Greetings:
Welcome to the winter edition of IDEA Magazine. I write to you from Midland,
Michigan, where the chill of winter has set in but our energy in pursuit of
quality education continues to keep us warm. I’m pleased to connect with you
again through the pages of IDEA, where you’ll find information about your
fellow alumni and about many of our accomplishments during the last several
months.
This edition offers a glimpse into topics that are important as we strive to be
a university of influence for our alumni, students, communities and donors.
Our feature story explores the important connection between the arts and
business.
In this issue you’ll also meet our inductees into the 2014 class of Distinguished
Women alumni, seven women who join 350 others whose professionalism and
leadership are inspiring. On page 28, you will find the Athletic Hall of Fame for
our Michigan campus. This year we recognize Dallas Logan (Men’s Basketball),
Andrea (Raby) Pitts (Women’s Basketball), Lisa (Shepard) Mayes (Softball), Josh

other inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
All of these topics and others, when taken together, represent a vibrant
university, one that continues to instill the values of a strong free enterprise
system that promotes collaboration, partnership and an entrepreneurial spirit.
Importantly, this edition also shares a listing of our donors. Their generous and
ongoing support is so critical to our ability to maintain the Northwood Idea.

Art and Business
Partnership
at Work Once Again
One of the most exciting times
for a gallery occurs when a
business in the community is
interested in acquiring artwork.
It is exciting because a curator
then feels like an artist as well,
commissioned to suggest how
to “paint” entire premises with
just the right selection of art.
For many years, the Northwood
Gallery, a department of Northwood
University - where the university’s
belief in and commitment to the
beneficial interaction between the
arts and business is perhaps most
visible - has been instrumental in
supplying art to forward thinking
area corporations such as Dow
Chemical Company, Dow Corning
and Hemlock Semiconductors, all
global industries headquartered in
Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay region.
In summer 2014 another such opportunity
presented itself. This time it involved furnishing
the brand new Dow Corning building, in the
brand new Uptown Bay City project on the
Saginaw River bank. Being a part of this major
project was exciting in so many ways: a 43
acre vacant brownfield site was to become
a vibrant and sleek multipurpose urban area
with commercial, residential, retail, hospitality,
entertainment and medical contents. a plot
by the river became the site of a beautiful,
state-of-the-art new building with a curved
façade reminiscent of ripples on the river. The
architecturally enticing interior with many glass
walls and amazing views of the water was to
be turned into a stimulating and
productive place of work. Original art
by local artists was to a play a part in
this fascinating transformation.
The Northwood Gallery was given
clear and simple instructions:
large canvases, contemporary and
abstract style, most of it in bright
and vibrant colors. It was an easy
task because our area is extremely
fortunate to be home to many very
talented artists of national and
international acclaim. A list of artists
who “fit the bill” was immediately
in the making. The works of Kathy
Jones, Valerie Allen, Toni Swarthout,
Michelle Courier, Zizelda Moreira
immediately came to mind, each
very accomplished, each deeply
connected to this area. Only after the
list was complete, did I realize that
they were all women!
Kathy Jones, a doyen among
them, holds an MFA degree from
Central Michigan University, was
born and raised in Bay City. Her
first job after college was with Dow
Corning where she helped design
NORTHWOOD IDEAs7).4%2
www.northwood.edu
and implement the company’s first
computerized payroll system. Nationally
known Michelle Courier, whose work
can be found in many galleries in
California and Oregon, has a fine art
degree from the University of Michigan
and lives and works in her studio in Bay
City. Valerie Allen, a true Mid-Westerner
from southern Ohio, holds degrees from
the University of Cincinnati and CMU,
and is associated with the Midland
Center for the Arts, has made Midland
her permanent home. Toni Swarthout,
a Midland native, still another gifted
