report - Newport Art Museum
Creative and curious people founded the Art
Association of Newport in 1912 – artists, thinkers,
writers – people who understood that art is our link
with the past, a reflection on the present, and our gift
to the future. It helps us to celebrate our roots and to
find our place in history. Art teaches us how to see, hear
and feel the world – to express ourselves, our dreams,
our visions. Art saves the past and celebrates the future
by preserving our cultural heritage. Our founding
members believed that art mattered in 1912. It still
matters. Almost one hundred years later, the Newport
Art Museum continues to enhance community life as
a shared place for the arts, ideas and culture, where
creative and curious people come together.
ANNUAL
REPORT
2011
FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Time marches on! When many of you read this, the Newport Art Museum will have
crossed the century mark into its second century of bringing art to life in Rhode Island.
These pages bring you reports from the 12 months preceding our centennial year,
nevertheless during 2011 the Museum’s 100th anniversary was continually present in our
thoughts and actions.
As we prepared for the 2012 centennial, we reflected on our origins as the Art Association
of Newport (AAN), a democratic community-oriented organization dedicated to “the
cultivation of artistic endeavor and interest amongst the citizens of Newport.” A new
charter adopted in 1915 expanded the AAN’s mission to encompass all the arts, art
education and the establishment of a public art museum.
Since the beginning we have sought to enhance community life as a shared place
for the arts, ideas and culture. In 2011, we continued to serve Rhode Island and
regional communities as a cultural gathering place with a reputation for inclusiveness,
professionalism, high-quality exhibitions and programming, and dedication to individual
growth and learning.
It is an honor and a privilege to serve this institution and my community as President of the
Board of Trustees. In that capacity, I wish to extend my professional and personal gratitude
to all of the dedicated volunteers, staff members, community members, businesses,
foundations and others who have given of themselves and their resources to support the
Newport Art Museum’s efforts to bring art to life in Rhode Island.
Roderick B. O’Hanley
President, Board of Trustees

DIRECTOR’S REPORT FOR 2011
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
AS OF AUGUST 2011
What is the Newport Art Museum? How is it of value to
the community it serves? In 2011 we addressed these and
other questions related to identity in order to define a
direction for the Museum’s second century.
From the inside, the Museum’s identity is based on its
purpose as expressed in our mission and our vision for the
future, and on those core values that guide our decisionmaking. From the outside, the Museum’s identity reflects
what others believe is valuable and impactful on the lives
of individuals and the broad community. Ensuring that
both viewpoints are closely aligned is part of the work that
makes the Newport Art Museum a respected, trusted and
beloved institution in Rhode Island.
To this end, in 2011 we have dedicated our energies to
enhancing Rhode Island life by serving as a gathering place
for the enjoyment and enrichment of all. We have been
building our collection of Rhode Island regional art through
our 100 Works for 100 Years acquisition initiative. We have
created more scholarship and outreach opportunities, as
well as free Museum days, so that people, regardless of
their ability to pay, can be inspired by art or become artists
themselves. We finished the restoration of the Cushing
Memorial Gallery, and created a compelling new visual
identity with the help of Malcolm Grear Designers that puts
art within Newport in a contemporary yet classic design.
As the Museum stands on the eve of its centennial, we
are very grateful to the many dedicated stewards – staff,
trustees, members, volunteers - who in years past have
guided the Museum, and to foundations and individuals
who have given their support. We are equally appreciative
of today’s supporters and leaders who care deeply about
the Newport Art Museum’s next one hundred years.

The Newport Art Museum is fully
accredited by the American Association of
Museums (AAM). This accreditation is the
highest national recognition of a museum’s
commitment to accountability, public
service, professional museum standards, and
excellence in education and stewardship.
Fewer than 5% of America’s 17,500 museums
have achieved this distinction.
OUR MISSION
The Newport Art Museum inspires passion
for the arts in diverse audiences through
exhibitions and collections, arts education,
historic preservation, and arts and cultural
programming. It focuses on artists – past
and present – who have lived and worked in
the Rhode Island region and celebrates their
importance in American art.

CURATORIAL DEPARTMENT
In 2011, the Newport Art Museum
presented 16 exhibitions showcasing the
region’s finest contemporary and historic
art. We are the only museum in the country
to focus on the art of Rhode Island.
The ever popular Newport Annual
Members’ Juried Exhibition attracted
submissions from 242 artists. Juror Maya
Allison, Curator of the David Winton Bell
Gallery, Brown University, selected 72 works
for the exhibition.

