Shakespeare: Antony & Cleopatra
IR – 633
If power is the ultimate aphrodisiac, what electricity must have been
generated the day Antony met Cleopatra roughly two years after the events
of Julius Caesar. Their fates were sealed politically and romantically. They
may have been world leaders, but when love struck, they became mortals
like the rest of us, flawed and aging ones at that. We recognize their
jealousies, doubts, shame and insecurity. But at the end of the day, their
love is still standing, and it is this, not the political battles and machinations,
that Shakespeare celebrates in all its human messiness. Bring any copy of
the play to class.
