Before joining Teesside University, she was Associate Director (Services and Operations) in Information and Learning Services at the University of Salford. She has held departmental senior management positions at East London and London South Bank universities and has also worked at Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett, Lincoln and Manchester Metropolitan universities. Liz is a Fellow both of CILIP and the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). A former Chair of the CILIP University, College and Research Group, Liz is a member of the Editorial Board of the New Review of Academic Librarianship and a member of the British Library Advisory Council. Liz wrote the chapter, ‘Space: Changing the Boundaries’ in Collaboration in Libraries and Learning Environments, edited by Maxine Melling and Margaret Weaver (Facet Publishing, 2013). Koen Becking President, Executive Board, Tilburg University Dr Koen Becking is the President of the Executive Board of Tilburg University. He is responsible for general administrative matters, such as the relationship with the Board of Governors and the University Council. Additionally, he works on the university's strategic policy, corporate identity and administrative and social representation. He is also responsible for personnel and student policies. Before Koen joined Tilburg University, he was Chairman of the board of the Dutch Catholic broadcasting organization KRO (2007-2012). Previously, he was Managing Director at the ROI (now PBLQ), a training centre for public sector staff (2002-2007). He has also worked for the Ministry of Justice and the Centre for Public Sector Labour Relations (CAOP). Koen studied political science at the University of Amsterdam from 1988 to 1992, and in 1999 he received a master's degree in Public Administration from the Netherlands School of Public Administration. In 2002, he was awarded a PhD from Utrecht University for his analysis of ten years of labour relations in the public sector. Since January 2015, he has been reappointed as a professor by special appointment at the School of Public Leadership at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Page | 7 Liam Earney Director, Jisc Collections Liam Earney became Director of Jisc Collections in April 2015, where he is responsible for all of Jisc’s licensing and negotiations on behalf of UK universities. He has been working with e-resources since 1997 when he joined the London School of Economics as a bibliographer. From the LSE, Liam moved to Jisc where he has been for the last 12 years in a variety of roles associated with content licensing, resource management and IPR. At Jisc, he has led negotiations for a large number of consortium agreements on behalf of universities and colleges in the UK and overseas, as well as working with museum libraries and the NHS. More recently, he has been responsible for Knowledge Base+; overseeing the review of Jisc’s portfolio of library support services; and leading discussion with publishers on the cost of hybrid open access. Diane Bruxvoort University Librarian and Director of Library, Special Collections and Museums, University of Aberdeen Diane Bruxvoort joined the Library, Special Collections and Museums at the University of Aberdeen as University Librarian and Director in the spring of 2014. She joined from the University of Florida where she was the Senior Associate Dean, serving as deputy to the Dean of Libraries, with responsibility for collections, acquisitions, cataloguing, public services, digital services, and special collections. Previously, Diane worked at the University of Houston Libraries for ten years, starting as the Head of Access Services and ending her time there as the Associate Dean for Collections. While at Houston, she provided leadership for a major building programme which led the transition to electronic access to journals, and affected a major redesign of the library website. Before moving into academic libraries, she spent seventeen years working in public libraries in and around Houston, Texas. Diane is President of the Library Leadership, Administration, and Management Division of the American Library Association and is quickly becoming involved with collaborative library groups in the UK. Page | 8 SCONUL Winter Conference 2015 Professor James Wilsdon Professor of Science and Democracy, University of Sussex James Wilsdon is Professor of Science and Democracy in the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex where he is also Director of The Nexus Network, an ESRC-funded initiative to link research, policy and practice across food, energy, water and the environment. In 2014, James was asked by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to chair an independent review of the role of metrics and indicators in the UK research system, which published its final report The Metric Tide in July 2015. In 2015, James was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, the UK's national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences. He is also one of the editors of the Guardian's political science blog on science, technology and innovation policy. He is also the convenor for SPRU's MSc in Science and Technology Policy and teaches modules 'Science, Institutions and Power' and 'The Political Economy of Science Policy.' From January 2016, James will be taking up a new post as Director of Policy, Impact and Engagement in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield, which he will combine with a Chair in Research Policy in the Department of Politics. Frances Pinter Founder, Knowledge Unlatched and CEO, Manchester University Press Frances Pinter is the founder of Knowledge Unlatched – a new initiative that facilitates sustainable open access publishing. She is also the CEO of Manchester University Press. She was the founding Publisher of Bloomsbury Academic and ran the Churchill Archive digitisation project. Previously she was Publishing Director at the Soros Foundation (Open Society Foundation). In the late 1990s, she devised the business model for EIFL, the world’s largest library consortium. She has been a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics. She founded Pinter Publishers that owned Leicester University Press and established the imprint Belhaven Press. Frances also holds a BA from New