A series of four short shows that span the fifty years
that Bread & Puppet Theater has been in existence.

President and Chair was created in 1982 and is
a ridiculous puppet show which makes fun of puppet
shows and election campaigns.
History of Humanity, @ 2000, a short and lively
show that has been performed many times over the
years in many places all over the world.
A Man Says Goodbye to His Mother, originally
created and performed during the Vietnam War Era
and, sadly, still pertinent.

Movie: BERT STERN: Original Mad Man
This film, by Shannah Laumeister, is a revealing
look at the career of original “bad-boy” photographer
and cultural icon Bert Stern. After working alongside
Stanley Kubrick at Look Magazine, Stern became
an original Madison Avenue “mad man”, his images
helping to create modern advertising as well as mint
the concept of photographer as “star.” From his
meteoric rise during the “Golden Age of Advertising”
to photographing the world’s most alluring women in
fashion and Hollywood -- including Audrey Hepburn,
Bridget Bardot, Liz Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe -- it
seemed Stern could do no wrong, until a dramatic fall
from grace. This is a story of self-creation; rise, fall and
reinvention. It explores creativity, celebrity, and desire
through the eyes of a man who got everything he
wanted. Almost. 2013. 90 mins.
Movie: LEVIATHAN
A groundbreaking, immersive portrait of the contemporary commercial fishing industry. Filmed off the coast of
New Bedford, Massachusetts – at one time the whaling
capital of the world as well as Melville’s inspiration
for Moby Dick; it is today the country’s largest fishing
port with over 500 ships sailing from its harbor every
month. Instead of romanticizing the labor or partaking
in the longstanding tradition of turning fisherfolk into
images, filmmakers Lucien Castiang-Taylor (Sweetgrass) and Verena Paravel (Foreign Parts) present a
vivid, almost-kaleidoscopic representation of the work,
the sea, the machinery and the players, both human
and marine. Employing an arsenal of cameras that
passed freely from film crew to ship crew; that swoop
from below sea level to astonishing bird’s-eye views,
the film that emerges is unlike anything that has been
seen before. Entirely dialogue-free, but mesmerizing
and gripping throughout, it is a cosmic portrait of one
of mankind’s oldest endeavors. 2013. 87 mins.
Last Chance! Movie: CHASING ICE
“You’ve never seen images like this before… It
deserves to be seen and felt on the big screen.”
- Robert Redford. Directed and produced by Jeff Orlowski.
In the spring of 2005, acclaimed environmental
photographer James Balog headed to the Arctic on a
tricky assignment for National Geographic: to capture
images to help tell the story of the Earth’s changing
climate. 2012. 75 mins.

