PLANT “MILKWEED FOR MONARCHS” PROJECT
Kay MacNeil of the Garden Clubs of Illinois (GCI) is the chairperson of "Milkweed
for Monarchs" program, which is designed to help bring monarch butterflies to
Illinois. She has brought the project to the Frankfort Park District. Monarch butterfly
numbers are plummeting. Monarch butterflies cannot survive without milkweed.
It's the only plant on which monarch butterflies lay their eggs and the only

due to the loss of habitat from land development and because they are often

www.saveourmonarchs.org, the GCI project encourages planting milkweed in landscaping and gardens. The
Frankfort Park District is sowing milkweed seeds into our native prairies to encourage the strengthening of the
Monarch populations. You too can help bring back monarch butterflies, one milkweed plant at a time by planting
milkweed! Stop by the Frankfort Park District office to pick up milkweed seeds packets/flyers and make a donation
at the drop box (which goes to Save Our Monarchs, the seed supplier). The seed packets and donation drop box
are located at the front counter of the Founders Community Center at 140 Oak Street. We can all make a difference!

on Saturday, March 28, 2015. The completion was held at Governors State
University, University Park, Illinois. The dancers received awards and High

movement. Emma DeRubertis and Marissa Smith were awarded for their
choreography and performance to “Chandelier”, in the student choreography category. The troupe also placed Highest Overall for the Senior Small

category, to “BOSS”. The Footlights Dance Troupe is comprised of six girls;
Katie Wozniak, Marissa Coy, Kelsie Cavanaugh, Marissa Smith, Emma
DeRubertis, and Julia Pickham. Instructor Jen Ward began preparing her
students enrolled in the ballet, hip/hop, jazz, and tap programs, for this

said Ms. Jen. The Frankfort Park District would like to express their congratulations to all the girls on this huge accomplishment!

WATTS UP!
This class offers children a solid introduction to the properties
of electricity and electric charges. Children discover an electric
charge's basic properties, learn to distinguish between static electricity
and electrical current, and explore the science behind these phenomena.
Hands-on activities provide a tactile lesson in charging and discharging
objects with static electricity. Children will be able to relate a newfound
understanding of lightning and static-electric shocks—that may have
previously been confusing or even frightening—to their daily lives. They

GET FIT WHILE YOU SIT!
This class is perfect for “Older Adults” or as a “Starting Point” for beginner
exercisers. This class helps battle against osteoporosis, joint and back
pain, and falling – just to name a few. When we build muscle, we build
bone. When the muscles that support the spine and the joints are strong
and flexible, we have less pain and risk of injury. As we age, our ability
to balance declines. Since the consequences of falling for older adults
can be severe – even fatal – balance training is essential. The friendly
group setting allows older adults to stay socially connected. Exercises
are performed seated and/or standing using chairs, weights, and other
equipment, which are provided for you. No previous exercise experience
necessary.

SCHOOL ORGANIZATION
Have a child who has trouble staying organized at school? Are
you struggling to keep track of what is what in their school
work and homework? Come listen to a former teacher's aide who was assigned to help create organization systems to help students stay organized
and improve home to school communication. Instructor will share what
she is currently using with her own child who attends 157c and suffers
from ADHD and Autism. This system can be started as young as 3rd or
4th grade and you can build and add to the system as your child's
school demands change, all the way through high school. This system will
elevate stress on the student, teacher and parents. It includes a way to
organize subjects, paperwork, and even works in conjunction with specific
apps as the student grows into a more advanced way of organizing. Your
child is never too young or too old to start an organizational system. This
system can also be customized to fit your child's individual needs. It works
great for both special ed and regular ed students who need a little
assistance in organization.

LIFE LINE SCREENING
Adult Programs
A stroke occurs every 40 seconds and yet up to 80% of strokes can be
prevented. This is why Frankfort Park District is hosting Life Line Screening,
the nation’s leading provider of preventive health screenings on Saturday,
October 24. Screenings are fast, painless and affordable. Three key tests
check for blocked carotid arteries, an irregular heart rhythm called atrial
fibrillation, and high blood pressure, which are the three leading risk
factors for stroke. Nearly 800,000 strokes will occur this year, taking a
life approximately every four minutes.
Other tests check for abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the
arteries in the legs. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk
is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women. Many events
also offer blood tests, including cholesterol, glucose and c-reactive protein
screenings, as well as take-home colon cancer early detection tests.
Screening packages start at $139. Single tests cost around $70.

GLUTEN FREE SEMINAR
In this workshop you will learn what you need to know about
gluten and why you need to know it. Gluten-free diets and
gluten-free menus at restaurants have become more and more prevalent.
So what is gluten and what’s the big deal? Gluten is a sticky protein
found in wheat, barley and rye. The prevalence in wheat and wheat
products, especially processed and refined varieties, have led to a greater
percentage of individuals developing gluten intolerance. You or a loved
one may have a gluten intolerance. Join this seminar and learn the facts

No previous exercise experience
necessary.

BECOME A PERMANENT PART OF THE PLAYGROUND
Charitable Giving Options
Several years ago, Operation Playground installed a picket fence at Fort
Frankfort that not only provides safety and security for our children but
offers the community a way to remember or honor a loved one or
organization. For a $35 donation, you can have your name or a name
you choose engraved on one of the wooden pickets in the fence. This is
an opportunity to become a part of this amazing play space that was
designed and built by volunteers in the community. Years from now your
children and grandchildren will enjoy searching for your family names
and will remember that you were part of this community event.
BENCH MEMORIAL DONATION
The Frankfort Park District also offers a memorial black iron park bench
which can be placed in the park of your choice, with Park District approval.
A personal plaque will be attached to the bench. The donation fee is $800.
Please stop by the Founders Center for more information and to see a sample
of the bench in the entrance hallway.
Go to frankfortparks.org to download an application.

OPERATION PLAYGROUND FOUNDATION
Operation Playground Foundation sponsored the creation of the Frankfort
Bark Park at Commissioners Park, which opened in May 2007. Fundraising
is on-going in order to provide additional enhancements to the Bark Park
and other parks. For more information, please call the Park District office
The Frankfort Park District is proud to continue a MemorialTree Program to
plant trees in parks for all Frankfort residents to enjoy. Through this
program, you can honor or remember a person, an event or an organization
by having a tree planted in their name. A tree can be given to celebrate
someone’s birthday, to memorialize a deceased, commemorate a special
event in your life or recognize an organization and their accomplishments.
A donation of $350 will purchase a tree in a park designated by the donor
or honoree. Trees will be planted in the spring and fall each year. In addition,
the year, along with the name of the person, event or organization being
honored, will be proudly displayed on Plaque at the base of the tree. This
program benefits the community as a whole, and the tree can be enjoyed
for years to come.
For all information regarding the Living Tree Program, contact the Park
District office in the Founders Community Center at 469-9400. The Park
District will assist you in selecting a park where trees are needed.
