he Inland Empire Arabian Horse
Club is an enthusiastic, dedicated
group of horse lovers who continue to
excel in their promotion of the Arabian
horse and their charitable efforts within
the community.
Over the past several years the
Club has Donated well over $100,000
to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children
in Spokane who provide the highest
quality care for a wide range of pediatric
orthopaedic and neuromusculoskeletal
disorders and diseases.
Our primary activities to promote the
Arabian horse include its Class A backto-back shows held during the Memorial day weekend at the Spokane Fair &
Expo Center.
Our shows have grown in reputation
and stature over the years. 2015 was our
first ARABIAN HORSE EXTRAVAGANZA,
which entertained a wide range of
people throughout the community
(standing room only). They came to
watch, scream and clap for their favorite
horse.
Every year our membership is growing
and expanding with great new ideas. We
have something planned every month
from farm tours to poker trail rides. Our
youth group is an outstanding group of
kids with a lot of talent and knowledge.
They offer activities every month. The
kids are always very welcoming to new
youth members, so don’t be shy if you
want to join.
2016 Plans are in the works for this
year’s Class A back to back horse shows.

conformation of the Arabian horse.
Western Pleasure will mesmerize you.
Watch these beautiful horses moving to
the slow calming music while showing
their style and grace.
Hunter Pleasure is always a very
large class, so pick out your favorite and
see if the judges agree. English Pleasure
is always exciting. You are witnessing
beauty in motion!! One of the most
popular is Native Costume. In this class,
horse and rider wear Americanized
versions of Bedouin garb complete with
tassels and embroidery. They perform at
the walk, canter, and hand gallop.

Riding the West

The Back Country Horsemen of Washington has three local
chapters in and around the Spokane area. Should this article
make it outside the Spokane area, I would like to remind
the reader that there are other chapters around the state of
Washington and they can be found online at www.BCHW.org.
Now the big question is why should you become involved?
I will attempt to give you several reasons; first and foremost
we as an organization exist for three reasons—One is to furnish
a labor force to keep trails open with physical labor. Second, by
our annual dues, fundraisers, and donations, we raise money
to have a part-time lobbyist in Washington to help us get the
funds necessary to keep the National Forest operational to
some extent. Third, by being an organization, we have a large
membership by keeping our members updated as to what is
happening in Washington. They are able to write letters, send
emails, or make phone calls to their legislators letting them
know that we are watching how they vote on the bills that
affect us and our pleasures. A perfect example of this is just
recently a bill went before Congress where an attempt was
made to cut funding for the Recreational Trails Program. Most
of us do not know that a percentage of our gas taxes go to this
program. Two senators presented a bill to take that money and
put it toward something else, thus eliminating the Recreational
Trail Program nationwide. We were able to prevent this with
thousands of emails and phone calls in less than 48 hours.

I mentioned in the last paragraph physical labor. What kind
of labor is it that we do? I will give you some examples that you
may be familiar with. Members of BCHW built the arena in the
equestrian area of Riverside State Park, as well as the Round
Pen, and they also built a number of the holding pens in the
campground before the expansion this year. BCHW members
also paid for and built the obstacle course in Riverside State
Park. That took three years of planning just to get the approval
from the state plus the actual work. BCHW members performed
a majority of the labor for the parking area at Slavin Ranch and
built the bridge at Liberty Lake. BCHW members are currently
involved in developing the parking area and trail system at
Rustler Gulch in the Eloika Lake area. This project has been
ongoing for about three years. That is just a little bit of the work
performed in the Spokane area within the last couple of years.
This does not include the days in the saddle clearing a variety
of trails of overgrowth and downed trees. Most of this work
is performed in early spring or throughout the summer. One
advantage of having a large group is that no one has to do a lot
of work if everyone does a little here and there.
Besides work, is there another reason why you should join?
I would answer that this way—do you know all there is to
know about horses or riding? Is there any chance you think
you might desire to learn something from someone else? Do
you know where all the trails are? Would you like to learn new
trails? Do you like to hang out with horse people, or people
with the same interest you have? Is there something you would
like to learn? Most BCH chapters have members with varying
degrees of experience—people who are just beginning in
horses to expert packers and excellent horsemen. Most are
willing to share their knowledge, if not at a meeting, perhaps
at a chapter clinic. Some clinics are for chapter members or
BCHW members only. Others are open to the public with a
charge and free to BCHW members. Quite often educational
information or training is given at each meeting. If there is
something you want to know or you need help with most of
the time, you only have to ask and, if it is at all possible, you
will receive the help requested. Hope to see you soon at a

