park Avenue, Cadillac Seville Elegante, Acura TL, and in 2008, I ordered the love of my life, a beautiful hand-built Aston Martin DB9 Coupe. I still have it today! I have great admiration for the hand-builds and I was considering purchasing one as our daily driver, but I knew that did not make sense. I waited for three years for the second generation Acura NSX to be ready for production, however upon the four preliminary reviews, I felt it was not the right daily driver car for my wife, Nanette, and me. The Porsche sports car has been on mind the past five years. I felt a lot of improvements had finally been made and we were ready to try our luck with a 2017 Porsche Carrera 911 4S. My wife asked me whose car would it be? I paused and said, “Well . . . since my car is the Aston Martin DB9, the Porsche will be yours.” She replied, “Good answer.” So last November, I chose the three Arizona dealers from whom I would request a quote. There is no doubt in my mind that the new dealer in Chandler has the potential of being a good dealership, however, the owner told me that the allocation for the 4S would be a September delivery. Porsche of Tucson said that they could order and it would be here by late April. They were all very pleasant and Efraim Gonzalez was our contact person. I already had chosen the color and researched all the options I wanted: Midnight Blue Metallic exterior, with the new all leather interior in Medium Blue (blue/grey) with “Chaulk", oyster, winter white seats. I was very nervous about the color choice, because I had to order the interior sight unseen! Also, the online Porsche color chart recommendation didn’t have my color choice. The vehicle arrived in the San Diego dock on April 1. It was transported to the Tucson dealership on April 12. We were picked up at our home in Fountain Hills, AZ, Friday, April 15, and we saw our 9114S for the first time! We left the dealership to travel nine miles to the Westin La Paloma; garaged our new baby, checked in, showered, and attended the Porsche unveiling of the 2017 911s at NoRTH. The food, beverages, entertainment, and weather were perfect! We were amazed at the numbers of loyal Porsche owners, including some very nice people from the Porsche Club of Southern Arizona. We met Hal and Dorothy Tretbar and after owning the vehicle for only 1 ½ hours, I felt like a part of the Porsche family. The two hour drive home via highways 77/79 was wonderful as always. The two famous cops greeted us, as always, in Florence. We acknowledged them; that I would behave, because we have to break it in properly! My wife and I have detailed the car for four days: wash, clay bar, #4 rubbing compound, glaze, and three applications of Zymol carnuba wax (with overnight curing in between each application). Huber OptikeDrei tint films and frontal body films (including headlamps, mirrors, door edge guards), and redo of Porsche’s rear wheel splash film that has too much “orange peel” for this caliber. We shall return and keep in contact with you. After all, we are “family!” What’s for dinner? July 2016 7 Coyotes, Reptiles and Bears, Oh My! By Gary Ottaviano ! On Saturday, March 26, some of the SAR Sierra Vista folks met at Casa Ottaviano for a trip to the Tucson Desert Museum followed by lunch at the nearby Coyote Café. We had a good sign-up of 18 people, but due to an unusual attrition rate, we ended up with only eleven. Before beginning the trip, we had a chance to meet our newest members – Robert Brooks, his lovely wife Vache, son Robert Jr. and cute-as-can-be daughter, Ryann. We welcome the Brooks family to SAR!!! Heading out from Sierra Vista. Destination: the Desert Museum, west of Tucson Photo by Gary Ottaviano !!!!!! Ron Faulkner led us to the Desert Museum. We managed to avoid hitting any of the bicyclists we passed on the twisting, turning, scenic AZ 83… a real feat as there were many! Larry and Melanie Rogovein met us at the gate with guest passes, one for each family … a very nice treat that saved all of us a few dollars. THANK YOU, Larry!! Patti and I had been to the Museum in the early 2000s and it seemed at least twice as big and way nicer! We saw lions, tigers and bears! No, not really, but we did see coyotes, prairie dogs (Patti’s favorite) and a black bear (really). They had a large reptile display (snakes: YUCK, not Melanie’s or my favorite). We also saw javelinas sleeping under a bridge, white tail deer, owls, tortoises, butterflies and much more. If you have not been there in a while, the museum is well worth your time! On to the Coyote Café: We followed Ron to the Coyote Café for lunch. Some of us had been there when SAR visited the Old Tucson movie site. The café is just as cute and the food just as good as we’d remembered … and we had the most friendly waitress! During lunch, Larry was presented his Chili Cook-off Trophy. It was even engraved with his name. Following lunch, the group broke up with everyone pretty much going in different directions! We had a great day. