Los Angeles Figure Skating Club ITOR N O M E C I THE Volume 61, Issue 5 WINTER 2004/YEAR IN REVIEW ISSUE You have probably noticed that this is the first newsletter you have received in a few months. As you can see, we re-vamped its look and we hope that you like the result. Some of you might remember the day when we had color pictures in every issue. Well, Iam happyt or epor t ,we’ r ebaaaac k! Preliminarily, I want to thank the membership for electing me as your President. I am honored to serve you, and hopefully I can be instrumental in making some changes for the better. This season has been exciting so far. We hosted LA Open instead of a club competition in July. Skaters, coaches, and judges came from all over the country to join us. The competition was selected by USFS as a Future Champion Series event and it spanned four long and exciting days. The Board has decided to keep this competition as an open in the coming years, and we hope for the same success. In August, we hosted a Southwest Critique for our home club members. All such members were invited to skate their competition program. Judges who were assigned to judge Regionals gave invaluable feedback to the skaters and their coaches in enough time to make necessary changes before Regionals. Following the on-ice critique, skaters, coaches and parents were treated to an off-ice seminar on the new rules and judging protocol. All attending members were given sheets that judges use in their event, including short program deduction sheets. Further, Nationals judges were available to answer questions throughout the evening. The critique was a great success and the feedback from the program was excellent. We will definitely follow a similar format next year. tional competitors, and presented them each with a check and a special team bag. Our Board is excited to implement changes to make our Club even stronger, so please make your voice heard. Contact any of us with your comments—we will listen. The Los Angeles Figure Skating Club hast heg r eat es tmember s !I ’ dl i ket o thank EVERYONE for pitching in to help make the LA Open a success. We had over 200 skaters from all over the county and just about everyone I had an opportunity to speak with at the competition was full of praise for how well run the competition was and how friendly and welcoming our members are. Sheri Pellegren and Mary Cohen did a phenomenal job with hospitality. They made keeping a small army fed look eas y ,butbel i ev emei t ’ spr obabl yt he toughest job to do at any competition. Pauline Mercado did an equally impressive job coordinating the Junior Board activities, and registrar, Jan Soo Hoo kept things running smoothly at the registration desk. Ian McInnes and Charlie Miltimore were our go to guys, by: Jackie Bundy pitching in and helping with anything and everything. Music chairperson, Don Nelson, and his great team made sure all the skaters had a chance to shine. Now in its second year, the program works in tandem with the U.S. Figure Skating non-qualifying structure. Skaters in the juvenile, intermediate and novice levels (singles, dance and pairs) who are not otherwise ineligible accrue points based on their placements at non-qualifying competitions that are part of the series. Each section has its own series. At the end of the FCS season, each skater who has competed in at least three FCS competitions in the same discipline and level will be eligible for tallying of their points. The skater's best three placements will be used to calculate their point total. The top point receivers in each section in each discipline and level will be awarded FCS medals. Brent & Brian were awarded Gold Medals. Hayley, David and Jackie were awarded Silver Medals. Congratulations! The competitions took place this summer in San Jose, Calif., August 19-22, and in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, August 26-29. The North American Challenge Skate program began in 1996 and is jointly sponsored by U.S. Figure Skating and Skate Canada. The competitions are open to eligible skaters from U.S. Figure Skating, Skate Canada and invited guests from the Mexican Federation. U.S. athletes are selected to participate by virtue of their placement in the U.S. Championships and/or the U.S. Junior Championships. The goal of NACS is to provide international competitive experience for young skaters. The NACS events also provide skaters with the opportunity to enhance their technical skills and improve their level of performance early in the competitive season. Previously, the NACS series consisted of four events —two in the U.S. and two in Canada, but the program was changed to two events this year. The United States NACS competition was held in conjunction with the Silicon Open and included junior ladies, junior dance, novice ladies, novice men and novice dance. The Canadian NACS event included, junior men, junior pairs, novice men, novice pairs and novice ladies. New Home Club LAFSC member Brian Simm wass el ec t edt or epr es entt heUSatt hi ss eas on’ sNACS Championship in San Jose, California, as a Novice Man. Brian had two strong skates, and finished fourth in both the short and long programs. Brian was also appointed by the USFS to the 2004-2005 Developmental Team. Long time LAFSC member, Jordan Judt, who skates pairs with partner Tamara Tossey, was selected to participate in the NACS Championships in Waterloo, Canada. Jordan and his partner finished seventh. Miss Piggy (aka LAFSC adult skater, Patty Poddig) won gold in Lake Placid in her Interpretive Ladies II event in Lake Placid at the US Adult National Figure Skating Championships earlier this year. Skating as Miss Piggy and her longtime beau, Kermit, Patty won the crowd and the judges over with great flair and style in placing first in her event for the second time in two years! Patty has just passed her Adult Gold Freestyle test pete at the Gold level on behalf of the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club for the upcoming adult competitive season. She is excited about the challenge of moving up to her new classification, and at press time is currently working on new programs. We are sure she will come up with something great— she always does!
