Feb. 24 Burbank Primary
Election Results
The vote totals cast for City Council candidates from all 29 precincts
for this Burbank Primary Election were:
Emily Gabel-Luddy 4,142 41.00%
Will Rogers 3,533 34.97%
Chris Rizzotti 2,356 23.32%
Juan Guillen 2,303 22.80%
David Nos 2,140 21.18%
Elise Stearns-Niesen 1,451 14.36%
Sharon Springer 1,292 12.79%
With none of these seven candidates realizing 50% plus one vote to be
elected outright in this Primary, the top four contenders will now compete for the two open seats still remaining in the April 14th General
Election.
In the School Board race Roberta Reynolds retained her seat while
Steve Ferguson garnered enough votes to be elected for the first time.
Total votes cast for all six candidates were:
Roberta Reynolds 5,327 52.73%
Steve Ferguson 5,068 50.16%
Armond Aghakhanian 3,678 36.41%
Greg Sousa 3,028 29.97%
Vahe Hovanessian 2,946 29.16%
Jess Tangkhpanya 1,873 18.54%
With two of the three seats now decided, the next two candidates with
the highest vote totals will now be contesting for the one remaining
open seat on the School Board.
City Clerk Zizette Mullins has indicated only a few remaining signatures
on ballots need to be verified by L.A. County election officials, but they are
too few to change the standings. There were 10,103 ballots submitted by
voters, up from 9,869 during the last Primary Election held in 2013.
Famed “Laugh-In” Announcer
Gary Owens Dies At Age 80
Gary Owens, a friend of our Chamber
who came up with the phrase “Beautiful
Downtown Burbank” during the years
he was on radio stations KMPC and
KFWB, passed away on February 12th at
his home in the Encino hills at the age of
80.
As the announcer of the hit ‘Laugh-In”
TV Show, Gary used his rich melodic
voice each week to start the show by
saying: “From Beautiful Downtown Burbank, it’s Rowan and Martin’s
Laugh-In”, which gave our city nationwide recognition.
The words became so popular, that in subsequent years “The Tonight
Show” starring Johnny Carson kept them alive along with other references to Burbank, including having comedian Foster Brooks appear
from time-to-time in a supposed inebriated state posing as our Burbank Mayor.
We are very pleased our Chamber now has the copyright to the
“Beautiful Downtown Burbank” phrase, and we will always be grateful to Gary for creating it.
Negotiations On New Airport
Terminal And Development
Site Heating Up
Faced with the current Development Agreement between the City of
Burbank and the Burbank Airport Authority lapsing next month on March 15,
dialogue between the parties is heating up regarding the proposed new location for a new 14 gate terminal and the 58 acre airport parcel development
opportunity site.
On Friday, February 7th, the Authority sent to the City a proposed Resolution attempting to summarize talking points so that consensus could be
achieved. The City Council responded by holding a special meeting that Sunday evening February 8th, and voted unanimously to reject the stated Resolution because it did not, in their estimation, sufficiently underscore needed city
protections.
The Sunday night City Council vote was then followed by the issuance
of an official 12 page response to the Authority’s proposed Resolution reiterating previously stated requests, including having the Airport Authority be
required to have a super majority on such governance matters as enlarging
from the 14 gate terminal and 355,000 square foot terminal footprint. This
super majority vote would necessitate 2 out of every commissioners from
each from Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena instead of the simple majority
needed currently which could have all 3 Burbank commissioners vote as a
block and still be outvoted by the other city commissioners. It is anticipated
the Airport Authority will now place the 58 acre parcel, currently held in trust,
up for sale. The approval process for the new 14 gate terminal on the former
Lockheed B-6 property will need Burbank voter approval as stipulated by
Measure B which was passed back in 2000.
Dr. Luis Calingo Resigns As
Woodbury President
On February 5th Dr. Luis Calingo
announced effective June 30 he will be
relinquishing his position as President
of Woodbury University. He will be
on sabbatical leave starting March 1
until his final date of employment. Dr.
Calingo has served in this position for
the past 3 years. Starting March 1 the
University Provost, David Dauwalder,
will be serving as the Interim President
until a permanent replacement is
found.

THE BURBANK COLLECTION IS READY FOR ITS CLOSE-UP!
The Burbank Collection is a popular mixed-use urban
residential and retail center with exciting retailers and
restaurants like Pinkberry, Panera Bread, Sketchers, Asian Box,
and Barney’s Beanery. The development is located in the heart
of Downtown Burbank, and is co-anchored by AMC 16 Theaters,
one of the top performing theaters in the nation drawing in
millions of visitors a year. The 39,400 square foot urban retail
center compliments the vibrant commercial district that
features 300 shops, 100 restaurants, Flapper’s Comedy Club,
and The Colony Theater.
The Burbank Collection was recently acquired by Goldstein
Planting Investments (GPI). GPI invested millions of dollars to
upgrade the aesthetics of the retail center to increase leasing
activity and re-purpose existing tenants. The new

SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE:
and course work in a context that
makes sense to them. Therefore,
school becomes more meaningful as students see the purpose
for the classes they are required
to take for graduation.
The benefits of service learning
extend beyond the students in
Burbank. The community is also
given the opportunity to interact
with our young people. These
opportunities create bonds and
working relationships that pay
dividends that grow over a life
time. Many of our students are
inspired by the people they volunteer to help. They become interested not only in a career, but a
major of study for college. Given

Since 1998, the Burbank
Unified School District has required service learning hours as
part of graduation requirements.
While the required hours have
changed from 20 hours to 10
hours over the years, the intent
of the requirement has remained
constant. Service learning hours
are intended to connect students
to their community in the spirit
of giving back and, in the pro-

cess, expose students to career
pathways. Students are allowed to
volunteer at any local non-profit
organization. Because the opportunities in our community are
so broad, students often find an
organization that resonates with
their personal interests resulting
in students completing well over
100 hours. For example, at John
Burroughs High School there
were 166 students who received
medallions at graduation last year
for completing more than 100
hours. The same phenomena occurs on a regular basis at Burbank
High School as well.
The nexus between the service learning experience and
career pathways cannot be underestimated. Yearly, students
compete with other schools in
L.A. County for R.O.P. recognition. Our students in Burbank not
only represented their city well
in these competitions, they often
credit their participation in R.O.P
classes to the experience they had
volunteering hours for service
learning. When students find a career that interests them, they are
able to place their school work
the recent State’s focus toward
Career Tech Pathways, the Burbank community is already ahead
of the curve for fostering these
programs for our young people.
The collaboration between the
Burbank Unified School District
and the City of Burbank is perpetuating the dream of providing
even greater opportunities for
students to explore a profession
that could sustain their livelihood
for the rest of their lives. This not
only benefits the students themselves, but the livelihood of our
City’s economy. We are proud of
our students and the relationships
they are building with our City.

hours of care were provided to our students. Furthermore, when
we have tragic community events such as accidents that claimed
the lives of several former Burbank students, FSA not only goes
to work in the schools, but in the community as well. When such
tragic events occur, crisis teams are deployed to the the school sites
to offer assistance. The work they do in every school daily and in
the community is a foundational piece of what makes the City of
Burbank special.”
• All proceeds from this event will go towards providing funds for
the Family Service Agency’s no-cost school-based Youth Counseling Program.