HELD OVER! NT LIVE / National Theatre of London:
Alan Bennett’s new play, PEOPLE
Alan Bennett is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner
and Olivier Award-winning actress Frances de la Tour,
with whom he worked on The History Boys and The
Habit of Art. Dorothy (de la Tour) wonders if an attic
sale could save the grand house where she has lived
all her life. Of course, “people” are the problem. Alan
Bennett, one of Britain’s most celebrated playwrights,
once again strikes gold with his sixth play to have its
premiere at the National Theatre. 2 hrs. 35 mins. $22
adults / $15 students.
Movie: A PLACE AT THE TABLE
50 million people in the U.S – one in four children
– don’t know where their next meal is coming from,
despite our having the means to provide nutritious,
affordable food for all Americans. Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine this issue through
the lens of three people who are struggling with food
insecurity. The film shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our
nation, and that it could be solved once and for all, if
the American public decides – as they have in the past
– that making healthy food available and affordable is
in the best interest of us all. 201. 84 mins.
Movie: HERMAN’S HOUSE
“What kind of house does a man who has lived in a sxifoot-by-nine-foot cell for over 30 years dream of?” The
injustice of solitary confinement and the transformative
power of art are explored in Herman’s House, a feature
documentary by Angad Singh Bhalla. The film follows
the unlikely friendship between Jackie Sumell, a young
New York-born artist, and Herman Joshua Wallace,
one of America’s most famous inmates as they collaborate on an acclaimed art project. The film takes
us inside the lives and imaginations of two unforgettable characters – forging a friendship and building a
dream in the struggle to end the “cruel and unusual
punishment” of long-term solitary confinement. 2013.
81 mins.
The Met Opera: Live in HD:
George Frederic Handel’s GIULIO CESARE
The opera that conquered London in Handel’s time
comes to the Met in David McVicar’s lively production.
The world’s leading countertenor, David Daniels, sings
the title role opposite Natalie Dessay as Cleopatra.
Baroque specialist Harry Bicket conducts. 4 hrs. 15
mins. $25 adults / $15 students.
Movie: IN BED WITH ULYSSES
A documentary by Alan Adelson and Kate Taverna
“The movie lets fresh air into Ulysses like a gust
from the Irish Sea.” – Andy Webster, The New York
Times. The film tells the provocative story of how the
novel that is widely considered the greatest work of
modern fiction was created. Using interviews with
Irish novelists Colum McCann and Edna O’Brien
as well as period footage and staged readings of
selected parts of the novel, the film discusses Nora
Barnacle, Sylvia Beach, Harriet Shaw Weaver, and
John Creagh and the obscenity battle in the USA.
2012. 80 mins.
CinemaLux: MOTHERS OF BEDFORD
Q&A with filmmaker Jenifer McShane and guest
Mona Graves, one of the mothers of Bedford.
A presentation in association with the Re-entry
Taskforce of Columbia County.
Is it possible to become a better mother while serving time in a maximum security prison? Mothers of
Bedford, a feature length documentary, follows five
women incarcerated in the Bedford Hills Correctional
Facility and looks at their lives through the lens of
motherhood exploring the effects of a long-term
prison sentence on the mother-child relationship.
Filmmaker Jenifer McShane spent four years visiting
Bedford Hills and following the women and their
families. 2011. 94 mins.Tickets: $7.50 TSL members;
$10 General public.
TSL KIDS SERIES:
Tickets $7 Adults / $5 Children
WHITE MANE [1953]
Directed by Albert Lamorisse. In the south of France
is a near-desert region called La Camargue. There
lives White Mane, a magnificent stallion and the
leader of a herd of wild horses too proud to let themselves be broken in by humans. Only Folco, a young
fisherman, manages to tame him. A strong friendship
grows between the boy and the horse, but they must
elude the wrangler and his herdsmen to live freely.
White Mane is presented in a new English translation, faithful to the original French voiceover and
dialogue, spoken by Peter Strauss. 1953. 40 mins.
BALLOONATIC [1923]
One of Buster Keaton’s final short films before he
graduated to making feature length movies. In this
short, a hapless amusement park attendant finds
his runaway balloon ride has left him in a strange
predicament. 1923. 25 mins.
40 years and counting - Time & Space Limiited - 1973 - 2013
Time passes. The first 40 years of Time & Space Limited have been full of innovative work and talented people. We have been able to touch the lives of many. The power of
art to change lives and minds continues to amaze us. Yes! That power is real.
It has been a joy to be on this journey and to offer such a variety of programming to
our audiences. Our plate is full, indeed. And the fact that we have been able to control and
channel some of the magic is overwhelming.
Our lives have embraced many people from all over the world and we hope you all
will accept our invitation to be present at the anniversary party. It is a celebration that merits
sharing and being at the table of the TSL family.
We have big arms and hearts, and our creative life is all about an embrace that only
the arts can imagine and realize. The gallery, the screen, the theater, the kids, the music – all
assemble this evening under the grand roof of the great space of TSL to celebrate this historic
moment in time.
Don’t miss out on the occasion. 1973 seems like yesterday. Time passes quickly, to
be sure. Be here and now. The next 40 years look to be more and better. We hope to see you
on Saturday, April 20 for a TSL-style celebration. Thank you again and again.
