A Call to Prayer
In looking at our goals in advancing the Kingdom of God in
our District in 2014 we must cover it with prayer.
As prayer coordinators we are working to raise up a prayer
force in Southern Missouri that is unified and strong. The prayer
network is people committed to prayer. There are two ways to
join. By sending your email to [email protected],
or joining the somoprayernetwork on Facebook.
2 Chronicles 7:14 - if my people, who are called by my name,
will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn
from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will
forgive their sin and will heal their land.

It has been said that one of the most effective tools for
evangelism in the world today is church planting. The
focused fervor to reach out to the unchurched in a community and to bring them into contact with the presence of God
produces a positive excitement. It has been found in our
Fellowship that with the first year of existence a new church
will average 70 to 80 persons who are serving with Christ
and committed to fellowship in that new body.
In Southern Missouri, we have placed a new level of
priority on church planting. Part of our vision is to see 100
new places of worship established by the end of 2020. This
goal will be reached through a number of venues:
1. Brand new stand-alone churches raised up throughout
our District;
2. Multi-site locations of existing churches. In this
approach, an existing healthy church begins to reach out to
another nearby community or area of their city by providing
a worship service at an additional location.
3. Adoption of existing groups- In addition we are seeing some independent groups who are not attached to any
denomination or fellowship who could benefit from the covering of the Assemblies of God which will bring relationship, resourcing, and accountability. In turn these groups
can help us reach areas and people groups in our District
that we are not already reaching.
We are already seeing this vision coming to fruition in
each of these areas. In 2013, we saw nine new places of
worship established and are anticipating at least ten in 2014!
Let’s walk back through each of these venues and illustrate:
1. Brand new Stand Alone–Lee’s Summit- Scott Obremski former worship pastor at James River Assembly, felt
a call to plant a church. God led him to the Lee’s Summit
area where he and his team established Summit Park A/G.
Now every Sunday 225-250 persons worship God together
in this new church. In 2014, there are a number of church
plants which are already in the pipeline for launch.
2. Multi-site locations–Epic Church in Independence,
under the leadership of Bobby Hawk, was a church plant
only a few years ago. When they heard that the Grain
Valley A/G was closed, they expressed interest in developing a multi-site in Grain Valley. This new multi-site is now
meeting in a school in the area. Already they have seen

many brought to Christ. Englewood A/G in Independence,
under the leadership of Doug Reed, felt led to multiply and
now have two campuses. In 2014 and beyond, a number of
churches have expressed interest in multiplying themselves
with additional locations. Chad Fisher and the congregation
of Caruthersville First are working right now on a multi-site
in Hayti, Mo!
3. Adoption of existing groups–A Samoan congregation has been worshipping at Independence First for several
years now. (Special thanks to that church for ministering to
this people group.) Yet, they felt led to spread their wings
and to form an established church on their own. They are
now meeting in the old Grain Valley A/G building. (We are
thankful that though we did close one church in Grain Valley,
we ended up with two new ones!) It was my privilege to be
at the exciting dedication of the newly remodeled building
they now call home! Already, in 2014 a group of people
who had been praying together united under the leadership
of Greg Forester and have formed a new church in Monett.
As well, we are currently in conversation with a number of
independent African-American pastors and churches as well
as a Samoan group and a Pacific Island group who have
shown interest in becoming part of our fellowship.
Part of our vision is to see 100
new places of worship establishe d
by the en d of 2020.
Space in this short article does not allow for us to
document all the exciting progress in this area of the God
Given Great Goal for the Southern Missouri District. These
illustrations no more than scratch the surface. Yet, they do
illustrate the move is on!
Isaiah 54:2 says, “Enlarge the place of your tent, and
let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not
spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes.
(NKJV)”
May God lead us to enlarge the tent of our Fellowship
throughout our District. Even more so, may He help us
to use church planting as a tool to reach the 3.4 million in
Southern Missouri who are not currently in relationship
with Christ!

