Hello Friends,
I hope you’re all surviving the blizzards and cold weather out there. How cold
was it? Be careful walking, drive safe and be safe at work. Make sure your
smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
Speaking of smoke, some of you might remember a song I sang to you a couple
of years ago at the firehouse. This time I’ll cut right to the chase and get to the
point. Products of Combustion, Smoke, Particulates in suspension, Soot, Fire
Gases, Fuel Vapor, Tar, Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen
Cyanide, just to name a few, are not good for you. Products of combustion are
not good for your respiratory system. They will introduce toxicity into your
system, asphyxiate you, cause cardiac arrest; they will not afford you longevity.
They will kill you and they will kill you, fast. I witnessed how fast smoke can move
in a fire I was in, that's what made a believer out of me! In the year 2009 an
average of 5.75 people died in home fires every day, that's about one every 4.2
hours. A residential structure fire occurred once every 84 seconds, another one
could be reported by the time you read this. Smoke detectors and sprinklers are
good, but let’s not forget basic fire and smoke prevention.
Melissa Fiore and her team from Hilti Products will host the A.S.S.E. February
meeting at the Elmhurst Hilti Center; 135 West Diversey Ave, Elmhurst, Illinois,
see the flyer in the newsletter and RSVP by 2/20/15. Experience this great show.
One of the subjects will be the Fire and Smoke stopping procedure and
application. Furthermore, there will be a demonstration on anchors and tools
galore. Get your hands on the latest innovations from Hilti. ASSE and ASPE
members are welcome along with contractors and inspectors. Dinner and
refreshments will be served. Don't forget that our March 31st meeting will be
sponsored by Moen at Rocket Burger, 3700 North Clark St, Chicago, see flyer in
newsletter.
Sincerely,
Mike McGaughan

Overview of Firestopping
Fire Protection is a critical consideration for all those
who are responsible for creating the design,
specifications, and construction of new buildings. It also
has to be considered in the ongoing maintenance of
occupied premises.
The causes of fire vary and are unpredictable. Often the
cause is outside the area of influence of design
engineers and planners. But the ability to control the
spread of a fire once it has started can still be
influenced.
Effective fire control within a building is generally
achieved through a combination of active and passive
fire protection systems.
Active fire protection systems are designed to react to
the outbreak of a fire which is then suppressed with the
help of sprinkler systems, halogen installations, fire
extinguishers or other proactive mechanical systems.
Passive fire protection systems are integrated in the
structure of a building, restricting the spread of fire to a
fire compartment that is composed of fire rated walls,
floors and ceilings.
Firestopping is a passive form of fire protection by
protecting the voids created in rated walls, floors or
ceilings. Firestopping is designed to keep the fire
contained to a certain area and to minimize the amount
of smoke that travels throughout the building.
Hilti Firestopping Systems

Basic Situation
An uncontrolled fire can quickly become a danger for
people and property. Firestopping is generally aimed at
combating the undesired characteristics of fire. In spite
of numerous regulations and precautions, the outbreak
of fire can never be thoroughly and securely prevented.
Common sense and the careful handling of possible
sources of danger remain the most significant protective
measures.
How fire works
Three things must be present and happen for a fire to
break out:
timeframe for a flashover depends on the speed of the
spread of the fire and can vary between 3 and 15
minutes.
The temperature then rises as high as
approximately 1800°F.
Extinguishing:
As the flammable material is
consumed, the temperature drops. Once all flammable
material has been burned, the flames burn out or are
extinguished. The fire can also be stopped by the
removal of oxygen or by cooling the room through
extinguishing measures.
Origin
Development
Extinguishing
• There must be a source of heat (flames)
• There must be fuel available (wood, paper)
Temperature
• There must be oxygen (air)
Time
In a closed room a fire develops in three phases: origin,
development and extinguishment
Origin: In this phase the three factors in the triangle of
fire exist in a type of reciprocal relationship (depending
on the fuel present). The fire begins and the amount of
flammable materials contributing to the fire expands,
generating a great amount of smoke and a temperature
increase.
Development: The beginning of this phase of a fire is
characterized by a so-called flashover. This is the
spontaneous combustion of the existing flammable
materials contained in a closed room. This occurs if the
room temperature is between 1100°F and 1400°F. The

Insulation (T-Rating) – A measure of the insulation
properties of a component. This means the time it takes
for any point on the side of the component, facing away
from the fire, to reach a temperature of 325º F + the
ambient temperature.
Time-Temperature Curve: Standard test methods
require that the air temperature within the testing furnace
ramp up to a specified temperature within a specified
amount of time, and then maintain that temperature for a
specified period of time. This is done to simulate the
phases of a fire in a controlled environment.

