When Thursday is not always Thursday
by Father Michael
This Wednesday, we leave on the parish trip out to some of our National Parks. Our
second day will be at the Grand Canyon. I have made arrangements to say Mass
there. They actually have an altar built on the rim of the canyon in a magnificent
setting. Here comes the interesting and confusing part. We are there on Thursday.
Here at Holy Cross, the Feast of the Ascension will be celebrated on that day.
However, this is something that is now pretty much limited to the Northeast. For the
rest of the country, the Feast of the Ascension has been moved to the following
Sunday. So for the Southwest, that Thursday is just an ordinary Thursday, not a holy
day. All I know is that I will be saying Mass for the group on Thursday and Sunday; I
just have to look at a map, a calendar, and a protractor and figure out when the
Ascension is celebrated. (And just so you don’t get nervous, Holy Thursday is still
celebrated everywhere on Thursday of Holy Week.) All of this is just part of the
added fun of being Catholic.
We are nearing 200 tickets sold for Man of La Mancha. I am looking forward to not
only an entertaining evening but also being inspired by the message of the show.
While there is great value in exposing children to theatre and the arts, this may not be
a particularly engaging experience for young children. Tickets are still available.
This week’s adventure at the house was my clothes dryer. The main control unit
seemed to fail. After several attempts at repairs and different theories, the great crisis
came down to being the plastic control knob was broken. Much to do about very little,
a $15 part. Timing was perfect in getting it repaired. I was running out of clean socks.
As spring kicks into full gear, we deal with all that goes along with the change of
seasons. For some, this time of year means lots of sneezing and watery eyes. For
some, it means the aches and pains of preparing the yard and garden. However, I
feel fortunate that I will not have to worry about my car turning green from all the
pollen that falls from the trees. That is one of the advantages of buying a vehicle that
looks like an over ripe olive.
Our final two First Holy Communion ceremonies take place this weekend. We
congratulate all our young children who now share fully in the Eucharist with us.
Please remember the thirty-three of us who are traveling out west. I know I am so
blessed and fortunate to be able to make trips like these. I am delighted to share
these beautiful places with others. As we will pray for you, please say a prayer for us,
whether it be on Thursday or some other day of the week.

Hearing Devices Available!
For parishioners who have difficulty
hearing, Holy Cross now has individual
devices which can amplify sound. They
are simple to use and work for those
who wear hearing aids and those who do
not. If you are interested in using these
hearing devices, please see an Usher or
the Sacristan prior to Mass.
Bakers Needed!
On May 17th, we will
have hospitality and an
Open House for the
community after the 9:30
Mass. Bakers are needed
to make baked goods for this day. The day
is designated by the Town of Smithtown as
a historic day in which they recognize the
350th Anniversary of the Town. If you are
interested in baking, please contact Nick
and Diane Lombardo at 698-5930.
Blood Drive
Our annual Blood Drive will be held on
Tuesday, July 28th. Just an early reminder
that a 56 day interval is necessary between
donations. To participate in the Holy Cross
Blood Drive this year, your last day to give
blood in other drives must be before June
2nd. More information to follow in the
weeks to come.
A NOTE FROM SCRIPTURE STUDY
May Crowning of the Blessed Mother
On Ascension Thursday (May 14th) after the 9AM Mass, all are
welcome to participate in this celebration of the May Crowning of
our Blessed Mother. The Scripture Study group will lead us to
the Blessed Mother after the 9AM Mass for the crowning and
some special prayers. Following the Crowning, there will be a
Scripture Study meeting at a different location.

TICKETS ON SALE THIS WEEKEND,
MAY 9TH/10TH
There is no set price for the tickets, but we ask that you make a
free will offering. No offering is too large or too small. This is a
fund raiser for the Parish, and there is a significant cost for the
performance, but we want every member of the Holy Cross
family who wants to attend to be able to afford to do so.
Hopefully, through your generosity the Parish will generate a
profit.
When you buy your tickets we ask that you put your offering,
either cash or check made out to Holy Cross, in an envelope and
simply indicate the number
of tickets you are
purchasing. Your offering
will be kept private.
This promises to be a great
Parish event. The
performance will be in our
Worship Center and limited
to 300 tickets, so purchase
your tickets as soon as
possible!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Welcome to Holy Cross Religious Education
The Religious Education Office is planning ahead to the 2015-2016 Formation Year.
We need your help so that we can adequately plan to meet the needs of our parish. If
you have a child entering First Grade in September you need to register. If you
have recently moved to our parish you need to register in the parish. Our program is
“home based.” Classes do not take place at the Church; rather they are held in the
homes of our Catechists. Because of this, there are geographical limits on who we
are able to accommodate. Please contact our office for more specific information.





First time registration needs to be done in person at our office.
Registration needs to be completed by June 12, 2015.
Office Hours: Monday – Friday 9:00-12:00 & 1:00-4:00
If your child was not baptized at Holy Cross you need to bring a copy of your
child’s Baptism Certificate.
For those who are already part of our program, you need to register as well
for the upcoming year. Materials have been sent to your home, and they
may be returned by mail. Please note the deadline of June 12, 2015.
A detailed outline of our program is available on-line or at our office. But, there are a
few important details to be noted.


Children must successfully complete each grade level to proceed to the next.
The Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation require a
minimum of two years of preparation.
Most importantly, we need to work together. Faithful attendance at classes and
parent workshops is essential. As comprehensive and
informative as our program is, this is only one part of your
child’s faith formation. The greatest thing you can do to
nurture your faith and the faith of your child is to regularly be
part of our Sunday Eucharist.
The Catechism of the Church states that parents have the first
responsibility for the education of their children. We are
privileged to work with you in this task. We thank you for your
cooperation in allowing us to be part of your lives. We look
forward to a fruitful year where everyone, young and old,
continues to grow in understanding the gift of our faith.

MORE FROM RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
The Office of Religious Education sends a BIG Thank You to all the Level 2 students who
received their First Holy Communion on the first two Saturdays of May. So many
parishioners were involved in helping to make this a memorable, happy day for the children
and their parents. We thank most sincerely, the Catechists who welcomed the children in
their homes over 24 weeks and taught them about Reconciliation and Eucharist. A sincere
thank you to the Liturgy Committee who took care of the beautiful flowers and other
decorations in the church. Thank you to Deacon Ralph, the Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors and
Altar Servers who gave up their Saturday and participated in our beautiful liturgy. Thank you
to Fr. Michael who celebrated all our First Communion Masses and put the children and their
parents at ease.
We are already planning for the fall. Please send in your re-registration for your child/
children for next year by June 12, 2015.
