Dear customers,
04
It’s a pleasure to present to you the new religious
books catalogue from William Collins. Here you
will find the cream of UK religious publishing
from the UK’s largest house, showcasing all the
product we know you’ll want to include in your
core stock lines.
We are delighted in particular this year to
make available the sumptuously produced
ESV Anglicised Lectern Bible, a jewel in the
crown of Collins’ Bible publishing, and a crucial
piece of the jigsaw for churches using the ESV.
Pastors constantly tell us that they need an
authoritative, accurate translation, in British
English, which they can trust to put in the hands
of their congregation. The Anglicised ESV is the
perfect solution. Working with our partners at
Crossway, the Lectern Bible has been produced
with the finest materials, has a large print size
for ease of reading in worship, and matches
the ESV Pew Bible page for page. We can also
help find a new home for your old Bibles with
communities in need of the Gospel – just email
me for the details, or for any more information
on our range.

Established 1819
William Collins has been publishing Bibles and other Christian material for
nearly two hundred years. Archivist Dawn Sinclair tells us more.
When William Collins began his
publishing and stationery business,
he is unlikely to have predicted that it
would continue to thrive and develop
for nearly two hundred years. The
Collins name has played an important
role in publishing – particularly Bible
publishing – throughout the decades.
Billy & Lady Collins
Collins’ first publication came from
Thomas Chalmers, who was a very
well-known churchman at the time
and went on to be an important figure
in philosophy, theology and political
economy. The Christian and Civic
Economy of Large Towns was published
on 24 September 1819 and was the first
of many books by Chalmers, who was
a friend as well as an author for William
Collins I for many years.
An important year for Collins was 1839,
when the company gained the licence
to print the Bible. By 1842, Collins had
published the New Testament in three
different typefaces, and the following
year the first complete Holy Bible with
4,631,056 letters was set by hand. The
first family Bible was then published in
1845, with some editions costing less
than £1. Collins, however, became
cheapest to the highest quality. In
1890, Collins founded the International
Bible Agency to act on their behalf
in America and in 1892 it helped to
import £20,000 worth of Bibles. It
was also in this year that the company
began printing Bibles in ‘clear type’,
producing the famous subsidiary title –
Collins Clear Type Press.
At the turn of the century, the
popularity of large family Bibles was
waning, however the general Bible
publishing industry was flourishing
and by 1915 Collins published their
cheapest Bible available, at just 8½d.
In the 1950s, Collins acquired Geoffrey
Bles Publishers which brought with
it many religious writers, including
William Barclay, Teilhard de Chardin
and, of course, C. S. Lewis.
synonymous with high-quality Bible
publishing, alongside dictionary and
education titles.
The late 1800s were a prosperous time
for Collins. By 1860 the company was
publishing 17 editions of the Bible,
which amounted to around 125,000
copies printed each year, from the
William Collins and Sons continued
to have an important role in Bible
publishing throughout the decades,
which continues today as part of
HarperCollins.
The
company’s
forefathers paved the way for success
and we are proud to carry on and care
for our rich heritage today.

Celebrating 50 Years of Publication
The GNB aims to give today’s readers maximum
understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. It
does not follow the traditional vocabulary and style found
in historic English Bible versions; instead, it attempts to
present the biblical message in standard, everyday, natural
English – and it’s regularly updated to make sure it reflects
contemporary usage. In various formats, it is used by
churches, individuals and schools throughout the world.