Sensible Hoof Handling
Spring is here and the horses are ready to be trimmed in
preparation for riding to begin. But is your horse an easy one
for the farrier or is it a toss of the coin every time he shows
up as to whether your horse will be good or bad this time?
You owe it to yourself and your farrier to teach your horse to
handle its feet safely and calmly every time it’s needed.
It’s always interesting to listen to my farrier as I hold my
horses for him to work on. He tells of the horse he can do all
four without even putting on a halter. And he tells of those
who try to kick his head off. There are ones that the owner
just tells him when and isn’t even there but the horse is so
good, he doesn’t need any help to get the job done. Then
there are the ones that have barely been handled, much less
had their feet worked with but the owner wants him to trim
and shoe them anyway. He is expected to spend the extra
time to take the risks and train the horse but is not to expect
any extra compensation for his time. Often, he just walks
away and encourages them to get the horse trained before he
will come back.
The good news is teaching a horse to handle its feet is not
that hard and can be done safely without the use of ropes and
gadgets in a fairly short amount of time. All you need is a safe
enclosure, a snaffle bit bridle and some patience. It is time
well spent and your horse will get lighter in the bridle while
learning this valuable lesson.
My goal is to connect
you with your horse by
teaching you sensible,
hands-on exercises that
will reduce frustration
Take your horse to your
enclosure and put on the
bridle. This may be easier
said than done with some
horses so if your horse
needs work to get him to
this phase, don’t try to skip
steps in his education just to
get his feet trimmed. If he is
hard to catch, you may have
to funnel him into a round
pen, work with him to learn
to be caught on cue, get
control of his head, respond well to a head-down cue, etc....
But those are another set of lessons.
When you feel comfortable and have the bridle on, tie the
reins up out of the way. Make sure they are loose enough for
your horse to turn its head around to its side or take them off
if this is easily done. Then hook a 10’-12’ line to the left side
of the bit. Facing the horse’s left side, pick up on the rein with
the left hand. Take the slack out by moving your left hand
towards the top of the hip and wait for him to step his left
hind leg to the right before releasing the rein. Repeat this in
sets of 10 on each side with a short pause between each step
until you can move his hip easily away from you with only
the pressure of the rein.

Starting with the left front foot and the line hooked on the
left side of the bit, you are ready to find your starting place
with the foot. Your horse may already handle its feet well
for cleaning them but needs work putting them in position
for the farrier. Your horse may just get impatient and tell you
when it is time to put the foot down. Or you may have a
horse that is scared of even having you run your hand down
its leg. You need to find a safe starting point with your horse
and build from there so you don’t get hurt and your horse
learns what you are trying to teach him. By breaking the lesson into little steps, it reduces the struggle and you get to
your goal a lot quicker.
Stand facing the rear of the horse. The lead should be held
in your left hand between you and the horse with almost all
the slack out of the line. Run your hand as far down the leg
as the horse will allow without moving. Stand up and pet the
horse, letting him know this is all you wanted. Do lots of reps
until you can touch the whole leg and foot.
When you are ready to pick up the foot, let’s teach the
horse to shift his weight off the leg and even pick it up for
you. I do this by pinching the tendon just below and behind
the knee gradually until the horse just starts to shift its weight
to the right. Release and praise. Again, repeat until he will
shift his weight and actually pick his foot up a little ways.
Eventually, start to hold the foot for a couple seconds building up to holding it longer and longer. This is much easier
than trying to wrestle the foot up by force.
Here is the key to him not just pulling the foot away or
moving off. Every time he moves off or jerks his foot away,
immediately move his hip to the right in a tight circle. I don’t
mean make him go forward in a circle around you. Pick up
on the lead, take his nose towards his hip and move his hip to
the right in a pivot on the forehand. Have him step 4-5 times
over, release, settle him and go right back to work with the
foot. He will soon learn that what you are asking him to do is
not hard and moving his hip over takes more effort.
When you move to the back foot, it is a little different. For
the left hind, hold the lead in your right hand and use your
left hand to work the leg. This turns your back more to the
horse and puts your legs in a better position just in case the
horse would kick. By having control of the nose and the hip,
you are also safer by being able to move the hind feet away
in case of a kick.
By using this sequence, you can advance his foot handling
to any level you have in mind. Depending on your starting
place, you can fix an educated horse that is just being a brat
in a matter of minutes or get a scared one solid in a few
weeks. With a scared one, take just one foot a day for 2 or 3
days before going to the next foot. I usually do both fronts
before the backs but that is up to you. I strongly urge you to
spend some time getting your horse ready for the next time
his feet need done and your farrier will greatly appreciate any

