A feature film made in rural Iowa
and Minnesota sounds about as unlikely as a water polo team in a rural
Iowa high school. But on June 12,
2015, the dream becomes reality as
Rise of the Sea Urchins hits the big
screen in several Northeast Iowa and
Southeast Minnesota theaters. And
the storyline? You guessed it: Against
all odds a rural Iowa high school water polo team must win a state championship.
Written by film producers Leslie
Nelson of Winona, Minnesota, and
Daniel Ostrem of Peterson, Minnesota, this zany family-friendly
movie follows Ted Biddles, the insecure new kid, his off-balance coach
Max Dungal and the unimpressive
Sunnyville Sea Urchins in their quest
for water polo glory.
Production of the homegrown feature film that Nelson jokingly refers
to as “Certified Iowa Organic” began
with his association with Mark Newcom, Associate Professor of Communications and Director of Electronic
Media at Waldorf College in Forest
City, Iowa. Nelson and Newcom
began working on the movie a year
and a half ago and did the filming
during the college’s 2014 May term.
Newcom marvels that “with a really
small crew and a really tight budget”
the 113-page script of 65 scenes was
shot at 39 locations in just 24 days.
“We shot out early, which is unheard
of, and on-budget, which is also un-
get’ or ‘micro budget’ movie. It’s considered a ‘no budget’ movie!”
Nelson adds, “When it comes from
your own savings, it feels like a big
budget film. But even though there
weren’t many dollars for production, the cast and crew were always
fed well and the production value is
high due to the skill and knowledge
of Mark Newcom and his team.”
Nelson also credits locally owned
theaters who desire to help advance
filmmaking arts in the area for providing venues for the public to enjoy
the end result. Audiences can go online to www.RiseOfTheSeaUrchins.

“If it hadn’t been for the work ethic
of the crew and actors, the vision of
Waldorf College to train top quality
film professionals and the commitment of all the others who supported
us in many ways, we couldn’t have
shot a full length feature film, and
definitely not in 24 days,” says Nelson. “After looking at Toronto film
festival entries I was amused to discover that Rise of the Sea Urchins is