Lisa Harris Interview Because the theme of this Messenger issue is church
planting and revitalization, I would like to introduce to you,
Lisa Harris, wife of our Southern Missouri Church Planting and
Revitalization Director, Jerry Harris. Vicki: I think the ladies of Southern Missouri would
love to know who you are. Tell us about yourself.
Lisa: I am a wife, mother, and grandma to
nine, first and foremost. I love a good book,
and to cook, baking especially, and if I could
be something else, I would be a landscaper.
The subtitles of my life have been pastor’s
wife, missionary’s wife, and church planter’s
wife. Jerry and I have pastored churches for
30-plus years, in a small rural town, in midsized cities, in metropolitan suburbia, and in
the inner city of St. Louis. Our first church was
just a handful of adults and five children, three of
which were ours. One church had an elderly congregation in a large, crumbling building in a big city. Our last
church was large and thriving in a metropolitan area. I have many
stories and lots of experience. It has been quite the adventure. Vicki: In this adventure what would you consider your biggest
challenges? (Maybe – What have you liked and disliked about
your adventure?)
Lisa: I like to think we have been pioneers, especially in the
church planting area. It was a chance to go into uncharted territory and do new and creative things. I especially liked meeting all
the people. God allowed so many types of people into our lives-the characters, the faithful, the difficult. They really enriched
our lives. And I liked watching how God was changing people for
good, even ours. Although the work was hard, there was a satisfaction that we were where God wanted us. I didn’t like the fact
that I was always exhausted, not only physically, but spiritually.
And I didn’t like the loneliness; my husband was gone a lot and I
didn’t have the comfort of an established church home and family. And then it gets so busy and you’re going in so many different
directions, that it’s easy to neglect your relationship with The
Lord. He gets pushed out. So you’re working for Him, but you’re
leaving Him outside the experience. Vicki: How did you find balance?
Lisa: I had to set my husband down and say, “I’m putting up
some boundaries.” My physical exhaustion was affecting my
mental, emotional, and spiritual state. I had to get some rest and
bring myself back into a place where I could rely on God to get
me back on the right path. Vicki: With the demands still there, how did you prioritize rest
and time with God?
Lisa: It was a long journey that didn’t happen overnight. I was
the primary breadwinner in our home, so that was a priority. As

far as the church, I couldn’t be involved in every moment like I
had been. For instance, instead of doing Adopt a Block for the
church on Saturday mornings, I stayed home and took care of
our own home. Fortunately, our services were times of
refreshing for me. My husband has always been
able to teach me from The Word and I learn from
his messages. That has always been a blessing
to me. I had to do some time management.
I had to say, “Ok, I have to get healthy and
how am I going to do it?” Part of it was just
getting physical rest and not devoting all
my non-working time to the church. Those
were hard decisions that Jerry and I had to
agree upon together. And to my surprise, the
church continued on and flourished.
Vicki: I have heard you say, “My job is to
make my husband look good.” Can you clarify?
Lisa: God has put us together and I am his helpmate. I say that I am helping by building him up when
he is down, and bursting his bubble when he is too high. (Giggle)
When people see me as pleasant and honest and open, they
tend to see my husband in the same light. And vice versa. We are
a reflection of each other. I see one of my main jobs as his wife,
in the church, is not to make problems for him. That goes a long
way in making him look real good!
Vicki: That’s an interesting summation.
Lisa: That’s what I always tell my staff pastors’ wives. We
spouses have a lot of power. We can make or break our husbands
in ministry.
Vicki: I’ve noticed that, just like your husband, you are a team
player. How do you view yourself in this new role?
Lisa: Just as I have walked alongside Jerry as minister’s wife,
I plan to walk with him in this new work, to build relationships
with the gals who also walk alongside their husbands in ministry.
So...I’m opening my door and inviting the ladies in...to start having conversations and to start forming relationships. Whatever I
can offer in the way of friendship, experience, resources, or just
time and a listening ear, I will make myself available. I’ll be traveling around with Jerry as he visits church planters and pastors,
and at Sectional Councils and District events, so I can have the
opportunity to meet as many of the wives as possible.
Vicki: Thank you, Lisa, for your transparency and your willingness to connect with our district ladies.
Lisa is assisting me in the office as we set up a Ministry
Women network for our Southern Missouri District. She can be
reached by email at [email protected] or call the District
Office and ask for her phone number. She adds, “I am looking
forward to making new friends!”

