PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome Back from Summer Recess
Summer is over and it is now a very busy time for our Lions Club! We need to all
focus on the upcoming fund raisers. The Apple Sale comes first in late September, early
October. The Golf Tournament is next, scheduled for Monday October 27th. The
Christmas tree sale comes in late November and December. There is enough on our
plates for everyone to get involved. We need everyone in the club to participate to make
each event a success.
All varieties of apples are in good supply. Prices, I am told, will be a bit higher this
year than previous years but the quality and quantity is available. Sales sheets, with
pricing and varieties, will be given out at the September 15th meeting. Start contacting
your customers now to get a head start on orders.
The Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, October 27th at Bradshaw Farms. We
will need GOLFERS, DOOR PRIZES,HOLE SPONSORS, and volunteers to staff the
sign in table and help with the running of the tournament. Contact Jeff Hammen to offer
your assistance. I challenge each member to help make this a successful event.

7th Annual Charity Golf Outing
The Golf Club at Bradshaw Farms
Monday, October 27, 2008
There is plenty of time to recruit golfers (individuals, twosomes, threesomes
and foursomes) and sponsors. We would like to see each Lion recruit golfers
and hole sponsors. Golfing costs $150/golfer or $500/foursome. If you do
not have a foursome we will pair you up with somebody else. Hole
sponsorships are available for $125/ hole. Each hole sponsor will have a sign
made by American HoleinOne. This is a great way to advertise your
business. Registration forms are available online and will be mailed to each
member and to previous participants. They have also been distributed
around town
Volunteers: We will need volunteers again this year for the registration desk
(early morning), putting contest (end of day), million dollar shot (end of day)
and hole-in-one witnesses (all day). Contact Lion Jeffrey Hammen if you
have any questions or would like to volunteer.

membership list and Frances sends some changes to International. If you

CLUB NEWS
MELVIN JONES FELLOWS
At the June meeting, Melvin Jones Fellowships were
presented to PP Jeff Hammen and Lion Pat Welden.
PP Hammen, in addition to serving as President of the Roswell Lions,
he has served as newsletter editor. He has chaired the Golf Tournament, Adopt-A-Stream, Rivers Alive, Peace Poster and Young Ambassador’s Contest. He established the club website and the website for
District 18A. His work on the District website earned him an International President’s Certificate of Appreciation in 2002. On the district
level he has served as Technology Chair from 2001- 2007 and District
Youth Chair in 2003-2004. He continues as our club Webmaster.
Lion Welden was a Roswell Lion until he and Lion Ann Welden
transferred to the Lions Club in Anderson, South Carolina. Lion Pat
served as Membership Chairman and on the Board of Directors. He
was active in the Golf Tournament, the Tree Sale, and all other club
projects. He secured numerous door prizes and could be counted on
to volunteer whenever the club called on him.
SEPTEMBER MEETING
Aubrie Lucas, an 11 year old
blind student, was one of only 60
contestants nationally to qualify
for the Braille Challenge
competition in Los Angeles. The
Roswell Lions donated $350 to
assist the family in their travels
to Los Angeles. Aubrie and her
Mother, who is also blind, will
attend our meeting and recount
their experiences in the
competition. Although Aubrie
was not a winner in her age
group, just being one of
the 60 contestants was an
accomplishment
.
THANK YOU
ROSWELL LIONS
During an exam by Alpharetta Eye Associates, a young girl was
diagnosed with keratakonis, a disease where the cornea is very
misshapen and can cause a lot of astigmatism It can usually be
helped by wearing rigid, gas permeable contact lenses.
Dr. Weirich, recommended the rigid contact lenses, and through
the cooperation of Alpharetta Eye Associates and the Eyesight
Roswell program, they were provided. In a recent note from
Dr. Weirich she said, ”Rigid gas perm contacts to help this
keratakonis young lady. She is seeing 20/80 and 20/30
and is very happy. Thank You”
ADOPT A ROAD
On August 30th, Lions Kartley, Dunn,
Parsons, and Robinson policed the R/W on
Wileo Road.
Chairman Vince Kartley has scheduled a
pick-up on Wileo Road for September 27th
to coincide with the Rivers Alive Day in
North Fulton. A festival on September 27th
at Riverside Park from 9-12 will honor all
volunteers in these programs in Roswell.
Our monthly pick-up dates will then change
to the odd numbered months.
STEAK COOKOUT
Thanks to President Phil and Fran for opening their home to the
Roswell Lions for our steak cookout on August 16th. A total of 35 Lions
and family members enjoyed this event that closed out the summer
activities. Also thanks to Lion Frank Toler for securing the excellent
steaks and potatoes and to Lion Chef Bill Parsons for his labor over
the hot grills on a warm evening.
EYESIGHT ROSWELL UPDATEEyeglass Program--The program is working well. We receive eye exams & eyeglasses @ $80 and $85
from Roswell Eye Clinic & Alpharetta Eye Associates and Lencrafters. This program has helped 83
people for 2008 YTD receive an eye exam and eyeglasses and contact lenses for a special needs child.
The eyeglass program is in place for the Roswell City Schools, Senior Services of NF, The Drake
House, Homestretch, N Fulton Charities and Roswell Nursing. It was decided by the ER committee
that we would offer kindergarten students in the City Schools an eye exam and eyeglass program with
AEA and LC. Lencrafters will continue to provide eyeglass repair visits to Roswell Nursing and
Senior Services of North Fulton.
A hearing aid program at SSNF has been offered. We continue to work with the Lighthouse on this
program. We need a volunteer to handle this program.
Providing Camp scholarships will be offered to those in need. Teachers of sight impaired students in
Roswell will be visited to determine if our Club can make a contribution to students in these special
school classrooms. We are also planning to review the Eyesight Roswell program with the Roswell
City School social workers in September as the new school year is starting.
Tim Dunn agreed to take on a co-chair position and is now handling requests from North Fulton
Charities. Thanks Tim! The goal is to eventually have a new chair person to lead ER and also recruit
other members to participate on the ER committee.
MISSION STATEMENT OF EYESIGHT ROSWELL
To provide sight and hearing care assistance to qualified and needy individuals in our
community of Roswell, that otherwise could not secure proper medical service through
private and public programs. Create and foster a spirit of understanding among our
Roswell neighbors, that through community involvement and action, we serve and care.

Lion Doris checked with the groves and learned this will be a good year for all types of apples.
We will plan to stick with Fujis, Braeburns, Mutsus, Granny Smiths, and Romes. We could
possibly get Red and Gold Delicious if a customer asks for them.
We found that there will be a price increase this year. The state of Washington did not have a
good year for apples and that will raise the market prices. We expect to have prices before the
September meeting and will have order blanks there. We will keep you advised if we hear
anything before then.
On a sad note, Lion Doris also learned that Don Odom, who delivered our apples for so many
years, died several months ago. Even after Don retired, he accompanied the new driver on the
delivery. We enjoyed seeing Don and I think he enjoyed watching us. Also, the driver that
replaced Don is poor health and no longer with the groves. We may have to meet and guide a
new driver to our location.