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8 !! !! HTTP://PCASAR.COM Vulture Culture at the Desert Museum. Tech went flawlessly thanks to Stuart Anderson and Robert Dearing. Then it was track time. The cars were quick and before we knew it, the last Porsche crossed the finish line. Everybody waited for the timing results. It only took Kathleen Kendler, Nancy Elliot and Lee Cuevas a few minutes. There were so many hands to clean things up. It was all over by five-thirty when Jim and Kathleen locked the gates. Another successful Cinco Autocross in the books! Thanks to all the people who worked on making the day fun. (Check out more AX photos on Facebook by Lon & Lee) Forty enthusiastic drivers turned up for for a day at Musselman. It all started when a fellow friend and enthusiast invited me to join him and a Datsun club, having anxiously anticipated an opportunity to track my Jetta GLI. After my first run, I was hooked. The author in his Jetta GLI staged to enter the Musselman track. photo by John Herold The event was full to capacity with car enthusiasts enjoying the perfect driving weather. There were several trailered vehicles, as well as many street cars, providing a diverse turnout for attendees to watch. Participants brought everything from a Cayenne Hybrid to a Cayman GT4, and the track was dotted with groups of Guards Red. There were individuals, couples, and families of all ages, including a young couple who brought their 993 and their VW Golf so they could both track. The event included plenty of instructors to help guide both new and experienced drivers and help drivers get the most out of the day. Autocross allows a driver to push both themselves and their car in an open environment. A simple course layout on paper can quickly become a sea of cones on your first run. Autocross forces a driver to learn to trust their car at its limits, and feel the car’s performance in a variety of formats. Musselman is the perfect track for selfimprovement, fun, and getting to know your vehicle. I subsequently attended the entire Phoenix SCCA Spring series and several Phoenix PCA autocross events. As a Tucson native, I jumped at the opportunity to run at Musselman with the Southern Arizona Region’s Porsche Club of America. SAR’s event included a timed run after practice runs. The participants were allowed a warm-up lap and three flying laps that were timed. They spaced out the cars well so that drivers weren’t inhibited by distractions and could attempt their best time. The Musselman track is tight, smooth, and built for ideal carting conditions. Speeds at the track are well under 100 miles an hour in the straights for most cars. The turns require a thoughtful line and steady hand, allowing the driver to feel out weight transfer in a fun, controlled environment. For this particular day, the track set-up included a slalom on the back straight, further reducing speeds and adding another enjoyable twist. The Cinco de Mayo experience at Musselman was a personal highlight for me as a budding autocross enthusiast. Looking back at my first event at Musselman with the Datsun crew, I achieved a full second improvement over my January time … even with the additional element. The event set-up, participants, cars, and venue made it a great day to put it all out on the track. Track Map mhcircuit.com Well, it looks like Dad was in the lead – for a little while at least. Zoe’s name for Barb is “Gaga.” At Cinco, Barb Crowley was watching the judging of the Radmacher’s 914-6 and noticed that Zoe seemed a bit concerned. Come to find out that Zoe didn’t like all those judges poking and prodding around the car that her dad had spent so much time restoring and cleaning for the Full Concours competition! She was afraid they might hurt it. Barb C. asked Zoe to write an article for the ZN about her experience at Cinco. You will enjoy her reflections from the perspective of an eight year-old. We had a giant Porsche club meeting at Trail Dust Town on Friday night. I got to pan for gold and go on a train ride. We nearly got hit by a car coming out. The next day when I woke up, Dad was