For over 400 years the King James Bible has

the language of this translation has changed how we

The result of fifteen years of careful work by an
international team of experts, drawn from all the main
Christian traditions, the NRSV is based on the latest
archaeological, biblical and linguistic scholarship and
uses the best available manuscripts. Its use of language
respects both men and women, while retaining the
masculine gender for God. These Anglicised editions
available from Collins adopt British usage for spelling,
grammar and punctuation.
NRSV CHURCH OF ENGL AND BIBLE
Published in partnership with the
Church of England and designed
especially for Anglicans, this Bible
includes Prayer During the Day for
Anglicans throughout the church
year, and night prayer (Compline)
from Common Worship. It also
includes the Common Worship
lectionary, giving you the scripture
readings for every day of the year.
Previously, Anglicans needed
three different books for their daily
worship: a Bible, a prayer book
and a lectionary; now, they need
only one.

biblical territories.
The deluxe edition of this Bible

THE SHED THAT FED A MILLION CHILDREN
CAN WE SAVE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?
THE SAINTS’ LIT TLE BOOK OF WISDOM
The Extraordinary Story of Mary’s Meals by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow
by Hans Küng
by Andrea Kirk Assaf
‘I would like to have enough food to
eat and I would like to be able to go
to school one day.’
Edward, 14, Malawi
Over fifty years ago, the world’s
bishops gathered for the Second
Vatican Council in the hope they
could, in the words of Pope John
XXIII, ‘open the windows of the
Church and let some fresh air in.’ It
was a gathering of real optimism;
Hans Küng was there.
For Edward, this was the extent of
his ambition; for Magnus, these
words set him off on a journey
around the world that he could
never have imagined. Mary’s Meals,
the organisation Magnus founded,
now feeds more than one million
chronically hungry children every
school day, all run from a lopsided
shed in the Scottish Highlands.
The vision of Mary’s Meals is that every
child in this world should be able
to receive at least one good meal
every day. That is entirely possible in
this world of plenty, and the story of
Mary’s Meals could hold the key to
eradicating child hunger altogether.
Available in hardback and paperback
formats, complete with full-colour
photographs, The Shed That Fed
A Million Children is an amazing
testament to the impact one person
can make, and the perfect text to
inspire young people in a church or
school setting.

But in Can We Save the Catholic
Church? Kung relates how,
after fifty years and three Popes,
the Church has only pulled the
shutters back down, becoming
ever more conservative. Refusing
to open dialogue on celibacy for
male priests; the role of women
in the priesthood; homosexuality
and gay marriage; or the use of
contraception even to prevent
AIDS in Africa, the Roman System
is losing touch. Now, amid
widespread disillusion over child
abuse, the future of Catholicism
is in crisis.
Pope Francis has made more
signs than ever before that
the Church can present a
more compassionate vision of
Christianity to the world. The time
is ripe for reform, and Küng calls
for a complete renewal of the
Church, setting out a radical and
inspiring programme of action.

Building on the foundations set
down in the first volume, this brand
new collection blends the voices
of the early Celtic and desert saints
with more contemporary sources
in ways that continue to speak
to us in our own generation and
culture.
Prayer is the ‘heartbeat’ of the
Northumbria Community, and
this book contains the Daily Office
(morning, midday and evening
prayer, and compline), which
can be said, or sung to the music
provided.
As well as the daily office, there
are four original Communion
services, along with liturgies and
prayers that have emerged out
of real-life experiences of seeking
God in many differing contexts
throughout the world. Topics
include reaching adulthood/midlife/old-age; renewal of a marriage;
the summer solstice; living with
pain; blessing a garden; Christmas
preparation; after an argument;

THE BOOK OF FORGIVING
LET THERE BE LIGHT
The fourfold path for healing ourselves and our world
The story of creation retold by the world’s best-loved cleric
All of us have at times needed both
to forgive and be forgiven – whether
small, everyday harms or real
traumas. But the path to forgiveness
is not easy, and the process unclear.
How do we let go of resentment
when we have been harmed, at
times irreparably? How do we forgive
and still pursue justice? How do we
heal our hearts, and move on? How
do we forgive ourselves for the harm
we have caused others?
This retelling of the biblical
story of creation vividly portrays
the wonder and beauty of
God’s creation on each of the
seven days. Using Archbishop
Tutu’s lyrical text from the
Children of God Storybook
Bible and Tillman’s remarkable
illustrations, Let There Be Light
brings the story of creation to
life like never before for a new
generation of young readers.
Drawing on his memories of
reconciliation in post-apartheid South
Africa, Archbishop Tutu has identified
four concrete steps to forgiveness
through which we must all pass if we
are to reach our destination.
Available in a hardback gift edition and
paperback The Book of Forgiving is a
touchstone for anyone seeking the
freedom of forgiveness: an inspiring
guide to healing ourselves and
creating a more united world.