Our major summer exhibition,
“Remembering the Ladies: Women and the
Art Association of Newport,” highlighted
women who were instrumental in
establishing and operating this now thriving
institution, in particular Maud Howe Elliott,
long time “director” [secretary] of the Art
Association. The exhibition also featured
artwork by significant regional and national
female artists who have exhibited here
since 1912, including Helena and Louisa
Sturtevant, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney,
Lilla Cabot Perry, Gertrude Fiske, Isabel
Bishop and Nancy Elizabeth Prophet. The
show was well reviewed and publicized
with articles in American Art Review and
Newport History. Generous support from
Patricia and Michael Fernandez, William
Vareika Fine Arts Ltd, Terrence and
Suzanne Murray and Diane Wilsey funded a
beautiful full-color catalogue.
In the fall, “Image and Innovation: 100
Years of Prints and Drawings from the
Permanent Collection” featured many
works that were exhibited for the first time,
thanks to funding for mats and frames.
Bruce Howe was at last acknowledged as
the donor of many of these prints
and drawings.
100 Works for 100 Years, initiated
in 2010, embraces the goal of
acquiring 100 significant works
of art representing 100 years of
service to our community. In 2011,
16 new pieces were donated
or purchased.
Our Collections Acquisition Fund
will grow through a deaccessioning
project spearheaded by local
curator Karen Conway. Proceeds
from the sale through auction of
works in the permanent collection
that do not comply with our mission
(or were acquired with the idea of
selling) will support the Collections
Acquisition Fund.

We also brought art education to elders
in collaboration with area retirement and
assisted living communities.
Eighty-five students from Rogers,
Portsmouth, and East Bay Metropolitan
High Schools learned about museum
careers while earning high school credits
through MUSE (Museum Studies),
supported by the Institute for Museum and
Library Services (IMLS). IMLS funding also
allowed us to hire three MUSE students
as interns.

BUILDINGS + GROUNDS 2011
Cushing Memorial Gallery
2011 saw the culmination of numerous repair and restoration
projects within the Cushing Gallery. We repaired water
damage to the interior plaster, duplicated original trim
and ceiling molding to restore the original form and color,
refinished the main stone composite lobby floor and the
badly worn gallery floors, with outstanding results.
Exterior accessibility and aesthetic improvements to the west
portico included restoration of the original doors, slate inlay,
domed ceiling, and decorative plaster. The handrails on
both entrances are scheduled for improvements in 2012.
John N. A. Griswold House
To ensure the integrity of the Griswold House façade and
roof, we painted the siding and trim, installed snow hooks,
and repaired gutters. The addition of warm-wire along leakprone features will prevent ice build-ups that can lead to the
incursion of storm-water. The many intricate windows of the
house are awaiting a final cleaning and coat of paint before
new storm window installation, made possible through a
grant from The Champlin Foundations.
The six-year major inspection of all fire suppression systems
throughout the facility took place in October 2011. Minor
repairs and replacements were needed. This corresponded
with a staff briefing on fire code, suppression tools and
procedure to ensure a fire-safe environment.
8
Technological infrastructure improvements include the installation of new servers,
streamlined calendar synchronizations, and a virtual PBX phone system has increased
overall staff efficiency and productivity. We upgraded and repaired the audio-visual stack
housed in the Ilgenfritz gallery to accommodate its heavy usage. The outdated projector
remains the only item in need of replacement funding in order to meet the high definition
needs of our cutting-edge guilds and presenters, and to maintain the attractive nature of
our venue.
Coleman Center for Creative Studies
The Kahn Building is one of the most highly trafficked
areas on campus per square foot. Efforts to renew the
building’s overall aesthetic include plaster repair and
painting throughout the interior, and stripping and waxing
tile floors to restore their original luster. A hazardous
chemical disposal initiative has removed old and unused
chemicals from the print studio. The installation of HVAC
improvements, through the generous support of the Owen
Coleman Family Foundation has improved overall air quality.
Maintenance and improvement of the plumbing, ceramic
studio, and general appliances have helped to ensure the
overall functionality of the center.
In 2011, we upgraded heating and cooling systems at the Coleman Center with
generous support from Mr. and Mrs. James J. Coleman and the Owen Coleman
Family Foundation. A state-of-the-art SMARTboard and updated design software
enhanced our Digital Studio thanks to the generosity of The Jean Margaret Young
Brown Fund and the Rhode Island Foundation. Support from the Ocean State
Charities Trust enabled the Museum to upgrade Coleman Center office systems.
This magnificent carved Greek marble desk with
Pakistani onyx inlay now graces the Cushing Gallery
foyer thanks to the generosity of Robert and Joanne
Schacht.Originally created for Schacht’s law office in
Providence by sculptor Richard Graham, the desk fits
beautifully into our refurbished neo-classical building.
Graham studied sculpture at the Rhode Island School
of Design and exhibited at the Art Association in the
1970s, before relocating to Carrera, Italy.