already set to go to the car show. My dad had to get this car from his best friend who died, Dan. Dad fixed the car the way Dan always wanted it. He wanted others to remember Dan so he also made a sign with pictures of his old friend, the car and pictures of them hugging. I set up the table and got my chair out while Dad parked the car next to a tree in a shady spot. Soon enough, Gaga came and was lucky to park right next to us. At registration, I found the bowl with granola bars and took one. It was yummy. I found another in our gift bag and ate it too. It tasted so delicious, the chocolate melted in my mouth. Next I looked for the ballot to vote for our favorite car. Everybody got one when they entered a car and each one got to vote for their favorite car. Gaga had a favorite car and it was the same one as mine, but it didn’t count as two votes. Next we got some raffle tickets. There were tables with bags on them everywhere. Two ladies were selling the tickets. We put the top strip of the tickets in the bags and kept the bottom strip. This was my first raffle. There were so many gifts to see and get … so I looked at all the gifts and then I put my tickets in and waited for the time to see if I won. Right before they started, I put a ticket in on something nobody else wanted. It was a painting. When they called the first time, I WON! It was a “Porsche Only Parking” sign. I waited for a long time and then I won the painting! It was huge. I loved it. I went home and put the painting in my camper. It looks so good. It is an Indian in a canoe that we named Hiawatha. p.s. She recommends that you read her favorite series of books – Race to the Wild. Zoe will be entering third grade. It took a long time to get there. Once we got there it was grassy land, the Tucson Country Club. There were flags on the grass to help people find where to park … or go in circles like Gaga did! There were so many different cars I didn’t even want to count them. All the cars were being displayed or being judged. My Dad’s was being judged and Gaga’s was being displayed. “What$are$they$doing$to$my$Dad’s$car?“$ Photo$by$Barbara Radmacher$ 22 HTTP://PCASAR.COM Cinco de Mayo People's Choice Award Dave and Barb Radmacher receiving their Cinco de Mayo trophies from Barb Crowley. Results of the Cinco de Mayo Enthusiast Award By Axel Olsen – SAR President I have the pleasure of announcing that Jim Kendler is the winner of the 2016 Cinco de Mayo Enthusiast Award. It was a very close competition between Greg Curtiss and Jim Kendler. Just one tenth of a point separated Jim and Greg. The purpose of the Award is to promote volunteerism and individual club member participation in Cinco de Mayo events. Below are the results: We had six PCA-SAR members who entered vehicles in the two major PCA-SAR Cinco de Mayo Zone 8 competitive events. Four members entered the same Porsche in the Autocross and Concours earning the ten bonus points for entering the same Porsche in both events. A very timeconsuming task because the Concours points are awarded on cleanliness of the vehicle’s interior and exterior. Greg Curtiss, Jim Kendler and Axel Olsen Photo by Garry Morris All three will receive PCA-SAR gift certificates which may be redeemed in the coming year towards PCA-SAR events. Jim will receive a $100.00 Gift Certificate. Greg will receive a $75.00 certificate for second place. The Third place award of a $50.00 PCA-SAR gift certificate goes to Steve Popelka, who entered his 2002 Porsche 996 turbo in the Autocross and Concours. The Board is looking forward to the 2017 Cinco de Mayo and encourages all club members to join in the fun. Maybe you will be next year’s winner! See Ya There! 28 HTTP://PCASAR.COM Porsches2Prescott Article and Photos by Axel K. Olsen The Arizona Region’s Porsches2Prescott the 2016 version, enjoyed great weather and a good crowd of Porsches on display in the Courthouse Square. The weekend started with a fun run around Prescott Valley following registration and a no-host reception in the evening. Saturday morning dawned sunny and a little breezy but the temps were mild. We had a great day for the display. Many of us met at the conference center and drove down to the square where we were directed to park three vehicles wide on the blocked off street. We were so deep that there were over 100 Porsches on display. The Kendlers and Olsens had the only four door Porsches on display with their Cayennes. I even fielded a question from one of the locals asking if that was a real Porsche SUV. They didn’t know that Porsche made anything