The Insurance Commissioner will be discussing insurance-related bills at the Legislature and
what is happening in the insurance market.
J.P.Schmidt was appointed Insurance Commissioner for the State of Hawaii February 2003.
Previously, he was a partner in the law firm of Crockett Nakamura & Schmidt in Wailuku, Maui,
Hawaii. In the 1990’s, Mr. Schmidt was the Corporation Counsel for the County of Maui, after
serving as Deputy Corporation Counsel advising Budget and Finance. Before moving to Maui in
1989, Mr. Schmidt was an Officer with the Dai Ichi Kangyo Bank, Los Angeles Agency, in
Commercial Lending, with Coldwell Banker Commercial Group, Inc., sold trucks, was a Real
Estate Broker and was an Emergency Medical Technician for Schaeffer Ambulance.
Mr. Schmidt received a Juris Doctorate from University of California at Davis, Martin Luther King,
Jr. Hall School of Law, and a B.A. in Philosophy from UCLA.

Presidents-elect training seminar
The presidents-elect training seminar helps
presidents-elect from the more than 32,000 Rotary
clubs worldwide to prepare for their terms. Incoming
club presidents learn about their roles and
responsibilities, goal setting, club administration, and
member recruitment, education, and retention. The
meeting is an opportunity for incoming club
presidents to build strong working relationships with
their district governor-elect and incoming assistant
governors.

March – Literacy Month (program by Tommye Jones)
March 5-8 - PETS (President Elects Training Session,
San Jose, CA
March 28th – FY 2009-10 club officers and directors and
09/10 AG Lisa Rodrigues, new members, and other
members interested in District and International updates
will attend the District Assembly at Maui Community
College;
April (date to be determined) – Joint meeting of FY
2008-09 and FY 2009-10 officers and directors to
develop club strategic plan priorities and club
leadership plan;
April 25 – Rotary Work Day (partner with Food Bank);
May – Rotary Deadline Month
May 22nd to 25th – District 5000 Conference held at the
Turtle Bay Hilton, North Shore Oahu
June – Rotary Fellowships Month (program to be
determined. DRAFT strategic plan priorities and club
leadership team plan, including calendar, sent to the
membership for review and feedback
June – Rotary International Conference
July – New fiscal year begins and 2009 – 2010 officers
and directors assume responsibilities. Adoption of
strategic plan and club leadership plan.

District Governor Ayman El
Dakhakhni is hoping to hear from all clubs about the
great things they have been doing as Rotarians. He
announced the District 5000 Awards at a recent
Presidents meeting in Honolulu.
Clubs will be divided into four categories. There will
be awards given out to the 1st and 2nd place finishers
within each of the categories. Three categories will
be based on the following membership sizes (Size is
RI SAR beginning membership count as
of July 1, 2008). Rotary Club of Kahului
is designated as a medium sized club.
Small Club Division (15 clubs; 0-30
members) Medium Club Division (15 clubs; 31-47
members)
Large Club Division (13 clubs; (48 members and
above).
A fourth category will be comprised of those new
clubs which have been chartered between July 1,
2008 and March 31, 2009.

All club presidents will be given a form to complete
that will require some specific answers along with an
essay section. Judging will take place in phases.
The first phase is based on information provided on
the cover sheet that is submitted. The second
phase will be judged by club presidents who will
judge a group other than their own.
This year the large clubs will rate the medium clubs,
the medium clubs will rate the small clubs, and the
small clubs will rate the large clubs. The voting will
be online based on submissions posted by the clubs
seeking awards.
The third phase will consist of a review by the
District Governor and District Chairs of results from
Phase I and Phase II.

Fall District Conference, Sept. 26, 2009
District Governor Elect Lisa Foster
is planning to have a District
Conference in the Fall, rather than
in May (traditional Memorial Day
District weekend), to 'kick-off' the
Rotary year rather than 'looking
back' over the year. The focus of
DG Elect
this conference is to network with
Lisa Foster
other clubs in partnership projects,
plan the Rotary year and inspire/motivate each
other to accomplishing great things in service during
the upcoming Rotary year. A separate Awards
Banquet and Installation Ceremony will culminate
the Rotary year in June 2010.

HELP SUPPORT MAUI’S PROPOSED
ROTARY CLUB OF VALLEY ISLE SUNSET
Maui’s first sunset club is in the formation
stage. The sunset club offers a new
option on Maui, making it convenient for
people who cannot attend sunrise or
luncheon meetings. There are currently
16 people who have expressed interest
in joining the club (20 needed to charter the club).
Maui Clubs are asked to show support and attend
a meeting to share information about Rotary and
refer prospective members to the club. The club