Paul the Church Planter
The Apostle Paul was the original church planter. Traveling
from region to region, Paul was not only an evangelist—he was
a church planter. He’d preach, teach, organize church leadership, correspond by letter, return occasionally, if possible, to
check on the status of his church plants, and pray for them every
time he remembered them. Those churches were his joy and
his crown. And Paul would wrestle around with anyone who
threatened to destroy the health and security of the churches he
planted. Though he was constantly on the move, and though he
didn’t stay long-term as pastor at any one place, he was deeply
invested in assuring that the churches he planted grew into
strong and fruitful bodies of believers.
Paul’s longest pastoral tenure in the New Testament record,
about three years, was in Ephesus. The church at Ephesus started
with “about twelve men in all,” but it would become a mighty,
moving force in the province of Asia, ultimately shaking its city
and its world for Jesus. Acts Chapter 19 focuses on several spiritual priorities which marked Paul’s strategy as a church planter.
1. Divine Direction. Paul’s visit to Ephesus in Acts 19 was not
his first. Back in Acts 18:21, Paul had stopped there briefly while
traveling through the area. He even preached in the synagogue
at Ephesus, but when the people asked him to stay a while, he
declined the invitation.
As he left, he gave them this promise: “I will come back if it
is God’s will.” Paul was not in the habit of doing gospel business
without the clear leading of the Spirit. When he arrived back at
Ephesus on his third missionary journey in Acts 19, he was there
by and in the clear will of God.
2. Christian Clarity. Fundamental for Paul was the presentation of a clear, Christ-centered gospel. When Paul met the twelve
men who would be the start of the Ephesian church, they were
spiritually sincere but doctrinally ignorant. Paul did not allow
confusion to continue. He would teach them more and more in the
weeks and years to come, but the gospel message had to be clear
and unhindered right up front. He clarified the centrality of Jesus
and called for commitment.
3. Spiritual Supply. Paul was Pentecostal to the core. He
understood that a plant must be supplied with spiritual life for
rooting and growth to take place. Those twelve charter members
needed spiritual power, and as Paul ministered to them, they were
filled with the Holy Spirit. The core group was now empowered.
I am convinced that what launched twelve men into mega-church
status at Ephesus was the power of the Spirit.
4. Feistiness and Flexibility. I heard an old preacher say one
time, “Supernatural preaching will bring supernatural persecution.” That was true at Ephesus. As Paul began to declare Jesus,
persecution arose, forcing him to move the fledgling congregation
from the synagogue into a new facility, the lecture hall of Tyrannus. Though the move was initially motivated by opposition, it was
a good move. For the next two years, that lecture hall served as a
Bible training center where the body became strong and stable.
5. Missionary Mandate. I heard our own District Church
Planting and Revitalization Director say not long ago in a meeting, “Every one of our new church plants will support missions.”
Paul’s church plant at Ephesus exemplified that principle. Acts
19:10 says that, during Paul’s tenure at Ephesus, “all the Jews and
Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the
Lord.” This was a young church, but it was a missionary-minded
church. We believe that the church at Colosse was planted as a
result of a missionary outreach from Ephesus, authorized by Paul,
conducted by Epaphras.
6. Healing for the Hurting. Another critical element in Paul’s
strategy was ensuring that the church, even in its early stages,
was a spiritual hospital, providing supernatural healing and help
for the hurting. As Paul and his team opened up their hearts of
compassion to the sick and oppressed, God worked through them
to supply miraculous works of deliverance and restoration for the
broken. Acts 19:11 says, “God did extraordinary miracles…”
7. Testimonies of Transformation. Very few things move most
of us preachers like a powerful personal testimony from someone
whose life has been turned upside down by Jesus. Those kinds of
testimonies abounded at Ephesus. Under Paul’s leadership, people
publicly proclaimed their faith in Jesus and their commitment to
live under his lordship. Acts 19:20 says that, as a result of these
powerful public testimonies, “the word of the Lord spread widely
and grew in power.”
8. Further Feistiness and Flexibility. Acts 19 closes with the
dramatic account of the riot that shook the city of Ephesus as a
result of the complaints of Demetrius the silversmith. It was a day
of passionate and public persecution, as multitudes cried out in
opposition to the Christians. But the church didn’t fold under the
pressure. The were a feisty and flexible bunch of believers. They
made it through that day.
Planter-pastor Paul closed out his time at Ephesus and headed
out of town. But a few months later, Paul met with the elders of
the Ephesian church one more time to encourage them about their
future. He would stay connected with them through the years.
And the church would continue to thrive. They would enjoy the
pastoral ministries of Timothy and John in years to come.
9. Lasting Love for the Lord. A final emphasis I see in the
planting of the church at Ephesus is a focus on teaching the
church to love the Lord Jesus passionately and permanently.
Though Luke’s account in Acts doesn’t specifically mention this
priority, we see it in the last biblical mention of the church at
Ephesus. Revelation 2 records Jesus’ urgent message to the Ephesians, charging them to return to their “first love” and to do the
things they had done “at first.” That first love and those first things
were part of their birth and baptism as a fresh church plant.
Paul would close his letter to the Ephesians with this
blessing: “Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an
undying love.”

