THE NEW WEBSITE
What a year we had in 2011! With the untimely
closing of the park for weeks due to the damage
caused by the Laguna Canyon Flood, so many of
our canine friends were anxious to get back to
their playground- not to mention us owners who
saw the what a difference the park makes for our
peace of mind! More than 40 feet of fence had to
be replaced, extensive debris and mud had to be
moved and still it took time before things seemed
to get back to normal. Additionally, we have new
neighbors at Laguna's Alternate Sleeping Location
for the Homeless and new challenges were
presented as we tried to create an environment
conducive to enjoying our amazing park. We are
grateful for the support of the Laguna Beach
Police Department and the endless trips out to the
park to ensure our safety during the transition
with our new neighbors. It is important to remind
everyone that your safety comes first. If you have
an emergency situation occur in the park with
people - Dial 911 - not Animal Control. Also,
please remember that with the sidewalk traffic
increase, it is very important not to leave
valuables visible through your car windows, this
creates potential for break-ins.
Many positive achievements occurred such as
the installing of 5 shade trees purchased by
FLBDP and several new benches donated by the
Irvine Company. We are so appreciative of the
great work done by our City employees to make
the installation and planting a success! It’s pretty
exciting to see that these trees have survived
unlike in the past and new buds are appearing on
the trees now, so we look forward to the shade!
FLBDP also appointed a new Executive
Director, held our annual “My Best Friend’s
Brunch”, have created a new website and a
Facebook page too! Also, we welcome anyone
who would like to become more active in FLBDP
and are open to your suggestions to make our
park and fundraising events even better!
FLBDP is so excited to announce our new website:
www.LagunaBeachDogPark.com which is filled
with great information about the park; canine
emergency facilities, hours and directions from the
park; great articles on dogs by local vets and
notables; photos taken in the park; opportunities to
join FLBDP and become voting members;
corporate and memorial donation opportunities
and a new apparel store just to name a few! We
are still working to make this site better so please
feel free to contact us with your suggestions and
send your photos taken in the park!
THE DOGPARK ON FACEBOOK

“My Best Friend’s Brunch”2011
The annual event held on November 6, 2011 at
Tivoli Too! in Laguna, was a huge success and
raised much needed money for the Dog Park and
local animal rescue efforts. Never a dull minute
when we get to combine a social outing with our
“best friends!” June Neptune and her world-class
staff at Tivoli Too! provided an amazing spread of
fabulous food, gorgeous venue and first rate
service for the event- even in the midst of rain! It’s
hard to imagine anyone in our community who
contributes more regularly or generously than
June. We are forever grateful.
We also had the great privilege of having the
incomparable, dynamic Bree Burgess Rosen,
Founding Artistic Director at No Square Theatre, as
our MC and our talented musical Trio with Steve
Norde, Bruce McFaul and Chris Daniels. These folks
gave their time and talents to support the event and
we really appreciate and enjoyed every minute of it!
On top of that, they’re just a lot of fun to have around
so we hope they’ll come back next year!
A truly gratifying feature of My Best Friend’s
Brunch was the tremendous participation we
received from local businesses. Dozens of local
businesses really stepped up and gave a wide array
of gift certificates and special offers that added to
the big smiles and canine grins- including Gina at
Animal Crackers in South Laguna donated a huge
gift basket and all of the table center pieces –
another WOW! We also want to recognize our
corporate sponsors such as The Montage Laguna
Beach, Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet
Foods, The Millan Foundation, Merrick Dog Food,
and many others.
It was a special pleasure to welcome notable
rescue and canine groups such as PUPS, The Pet
Rescue Center with Dr. Wheaton, Animal
Crackers, Guide Dogs, The ARK. And a special
thank you to our awesome volunteer team that
included Joy Butterfield, Kerri Sherwood, Cathy
Hallinan, Jennifer and Thor Erickson, Dan
Mulrenin, Nanci Nicoli, Kathie Taylor, Robin
Colton, Robin Main, Lexi Kowalczyk. This is quite
a diverse group with an equally diverse set of
skills that were brought to bear on planning,
organizing and working the event. What a team!
We look forward to doing it again this year and
hope to see all of you there with your pups!

Tennis Ball
Dangers
We are all so lucky to have such a beautiful open
space to throw the tennis ball for our pups to enjoy
but we are asking for help to make sure that we
can continue to do so. As you know, every Wednesday, the park is closed for maintenance which
includes cutting the lawn. Many times, due to the
volume of tennis balls in the grass, the lawn
mowers roll over them shredding them into
dangerous pieces that could cause a dog temptation to chew, choke or swallow these pieces
leading to a serious situation. We ask that anyone
at the park on Tuesday’s help to pick up the tennis
balls and place them in the white bucket attached
at the front entrance gate into the large dog park
and/or help to move the balls to the outer
perimeters in areas such as the pavement or dirt
mound where the lawn mowers do not cover.

As we head into warmer weather and our pups
enjoy getting wet, swimming in the ocean or pools,
this is the time we usually thing about ear
infections. However, according to Laguna Beach
Veterinarian, Dr. Randall Bondurant, “What most
pet owners and many veterinarians overlook is that
an ear infection is quite often secondary to
another, primary problem. Most often that primary
problem is allergic reaction. Most ear infections
are caused by an allergic reaction that creates
inflammation and additional discharge within the
ear canal causing the perfect breeding ground for
organisms to grow and create the ear infection.

Beef and Russet Potato Recipe For Dogs • reprinted courtesy of JustFoodForDogs.com
• 16oz Lean Ground Beef, 85/15 raw
• 1/2oz Beef Liver, diced or ground raw
• 11 1/2oz Russet Potatoes, diced with skin
• 6oz Sweet potatoes, diced with skin
• 1oz Carrots, finely chopped
• 1oz Green Beans, finely chopped
• 1/2oz Green Peas, finely chopped
• 1/2oz Green or Red Apples, finely chopped
• 1/2 g Salt (pinch)
1. Wash all vegetables thoroughly.
2. Use fresh vegetable whenever possible but if one or two items must begin as frozen, make
sure there are no added ingredients such as salt or sugar.
3. Be sure to use ripe potatoes, without any shades of green showing.
4. Make absolutely certain that all apples have been cored and all seeds removed - apple
core/seeds can be toxic to dogs.
Cooking Directions
A. In a nonstick skillet, brown beef over medium high heat, stirring frequently. Do not over
cook. Do not drain. Remove from heat and immediately add chopped peas, apple, green
beans and carrots. Stir briskly and cover so that fruit and vegetables are fully steamed from
the heat of the beef. All vegetables should be soft but not mushy. Let the mixture cool until
it is warm to the touch.
B. Bring water to a rapid boil in an appropriately sized pot. In the meantime, quarter the russet
and sweet potatoes (do not peel). Add potatoes to the water and lower heat to a simmer.
Cook for 15-20 min, occasionally stirring. Drain, let cool to the touch and dice.
C. In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients including oil and salt. Slowly sprinkle
nutrient powder mix while constantly stirring with a large spoon. This recipe will yield
approximately 2 lbs 6 oz of food equating to approximately 1,630 kcal.
D. Portion into individual serving size and store in freezer or refrigerator.