artist with a corporate experience in
actuaries, was born in Midland, studied
at Northern Michigan University in the
Upper Peninsula, and made her career
as an artist in Nashville, TN. Zizelda
Moreira, a talented artist from Brazil,
moved to Midland and made it her
home after her husband was transferred
to Dow’s Midland headquarters.
As successful corporations around
the world, and reputable business
schools in the U.S. know well, the role
of art in business is crucial. Exposure
to art promotes communication,
opens people’s minds, spurs efficiency,
productivity and creativity among
employees; it sends the message that
their employer cares to provide a vibrant
and stimulating work environment.
The same message is sent to customers
and visitors and they know that they
are dealing with an innovative business
full of vitality. And it is important to
note corporate art is not purchased
with direct profits in mind. Rather, it is a
sound investment into people’s wellbeing and motivation, which in turn
promotes financial success. Hence, it is an
indispensable asset.
Shaheen Development and Dow
Corning have made a number of
thoughtful choices with this project.
They requested original art created by
local artists and acquired through a local
gallery, confirming they had the best
interests in mind for the growth of the
entire community of which they are a
vital part. Their actions build upon the
companies’ positive image in the area.
The artists appreciate the underlying
commitment as well. Kathy Jones says:
“It is an honor to be a part of a
corporate collection. It is the
recognition and affirmation of
artists’ hard work…Art cannot
survive without sponsorships
like this.”
Toni agrees and adds: “It gives
employees an opportunity to be
exposed to original art which they
may not have at home. It is a strong
statement that the corporation cares.”
The companies have also to be
complimented on their choice of style.
Here the riverside, the architecture of the
building and the desired atmosphere
suggested abstract over representational
art. It is more thought provoking and
open to viewers’ own interpretations.
Colorist Kathy Jones sees her oil
paintings as expressive abstractions of
positive energy and motion that she
wants her viewers to understand in
their own ways; for Zizelda Moreira the
most important mission of her acrylics
is to awake people’s feelings; Valerie
Allen’s multi-media work, inspired by
Mid-Century modern architecture
and the scenery of her native land,
encourages viewers to recognize her
interest in the passage of time, in
processes and constant change. Toni
Swarthout attempts to demonstrate
in her representational abstract acrylic
paintings a close, symbiotic, inhale/
exhale relationship between the humans
and the trees: “Art is …a conscious way
of life”. Michelle Courier, also working
in acrylics, is best known for her
magnificent land-, sky- water- and other
scapes through which she expresses her
passion for light and nature. Her style
is representational impressionism and
her goal is to create an experience, to
“allow the viewers to feel as if they had
been there”. At the new Dow Corning
Uptown Bay City building Michelle is
represented by yet another of her styles,
her organized, geometric abstractions
which actually also play with the subject
of trees sporadically interjected into
planes of vibrant primary and secondary
colors.
What Dow Corning and Shaheen
Development have done is a perfect
illustration or our university’s long
standing philosophy, “the arts make
good business partners”. The project is
commendable. Although the Northwood
Gallery was not the only art supplier
for this amazing and large building, we
are very happy that we could act in our
best consciousness and help place an
admirable total of 26 canvases created
by these five remarkable women artists.
The arts and business partnership
indeed is at work again, and we are
ready to collaborate with more collectors
and businesses large and small, to create
inspiring environments.

Another
50 Years of
Success Begins
In a world riddled
with blooming small
businesses, struggling
large businesses, and
an unstable economy,
there is one consistency
– the Northwood Auto
Show. The 51st annual
show brought in more
than 60,000 people from
all across the country
to view more than 500
cars from an assortment
exceeding 65 dealers
and private collectors.
This year’s general chair
was Kristin Hammond,
the former Marketing
chair.