Effective Church Planting and Revitalization
As we look at the great need for church planting and church revitalization I believe the key to seeing this successfully happen in our District
is to have men and women called by God and empowered by the Holy
Spirit for this task. I want to look at the Apostle Paul’s call to plant a
church at Philippi as a Biblical template for those that would plant and
revitalize churches today. I believe we will see that the elements of Paul’s
ministry at Philippi must be in the heart of every church planter and
every person called to revitalize a struggling church.
People working in church planting and revitalization must be
called by God to their task. You are not a candidate for the task of
church planting or revitalization just because you haven’t been successful in any other area of ministry. You must have been clearly called and
empowered by God to this formidable task.
Paul was called to the work at Philippi.
Paul had a personal call to ministry. So must those that would plant
and revitalize churches today have a person call to ministry. 1 Tim.
1:12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because
He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,
Paul heard the call of God to a place of ministry. I believe that
God still calls people to a certain place at a certain time. Acts 16:6
Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia,
they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. [7]
After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the
Spirit did not permit them. [8] So passing by Mysia, they came down to
Troas. [9] And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia
and help us. Those that would plant and revitalize churches today must
hear the plea of those needing the Gospel and respond to their call.
Paul did everything he could to fulfill the call of God. So must
those that would plant and revitalize churches today. 10] Now after
he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia,
concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.
People called by God will do great things for God. There is no community in Southern Missouri we can’t reach, there is no church that can’t
come alive, if we have a man or woman called of God for the task.
People working in church planting and revitalization must be
great soul winners.
Paul successfully planted a church in Philippi because he was a
soul winner.
Those that would plant and revitalize churches today must win converts to Christ. Paul’s example must be followed today. Acts 16:13 And
on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer
was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met
there. [14] Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller
of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened
her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. [15] And when she and her
household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to
be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” So she persuaded us.
Every church planter and every person that would be used to revitalize a church must be a great personal soul winner.
Conversions happen when three things are in place.
1. Someone goes. Acts 16:13 And on the Sabbath day we went
2. Someone speaks. and we sat down and spoke to the women who
met there.
3. Someone opens their heart to Gospel. The Lord opened her
heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.
Those that would plant and revitalize churches today must call people to a decision to follow Christ. We must give invitations for people
6
Spring 2014 • Assembly Messenger
to make public decisions for Christ. We cannot advance the Kingdom
of Christ with recycled saints, we must win new believers to Christ.
People working in church planting and revitalization must be
willing to confront Satan’s strongholds.
Paul confronted Satan’s stronghold in Philippi.
Every church planter and every person that would be used to revitalize a church must confront Satan’s strongholds. Satan has strongholds set up in every community in Southern Missouri. We must not be
so naive to think that we can build and advance the Kingdom of Christ
without confronting the Kingdom of Satan.
Paul had to deal with Demonic spirits that held the city of Philippi
in their power. Acts 16:16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that
a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who
brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. [17] This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of
the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” [18] And
this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said
to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of
her.” And he came out that very hour. We have been called to confront
Satan’s power in the mighty name of Jesus.
Paul and Silas faced suffering because they were willing to confront Satan. They were beaten and thrown into prison. Every church
planter and every person that would be used to revitalize a church must
be willing to suffer for the cause of Christ. None of us that are trying to
advance Christ’s Kingdom should think we can work for Christ without
some scars.
People working in church planting and revitalization must have
signs confirming their ministry.
Paul experienced the grace of God in the midnight hour and the
prison doors were miraculously opened. Paul won the Jailer and his
family to Christ; Paul and Silas were thrown into prison in disgrace but
were brought out of prison with honor.
Every church planter and every person that would be used to revitalize a church must have signs confirming their ministry. Mark 16:20 And
they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them
and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. The
Church of Jesus Christ is built on the miraculous power of a risen Savior.
Nothing else will accomplish the task of church planting and revitalization. We have been called to here to confront Satan and win!
The greatest confirmation of Paul’s ministry was the church
established at Philippi. Philip. 1:1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of
Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with
the bishops and deacons: [2] Grace to you and peace from God our
Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ will build and establish His
church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. We must raise
up strong, vibrant, soul winning, Spirit filled, missions supporting
churches in Southern Missouri. This alone will be the confirmation that
God is among us.
We must have the mighty hand of God moving in the villages,
towns, and cities of Southern Missouri for we will have no success
without His help. Church planters and revitalization pastors can’t
make miraculous signs happen by their own efforts, but they will
happen because Jesus is working with them and confirming the Word
through accompanying signs.
This is the time of God’s call to bring His work alive in Southern
Missouri. May church planters and revitalization pastors hear the call,
“Come over to Southern Missouri and help us.