The Weather
There is at least one thing that separates agricultural people
from their office-working brothers...the weather.
How often have you seen the local anchorman turn to the
local weather girl and say, “Gosh, Marsha, that’s really good
news! I’m sure getting tired of this rain!”
What’s he getting tired of? Having a soggy newspaper on
the porch? Having to wear his goulashes from the office to
the health club? Postponing the wearing of his new all season
Nikes? He’s probably not gettin’ any tireder of it than the
feedlot cowboy sloggin’ through the pens in hock deep mud.
Or the Iowa range hog man slidin’ his feed wagon along the
bank of the north pasture.
But somewhere, out beyond the cattle guard, a farmer is
standing at the edge of a quarter section of winter wheat,
watchin’ it rain and smilin’.
A skiff of snow, a two inch rain, five days of hot and dry, a
four foot drift and minus twenty-five wind chill factor are like
person to person calls to someone whose livin’ depends on
the weather. When the big city weatherman’s map has a yellow
sun with a smiley face that covers the Louisiana Purchase, you
realize how far from nature some parts of our civilization have
been removed!
Great skiing weather can often be translated to baby calves
on the kitchen floor, frozen water lines and chopping ice.

Krisean Performance Horses “Life With the Blue-Eyed Wonders”

Boy, what a wild west of a political scene this year, I thought,
as I put down the morning newspaper and wandered outside
for some fresh air. I headed for the stallion corrals as the horses
with their common horse sense just always grounded me.
Then I saw it. A huge sign was hung on the barn that said
“Commander for Commander”! NOW what was Commander
my big, white, Quarter Horse stallion up to! I charged toward
his pasture to have a talk. It is a mixed blessing to have
a talking horse as they seem to come with a perplexity for
stirring up trouble!
Commander was in an intense over-the-fence conversation
with Timer, my Arabian stallion. That always meant trouble!
The big blue eyed wonder was perfectly groomed and sporting
a toothy horse grin that any politician would be proud of.
“Soooo, Commander what’s up?” I tried to be casual but
then just lost it! “And WHAT is that sign?!”
“Well, I have decided to run for office in our national Horse
Congress” Commander said, as he causally turned toward me.
“You know, we do have a political governing body for horses
akin to your political system. Ours is more farm based than
farce based.”
“What!? You have a national horse political system!?”
I sometimes wondered just how much I didn’t know about
horses. “We have a Commander as our head horse instead
of a president.” Commander patiently explained. “Don’t you
think my slogan “Commander for Commander” is just SO
politically catchy?! I’m a natural to win!”
“I suppose you have a ‘Secretary of Stable’ too?” I said
sarcastically and then from the look he gave me, I guessed I
was right!
“There is also a mare running for office who is after all the
mare votes.” Commander continued“There has never been a
Commanding MARE before. I don’t know if she can handle it.
She claims we’re sexist!”
“Well ...... you ARE stallions!” I said, trying not to really take
a side here. “And there is the fact that many herds of horse are
run by the alpha mare...”
“My biggest opponent surprised us all.” Commander ignored
my comment. “He’s a little Shetland guy with a really unruly
forelock of hair! It would fall in his eyes if he didn’t plaster it
into place with a ton of ShowSleeze Mane Hair Spray! He’s all
about running the horse kingdom like a business. But even as
a little guy himself I’m not sure he’s really going to help the
little guy out there. And would he really respect mares?”
Commander, warming to his subject, continued. “Why he
shocked us all with his rhetoric about who should be our