but sports cars. We finished the official events of the day with a banquet, door prizes and awards. Luckily, we didn’t win any door prizes because they were all local Prescott sponsors and… winning would have meant another road trip to Prescott! Sunday morning included a tour of Prescott Vintage Motors, one of the finest private car collections around, including: Mario Andretti’s Indy car, a Formula 1 Ferrari, 1973 Porsche Carrera RS, Porsche Speedster, Porsche 930 factory slant nose, 1931 Packard and more! Then off to home. All in all, a fun-filled Porsche Weekend! We hoped to have it in March this year to avoid the very warm days that can come in April, but we were trumped by a visit to the base by the Secretary of the Air Force, Heritage Flight where air show pilots receive their training; and YES … the visit of the Thunderbirds. To add to all that, the base had a major exercise in preparation for deployment. All that dictated that the show be postponed until April. We could not have been more blessed with good weather – at least 99 % of the day. Towards the latter part of the show, a strong wind gust picked up the Jim Click tent, flew it over the field to about the pitcher’s mound, then quickly reversed course (before it could be rescued) and landed against two TR3s and another Triumph from the Tucson British Car Registry club. The damage was not extensive, but any damage to our precious show cars is cause for concern. In quick order, the Click representatives connected the car owners with its insurance company, made arrangements for repair, and we all went off to lunch and a cold one. Of the 24 Porsches that signed up, 18 made it to the show — the first time in years that we had some missing in action. Nevertheless, it was a perfect day, with almost 130 cars and a few 1930s vintage motorcycles on the grass (the soccer field was under reconstruction so we occupied the baseball outfield, via the Swan and Golf Links gate) which worked out very well. When it was all said and done, we raised just short of $7500 and it all goes to support the troops on the base, particularly the young enlisted families. The Southern Arizona Region - PCA has been a major player in this DM50 Car Show from the beginning and this event simply would not be successful without that support. Thanks to all, and if you were among the missing — you missed a special day supporting a very good cause. July 2016 31 Located in Trail Dust Town 6541 E. They came with the Goodyear Eagle LS 2. I’m looking for something with some type of a warranty or longerlasting. I have looked at the Pirelli Scorpion that has a 55K warranty. I believe the Michelin Tour HP has a 65K warranty. The Bridgestone Duehler may or may not have a warranty. If you or anyone has any thoughts of something that is going to last longer than these, I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you. Bob Hastings Answer: Bob, thank you for sending the pictures and info. Let me start by saying the days of 50,000-mile tire life are long past and the vehicles we now drive have become harder and harder on tires. The pictures of your tire show a good amount of what I call "chunking" as well as outer-edge wear. Chunking is seen from time to time and is usually on the original set of tires as they age. To me, the outer-edge wear indicates that the alignment is possibly not set as well as it could be. After renewing your tires, I suggest you get your vehicle aligned and show the photos of your tire wear. Chain stores are not likely to have someone who is knowledgeable enough about alignment. I've used Alignment, Brake & Suspension Specialists (Speedway and Rook) for over 25 years and have had good results on cars that show abnormal tire wear. You indicated that maybe only the front tires need replacing. Changing tire brands and age can be dangerous. Not all tires behave the same or have the same traction. I recommend you replace all four tires. I will say I've never driven a Porsche with an N-rated tire and been disappointed, but that rating comes with a price. Be wary of tires that list a high mileage warranty – many turn into rolling rocks long before the tread goes away. Ride quality and response is what makes a Porsche. Your wear indicates an alignment issue and would not be covered by warranty. I have always been a Michelin fan and, after having hundreds installed, I can only think of two sets that didnot live up to Michelin's reputation. Hope this helps. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Robert Dearing July 2016 33 34 HTTP://PCASAR.COM
