Tonight, we come together to celebrate a proud tradition of matching talented young people with opportunities to succeed in college and beyond, and to ensure their continued success. This evening we will recognize three honorees who embody the spirit and values of SEO: Henry R. Kravis and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., Kelly M. Williams, Managing Director and Global Head of The Customized Fund Investment Group, and The Honorable Julián Castro, Mayor of San Antonio (SEO Alumnus ’96). Their leadership is a reminder of the integral role each of us can play in shaping America’s future and the lives of bright young people everywhere. For UBS, our partnership with SEO first began back in 1982, and over the past 31 years nearly 550 interns have passed through our doors. Today, many of these individuals – ladies and gentlemen of character and capability – are having a significant impact on our company and the industry as a whole. And that’s important because, for me, having a diverse talent pool isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. Our world is evolving more rapidly than ever before, and so too must our companies. We need smart, capable young people who are reflective of the communities where we live and work, and the clients whom we serve. SEO is the organization that can help us do that. Through programs like SEO Scholars, they are ensuring that under-resourced students are prepared for college, graduate on time and have the skills to embark on challenging, rewarding careers in whatever fields they choose. The proof is in the results: 95% of SEO Scholars graduate from college. We have a lot to celebrate tonight, and as we recognize the accomplishments of the past, let’s also look confidently toward the future. Thanks to your generous support, SEO is strongly positioned to serve countless young people in the decades ahead. I appreciate all that you do on behalf of our nation’s youth. Please enjoy this special evening. Regards, Robert J. McCann CEO, UBS Group Americas SEO 50th Anniversary Awards Dinner SEO 50th Anniversary Awards Dinner SEO 50th Anniversary Awards Dinner May 15, 2013 Dear SEO Friends & Family, When we started Sponsors for Educational Opportunity in 1963, our intention was to open up opportunities for young people in underserved communities. I envisioned a day when they could become forceful and effective leaders in business, government, and philanthropy. Never did I expect SEO to become an organization with over 10,000 alumni operating programs across many cities in the United States and worldwide, including the United Kingdom, China, Vietnam, and now Africa. SEO began in New York City as an all-volunteer mentoring program that helped high school students from low-income families excel academically, get into and graduate from college and then go on to meaningful careers. Today, SEO offers three distinct programs: SEO Scholars is an academic program that eliminates the achievement gap for low-income high school students and supports them through college graduation; SEO Career is the nation’s premier summer internship and training program for underrepresented college students; and SEO Alternative Investments advances diversity in the alternative investments industry. SEO alumni have distinguished themselves in almost every field imaginable. All have made a commitment to improve opportunities for others, and of that I am most proud. SEO would not be where it is today, in countries around the world, without our dedicated staff, alumni, donors, and supporters. I thank you for your continued support. Fifty years ago, our country was in state of tremendous turmoil. Fortunately, we were also on the cusp of change. In the summer of 1963, Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech inspired us all with a new vision of equality and brotherhood – and SEO became a part of that movement. Though I still look forward to a time when ambition and intelligence alone will determine who succeeds in America, I trust that SEO will continue to open doors for deserving young people, and that those whose lives have been touched by SEO will continue to light a pathway of success for others. At this milestone celebration, we are incredibly grateful to be joined by many of our partners – both longstanding and new – who have made this event an unprecedented success and our work possible for the past 50 years. It is remarkable to reflect on SEO’s beginnings and now to see the dreams of more than 10,000 young people realized. Together, we are permanently improving the life prospects of talented young people by preparing them to excel in college and their careers. We thank tonight’s dinner chair, Bob McCann, for being a leading SEO supporter for more than 20 years and for spearheading the fundraising efforts for this event. We deeply appreciate the efforts of Bob and the UBS team to make this our most successful gala ever. This evening, we are honored to recognize three outstanding individuals who embody the values of SEO – a commitment to philanthropy and professional excellence: · Henry R. Kravis, a committed SEO Scholars supporter, and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., an inaugural partner of SEO’s Alternative Investments program. · Kelly M. Williams, a leader in private equity, who has helped SEO with its efforts toward increasing diversity in the alternative investments industry. · The Honorable Julián Castro, an SEO alumnus, Mayor of San Antonio, and visionary public servant dedicated to improving San Antonio’s economy and education system. SEO is proud to have built a model of success over the past 50 years that addresses important challenges in the 21st century – educational inequity and access to career opportunities. We hope you share our pride in the impactful results being achieved across all three of our major programs, including: · 95% of SEO Scholars graduate from college, compared to 54% of college students nationally · 75% of SEO Career interns receive full-time offers from our partners · 93% of SEO Alternative Investments fellows have received offers within the alternative investments sector It is because of your support that we are here today celebrating 50 years of matching talent with opportunity. The best part of this celebration is knowing what we can continue to achieve together in the years to come. We sincerely thank you for your partnership in our work. All the best, Walter K.