York University and a PhD from University College London. Page | 9 Sue White Director of Computing and Library Services, University of Huddersfield Sue White is Director of Computing and Library Services at the University of Huddersfield where she has overseen the development of the University Press. As Chair of the Northern Collaboration, a group of 25 higher education libraries in the North of England, Sue has been involved in many initiatives which explore collaborative models of service delivery including the development of an out-of-hours enquiry service. Active in SCONUL for many years, Sue is currently a member of the SCONUL Collaboration Strategy Group. She is undertaking a doctorate which explores leadership transitions between public and private sectors. Graham Stone Information Resources Manager, University of Huddersfield Graham Stone is Information Resources Manager at the University of Huddersfield where he manages information resources, the University Repository and University Press. Graham has been involved with a number of Jisc projects including Huddersfield Open Access Publishing and the open access best practice pathfinder project. He is co-author of OAWAL (Open Access Workflows for Academic Librarians) and TERMS (Techniques in E-Resources Management) with Jill Emery of Portland State University and is undertaking a doctorate at Huddersfield investigating the viability of the university press as an open access publisher. Chris Banks FRSA Director of Library Services, Imperial College London Chris joined Imperial College in September 2013 as Director of Library Services. She had previously worked at the University of Aberdeen where she was University Librarian and Director of Library, Special Collections and Museums, and at the British Library where she spent over 20 years in a variety of curatorial, management and strategic roles. At Aberdeen, Chris was the library lead on the award-winning £57m library project,The Sir Duncan Rice Library, which was opened by the Queen in September 2012. Chris is active in LERU, LIBER and in RLUK where she is an elected board member. She has a particular interest in open scholarly communications and is enjoying the many publisher innovations which have arisen from UK open access policy developments. She continues her interest in music, acting as trustee to a number of music research organisations as well as being an elected Vice-President of the Royal Musical Association. Page | 10 SCONUL Winter Conference 2015 Paul Feldman Chief Executive, Jisc Paul is the chief executive of Jisc, the UK higher, further education and skills sectors’ not-for-profit organisation for digital services and solutions, a position he took up in mid-October 2015. Most recently Paul was an executive partner at Gartner UK, a technology research and advisory firm. Paul spent over 20 years in financial services at Nationwide Building Society, Barclays Bank and First Data EMEA, both in IT and business roles. He has also worked in knowledge-based IT companies including Thomson Reuters Legal UK and the Intellectual Property Office. Paul has a track record in introducing innovative solutions, was in the vanguard of the first moves to use the internet for commercial purposes, and led the work that resulted in sameday payments between bank accounts. Martin Eve Senior Lecturer in Literature, Technology and Publishing, Birkbeck, University of London Dr Martin Paul Eve is Senior Lecturer in Literature, Technology and Publishing at Birkbeck, University of London. He is the author of three books: Pynchon and Philosophy: Wittgenstein, Foucault and Adorno (Palgrave, 2014), Open Access and the Humanities: Contexts, Controversies and the Future (Cambridge University Press, 2014), and Password [a cultural history] (Bloomsbury, 2016), as well as many journal articles. In addition, Martin is the Director of the Birkbeck Centre for Technology and Publishing; is a founder and director of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded Open Library of Humanities platform; was a member of the HEFCE Expert Reference Panel for open access monographs; and a member of the Jisc National Scholarly Communications Advisory Group. Loughborough University Page | 29 Page | 30 SCONUL Winter Conference 2015 SCONUL Strategy 2016-19: Collaborating for Change SCONUL’s core strength is its collaborative approach to the challenges we face and this has been reflected in the responses to our recent call for members to take forward the projects and programmes set out in our 2016-2019 Strategy. We will begin work on these early in 2016. Vision for the development of the academic library This work will explore and shape how the key functions and form of the academic library will be transformed over the next decade, and by implication, describe the modern academic library. The Transformation Strategy Group will lead on this work. A national digital library for UK higher education SCONUL will develop a shared vision for the future of above-campus services for the UK HE library sector. The aim is not to produce a blue print for a monolithic service but a vision for the practical development of shared library services. The Collaboration Strategy Group has already undertaken initial work in this area and will take this forward in 2016. Leadership capacity building This work will focus on building collective and individual leadership capacity across the sector. The Leadership Task and Finish Group will work for 18 months to establish formal and semiformal structures for mutual support for directors to share information and expertise, and to address the development of leaders in the academic library sector more broadly. Cost of content The Content Strategy Group will work with partner organisations towards the development of a scholarly communications model which widens access to knowledge for our users at an affordable cost. We will argue for disruptions to the current model and make the case for the extension and development of open access. Advocacy This work will take place across the organisation to deliver advocacy materials for use by SCONUL and individual members, based on the programmes above. The Communications Advisory Group will support the organisation to promote understanding of the value of the library’s contribution to institutional mission and performance.
