“It is so much easier to have
all these functions available
in one device.”
The Story:
Because Odete Lopes-Screpnek is deaf, she relies on text messaging
and email to communicate at home and work. The problem?
Text messaging is only for short messages, and Odete wanted
the freedom to say more.
Odete’s Challenge:
Odete juggles her responsibilities as a guidance counselor at the
Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf with managing her family,
including two young children.
She relies on email, a small text pager, and TTY to communicate.
While wireless text communication has become popular in the deaf
and hard-of-hearing community, Odete found the short messages
too limiting when she often wanted to communicate more.
The floodgates opened when she discovered BlackBerry®.
She communicates easier at work:
When Odete started using BlackBerry, she gained an accessibility ally.
The device offers all-in-one access to email, PIN, SMS and calendar
in a small format that easily goes with her from place to place.
Other teachers at her school also use BlackBerry devices and PCs, so
she can communicate with them much more effectively. “BlackBerry
has awesome features that include email, text messaging, calendar,
memo pad, calculator and games. It’s so much easier to have all
these functions available in one device. A light glows on the screen
and it’s easy to read messages. What’s more, it’s a great
advantage to be able to change the fonts and their sizes
to what I want. All in all, it’s barrier free!”
With her BlackBerry, Odete gains some other advantages:
• The vibrating alert setting tells her when someone needs to
reach her
• Managing her own communications means she doesn’t need
someone to speak for her on the phone
• The BlackBerry 7100 series gives her a bright screen for
easy reading
• The calendar alarm feature and clock alerts her about meetings
or appointments
She stays in touch with her family:
BlackBerry is also a part of her family and personal life. With her
husband and children in different locations during the day, she can
reach them if she needs to. “It was very difficult to communicate
with people who were not in the same place. My children would
answer the phone and talk for me, and I would use sign language,
but it’s much easier to communicate with a BlackBerry device. I use
email all the time. It’s great for my family too because my husband
and kids can always get a hold of me.”
When she’s mobile, she can:
• Check road and weather conditions and use BlackBerry to
enhance her safety while away from home
• Alert people if she is delayed en route
• Locate others easily at a conference or venue with a quick email
Her Solution:
With her BlackBerry device, this unstoppable teacher:
• Gains freedom: She increases her communications ability
and autonomy.
• Travels with confidence: Since she’s always in touch from
the road.
• Finds an ally at work: She sends messages to colleagues,
responds quickly to school issues, and manages her
appointments.
• Enriches her personal life: She has peace-of-mind
knowing she can always contact her family.