A Trip In Eastern Congo
The Bible School teacher, our missionary collegue who serves in Lubumbashi,
Democratic Republic of Congo, Bill Shaw, asked the students who were in his Old Testament class, to write down the books of the Old Testament in order. This was the first day
of class, and only one student was close to correct. Another one only spelled one book
correctly. By the end of the week, most of the students had the Old Testament books
memorized with correct spelling. Old fashioned sword drills helped them learn how to
find passages more quickly. These students come from the remote areas of Eastern Congo. Many of them do
not have a Bible. Some of their Bibles were confiscated and destroyed by rebel forces. But, they have come, many by walking for days, to the Lubumbashi Bible School with a
desire to be trained in God’s Word.
During itineration, our focus has been to raise funds for the Bible School campus in
Lubumbashi, Congo. Churches and individuals have responded. This month, Superintendent Don Miller, Secretary/Mission’s Director Stan Welch and I will be joined by five
other pastors and church leaders on a trip to Lubumbashi and Mbuji-Mayi, DRC. We
will see the students in class, visit and preach in some of the churches, and conduct a two
hour pastor’s seminar. The need is great, the hunger to learn is evident, and together we
can make a difference in this vast land. A chorus that our Chi Alpha group sang back
in the 70’s says, “It only takes a spark to get a fire going, and then all those around, can
warm up to its glowing!” Let’s work together to start the fire!
Please pray for the team as they travel in March to Congo, and especially the remote
area of Mbuji-Mayi, where there has never been a team of white people go before.