As a child growing up in the safety
of Britain, Jonathan Wittenberg
was deeply aware of his legacy
as the child of refugees from Nazi
Germany. Yet, like so many others,
there is much he failed to ask while
those who could have answered
his questions were still alive.
After burying their aunt Steffi in
the ancient Jewish cemetery on
the Mount of Olives, Jonathan,
now a rabbi, accompanies his
cousin Michal as she begins to
clear the flat in Jerusalem where
the family have lived since fleeing
Germany in the 1930s. Inside an
old suitcase left abandoned on the
balcony they discover a linen bag
containing a bundle of letters left
untouched for decades.
Jonathan’s
attention
is
immediately captivated as he
tries to decipher the faded writing
on the long-forgotten letters.
They eventually draw him into a
profound and challenging quest
to uncover the painful details of
his father’s family’s history.
THE SHED THAT FED A MILLION CHILDREN
Through
the
wartime
correspondence of his greatgrandmother Regina and his
grandmother, aunts and uncles,
Jonathan weaves together the
strands of an ancient rabbinical
family with the history of Europe
during the Second World War
and the unfolding policies of the
Nazis, telling the moving story of
a family whose lives are as fragile
as the paper on which they write,
but whose faith in God remains
steadfast.
The Mary’s Meals Story
‘I would like to have enough
food to eat and I would like
to be able to go to school
one day.’
Edward, 14, Malawi
founded, now feeds more
than one million chronically
hungry children every school
day, all from a shed in the
Scottish Highlands.
For Edward, this was the
extent of his ambition; for
Magnus, these words set him
off on a journey around the
world that he could never
have imagined. Mary’s Meals,
the organisation Magnus
The vision of Mary’s Meals is
that every child in this world
should be able to receive at
least one good meal every
day. That is entirely possible
in this world of plenty, and the
story of Mary’s Meals could
hold the key to eradicating
child hunger altogether.

THE DIVINE CONSPIRACY
Rediscovering our hidden life in God
THE DIVINE CONSPIRACY
CONTINUED
Fulfilling God’s Kingdom on Earth
Gracefully weaving biblical teaching, popular
culture, science and scholarship together,
Dallas Willard refuted the view that Christianity
is solely about gaining admittance to heaven
when we die, and taught that, as disciples, we
have access now to the life of the kingdom.
Equally relevant today as it was on publication,
The Divine Conspiracy challenges us to step
aside from the pieties of contemporary
Christian practice and offers instead a
practical plan by which we can become truly
Christ-like. It has earned its reputation as a
modern Christian classic.
HOW TO BE HERE
Each of us was created for something
great – we just need to figure out what it
is and find the courage to do it. Whether
it’s writing a bestselling novel, starting
a business or joining a band, Rob Bell
inspires us to jump right in and make
those dreams a reality. Our path is ours
and ours alone to pursue, and great joy is
on offer as a reward.
How to Be Here lays out concrete
steps we can use to define and follow
our dreams, liberating us from worries
about ‘what might happen in the
future’ and our anxieties about the
past – all of which restrict us from
achieving our goals and to help us
live mindfully in the present. This book
will give you the support you need to
silence your critics, move from idea to
action, take the first step, find joy in the
work, persevere through hard times –
and surrender to the outcome.

In The Divine Conspiracy Continued, co-written
with theologian Gary Black, Willard lays out the
next stage in God’s plan as this generation of
disciples, including ordained and lay leaders, step
into positions of authority across our culture and
begin to transform the world from the inside out.
To fulfil the Christian calling is not to remove
oneself from the outside world and take
shelter from its shortcomings, Willard reminds
us, but to step into the world to lead and serve
as agents of change.