EVENTS 2011
Summer Soirée
More than 260 guests attended Honoring Artful Women:
Painters and Patrons, on Saturday, July 9, 2011 where
we celebrated national arts patron Diane B. Wilsey for
outstanding support of the arts in San Francisco and
Newport. The gala raised more than $227,169, including
$14,000 in Coleman Center scholarship funds. Chairs
Jean and Sidney Gorham hosted a fun-filled evening that
included a sumptuous dinner provided by Russell Morin
Fine Catering, dancing to the Bob Hardwick Orchestra
and an exciting live auction. Special thanks to committee
members Rod O’Hanley, Linda McGoldrick, Diana Slocum,
Diane Montenegro, Judy Blake, Lawrence Bacon and David
Price; to event planner Francesca Campo; and to Jean
Gorham for her spectacular flower arrangements.
Congressman David Cicilline and presented a Congressional Citation to Diane “Dede” Wilsey
in recognition of her outstanding patronage of the arts in Newport and San Francisco.
Wet Paint 2011 made a big splash
Established and emerging artistic talent was in the spotlight
August 20 and 21 during Wet Paint, which generated
almost $68,000 for general operations, exhibitions and
programs. Our heartfelt thanks go to sponsor WILLIAM
VAREIKA FINE ARTS LTD and to the more than 300 artists
who donated all or a large part of the proceeds from the
sale of their work to the Museum. Thank you to co-chairs
Jessica Hagen, Brooke Roberts and Tom Eberhardt,
auctioneer Mike Corcoran, our many volunteers, and to
all of you who joined in the Wet Paint auctions. Thank you
also to sponsors Art New England, Artscope, Joseph A.
Chazan, M.D., the Norman Bird Sanctuary and our cash and
in-kind sponsors for making 2011 Wet Paint a success. We
gratefully acknowledge the efforts of committee members
Larry Bacon, Judy Blake, Martha Lynne Barrows, Jessica
Bradley, Tara Elliott, Gayle Hargreaves, Jeff McCooey and
Claire Newbury.
During 2011, 90 volunteers donated 3,108 hours
to the Museum. Interns and work-study students
from Salve Regina University, East Bay Metropolitan
School, Art Institute of Boston, Rogers High School,
Rhode Island School of Design, Evergreen State
College, Connecticut College, Brown University,
Clark University, and Drew University collectively
contributed 761 hours. We simply could not get by
without these generous and devoted supporters.
Thank you one and all.

We honored long-serving Griffon Shop volunteer
Joan Klaserner in 2011 as Volunteer of the Year. “It’s
a delight to work with the people who work here. I’m
still having fun and I’ve enjoyed meeting the people
who consign here too,” says Joan. Our heart-felt
thanks to you Joan for your generosity.
In 2011, we closed the Griffon Shop, a consignment
store run by Museum volunteers for many years, to
make way for the Elizabeth Conklin Museum Shop,
which will carry merchandise reflecting our exhibitions
and collections, catalogues, art and art history books,
original art by Newport Art Museum members and
souvenirs. We will be raising additional funds in 2012 to
support the launch of this new venture.
We are grateful to these
Centennial Sponsors who will
be supporting the Newport
Art Museum through 2012.
CENTENNIAL SPONSORS
The Museum wishes to acknowledge and thank the
many volunteers who have given countless hours
of their time in successfully managing the Griffon
Shop. The Museum has been the recipient of their
love and attention for twenty-four years. We are most
appreciative of their dedication and look forward to
having their help in the Elizabeth Conklin Museum Shop
and in other areas of the Museum community.