The 51st Annual
Northwood University
International Auto Show
brought many new
elements to the already
largest student-run
event of its kind in the
world.
There were two industry panels, the
VIP Panel, consisting of Andrea Riley
(Marketing Director of Ally Financial),
Scott LaRiche (Vice President of Lou
LaRiche Chevrolet, President of the
DADA, and chairman of 2014 NAIAS),
John Felice (VP, US Marketing, Sales &
Service of The Ford Motor Company),
Celeste Briggs (Director Women’s Retail
Network, General Motors), and Doug
Evans (EVP and Group Publisher of
Performance and Aftermarket Division,
Enthusiast Network). All these speakers
shared unique experiences of their
industry and participated in a great
question and answer section which
built even greater flames in the hearts
of students to begin their careers in the
auto industry.
On Saturday, there was an additional
speaker panel titled “Automotive
Female Leadership Panel”. Quite often
the achievements of women in the
automotive industry are overlooked,
however this group of women are just as
successful as their male peers. The panel
consisted of: Jody DeVere (Marketing
and Selling to Women Expert, AskPatty,
Inc), Bobbie Heron (Digital Sales and
Marketing Director at Garber Automotive
Group), and returning from the previous
day, Celeste Briggs. The students and
community attended the event to
learn about the struggles and rewards
achieved by these prosperous women.
In addition to the more than 500
vehicles on display, the division with the
greatest growth was the Aftermarket
Division. The entire Sloan parking lot
was dedicated to vendors and private
collections displaying the benefits of
aftermarket adaptions. As has been for
many years, Ken Lingenfelter generously
shares a portion of his collection with
the autoshow and he helped contribute
to the bountiful collection of Corvette’s,
America’s Car, to this year’s show. The
Stingray wasn’t the only new cars
hording all the attention, Ford brought
up two pre-production vehicles, the
Edge and the Focus – and they look
great.
This show would not have been a
success had it not been for the 500
students that work together in preparing
the show, designing booths, displaying
cars, selling food, guiding guests, and
many more areas they lend assistance.
Not only is the Auto Show a great event
for current students to network with
industry leaders and peers, but also
past alumni. The Auto Show Gala was a
success, raising almost $100,000 for the
advancement of the university. After
the homecoming football game, where
Terrence Stocker and Jordyn Walker were
crowned homecoming King and Queen,
Alumni mingled in Woody’s Taproom
well through the night reminiscing and
having a good time.
Applications for the 2015 NUIAS
General Chair just ended, so now we
wait to see who the next leader of the
world’s largest student-ran outdoor
autoshow. Hope to see you there! For

Northwood University International Auto
Show, or to see pictures and video from

“The Nova Nation is thrilled to welcome Coach Massimino
and Northwood back home to Villanova for this truly unique
celebration of our basketball heritage. Coach Massimino
and all of the young men he mentored during his time here
have made an enormous impact on our University. This is
one way we can express our gratitude to Coach, his family,
and the very special group of men he coached to the 1985
NCAA Championship, ” said Villanova University’s Head Men’s
Basketball Coach Jay Wright.
“Having the opportunity to play such competitive teams
makes for a great experience for our student athletes. The
opportunity to play on national television is something
very very special,” said Massimino of his group, which has
participated in both final and semifinal NAIA national
championship games, and since February, 2008 ranked
within the top 25 for 80 consecutive polls.