How firestop products work
The principles of compartmentalization are to limit
the spread of a fire and to provide evacuation paths for
people in the building and that the fire can be effectively
extinguished. Depending on the height of the building,
the area, type of usage and location of the building, the
structure must be designed to contain the fire within
individual sections of the building for a certain period of
time (i.e., the “fire rating”).
Saving Lives through Innovation and Education
www.us.hilti.com
To withstand the high thermal and mechanical pressures
that apply during a fire, while maintaining the necessary
functionality, firestop products work in different ways.
Ablative:
When exposed to heat, the material chars and forms a
carbon-like, insulating layer that serves to protect
openings. (Examples: CP 618 Firestop Putty Stick, CP
617 Firestop Putty Pad)
Overview of Firestopping
January 2008 • Issue 23
Intumescent with pressure:
When exposed to heat, the material swells, producing a
great deal of pressure.
The pressure can cause
openings or spaces to be fully closed off from the fire.
(Examples: FS-ONE Intumescent Firestop Sealant, CP
643N/644 Firestop collars, CP648E/S Firestop Wrap
Strip, CP653 Speed Sleeve)
Insulating:
Insulating materials conduct warmth and heat poorly,
making it difficult to transfer the heat. (Examples: CP
620 Fire Foam, mineral wool)
Page 4
Applications for firestopping can range from walls, floors,
and ceilings, which can consist of various materials.
The following areas must be considered when planning:
•Perimeter joints
•Construction joints
•Through Penetrations
Carbonized:
When burned, the material forms a hard crust in an
opening. (Examples: CP 606 Flexible Firestop sealant)
Non-flammable material:
Non-flammable materials do not disintegrate during a
fire. (Examples: CP 637 Firestop Mortar)
Reduced expansion of flames:
The material does not contribute fuel or energy to the
fire. The flames die out as a result. (Examples: CP
601S Elastomeric Firestop Sealant)
.
Range of Application
The image on the right shows several typical
applications to consider when discussing firestop.
The fire-rated integrity of openings and gaps in fire rated
compartments such as building joints or openings for
services must be restored to restrict the passage of
flames, smoke and gasses for the endurance of the
hourly assembly which was breached. Hilti firestop
products are designed, tested and approved for the
protection of both life and property from the effects of
fire, smoke and noxious gasses, thereby minimizing
damage and losses.
To prevent the uncontrolled
spreading of a fire, the walls and ceilings of a fire
compartment must be able to contain the fire and
prevent its spread for a particular period.
The Problem areas are:
(1,2) - Construction joints (3) – Top of wall or perimeter
joints (4) – Metal and plastic pipes (5) – Plastic pipes (6) –
Multiple penetrations (7,8,9) – Cable trays (10) – Electrical
Outlet Boxes (11) – HVAC Ducts

Test or Evaluation Methods
Hilti has over 800 tested systems which provide
solutions for openings through rated walls or floors.
These solutions have been proven to help minimize fire
damage and provide life safety. The test standards for
through penetration firestop testing is ASTM E814 (UL
1479). For joints, ASTM E1966 (UL 2079) is utilized.
Other standards that apply to firestopping include
ULC-S115-05M (firestop testing for Canada), ASTM E
84 (flame spread/smoke development), and ASTM E
2307 (Perimeter Joints). In some cases, Engineering
Judgments may be required to address conditions not
tested. These are recommendations provided typically
by the firestop manufacturer.
Firestopping is addressed in the International Building
Code in the sections shown in the table below.
Building Codes
Throughout the entire firestopping process, whether it is
specification, installation through an independent HiltiAccredited Firestop Contractors, or inspection, Hilti will
be there to offer job site support and expertise. The Hilti
highly trained sales force, Fire Protection Specialists,
Field Engineers, and in-house Fire Protection
Engineering Team can help you select the correct
products and systems to match your specific project
needs. Hilti has a support package that is unmatched in
the passive firestop industry.
The main driver of firestop and its installation in the
building construction industry depends on the local and
National Building Codes. These codes are written by
National organizations and then adopted on the state
and local level of government. Local building officials
then enforce plan design and the actual building
process based upon these codes.

Simplicity 101
The Brain, R the world’s first digital recirculating valve, will simplify your hot-water system.
Mechanical thermostatic mixing valves
were not designed to mix hot water. Yet in a
pump recirculated hot-water system under
zero demand, that’s exactly what they’re
asked to do. To get it right, you have to add
an assortment of compensating system
components. Simplify your hot-water system
with the new Brain R , DRV80 digital recirculating valve, engineered exclusively for
recirculating hot-water systems.