I was still trying to take this all in, but horse sense isn’t always
human sense. They do have their secrets!
“Mares always like a stallion in command, so to speak.”
Commander commented with his best political toothy grin.
“So my campaign is based on health care for mares, well, I
mean healthcare for all horses. I need the stallion and gelding
vote too. I call it CommanderCare!”

Some people may feel that no reasonable person should
breed a mare these days. With the advent of the ‘unwanted
horse’ issue they have a valid argument. There are horses in
the world today that seem to have no place. Whether they are
too old, too wild, or too whatever there are those individuals
who lack a place in humanity where they may serve a useful
function, or so it seems.
Near the end of his life the great western artist Charles M
Russell wrote, “A few years ago a horse was considered kind
of handy to have around. He was needed everywhere and
used all ways. Uphill or down, mud or dust, he worked. They
made no good roads for him. There’s not a city in mighty near
the whole world he didn’t help build… Today some of these
auto drivers want to kill him off to make fertilizer out of his
body. Maybe I’m sentimental, but I think it’s a damned hard
finish for one that has been as good a friend to man as the
hoss.” Similar sentiments exist today, on both sides.
I was having a nice visit the other night from a couple of
friends who are probably half a generation older than I am.
Each of them told stories of growing up around horses and
experiences they had raising their own children that involved
horses. One spoke of a pack trip he had taken with his son
and some friends when they graduated from high school. The
other told of an experience he had taking his family camping and the 5 year old boy riding on the back of the pack
horse hanging on to the ropes.

Just yesterday I had the privilege of helping a lady who had adopted an older gelding. We
did a physical exam and floated his teeth as well as some lab
work to make sure he had the best chance of gaining some
weight back and that there were no pre-existing problems.
She had 2 little boys along with her that will both have the
blessing of growing up with horses in their lives. What an exceptional augmentation to video games and the internet. Real
experiences to help them learn so they can face real situations
in their lives. Have you ever hired a young person who has
grown up around horses?
It’s easy for most of us to get a little nostalgic about the
bygone days and horses, but what about the future? We
have some hard questions to face as citizens of this great
land. What do we do with the wild horse population? What
do we do with the unwanted horse? Another question we
must ask ourselves is; do we need more horses? I believe
we do.
Sure, it’s sad that there are horses out there that don’t
have an important purpose. There are answers to those

problems. We just have to have the courage to face them
and make some difficult decisions. But we still need good
horses. There will always be a need for the next great horse.
Whether he be a horse to haul the family into the back
country or win the Triple Crown, the bond between man
and horse is something we should support and encourage
and advocate every day of our lives. I say that because I daily witness the good things horses do for the human family.
Like people, there are good horses and bad horses. Some
of those bad people are the offenders when it comes to
abusing animals. Those mean kind of folks will always find
something to abuse, whether it’s the horse or their fellow
man or whatever. Prisons are full of them, but that’s another
discussion.
We’ve raised a few horses over the years. They become
like part of the family. Some of them are still around and
others have new homes. I’ve always been grateful that our
children have learned to work and accept responsibility. It
brings me deep happiness to talk to their employers and
hear things like, ‘We couldn’t do this without him’.
I’ve always believed in mare power. Lots of exceptional
equestrian athletes would prefer to ride a good mare than
anything else. I think I agree with them. Great mares make
the best babies too. In the last 20-30 years there have been
many exciting advances in equine reproduction. We ship
semen all over the world and have unlimited options and access to stallion power. We can also flush embryos out of our
best mares and raise more babies from them than they could
otherwise produce in a lifetime. Heck, we can still ride them
and raise foals without too much interruption with embryo
transfer. We’ve had some nice mares, but before I cash in
I hope to own one exceptional mare. May we all have the
same privilege!