DALLAS LOGAN t.FOT#BTLFUCBMMt
Dallas Logan is one of the finest all-around players in the history of the
Northwood men’s basketball program. He finished fourth on the career
scoring list with 1,801 points and ranks first among players since 1990. In
Logan’s senior season, he became the only player in school history to lead the
team in scoring (20.2 ppg), rebounding (4.6 rpg) and assists (3.8 apg) in the
same season. He earned First Team All-GLIAC honors in each of his final three
seasons as a Timberwolf, during which he averaged 19.1 points per games
while shooting 52 percent from the floor. A First Team All-Region honoree in his senior season,
Logan played in all 109 games in his career. He led Northwood to the semifinals of the GLIAC
Tournament twice and one appearance in the GLIAC Finals in his sophomore season.
ANDREA (RABY) PITTSt8PNFOT#BTLFUCBMMt
Andrea Raby was one of Northwood’s first and best women’s basketball
players, playing on the first four women’s basketball teams in school history.
She still stands as the leading rebounder in school history, finishing her
four-year career with 800 rebounds. Raby also ranks 12th in school history
with 1,083 points, making her one of just three players at Northwood to have
over 1,000 points and 700 rebounds. Thirty years after her career ended, Raby
still ranks in the top 10 in Northwood history in field goals made, field goals
attempted, free throws made and free throws attempted. Raby averaged 14.2 points and 10.7
rebounds per game in the 1981-82 season, making her one of two players in school history to
average a double-double in a season. Her 10.7 rebounding average that season is the highest in
school history. Raby led Northwood in scoring twice and in rebounding three times during her
career.
LISA (SHEPARD) MAYES t4PGUCBMMt
Lisa Shepard was one of the most dominant players in Northwood softball
history. She finished her career with a 68-38 record in the circle with a 1.22
ERA. Shepard registered the second most wins and the highest winning
percentage (.638) in school history. She struck out a remarkable 792 batters
in her career, 184 more than any other pitcher in Northwood history. Shepard
guided Northwood to the NCAA Tournament for the only time in school
history in 2005, leading the team to the Regional final. Shepard was the key
player for the team as the Timberwolves won GLIAC Championships in 2004 and 2005. In those
seasons, Shepard went 47-12 with a 0.86 ERA while striking out 473 batters in 390.2 innings of
work. She owns the two highest single-season marks in wins (24, 23) and strikeouts (274, 199) as
well as the two lowest season ERAs (0.95, 0.78) at Northwood. A two-time First Team All-GLIAC
honoree, Shepard has 10 more career shutouts than anyone in school history (24).
JOSH WEBER t.FOT5SBDLBOE'JFMEt
Josh Weber was the premier men’s track and field competitor at Northwood
during the early 2000’s. He was a six-time All-American in three different
events, earning the honors in the 4X400 meter relay, the 400 meter dash
and the 800 meter run. During his career, Weber claimed three top-five
finishes at the NCAA Championships. His best finish came at the 2004 Indoor
Championships, where Weber finished second with a time of 1:50.48. He
also placed third in the 400 at the 2003 Indoor Championships (48.06) and
a fifth in the 800 at the 2004 Outdoor Championships (1:51.97). Weber saved some of his best
performances for the GLIAC Championships, where he won four individual titles. He was named
the GLIAC Male Athlete of the Meet at the 2003 Outdoor GLIAC Championships, where he claimed
the 200 and the 400 meter dashes. At the 2004 Outdoor GLIAC Championships, he set a meet and
Northwood record with a time of 1:49.27.
GARY WILLIAMS t$POUSJCVUPSt
Prior to the start of the 1996 football season, Northwood signed a deal with
WMPX in Midland to carry all of the Timberwolves football games live on the
radio. The person who became the voice of Northwood football was Gary
Williams, who served in the role as play-by-play man for 18 years. During that
time, Williams announced nearly all of the 193 games played with partner
and fellow Northwood Hall of Famer Larry Lindsey. Williams was on the mic
for three GLIAC Championship teams and three NCAA Playoff games. He was also a contributor
to Northwood Football Weekly and was a key part in the growth of the program. Williams’ hard
work, dedication and commitment to Northwood Football will always be fondly remembered by
everyone associated with the program.

Northwood brothers’ basement business becomes 25-year
success, co-host alumni gathering
Recently, brothers Vince and Frank Mucci celebrated the
25th anniversary of the creation of “Mama Mucci’s Pasta”
in Canton, Michigan. From a basement at the Kresge store,
the company now creates a million pounds of pasta a year,
recently securing distribution in Costco stores. This year,
they co-hosted an alumni event, alongside Joe Legato, Store
Manager of Bill and Rod’s Appliance, Inc. Alumni gathered
in Bill and Rod’s live test kitchen to taste test Mama Mucci’s
authentic rolled egg pastas. Using the same ingredients
and methods that their mother, Margherita Mucci, learned
from her mother, Vince and Frank hold to the traditional
standards.
Speaking to Vince, he remembers Dale Haywood, Bill
Spaulding, and Larry Reed as influential professors at the
Midland campus. His guiding decisions when choosing
Northwood was its focus on experiential learning. As this
business booms, he notes that his education still serves him
well.
We wish Vince, Frank, and Joe all the best in their future
endeavors!