A Natural Church Reproduction Movement!
The fruit of the [uncompromisingly] righteous is a tree of life,
and he who is wise captures human lives [for God, as a fisher of
men–he gathers and receives them for eternity]. [Matt. 4:19; I
Cor. 9:19; James 5:20.] (Proverbs 11:30 AMP
A “Natural Church Reproduction Movement” is God’s plan for
His church. Beginning in Gen. the Bible clearly states that each kind
should produce offspring of the same kind. It is a natural process that
God has placed in all of us to reproduce! Physically and spiritually
we are to reproduce! It seems we get the physical down pretty good
but somewhere along the way we have distorted and confused the
spiritual side!
What does it mean to reproduce spiritually? Jesus described it best
in Matt. 28 when he said “go and make disciples.” In Matt. 16 Jesus
told Peter “I will build my church.” When you put just those two scriptures together two unquestionable principles emerge. Both of which
are in step with God’s basic principle of creation.
Two unquestionable principles of reproduction:
First principle: Individual reproduction
“go and make”
Pretty simple and direct but unquestionably personal for all of us.
We are to reproduce ourselves as individually spiritually by reaching, investing, and discipling others to become followers of Christ.
Just like physical reproduction if we aren’t reproducing our family
becomes extinct! Lisa has a cousin who has been married for several
years. She is an only child. By choice they decided not to have any
children. Now at our age, both sets of parents have passed away. At
Christmas Lisa was talking to her and basically they have no one
except Lisa that is a blood relative. To me that’s sad but what is even
sadder is when we don’t reproduce ourselves as individuals spiritually our spiritual family becomes extinct!
Just a thought; is that happening in our country? For the first
time ever according to Pew Research 2013, those claiming to be
“unchurched” is now larger than those who claim to be “churched.” I
know statistics can be boring but nonetheless let me share with you
some deadly ones from a book entitled, “Lost In America.”
• The percentage of adults in the U. S. who attend church is
decreasing
• Half of all churches in America did not add one new person
through conversion growth last year
• More churches are closing than are opening every year
• Conversions to other religions and dropouts from Christianity
are escalating
• Christianity has been on the decline for the last fifty years
• The fastest growing religion in America is Islam
• The unchurched population of the U. S. is the largest mission
field in the English speaking world and fifth largest globally
We can blame our culture for the demise of Christianity but really
isn’t because we are failing to reproduce individually what God has
placed in us? Without individual spiritual reproduction or family is
will become distinct!
Second principle: Cooperate reproduction
“I tell you…build my church”
Jesus was talking to Peter and told him “to build” his church. Not
ours but His. The word build comes from the base word, “doma”
which means, “to build.” It carries the intent of growing a body of
spiritual believers but it also carries the intent or multiple bodies of
believers, which means, to produce another one! Just as the commandment “to go” is unquestionable so is the commandment “to
build.”
Moses wrote “able to produce offspring of the same kind.”
District reproduces districts. General Councils produce General
Councils. Churches reproduce churches! When Jesus said to build
His church he mentioned nothing about numbers but everything
about spiritual health. When my kids were small I did my best to
provide a healthy environment for them to grow. As I did that they
“grew.” If you build a spiritually healthy church the natural result
will be reproduction.
That is my objective. To see a “natural church reproduction
movement” which sees new churches planted and sick churches
become healthy! To administer CPR as needed and if possible that
church begin to reproduce itself and help establish healthy growing
vibrant places of worship that will continue to perpetuate themselves.
The neat thing about it is we are already seeing God doing some
amazing things:
In 2013 we have seen:
Eight new churches
Five net gain for 2013 (from 372 churches to 377)
I don’t think that’s too bad when our fellowship recorded net gain
of seventy churches. 324 churches opened while 254 closed. Southern Missouri contributed to 7% of the net gain nationally.
Last September one of those new churches was Summit Park.
This year we have already had one new launch at Grain Valley, MO.
Three more in the pipeline in STL and two in KC. Another one in
Hollister, MO and another in Hayti, MO. for a total of seven this year
with the possibility of more.
We are also leading two declared restart projects and have seven
revitalization projects that are in the Acts 2 Journey. We have identified nine others for revitalization and possible restart. That is a
total of eighteen churches in the process of restarting or beginning a
revitalization for this year.
What’s great about this is this fall we will be offering the Discovery Weekend and the Acts 2 Journey to each section. We will be
condensing the time so that we can come and meet with two or three
churches on a Sat. and give them a jump start on the Journey and
leadership development.
I am available to come alongside and consult, evaluate, meet with
leadership to help develop strategies and do leadership development.

GIRLS MINISTRIES

Growing Girls
Leads to Growing Churches
A growing epidemic among churches of all denominations, regardless of location, is the decline of children
and youth. When starting a new church or revitalizing
an existing church, evaluation must be made for what
is currently being done to reach the children and youth
in their community. Growing a church is essentially
growing the family of God and we cannot overlook
God’s earliest instruction on how to grow a family. In
Genesis 1:28, God gave the command to Adam and
Eve “Be fruitful and multiply.” Multiply here implies
reproducing. Nature’s way of reminding us about the
inevitable importance of reproducing is the fact that
there is a generation of individuals older than us and a
generation of individuals younger than us. The best way
to reproduce or multiply is by investing in leaders and
emerging leaders that in turn will have a positive effect
on their circle of influence or generation. Investing and
influencing the next generation is what Girls Ministries
is all about. In addition to events and resources aimed
at growing girls in Christ, we offer a mentor based discipleship program that poises the church to intentionally invest in girls from birth through their Senior year
of High School. This discipleship program has shown
to be effective in multiple settings including Sunday
school, small groups, after school activities and midweek service environments. In your church’s desire to
keep the command to be fruitful and multiply, consider
the importance of investing in the lives of girls in your
church and community by being intentional in their
discipleship.
In October we celebrated the commitment and accomplishments of many Southern Missouri girls and
boys at our special ceremony. This celebration focused
on how God has made us to “Shine, Shimmer and
Glow” from the inside out as we share his love with
others around us. Some of the participants are in the
early stages of this discipleship program while others celebrated the accomplishments of many years of
discipleship in the areas of the Bible, prayer, personal
relationships and practical skills. As parents, friends
and mentors gathered to celebrate these boys and
girls, it goes beyond the certificate or specific token of
achievement to celebrating the young men and women
of God that they are becoming. Check out the full calendar and other resources at somoag.org (Girls Ministries)
On Sunday, January 12, Pastor
Don Miller installed Mark and
Kendra Garfield as senior pastors

CROSS POINTE CAMP
Curtis & Cindy Washam, Directors
[email protected]
Updates at Cross Pointe
What a cold winter we have had here in Missouri this
winter. Because of the cold temperatures, we have seen
something at the Lake of the Ozarks that has not been
seen for years, the surface of the lake frozen over! What a
sight!!!
With all the cold weather we have experienced here
in Missouri this winter, we can encourage ourselves with
thoughts of the warm weather that will soon be coming.
Thoughts of warm weather, and summer, bring to mind an
important part of our district’s activities, the activities that
occur at camp.
There are some exciting changes at the camp, that those
attending, will appreciate. The tabernacle has had a new
sound system installed and the sound booth enlarged. We
are thankful that the women’s ministries department has
provided the finances for the carpeting in the tabernacle
to be replaced. The heart of our camp, the tabernacle, is
becoming a comfortable and efficient facility. We look forward with expectancy to what God will accomplish there, in
His power, this year.
We all love going to the snack bar for the summer treats
that we enjoy at camp. Campers and visitors will really
enjoy the facelift that the snack bar has received. The walls
have been painted an attractive blend of colors and all the
counters have been replaced to give the snack bar an updated décor and comfortable feel.
Many will be excited to know that dorm 2’s bathrooms
will be refurbished and updated. These have been in need
of attention for several years and there are churches that are
leading the way to get these repaired and updated fixtures
added. It is not too late to donate to this project. It is in
sight to accomplish this in all the dorms, although it may
not be completed for the 2014 season.
Thursday, May 1st and Friday, May 2nd, will be camp
work days. We want to invite you to come and help get the
camp in shape for the season, and stay for Camp Intercession, that Friday night.
We are excited about the 2014 season of events at Cross
Pointe Camp. In this crucial hour, in these last days, we
know that God will used this place, to pour out His Spirit, to
prepare people for the work of completing our commission
on earth.
For more information about this, or any other activities
at camp, go to crosspointecamp.com.

Planting Youth Ministry…!
I am so excited to partner with Jerry Harris and the Church
Planting and Revitalization vision for our district. I believe
healthy churches provide ministry for all ages: children
through seniors. I know that SMYM can provide strategies and
tools to reach and keep students. A church just needs to
provide “a person” that cares about students and is willing to
make an investment in their future. I consider this a strategic
time for the district and I believe healthy growth will be the
result of our efforts. May God bless our vision!

SENIOR ADULT MINISTRIES
John Heide
[email protected]
A New Old Ministry!
Some of the unique Church
Plants in recent years are ministries
like the popular Cowboy churches
or the Biker churches. One not
quite as well known but with great
potential to meet a need is the
ministry that focuses on the older
(you define old) adult population.
Churches providing services that
minister to the needs of a growing
senior adult population are being raised up in response to a void
created by some churches that are
focusing their ministries on other
age groups. It is of interest that
while some churches are focusing
on the 20 or 30 ‘somethings,” there
is often nothing for the 60 or 70
“something’s.”
Heritage Assembly of God in
McKinney, TX was planted recently to minister to that age group
and God is blessing pastor Len
McLaughlin as they create a “senior
friendly” atmosphere.
Ministries in RV parks (primarily
seniors although they won’t admit
it), are wide open for development
as well as Senior retirement communities like where Judy and I are
serving in a missions appointment
this year.
We have helped to place ministers in 50 Plus ministries and the
need is growing.
Sadly, we have discovered many
seniors who are leaving our AG
churches to go to other denominations who offer something on their
level of interest. This does not
have to happen if we catch a vision
that EVERY SOUL MATTERS TO
GOD and put it into practice!
Whether it is a new church plant
or revitalization of a ministry to
Second Halfers, resources are available to help planters or pastors
reach out to this dynamic group
who have much to offer.
